I typically prefer Thrifty's over Safeway as I feel like they typically have more organic and gluten free options here. The prices are not so thrifty though, groceries can be expensive here. Anyways I came here today because I wanted to buy some supplements as I'm a bit of a health nut so I was in the vitamin/supplement section plus I wanted to use my gift card for something as this woman who I guess was working in the vitamin/supplement section approached me saying "Can I help you with anything or are you just looking?" I just felt awkward because her tone of voice was not friendly and when I replied "No, thank you, I'm okay, with a smile" she didn't smile back, just had a grumpy, bitter look on her face. I kind of felt more like she was suspicious I was going to steal something and I was being racially profiled rather than someone genuinely wanting to assist me. I would encourage management to talk to their staff, especially the young cashiers ( hate to be a curmudgeon ) that it likely would be best to halt their personal conversations while they are checking groceries. Higher end grocery store for a chain store. Decent general grocery options & alternative prepared foods selections. Lots of baked goods & to-go items. As a single person that's not in a permanent home when traveling here in BC, I like that there's different sizes of packages & ability to still pick single items too. Unfortunately there always a long wait at the deli (always appears to be one person, maybe two, that serve & rest are only prep people). I've yet to ever get any eye contact in the bakery area (that is if there's anyone even behind the counter), so I've only tried some smaller pre-packaged items. I do have to say when you do get served, it is worth the wait. As salads, samosas & wraps have all been deliciously prepared & taste fairly fresh. Lots of fun Christmas & seasonal treats with this last shopping trip in Dec 2023. However, sugar is hard to find. There's currently a shortage, as indicated by the limit. That is if you're even lucky to get a bag that you're looking for. Be sure to wonder around to the far area past the coolers if you're looking for advent calendars or gift items. Clean & bright store. However, if you're sensitive to a lot of light, might want to bring a hat or wear sunglasses in so your migraine isn't triggered. Larger aisles make it easy to look for things but closer to entrance & tills does feel a bit like a maze. The noise level of music also seems to be hit & miss for my migraine sensitive ears. If you do manage to find yourself in the organic foods & bulk area (easily missed as the aisle doesn't connect to the mail walk area to the tills), it's worth slowing down. As there's some neat options I haven't seen in somewhere like the other big chain stores. I also noticed there's organic or alternative options usually placed within the other areas like in aisles with baking, coolers, etc. Free parking underground in P1 (remember to register plate) with dropped sidewalk around vehicle registration/entrance to accessible escalator that would make it easy enough to to take the cart to parkade if needed. It is tricky for canes users & I wouldn't want to imagine the balance with crutches due to the sloped angle but I'm sure many much appreciate the accessibility with those using baby strollers, wheelchairs & walkers. As a cane user, I do find it tight to walk off the escalator & navigate past the shopping carts. I will also give a heads up to consider parking other than the designated handicap spots (unless you have someone drop & pick you up at the slopes sidewalk areas). As it's extremely hard to get in & out & mobility safety is questionable with the speed people exit the parkade at that main exit area. I personally select to park around the other side of the escalator entrance. Less chance cars won't see me trying to get into my vehicle or walk into the store, no oddly placed pillars near the door areas (handicap people like myself usually need to open their doors wider to maneuver in & out of the vehicle) & intriguingly there's more sloped sidewalk options away from the handicap parking... Overall, I enjoy browsing in here, it is a convenient location & the product is good. Free parking is appreciated out of your rain. However, I do feel like the prices are higher than what one would find at other stores & parking in handicap (as previously mentioned) is a logistical challenge. read more

Store selection for different types of cheeses wasn't great. We were looking for mozza cheese to make caprese salad but they had none. The cashier was also a tad unprofessional. From the time she started dealing with our items to the end she chatted more with a coworker than with us as customers. She pretty much ignored us and literally stopped what she was doing with our checkout process to talk to the other employee which was a bit frustrating not to mention rude. I mentioned to her that she may want to engage with the customer a bit more rather than chatting with a coworker throughout our checkout. Customer service is one of the easiest skills a person can have. Smile, great your customer, a little light chatting if the customer is willing and complete focus on what you're doing until the task is done. What I like about Thrifty Foods is that it is an one stop shop. It has a pharmacy, meat shop, flower shop, sandwich section, among all sorts of consumer needs sections. It even has a coffee stand if you happen to need a pick me up. But....ladies and gents, this is by no means a "frugal" discount store as the name suggests. I love Thrifty Foods. Too bad I do not live near Port Moody now. If I do, I will probably be here a lot. As what other Yelpers mentioned, the prices are definitely not cheap but they are ok. I like the variety of fresh meat and seafood available from the counter. It reminds me a little of Whole Foods. When I am here, I tend to get the store-made, pre-seasoned food like stuffed mushroom caps, seafood salad, fresh sausage and sausage meat. They are really good. The sushi is decent too. I will say shop here for the fresh food. You can probably go elsewhere for the sundries where you can do price comparison. I saw huge bone marrows too. The sign say for dogs, but I am thinking if we can cook it too for soup and stuff? read more

This is a really lovely grocery store in a local community that carries just about anything an average person might need or want to eat. As someone who has not quite mastered the art of cooking, or adulting in general by extension, I greatly appreciate the offerings of the hot bar, which present ready to eat hot dishes in a self-serve buffet format. The buffet and deli section is best avoided if you are on a diet. Overindulgence in the lovely fresh sandwiches, salads, hot bar, and salad bar could leave you falling right through the floor and into the underground parking structure in the basement. Assuming you don't grow too wide to fit through the automatic sliding doors in the first place. As a socially awkward person, I have a tendency to gravitate towards self-checkout lanes. On one visit, all the self-serve lanes were occupied, and a team member called Callum waved me over. He was very kind and patient, even after I forgot Thrifty Foods was a Sobey's brand and presented my Save On More rewards card. (I mean, there are so damn many of these chains, how am I supposed to keep track of them all?) Callum kindly reminded me that they takes Air Miles, and didn't even blink when my worn out card from 2014 took multiple attempts to scan. I felt so bad for holding up the line, even if it wasn't for very long. If all store representatives were like Callum, I would find the attended checkout lanes far more favourable and shun the machines. read more

Quite small for a Thrifty and not that many selections for this location but parking lot right outside and bus stops at walking distance. They do optimum points too so that's nice. Some items are more expensive than superstore though so I do usually shop here. Sometimes the items that's on discount or sale is about the same price as regular priced items in superstore. read more

I believe Thriftys is part of the Safeway chain. First of all, the staff are generally fantastic. The seafood parlor is taken care of by a great team. I like to duck down here to get fresh salmon and the occassional oysters before heading back up to the condo for a night in. (Note: I stopped eating oysters after reading an article that says they can feel pain). Thriftys has a little Asian section where I can pick up noodles, and a pizza area for fresh and delicious pizza. The OK rating is because the prices are quite high here. We also get charged 50c for a bag, which I feel is a little high, but the good side is it encourages people to reuse bags. If you're driving, you can park downstairs. But be warned - those lots are very narrow! A great supermarket if you're just in the area or live in Suterbrook, but I wouldn't recommend anyone to go out of their way for it. The pharmacy would rate a 15 out of 10. Phenomenal service. Much better than I have ever gotten elsewhere. The fish smell at the back of the store that was there for a long time was off putting, and took many months for them to deal with. I've told staff about stale dated dairy products in their case and on going back the following two days, noted that the products had not been removed from the shelf. Pretty bouquets. Cut stems and put in water within ten minutes of purchasing, and when I drove the flowers to my sister's home in Langley the next day - still in the vase with water - a number of them had wilted. It was a disappointing arrangement, and certainly not their least expensive - around $40.00. Usually their food selection is good, but it is very expensive. read more

I agree with one of the other reviewers - why is it called Thrifty Foods when it is actually Expensive Food? I used to love Thrifties and paid the higher prices because of that. But since it's been bought out by the big guys I have little use for them especially this one in Port Moody. I have been stopping by recently on Wednesdays and have not had great experiences. They recently changed the parking so no more convenient free parking outside - you have to pay. EVen if you use the underground you still have to stand in line and register your vehicle for a short period of free parking. Very off-putting from the start. Every Wednesday I go and they are out of more than half the flyer items By 6 pm the soups are packed up, the bulk bakery bins and muffin trays are mostly empty. Last night no extra lean ground beef, ambrosia apple bin empty and one other flyer item I can't remember . It also angers me that they put up in house hand written signs to try to make the place look all homey and local. Like they had a hand written sign on butter that said "local" when it was clearly from Alberta. And then the Avalon Dairy sign was a total lie that said "Avalon Dairy is a local family run dairy farm since 1996"(They actually meant 1906! LOL) This is a flat out lie as Avalon is owned by a giant Chinese company - look them up. This is the classics case of an awesome local company creating a great thing based on principals and ethics and then selling out for cash. A conveniently located store for those who live around Suterbook / Newport. It's well stocked and provides a good variety including a deli, seafood, meat counter and a bakery. Lots of parking underground and a clean store, the only knock is their prices are roughly 25% more than the same items at Walmart. I am easily in this grocery store five times a week, as convenience of location keeps me popular with the staff. Speaking of staff, constantly friendly and helpful, willing to chat and all smiles. The store layout is standard for a higher end style market, they have all the bells and whistles: Olive Cart, Deli, Bakery, Flowers, Organic Veg section, Fish and Meat Counters. The take out pizza counter will sell you balls of dough, my preference is the multi-grain, for about $2. Since this store is heavily laden with these specialties, it is on the more expensive side of things. Take a look at the flyers at the front entrance though, you can almost always find a deal if you aren't dead set on having the truest shopping list adventure. -The middle aisles are confusing with how they are stocked for canned goods -A majority of their dairy/egg section is sourced from Vancouver Island -Tons of free parking in an underground lot This grocery store is the anchor for Suter Brook...well that and the government liquor store. read more

The fish department is vile. It stinks so bad you can smell in in the Produce section. Not only that but it always smells fishy. Fresh seafood should NOT smell fishy. You would never eat at a sushi resteraunt that smelt like Suterbrooke Thrifty's fish department. No other Grocery store smells like it.The fish shop acroos the way in New Port Village never stinks. Love this location and the layout of this store. Even compared to some of the other Thrifty's stores near by. They have a great glutten free selection, dairy free variety as well and everything is very easy to find. The store is not overly big but I can always seem to find everything I need in here. Thrifty Foods is my favorite too as other reviewers. I like that the store is not super big, which is just a great maze and take so long to get in and out. I have better things to do than that! Good selection of products, good layouts and displays as well. Like the point system that can convert to Aeroplan. Like the "bonus point" promotion, like the "buy one-get one free" promotion as well. Good service from staff always. They welcome you to talk directly to the butchers, sushi makers, cake makers, and deli attendants if wanting to get something you want. I don't feel like I am "hunting" for food when I go shopping at this store. It is more like going to your own community's market to get the local food you want. A 'thumb-up' 1. to their receipts.... they try to keep them short and use both sides! A store that really cares about the environment. 2. to their reusable bags policy... you are encouraged to bring the reusable bags to the store. Being from the Island, I've shopped at Thrifty's since 1986. We moved to New Westminster recently, so I searched for the closest Thrifty's and was happy to drive weekly to the Port Moody store. Out of the many locations I've shopped, the one in Port Moody is very disappointing. I've given it two years, but whoever is managing this store, it sure is far from what I would expect from Thrifty's! There have been many pricing errors, errors with Air Miles, and some staff seem indifferent and/or very curt. Recently, I asked for cyclamen plants that were in the flyer. Boy did I feel like I was interrupting the two ladies at the flower department when I asked where to find them. One walked me over to the cyclamen and said those weren't the ones on sale and the others didn't come in. That was it - no offer of the cyclamen they had (it was $2 more) or even a rain check. Today was the final straw when I noticed I had been overcharged yet again for a sale item. It was only $2, but it took 10 mins. to correct the error. With so many other grocery options, I'm saying goodbye to this Thrifty's. Not worth the time and frustration! read more

This location has been open for just over a year, and everytime I go I'm always amazed at the selections. The cheese vault is fantastic! There's a sushi bar, basic deli counter, and a fresh/hot sandwich & pizza bar in addition to the grocery selection you'd find in any store. While the prices are definitely higher than the Buy-Low and Superstore a few KMs down the road, I find they have the best selection of high quality produce, a good variety of meats and grocery products, a lovely deli and the most helpful and courteous staff of anywhere I shop. The store is clean, well lit and accessible and (unlike so many other stores these days) still have a floral department. I am always willing to pay more for great quality and service, and on that level Thrifty in Suter Brook certainly delivers. read more

Thrifty foods always seem to have beautiful looking stores that are very organized. My review is for the fire stone pizza. It is delicious, the only thing is that it takes a while if they are busy as they only have one person making the pizzas. You can call in an order for lunch or whenever. They also sell by the slice. Watch your tongue if you get it as it comes out of the oven, it is extremely hot from the stone! You'll be drooling though as you wait for it to cool down lol. read more

Love coming here for all my grocery shopping. It can be on the pricier side but, their sales are awesome! Especially during BOGO. The staff are all amazing, especially the ladies at customer service. They are all so nice and provide the best customer service of any of the grocery stores around here. They always have everything I need in stock, and the occasional time they don't, they do rain checks here! The store is very clean and their produce is always great, very fresh. I'm biased, I love having a grocery store across the street. This Thrifty is new and not too thrifty, perfect for neighbourhood shopping. Very clean and all the deli items are always fresh. Lots of parking underground and easy to get around the store. I actually really love this place. I wish it was slightly more affordable like the name says. Although there's a lot of good sales on usually I still find that when I walk away with the quantity is it compared to when I walk away with when I go to you know at Saveon or Safeway. Although this is probably the closest grocery store to where I live, I don't come to Thrifty's to do my regular grocery shopping. Recently I had to pick up a can of tomatoes and so I stopped by for the first time since moving to the area. I was impressed by the layout and look of the store. It definitely has a more high end atmosphere than most grocery stores which I was surprised by. They had a decent seafood section and deli/sandwich area with take-out items which is something I'll keep in mind. It's funny that it's called Thrifty's when it's not so much the case, but it's convenient for me when I'm in a pinch. read more

Normally I'm pretty impressed with most Thrifty Foods, but not this time. The power was out so we picked up some roaster potatoes and greek salad from the deli, and a cooked barbeque chicken. Got home, bit into the roaster potatoes... they were frozen...yuck! The greek salad also looked and tasted like it was sitting in its juices for days. If I make a greek salad at home it would take days before it would appear like this salad. I'm not interested in frozen or days old food, whatever happened to fresh!
