    Shoppers & NoFrills side-by-side
    Laura T.

Grabbed a few things while in the area, but the main reason going inside this grocery story was to pick up some meat for my meals this week. NoFrills in AB is known for lower prices for groceries but I didn't get that feeling here (but I only walked a small portion of the store). There was a large choice of veggies & fruit (included pre-cut items / trays). Price wise though, you might want to walk over to the other option in the parking lot if a small amount of whole veggies & fruit is all you're stopping for. Seemed to have a decent range in price for packaging sizes for bakery & frozen fish. I ended up grabbing a frozen fish package as what I wanted to grab for meat was gone (hoping to pick up a small package of ground beef). The other non-frozen options (pork & chicken) didn't look the greatest for the package & price but I'm very lucky what my meat should look like if I'm paying that much for it. I didn't go further in the store as I physically didn't have it in me to wonder more so I can't fully judge the average pricing or quality of choices but the store seemed large & decently busy in the store & at tills. Staff seemed friendly & things moved quickly at the tills. Large parking out front of store but shaped oddly for flow & positioning of handicap stalls. If you're mobility limited, cross closer to Shoppers so you're more visible & have a larger dropped sidewalk area to navigate. The store has double security bars as you enter (like what you would see at Canadian tire) which I really dislike with my chronic pain & mobility issues. If you're pushing a cart I'm sure you notice it less. Overall, it's a grocery store, seemed to have a decent selection for fruits & veggies & from the looks of it serves the community decently with the amount of people that were in there that night

Around my work there are a few options to grocery shop. This is definately one of those options, where you have a clean store, and cheap prices. I thought that No Frills was only back east, and was amazed that this one was nice and hidden. It is, what it is, a Loblaws/Superstore, with lower prices, and also the same selection. The nice thing about this location is that it is in a plaza, and unlike Superstore... you can at least walk around and do other things, then just going directly to your car! You'll save acouple bucks here, I'm sure of it!

The prices are not so thrifty though, groceries can be expensive here. Anyways I came here today because I wanted to buy some supplements as I'm a bit of a health nut so I was in the vitamin/supplement section plus I wanted to use my gift card for something as this woman who I guess was working in the vitamin/supplement section approached me saying "Can I help you with anything or are you just looking?" I just felt awkward because her tone of voice was not friendly and when I replied "No, thank you, I'm okay, with a smile" she didn't smile back, just had a grumpy, bitter look on her face. I kind of felt more like she was suspicious I was going to steal something and I was being racially profiled rather than someone genuinely wanting to assist me. They do product samples too, not as many as in Costco though. I got to try samosas which are sold at the cooked station. There are cooked food sections after the cashier area, a bit similar to what you see at H-Mart or even the save on in coquitlam by Sunwood Square. Realizing I have been coming here more regularly, and I am no longer as discontent as before, an update maybe warranted. They have become more competitive in offering deals and discounts. On average, they are beginning to be on par in pricing with other grocery chains around town for specials. Often there are better deals here. What could make this place even better? Better customer service. More healthier alternatives. (It is growing but 2 aisles is tokenism.). More cooked/prepared meals. Their rotisserie chicken can be gamey if left in the heating area for too long. They could time stamp it and discount it after 2 hours. But nooooo. If it is not piping hot...avoid.

And having some dinner plans in mind for the rest of this week, it was 'yea', when I found some very decent looking and priced green onions and Roma tomatoes. The staff is helpful and if you ask repeatedly for an item they'll often get it in. Prices are very competitive. If you are on a tight budget look in the bargain shelf at the back. I got a bag of tomatoes that were very ripe at a real discount. They are close to deserving 5 stars. Perhaps organic citrus and/or tomatoes would do it for me.

It's been a very long time since I last stepped foot in this place so maybe it's just my faulty memory, but it really did seem like they had expanded their offerings at this place. The fried foods were what really stood out for me. I don't recall this being here at all. It took a lot of restraint for me to not buy anything from here. Deep fried squid, deep fried vegetables, deep fried seaweed roll, tornado potato...etc. They all looked so tempting. I grabbed a couple boxes of Kimbap (One Burdock Kimbap and a Fried Gourd Kimbap) plus a Rice drink that was on sale for $1.99. They also had some Triangular Maki (Onigiri) for sale. No Vegetarian flavors. Tuna was the only flavor I could have eaten since I'm Pescatarian. I decided to stick with the Vegetarian Kimbaps though. Upon first glance, I thought the rice drink was made just from rice milk and that it would be dairy free. It was only when I got home that I read the ingredients label and realized that there was actually some milk in it. Not a problem for me, but for anyone who has lactose intolerance...be sure to check ingredient labels always. Anyways, this Rice drink was Sweet Potato flavored. Ever had a Sweet Potato flavored drink? I thought it sounded like a really interesting flavor, and of course...being on sale, that was extra incentive to try something new. I shared it with my daughter. I think she wasn't too impressed with it. Personally, I loved it. It really did taste like sweet potato. I found that quite impressive. This is a great place to stop for quick and tasty take out foods, and interesting drinks like the Sweet Potato Rice drink I tried. Their bakery section looked very tempting as well.

Well, instead of getting kung-fu, you get weird-fu. Man, there are so many cultural misappropriations, it is not even funny. This is how dominant culture sees Asians- "you all look alike" "you are all the same". For starters, signages. They got these 70's English Fonts mimicking Asian characters. And weird goofy sayings like "Wok with confidence" or "stretch your imagination ". It is so non-asian. I can see the designer did a quick a google of what asian culture is all about and just stuck it in. It demonstrates how little respect they have for the differences and nuances of every very different asian cultures there are. Any proud Asian will find the design of the place highly offensive and culturally insensitive. We walked around looking at various food, produce and prepped food area. Didn't find anything remotely competitively priced. The future is here and so are the prices. Expensive. We were asking ourselves who is the target market? Asians? You have two successful Korean grocery stores across the street : HNS and Hi-Mart. Then there is the Chinese Supermarket TNT in Coquitlam Centre and Lougheed who has none of these issues. Their key market will likely be the indifferent and price-proof non-asians. We capped our journey with their cooked offerings. We got the 2 meat combo with rice. We went with BBQ duck and pork. Let's just say the duck was so dry and salty, I don't think I had worse duck in all of GVRD. I rather drive all the way to Richmond's HK BBQ Master as they have exact same price. One is world renown, other is hot garbage. Then I had to have the silly idea of ordering a drink at their "Harmony Cafe". My god. Although there were three people ahead of me, it took forever. I chalked it up to newbies. Literally four pair of hands went into making the London Fog I ordered. The last guy was reading the manual while making it. After he was finished he went to wash dishes and left the drink on the table. Had to hail another staff to fulfill my order which included Portuguese Egg tarts. This took over twenty minutes. It was way too long. Overall, I understand this is a new business and a grand opening but shouldn't they have operations smoothed out prior to opening their doors? One star for the Portuguese Tart and another for the polite, albeit confused, staff. I will check back in a few months after their newness is ironed out, if I ever come back.
