And it may be something you need for someone you love. Years ago, I went to my best friend's mom's viewing & funeral at Healey Chapel. I remember thinking how nice it was without being stuffy or over the top. A couple of years later, her dad's services were just as nice. When my brother died several years ago, we had his services here. Because I was in Austin, I missed out on the heavy duty planning stuff that my mom & sister handled. It was a blur. Do I remember much? Nope. Do I remember it was nice & my brother would have liked it? Yes. What I should have remembered I didn't recall until a visit to Healey this morning. A very sweet memory. My sister & I met with funeral director Matt Darling today to discuss pre-planning our mom's services. Not really a fun thing to do on vacation. But it's something that has to be done because mom can't plan for herself anymore. Matt brought up some details from my brother's services and then it clicked. My brother was a sports fan. That's a huge understatement. He was buried in his beloved Chicago Bears sweatshirt holding his ratty worn out White Sox ball cap. So what Matt triggered in my memory bank and made me tear up this morning was his leading a chorus of "take me out to the ballgame" at the end of my brother's service. Sounds kinda weird, but it was really perfect and it brought some levity to a very difficult time. Everyone in attendance sang along & thought it was the perfect send off, too. Back to today's visit. Matt was so professional without being stuffy. He is great at what he does - helping people during their most difficult times. We were able to get answers to all of our questions, pick out things we want for mom & left knowing what other things we need to do with the cemetery and others. I know when the time comes, mom's services will be exactly what she expressed in the past & we won't have to deal with these details when we're grieving.

With that said, the hair and makeup on my grandma were horrible. I did not know that she didn't want to use this funeral home until after her services. Apparently she had told my family that they don't make the bodies look good, and she was right! There was an inch gap between her makeup and hairline where pale skin showed. It could be seen from the back of the room, that white outline that almost glowed. When closer, I could see where the makeup completely missed part of her nose, her hands were blotchy, face streaked. It looked like an airbrush was used improperly, it was even in her eyebrows and eyelashes. We could even see where her neck had been stitched up from embalming her. I would think that the outfit she were to wear would be considered when deciding where to perform the embalming. I'm not familiar enough with the process to know, so this may have been unavoidable. I've been to many funerals and wakes, I do not expect the body to look like the person it once was. I do expect better than this though.

Next proceeded a flurry of texts and phone calls preparing us for when Mom passed. You both put our minds at ease. His voice was calming. Even the way Brad stood when talking to us with his hands folded and the way he spoke was so peaceful, calming, soothing. He took such meticulous care preparing my Mom for transport. My brother-in-law was extremely impressed with everything Brad did and said. The lovely rose on top of Mom was a wonderful touch. Megan was amazing with all the arrangements. She answered all our questions. She gave us suggestions for Mom like asking if she had a favorite perfume she liked to wear and made sure we didn't forget to bring her glasses. My family requested our friends and family to wear Chicago Bears attire to the wake in honor of my Mom, the diehard Bears fan. Brad and Megan went out and bought Bears jerseys for themselves to wear, which I think was just amazing. We picked out a navy blue metal casket and Brad and Megan bought Bears magnets to put on the casket, which was a genius idea!!! That was so incredibly thoughtful, along with painting my Mom's nails in blue and orange. Ironically, the girls in the family went and got our nails done in blue and orange and we just about flipped out with excitement when we saw Mom's nails done. I would never ever have thought of that!!! Mom looked absolutely lovely!! I can't thank Brad and Megan enough for that!!! They even bought Mom a Bears blanket and had it on display and then asked my sister and myself to tuck Mom in at the end so that Mom was comfortable. Again, the love for my Mom just shined through in everything Brad and Megan did for us!!!!! I kept forgetting things and Megan was there to help remember and help us along the way and I will never forget that. I seriously can't thank Brad and Megan for all that they did. We have gotten so many compliments on Mom's services and how beautifully everything was done and it is all thanks to New Traditions!!
