This was an alternate option since the Everest was closed. My son and I were craving Indian food and so here we were. We were seated immediately and didn't need to look at the menu too long before we ordered. We decided on pani puri and veggie samosas for apps and tikka masala and butter chicken, rice and garlic naan. I ordered a vegan mango lassi and him a regular mango lassi. The pani puri was ok. I like the crispy, but I wasn't too fond of the filling to be chilled. It also had a slight sweetness to it and it wasn't my favorite. I've had it before, but I don't remember it being chilled on the inside, but what I do like about it what is that? It has a crispy shell when you bite into it. The veggie samosas were my favorites. The butter chicken was kind of bland as well as the tikka masala. It did not stop me from finishing my garlic naan with our dishes but I found myself wishing it was more flavorful. My vegan mango lassi had a taste that I wasn't too fond of and didn't finish it. At the end of the meal, it was more than $100 and that was sticker shock for me. The takeout can be wildly varied in quality. For example, today I got a Dahl soup that was basically a tomato soup. Tomatoes aren't even listed as an ingredient on the menu. Checked out the Delhi Diner during the Solano St fest because of the nice outside appearance and the reviews on Yelp. When we entered, I was in awe of the restaurant space. The spacious and open ambience, along with the decor, established the vibe of the cuisine. The servers were welcoming and provided all the necessary plates and utensils for my little children, and there were at least 3-4 different staff members who checked in to make sure we were taken care of. It was an extensive menu with some interesting offerings. The special fried fish appetizer was a highlight and one I would love to try again. In addition, all of the stews/curries were top notch flavor and enjoyable with the rice. Regrettably, the tandori chicken was fairly dry (almost like the pre-cook was beyond what would stand well with the sizzling plate) and the serving size didn't justify the price. Also, the grilled tiger prawns made me question if we actually were receiving tiger prawns - they were quite small and definitely did not justify the price of the entree. Between the staff, the restaurant vibes, and most of the stew/appetizer offerings, this is a very good place that I wouldn't mind suggesting to someone looking for a nice casual place to enjoy Indian. However, there are definitely some spots (all grilled plates) that would encourage me to try other places instead. read more

Refused to take a gift card purchased from their website. My parents purchased a 100 dollar gift card as a gift so I could enjoy a meal around my birthday. I would not have returned if I had not been for the gift card. I've been 5 times and the last 3 visits have been underwhelming food wise. Today they refused the gift card and said I needed to come another time when the owner was there. I will not go back. Too many other good spots that serve Indian food to get messed around like this. I was in the Berkeley area after class and absolutely starving. I've been wanting to try Indian food for a while because I've heard so many good things about the flavors and cuisine. I found Delhi Diner on Yelp and decided to give it a try -- and I'm so glad I did! The owner was incredibly friendly and helpful, especially since it was my first time trying Indian food. He took the time to explain the menu and helped me choose a few items. I ended up ordering Chicken Tikka Masala, naan, basmati rice, and a Mango Lassi to go. Even after my 30-minute drive back to Hayward, the food was still hot and smelled amazing. The Chicken Tikka Masala was rich and flavorful -- the chicken was perfectly tender, and that sauce... honestly, I could just eat it with naan alone. The Mango Lassi was unlike any drink I've ever had -- creamy, refreshing, and perfectly sweet with real mango flavor. I'm so happy I stepped out of my comfort zone and tried Indian food for the first time here. I paid around $36 for everything, and it was enough for two to three sittings. Delhi Diner has definitely made me a fan and now I know why they are rated some of the best food in the East Bay-- I'll be back soon to try more from their menu! I'm hooked! read more

One line review: This was average -- surprising, given the reviews. We really wanted to like this place. And there were things to enjoy. The physical space is attractive (though a bit cool on the March night of our visit), the service attentive. But the food was only okay. We had goat curry (not enough salt, not especially flavorful), chicken tikka masala (spicy, the way we ordered it; best thing on the table), garlic naan (didn't taste of garlic), lachcha paratha (fine), and veggie samosas (tasty but small). We also had a chai (smallish) and a nimbu paani (this was kind of salty -- like a gatorade -- not my favorite). On the whole, the food was adequate but not special -- disappointing given the huge number of glowing reviews. The service was friendly and attentive, though our waitress had limited English and had a hard time answering some of our questions. A man (owner? manager?) came out to greet us before we left and was super friendly. But even though the restaurant calls itself a 'tip-free zone,' they charge a non-optional 18% service charge. I didn't care for that. I'd rather make that determination for myself. Parking was free on Solano and in the nearby neighborhood. Bottom line: Given the high reviews, I wonder if we just ordered the wrong items on this first visit. But it is unlikely that we'll return, as we've already had better Indian food in the same area and I really dislike the compulsory service charge. read more

We are back. Once again ... the tables were clean and well set, superior quality original foods, fresh ingredients, and gracious staff. The place was busy so I think reservations would be a good idea but walk-ins during non-peak times are fine. There was 3 of us dining. Talasi was our amazing server. And he speaks fluently in English and Japanese as well as his native Indian dialect. It was fun to share speaking in different tongues. Also a very nice young lady helped. We ordered 3 styles of different proteins Tofu, Shrimp, and chicken.. You may request Halal, vegan, or regular proteins. First thing. I entered the beautifully designed empty building just before lunch ended. The gentleman behind the counter was extremely kind and helpful. He gave me some suggestions, explained what a few other things on the menu were, gave me the best tips on heating the food up. I was buying dinner and it was lunch time. I waited in my car for my food to be ready. When I went back in, he said he came outside looking for me to give me my food. He then gave me a complimentary drink. Based on the many other reviews and high star rating, I was expecting the food at Delhi Diner to be amazing. For me though, the entrees lacked good flavor, were not executed well, and pale in comparison to other Indian restaurants around the Bay. Glad I checked it off my list but there are so many better options out there, so I won't be retuning. Ambiance 3/5 - Nicely decorated restaurant but the person clearing tables into a large bucket and making a clamor in the dining room was very distracting. I suggest removing the plates from the tables and taking them to the back like most restaurants do. Also, the light in the men's restroom didn't work and had some weird cover over it. Wasn't sure what was going on there and there was no signage to indicate Out of Service. Staff 4/5 - The owner genuinely seemed nice and checked on diners. Everyone we interacted with were nice and accommodating. Food 2.5/5 - The complimentary chutney and picked onions with the Pappadum were too salty, the Chicken Tikka Masala did not have the common depth of flavors from tomato, coriander, chilis, garam masala, cumin, turmeric, etc. Theirs was a cashew based sauce and tasted overwhelmingly like cashew. Hard pass. The Saag Paneer was completely flavorless and the paneer had a rubbery texture. The Lamb Vindaloo was the best of the 3 entrees we tried but I would have preferred smaller pieces of potato. read more

My husband and I tried this after a long day of meetings when I wanted some comfort food a.k.a. Dosas. The atmosphere was nice. There were some tables put together for a large group and it was nice to see so many people enjoying a meal together. I really love that the dosas are listed as gluten free, since you never really know if they add other stuff unless they write it out. They are served on a lovely green leaf shaped plate, cut in half. For some reason I really love a dosa arriving in its full and luxurious form extending beyond what any plate can hold. It's part of the experience for me. The flavor of the masala dosa was wonderful. I was less impressed with the chicken. Also, there was a weird small piece of some inorganic object in there, which was easy to get out and didn't affect the flavor. Still puts a bit of a damper on a meal. The staff were very attentive and the food came very quickly. All in all a good experience. read more

I don't go to restaurants with the sole intentions of using the restroom, but, like other customers, one does use the restroom, occasionally. I think there are handrails, but my memory of my last visit, is that the toilet doesn't meet the height requirements of people with disabilities. I won't go back until this is remedied. read more

We were greeted and were able to choose from array of tables since they were not busy on this Memorial Day evening. We ordered the veggie pakoras and the samosas. The pakoras were surprisingly chewy and not in a good way. The Samosas however were outstanding and a bit different in that it was the filling that stood out instead of like a lot of other places where the fried dough is thick and prominent. Very good as was the naan. The chicken tikka masala was average in flavor But Every other dish that we ordered fell completely flat. The aloo gobi, the potato gobi and even the Tandoori chicken was lacking flavor. It left us wondering if this why the place was so empty. Lamb Kabob: this was the star for me. Great flavor, well cooked, temperature sizzling, good portions. Khorba (I believe) it's the eggplant: Very good dish. We ordered medium. This dish had more heat than medium, at the higher end for sure. But solid. Better than I expected. I thought it would be more oily, but it wasn't. Prices are not cheap. But it's Solano. The most disappointing: No Chai tea on the house. This is strictly business. You're not part of the family while you're there. We stopped by as we were out with in laws who wanted to eat desi food. The restaurant ambiance is quite similar to most other Indian restaurants. Owner seemed to take pride in what he serves but we had a mixed feeling. The order- Dahi papdi chaat - pretty good Fish kabob- not great. Ok - 2.5/5 Veg spring roll - 3.5/5 Lamb keema samosa - 4/5 needs better accompaniment Veg biryani - was made very spicy may be due to overload of masalas and not just red chili. 1/5 Fish curry - 3/5 Plain rice - 5/5 Lemonade was pretty good though it was two weeks old!!!
