They foster a learning environment and are quick to say "take care of your training partner, we all have to go to work tomorrow." I'm over 50 and I Havent experienced anything that settles your mind better than BJJ. A trusted friend who was going to this gym got me started and his reasoning was that "these are the kind of people that we like to be around." ppl that don't take themselves too serious, work hard, have a good time and no ego. He was correct and I am fortunate to have started at Chitwood. This is the only BJJ gym I've been around, but it's easy to see how the wrong atmosphere could be very intimidating and turn someone off to Bjj altogether. So, If you're thinking about BJJ, I recommend starting with Chitwood. For myself, after a couple months it was obvious that if i didnt enjoy going to class, it will most likely because BJJ isn't for me and not because of the atmosphere or ppl there.

However, that changed when I went to Powell Fitness and started training with Anthony Castore. It's not a sweaty, smelly, crowded gym with scantily clad women and perfectly coifed muscle head men who grunt. It's a very nice atmosphere with trainers and clients that are all very nice and friendly. It's clean and comfy. Anthony is the best. He is a bodybuilder but actually has a personality, a sense of humor, and he's kind. Kind is a major factor. He really wants you to get stronger and more confident. He's very knowledgable and the complete opposite of conceded and arrogant. He will sit down with you and actually WRITE stuff down about you on a piece of paper and uses a pen.Yeah, marinate on that for a minute. I live in Westerville and it's worth the drive to go to Powell Fitness. Especially if you're going to train with Anthony.
