I love wineries like this - casual, more "ramshackle" (and that is not a criticism) vs. the slick corporate places you find in Northern VA as well as many wineries around Charlottesville. I only tried the Riesling and it was unlike any Riesling I ever had - notes of peaches and apricot (and totally dry). Unfortunately they do not offer counter tastings where you can interact with the staff--only flights, which is a residual winery issue from the pandemic. Also it's likely the only staff the winery has are the family members. I would have liked to hear more about the winery but the lady working (possibly the owner) seemed very preoccupied. But all in all this winery is a throwback to the earlier days of Virginia wineries - the days of Wintergreen, Farfelu, Unicorn (all three sadly closed) and the remaining VA wine pioneers like Sharp Rock, Willowcroft, and Burnley. read more

Third hill winery is the definition of charming. It smells like a pine box as soon as you walk in the door, and resonates country-chic. All of the wine was good, and the owner was so sweet. My group enjoyed chatting with her and learning about how the winery was built. The tasting was reasonably priced and there's lots of outdoor seating around to enjoy a bottle with friends. Absolutely the worst wines I've ever tasted at a Virginia winery. The lady who served us said, "Our wines are very dry," and she wasn't kidding! Every single one of the 8 wines we tried was EXTREMELY, mouth-puckeringly dry. I could only finish one of the samplings in my flight, and it was painful. The rest were simply TERRIBLE. Hoping the other vineyards in the area are better. We are here for a 4-day holiday and this was the first winery we tried. Ugh! Stay AWAY. read more

Nice new place in the Shenandoah Valley! Most new wineries need time to feel their way, but DeMello is starting strong. Right now they are sourcing grapes locally, but they do have 6 acres planted. They'd have more, but recent winters set them back quite a bit. The first thing you notice is how gorgeous the tasting room is. Apparently being a wine maker isn't enough; Mr. DeMello is also the architect. Great views of the valley from the patio, both upstairs and downstairs. Now officially one of my favorite tasting rooms in the valley. I came in concurrent to a crowd so I didn't get much 1-on-1 time with the owners; but I definitely tried the wine. 2014 Traminette: I'm a fan of this grape. I liked the boldness, although I prefer my wines dry. 2015 Chardonnel: Another winter-hardy hybrid grape. Fermented mostly in steel with some oak; I thought it was OK. 2014 Viognier: Honeysuckle notes; I'm not a big Viognier fan but this was OK 2012 Chambourcin: Fruity, made in more of a dry style 2012 Cab Franc: Now we're talking! More spicy than bell pepper. Dfferent take on the grape, but I liked it. 2012 Triage (Red blend mostly of Cab Franc and a bit of Syrah): Liked it, but definitely on the lighter side 2012 Cab Sauvignon: Smooth, nice dark fruit. 2012 Petit Verdot: Not quite as intense as other PVs, but still good. read more

Cannot say enough great things about our experience here - the grounds are beautiful and the owners were fantastic. Unfortunately, the hours posted to google were wrong so we showed up fifteen minutes before closing. They happily poured us a glass each (need 20+ minutes for a full tasting) and allowed us to explore the beautiful ambience and grounds. They also gave great recommendations for other restaurants and accommodations in the area. We will absolutely return for a longer stay. Word of advice - Check the website/facebook or call ahead for accurate hours of operation, as google definitely led us wrong! read more

Fabulous place, and if you love big bold reds, you will love them, if you are looking for sweet wines, don't bother.

This place was amazing! They had the best Gluhwein I've tasted this season (hot red wine steeped with honey and cinnamon and cloves). This winery is basically a big house with a super rustic feel throughout. Extremely cute decor and comfy places to sit. The Christmas tree is so big it goes from the bottom to the top floor and you can still see it where you sit upstairs. $23 for their most affordable bottle of red, it was smooth with a unique taste. I would definitely buy another bottle. Where we sat upstairs we were graced with the wonderful voice and acoustic guitar of musician Jason Masi. He filled the room with emotion and good vibes. I will definitely be back! read more

Lovely interior and lovely owners. We imagine it's great in all seasons, but we were lucky enough to be here for the first snow of the season. Decorated for Christmas and gorgeous. Cheese plate and chocolates were nice accompaniments. Saw some folks bring picnic baskets. That'll be next time. :) read more

I've been to about 20 or so vineyards in the Virginia area around Rt 29, I-81 corridor and I honestly think DeMello might be my favorite one so far. As a disclaimer, I'm not a wine connoisseur by any means but I thought every single one I sampled was absolutely delicious. The whites tend to be a bit on the dryer side, which is my preference. It didn't have that tart aftertaste that some whites have and just had a clean finish. The reds were really rich and I loved the Cab Franc with the black pepper spiciness. The wooden cabin building is gorgeous and the owners (couple from California that clearly knew what they were doing) were very friendly. The day we visited was pretty hot but the exterior view is stunning as well and there's plenty of patio/balcony room with cornhole and plenty of room if you have kids/pets. It wasn't very busy being the Monday from Memorial Day weekend but I feel like the wineries along I-81 aren't as dense as the ones on Rt-29 around Charlottesville but this is seriously worth driving the extra distance to reach if you're hopping from winery to winery. Just be careful and don't end up buying more bottles than you should like I did. read more

Beautiful tasting room. The decor is all locally sourced and tells the story of the area. The owners are very friendly and will tell you all about their wines as well as other wineries or things to do in the area. As a travel PT I was very thankful for the suggestions and conversation. Their wine is very well made, I enjoyed the traminette and rose the best. They have some good reds and their wines are on the dryer side if you don't enjoy sweet wines this place should be on your list! Also they have a wine and cigar pairing which I have not done but sounds amazing. read more

I have been a yelp user for several years, and have never felt compelled to write a poor review until today. Although my fiancé urged me to only give one star, I am choosing to give two based off the adequate wine we were served. My fiancé and I visited this winery on a Saturday. We were very patient waiting for a spot at the bar to open given that it was busier day. The wine was perfectly average, however we were very disappointed with the customer service. The woman pouring our tasting was continuously leaving the 7+ people she was serving to chat with and and ring up other customers who came to the bar after us. Again, we remained patient during this considering it was a busier day. However, after she poured the final wine of the tasting she walked away not to return. We stayed at the bar to re-taste a wine that we were considering purchasing on top of another bottle. The male owner came up to us and ushered us to the check out line. We explained to him that we still wished to taste one of the wines left on the list. Sounding very disgruntled, he poured one tasting of the wine. My fiancé asked to also taste the wine, to which he replied "well you can just share". Being someone who frequently visits wineries and has never been told I needed to share, I felt that this response was in poor taste. I couldn't help but feel as though the owner dismissed my fiancé and I due to the fact that we were younger in age. I normally like to invest in the Virginia wine industry, and purchase multiple bottles at each winery I visit. However, between being ignored by the woman doing our tasting for close to 15 minutes and having a poor interaction with the owner himself, I did not feel inclined to invest in this winery. I will choose to spend my money elsewhere where I am respected more as a customer. read more

I came to Third Hill with a group of 12 friends, and we had an amazing time to kick off our day of winery visits. The interior of their winery is delightful (instagram-worthy at every turn!) and the couple who owns the place was kind, funny and sweet as our group basically took over the bar for a tasting. They were kind of enough to comp my tasting as the birthday gal, and even gave me a Shenandoah T-shirt :) The wine tasting was a bargain $7 (I think for 6 or 7 tastings?) and we loved their whites especially. Excellent wines. The outside had plenty of tables for us to eat lunch and hang out, and they had live music as well which made the experience all the more enjoyable. Can't say enough about how much we loved this place, and can't wait to go back! read more

Our favorite winery in the region! We came in on a Sunday night for a tasting. The owner was friendly and knowledgeable. Our favorites were the Vidal Blanc and the Bordeaux-style wine. The tasting room is cozy with a beautiful Christmas tree and warm fireplace. Lots of locals seem to come here. read more

We were turned away 15 minutes before closing. If tastings stop 20 minutes before closing, they should have that posted on their website where the hours are listed (not only on their door). We would have been quick, but obviously they don't need our business. read more

We didn't actually taste any wines and the reason for the low stars is we looked on line and saw they open up at 12 pm ~ we arrived about 15 mins early so we walked the grounds a bit and was at our truck giving our two dogs some water. A car pulled up and pulled up beside us ~ we thought other wine goers, but we were greeted with a not so nice and welcoming smile. The owner ~ man ~ was not friendly at all and made us feel like we were trespassing ~ the gate was open and another car was there. He proceeded to tell us we do t open till 1 pm ~ we apologized and told him his site said otherwise. I would think if you actually had customers at your place you would greet with a smile and nicely say we open in an hour and please come back. Extremely disappointing- however we went to Winery at Kindred Pointe and boy what a nice visit. Amazing wines and really nice ppl and they open at noon. read more
