For whatever reason I find myself drinking a lot of vodka sodas in this town and this place was practically serving them up on tap for the low price of two dollars and fifty scents. No that's not a typo so ya. you know how it goes at bar karaoke. I do have a job so my behavior in this place was pretty insane given it was a regular Tuesday night. Alarm set an all. Whatever though I don't regret it you know sometimes you find yourself at a joint like this and you just %]%{€£\€\% close it down with all your new besties and maybe your enemies too. Went out for my friends birthday last night and the bartender called my friend a motherf*ucker, slammed the tray down when we ordered so loud everyone turned and looked, and then refused to give us his name and literally told us to f*uck off. it was actually astounding as we weren't being rude or loud and were tipping 20% so we were definitely confused. later overheard a lady at the bar calling pointing at us and calling us homophobic slurs and the bartender was agreeing with her. It was a male bartender with black framed glasses and a blacked out tattoo sleeve on his arm with spiderwebs on his knuckles. deeply disappointed and made the place feel unsafe, would avoid for any LGBTQ people. read more

Cool rustic vibe with lots of funny decor. Service was spot! Waitress I had a Moscow mule for $5.75. Unreal prices but they are mostly known for their craft beers. My friend and I shared 2 plates. Both meals came with jambalaya with a medium heat. Rice, red beans, and sausage. First meal was Chislic which is fried sirloin with regular cole slaw. Chislic is local traditional bar food. Seasoned well but would be better served with a horseradish sauce not ranch. The second meal was weinersnitchel and spalzel with red cabbage. I highly recommend both dishes! read more

Very nice spot hidden in the downtowns of Fargo. Now they got Harp beer my new favorite beer. The pizza is badass! And the bartenders are nice and hospitable and not just with the locals but also with the out-of-towners like myself. Give this place a chance, a Monday night was lively. And I was told that as the week progresses, it just get better and better. read more

My favorite bar in Fargo Moorhead. A great mix of people from college age to the downtown regulars. Check out Poitin, Irish band, many a Friday night. If dark, noisy with a great variety of people is your cup of tea, definately the place to go! read more

It feels odd to rate a bar "5 star" but we really enjoyed ourselves at Dempsey's. There are no actual gay bars in Fargo (GASP!) but we were told that Dempsey's was just a nice and friendly place to go. That advice was spot-on - from the moment we walked in the door to when we walked out, the staff were fantastic and the crowd was just there to have fun. We drank, we ate popcorn, we drank some more, we ate peanuts, we drank, we played Trivia, and finally we drank again. Good drinks and reasonably priced and just a fun place to spend a couple of hours. We were there in time for the last hour of Happy Hour on a Thursday - not crowded at all - full, but not wall to wall. I suspect it gets crazier on weekends. Definitely going back! read more

Came here March-April, 2010. I would describe it as an Irish Pub, right? Okay moving on....I liked this place. Now, if you're a regular guy (even though that doesn't mean what it used to mean anymore) I think you would find this place more than acceptable to have a drink. Came in here after work one day (business trip) took a seat at the bar...bartender said, "where you from?" (yes, I sort of stand out in a town like Fargo)....I chuckled and said L.A. Ordered a Dewer's on the Rocks and beer back....holy crap was he generous with the scotch...hadn't eaten dinner yet, so after my Dewer's and half a beer, I had to go outside for a smoke to calm down!! (grease my buzz) No you can't smoke in here anymore...maybe once, but not when I was there. They serve food, never tried it, but it looked good. The locals seemed to always be munching there. The staff doesn't mind hollering at each other, and they were all very down to earth. Waitresses were fairly cute too. Men's room was actually pretty clean.I went here a couple of times before I found out about upstairs. So what do I see online at work one day? Brother Ali (Hip hop artist) coming thru in a couple of days? woo hoo...the place that sold the tickets was almost closing when I got there, sure enough got one, and asked where the show was?? "It's at the Aquarium", where the hell is that ?? (the second floor of Dempsey's). "No waaaaayy". It was right uhh above my nose. This place was cramped with about 200-250 people inside. People getting sweaty, bumping into to each other, beer cans all over the floor. God, I loved it. Mainly because the show was great, but yes this is an ideal place for an intimate show. Cops showed up THE VERY MINUTE the show ended, possibly at the request of owners to make sure no raucous ensued. And I'm done... Give em hell Fargo !! read more

This is a review of the Aquarium (upstairs). I had a lot of fun when I came here once. I came here for hip-hop show with Ernie Rhodes, and SF wrecks and Wide Eyes, about 2 years ago. The place was nice and spacious, with pretty decent stage. I love the people from Fargo, tons of douchy college kids, acting like fools to live music. Honestly, I don't think I've ever had that much fun watching people in my life! Not saying people of Fargo suck or anything, but man...what a pleasant experience! The drinks are relatively cheap here, and strong! The bar was busy the whole night I was there, but the bartenders managed to keep up really well! Good job buddies! I want to come back sometime soon, I've heard Demseys has some good food. I'd like to try it myself! read more

This place is a fun bar to go to. Live music and and a nice dance floor. It's got a nice feel to it, with much more character than other downtown Fargo bars. However, there is a drawback. They are NOT LGBTQ+ friendly. Apparently you can get kicked out of the bar in the middle of January (while temps are below -20) for going into the bathroom that you feel more comfortable in. It's just sick if you ask me. Fargo needs to get with it and I would like to see businesses like Dempsey's making the move forward to become a more inclusive and accepting environment. read more

Fun and chill place to drink with a group of friends and listen to live music. Great for a casual weekend night out or for a weekday evening. On Thursdays, they do open mic night, which is always entertaining to listen to. Check out their website/Facebook to see which bands are performing and make sure to check out the second floor space for more live music, which is called the Aquarium (as a note, there is usually a cover for bands that perform upstairs). read more

Best thing: cheap/free food during the week (Wednesdays and Thursdays, I believe.) Worst thing: very crowded; like being a sardine in a can. Whenever I have been here it's usually packed, busy and uncomfortable. There are no daily drink specials, which is unfortunate. There's dollar tacos nights and free hotdog nights, giving it 3 stars instead of 2. Not my kind of bar, unfortunately. Bathroom has two stalls (I like the 1 person ones) and most times I've had to use it there are 4 women packed into the tiny bathroom waiting for their 1 friend to go. I would probably give this bar 4 stars if it wasn't so packed all the time. The decor is nice and the staff is pleasant. Wouldn't recommend if you're like me and like to relax and just hang out instead of being in a loud "party" atmosphere. read more

Dempsey's is definitely cool. If I'm going out downtown, you can count on me stopping in for at least a drink or two. The pub always is busy, kind of a hot-spot in downtown. The venue upstairs, the Aquarium, has some good live music once and a while. I've always had a good time up there, from what I can remember... I like the crowd that comes here. It's not so much of the Fargo norm, Abercrombie/Hollister d-bags, but a good mix of alternative kids, hipsters, and college kids. One of the few places in Fargo that I don't get looked at strangely when I wear skinny jeans or more edgy clothes. The bathrooms are actually really nice here! I was surprised at how nice they were. Well constructed with nice tile, good fixtures, etc. Random, I know, but I'm kind of a bathroom critic. Great place, just wish there were others like it. My friends always want to go there and I get tired of it after three days in a row! Only down side is that sometimes when they're busy it might take a couple minutes to get a drink. To be expected though when they have live music I guess. Two thumbs up. read more

Although it can be a little dark and busy, this place is really good. They have good cocktails and a variety of beer. Their food isn't too bad either. They often have live music, especially on the weekends. It's a great place to start your night downtown. PS they have free hotdogs on Thursdays, and not just bland, they have toppings. read more

pretty okay bar, but the popcorn is way too salty. like take the saltiest thing you've ever eaten, and then multiply that by ten. it honestly hurts to eat but i can't stop. i'm trapped by this stupid popcorn. it hurts but something about it keeps bringing me back. use like 1/8 the amount of salt on the popcorn and you got a pretty decent bar. read more

Dempsey's is my go to Fargo bar. As a punk ass musician from Seattle this is my comfort space downtown Fargo. Nobody judges you and everyone is cool. Also was there on a weekend night and saw a great band from MPLS. It's hard to concentrate right now cuz I'm watching a baseball game and some little kid is screaming insults at the batters. All very audible. Pretty impressed by his knowledge of cuss words. read more

Divey atmosphere, cheap drinks poured with a very loose wrist, interesting mix of people, friendly staff, crowded but people aren't douchey or rude & they respect your space. Pretty sweet Irish Bar. I can only imagine what St Paddy's day is like. When we went there was a great band playing so the ambiance was great. They served up some good Guinness and Black and Tans and they have a Black Jack table. I noticed some seedy placed while at Fargo and this was definitely not one of them if that's what you're looking for. If I ever make it back to Fargo I would go back to Dempsey's. read more

Dempsey's is the best bar in Fargo and they get the best music. Staff is A+, sliders are great and the bingo host is hilarious.

Incredibly cool local hangout spot with cheap cheap drinks and incredible bartenders. The crowd was mixed and the environment felt welcoming for an out-of-towner. Well, on the positive side, the staff is good and well capable, as Jessica has pointed out.. In fact I must give them props for dealing with the crowds that come out here all the time. That's the big problem with the place; it is always crowded, often to the point where you and your party can't find a spot to sit, and even then, it's too loud to even converse (yep, I'm one of those types of bar-goers!). Combine with an extremely smoky atmosphere, and I conclude that Dempsey's is overrated. read more

We always enjoyed drinking here. It is a fun Irish bar. Truly just a bar... not super clean... but a nice bar. Always enjoyed hanging out here and playing blackjack, too. DO NOT ORDER WINE... I know this could be a given but I was with someone who did and they poured two bottles of wine together.. and they were great wines.... GROSS! But other than that... come here :) read more
