This practice is transitioning to "Zen Dental" and will no longer accept certain forms of insurance. I found this out shortly before an appointment, and informed that my insurance is now Out of Network, meaning I would need to pay in full and then request reimbursement. I called my insurance company to verify this, and they confirmed that Dental Passion is still in network-- meaning I would not be eligible for direct reimbursement. When I called back to discuss this with the office, they admitted it will take several months before the transition to Zen Dental is complete. They insisted I would need to pay up front, even though my insurance would not agree to reimburse me given their current in-network status. Such a shame to see that this new practice is behaving unethically. Needless to say, I will be finding a new dentist. read more

Started coming here as I needed a new dentist upon moving (my last one was great but in Brooklyn), and my now-wife came here. Dr. Byrd, her go-to-, was absolutely great. The front desk staff and dental hygienists are also very nice. So all in all it was a good fit initially. However, Dr. Byrd left unexpectedly so I had been seeing whatever dentists were available. There is 1 dentist I liked a lot (think it was Dr. Yao) I liked a lot. I did not like the younger Asian gentlemen I had twice (don't think it was Dr. Shick but could be wrong); each time I saw him, I had teeth (different in each case) that were in imminent need of care as they were developing cavities. Next time I see another dentist, and there is no issue despite my home routine not changing; even when the previous doctor was showing me the X-rays he did, I didn't really see the issue then either. Extremely annoying that this guy wanted to do what would've been unnecessary work to charge more, however he didn't get it over on me and the actions of 1 person don't reflect on the rest of the staff. I'm finding a new dentist anyway since I've moved further away and they no longer accept my insurance. Would recommend giving this place a shot but just learning the names of the docs so you can keep seeing 1 you like versus who wants to max out your insurance. read more

My veneer popped off during the day I was in a panic to get it fixed and thought I'd run in to ask for help. Dr. Schick seems like a really great guy. I had a fllling replaced 4/15 by one of his associates. It was a large filling, a big job, but I was in and out of the office in under 30 minutes, it felt rushed. Afterwards I could feel an open "crack" between the bottom of the filling and the gumline that you could get your fingernail into. A few weeks later, it was bothering me, so I went in. Dr. Schick said I should floss around the tooth more. A couple weeks later, it was still bothering me. I went in 5/5, and he slapped in some cement, which he didn't even smoothe out, so it's rough and bumpy. It seems he does not want to redo it and give me a proper filling. Now , a month and a half later, It still bothers me-- when I drink water, chew anything, all the time. I'm going to see if they will do the right thing and replace the first filling, and then take it from there. I hope so. WIll follow up. read more

I had been a patient of the previous dental practice in this same space and stayed when Dr. Shick took over. I have found Dr. Shick to be a great guy and a good dentist. Also, any of the other dentists that are there are also good. They are accommodating and flexible, and generally extremely pleasant to deal with. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this practice for someone looking for a dentist, it's pretty easy to get an appointment, and if you can't get in to this location, there is another office on Roosevelt Island (something the receptionist will not tell you-I can't figure out why she wouldn't-but she isn't particularly pleasant, the one negative). read more

The first visit with Dr. Shick included a procedure I still don't think I needed. I never felt pain in that tooth before and have only felt pain since the procedure. The hygienist also cut the inside of mouth a few times with the X-ray cards. On my second visit, with Dr. Byrd, I waited an hour and left without being seen. read more

I was pleasantly surprised with my first visit to Dental Passion. I've had some bad experiences with dentists in New York, but a friend recommended this place, and I'm so glad she did! The office was clean and the atmosphere was professional and caring. I didn't have to wait at all for my appointment. I saw Dr. Masuka (or maybe it's spelled Dr. Masuga. I'm not sure.) She did a nice job reassuring me and explaining the best procedure for my tooth. (Basically, I had one big scary deep cavity that she filled today. Another will be dealt with in a few weeks.) I really felt like she took my situation seriously and gave me the careful individualized treatment I was hoping for. After I return to Dental Passion in a few weeks to deal with cavity number two, I may update this review again. Trust me, you will want this person to be your new dentist. Sit back a minute and let me explain why I say this, and I'm going to be a little long-winded here. First, so you know, I am somewhat spoiled as far as health care is concerned. I am originally from a city that has some excellent teaching hospitals, which may explain why in all my years there, any time I have been to a physician, dentist, chiropractor or other provider, everyone is EN POINTE. And I mean everyone, from the doctor to the front desk to the guy that empties the garbage cans. 99% of the time, people do their job with courtesy and professionalism, because the doctors are graded and the staff is well paid. They keep that professionalism when they go into practice, because they are taught well and it is engrained in them. I had assumed this was the standard of care that I would encounter when I moved to NYC, but I was quickly proven wrong. Why this is, I am not sure, since we supposedly have the best schools in the country. If you have lived here for awhile, you know how hard it is to find a great health care provider. Basically, you are blindly picking a doctor out of an enormous list of names and addresses. You look for university affiliated practices, and are disappointed with the endless phone tree and time that it takes to schedule an appointment. God help you if there is a billing error and you need to talk to accounting. You randomly call offices in fancy neighborhoods and are shocked at the idiocy and rudeness of the person who answers the phone. You find a place where the receptionist is nice and the office is clean, but then you get there and wait almost 2 hours for your brief appointment. You ask your friends, and they give you the name of somebody an hour train ride away in the boroughs, or in the wilds of Long Island, or Jersey. You look at yelp reviews for compliments, or valid complaints or frivolous ones. You spend way too much time trying to find that perfect office. In the end, it is like sticking your hand in a goldfish bowl full of raffle tickets at the fair and hoping for the best. Well, congrats, you have won with this business! Here's how I will back up this claim: 1) Reception: The first impression you have of an office is the front desk person and how you are treated on the phone. This lady was nice, she was professional and she made switching dentists very easy. When I had a problem with the other office not sending my Xrays after I had filled their form out and made several calls, she just said 'give me the number' and got the Xrays emailed over pronto. I didn't have to waste any more time with drama, she just did everything for me. And she called me back when she said she would, which is practically unheard of in NYC. I ended up picking this dentist because of the yelp reviews, but also because the receptionist presented a good vibe for the office. 2) Patient rapport: This is a skill that you either have or you don't. More doctors than you would think here in the city are obviously very learned but have issues interacting with patients. Admittedly I am not the ideal dental patient (I blame this on watching the Marathon Man at an early age, and many childhood cavities). To this day, I am always a little anxious when I walk into a dentist office, even for a cleaning. The dentist (Dr. Shick) was professional but also nice and mildly funny. He immediately put me at ease, and I totally forgot to be nervous. He did not aggressively poke and pick at my teeth in a rushed manner. He gave a reasoned answer to the questions I had about my gums, but did not try to upsell, and he gave me very clear and detailed advice on dental care. Overall, I thought that he was great, and will stay at this office now. 3) It was easy to schedule an appointment, and the prices were reasonable. So stop stalling, if you are afraid of dentists, don't wait years for a checkup like me! I know that the city is so expensive that we tend to short ourselves on things like checkups, but just put that some of that nightclubbing money aside and spend it on your pretty smile! read more

Finally found a good dentist to go to in NYC! After searching around and trying two others who seemed pretty shady & wanted to do things to my teeth that my hometown doctor totally disagreed on (yes, I got a second opinion thankfully from someone I trust & whom I would have had do the work back home), I found this place through my insurance provider website, and I picked it solely on Dr. Shick's reviews and location. I am going to agree though with the other reviewers that the receptionist can be a little rude and come off unfriendly, but she does do a good job when you move past the scheduling "new patient" paperwork, insurance verifying, etc. I personally almost cancelled my appointment with this place because of her- very unfriendly, cuts you off, kind of nasty, rushing tone- BUT sooo glad I stuck it out and gave the dentist a chance. I was just scheduled for a cleaning/check up. Dr. Masuga was wonderful! Very calming, patient, friendly, thorough & efficient in her job. The "best part" of my cleaning/visit was that instead of using that terrible little pointy "pic" to clean your teeth & feel like someone's yanking your tooth out, they use this little water pressed tool that is not like a "pic" at all and your mouth isn't in pain an hour after your visit. I was AMAZED. I even asked her why she didn't b/c I started to think I wasn't getting the right cleaning! She then explained to me that there is a new tool they use instead because it's easier on the gums. It was quick, painless cleaning, and my teeth looked great. She took a lot of time looking over the x-rays of my teeth as well so that was re-assuring that she really actually cared about each & every tooth and got a good look at them. So yes- I suggest sucking it up with the receptionist at first and go to this place. The schedules are great and they will fit you quickly. *They do not like Zoc Doc! So just call to schedule....and prepare yourself to possibly deal with the receptionist :) read more

I've been seen by numerous dentists here for almost two years, and I'm happy to say that I would recommend them to anyone. The ladies up front are extremely friendly and they know what they're doing. Every time I come in for a visit they make sure I know what's cleared with my insurance before any issues may arise. I went to this practice last week for the first time. I was anxious as soon as I walked in: 5:00 on a weekday and the place was empty. The assistant was unprofessional. I expected to see Dr. Shick but he was not to be seen. I wanted to give them the benefit of the doubt and returned today for a brief recheck, but got the same odd feeling when all the staff were gathered around the front desk and again there were no other patients. WARNING: DO NOT COME HERE...This place is REEE-DICULOUS!!! My sister and mother both went there and had serious dental issues after this place. My poor sister went in for a routine six month cleaning and came out with an evaluation of having SIX supposed cavities. May I add my sister has had pretty good dental history up until Dental whatever....After having these SIX cavities filled in less than two weeks time was the beginning of her horrid year of four out the six root canal treatments! Not to mention the two left are extremely sensitive. Oh and she had to pay out of pocket for this "dentists" charges on her insurance for his "services". Now for my mother she went there for a routine cleaning as well, this was before my sister, and came out with two extractions, and a set of dentures that might as well cost twenty-five cents. Not to mention Dental Passion did charge an extra $2,000 dollars for the dentures on top of what the insurance had already covered. She went to a reputable dentist who informed her of the massive bone loss due to the quality of the dentures. A root canal was also performed without notice and the tooth is now cracked and must be extracted. The dentist, Robert Schick, who might I add owns the place and two other locations should not practice at all as a dentist or in any medical field. Oh and by the way how in the heck does he practice dentistry and his teeth need work?!!!! This place is ABSURD and they should be closed down for malpractice. I got a lot of fillings done and was in a lot of pain for a very very long time after. A couple of the fillings are still hurting me so I returned to have the doctor take a look to see if they need fixing, but since my dental insurance wasn't active anymore they couldn't bill the insurance company for their very expensive "exam". Basically they told me that in order for them to even check if it's that filling that's the problem, they'll have to charge me, which is not what they said before I had the filings done. I always want a great smile, now I have thanks to all the doctors at Dental Passion.I had gone to so many dentists who tried to sell me crowns and veneers, and they all told me veneers and crown are the only options. I was giving up when my friend told me about her dentist whom she loves so much. I was skeptical, however, I still went in for consult, to my surprise, Dr Shick told me, that I just need to removed the old fillings which were 15 years old on the front teeth and bleach the teeth, then you will have the smile you want. I thought it could not be that easy. Anyway, there were some cavities under the old fillings, which I already know but did not bother to get fix. I figure to try it. I did the take home bleach as Dr Shick recommended, after one week, I did see my teeth much whiter, but the old fillings really stand out now. Then, I had the fillings done, the fillings took almost one hour. After the fillings were done, he gave me a mirror to see, I was stunt of how teeth are so beautiful. All this time, I did not know simply changing the filling and bleaching were the solutions. however, Dr Shick did warn me of possible crowns in future, but for now, he think I should be OK. I just want to said thank you to all the staffs and how honest they are. read more

He has a great sense of humor, does excellent work and never suggests or undertakes unnecessary procedures. I never made it in to see Dr. Shick because I couldn't get past the rude receptionist. I saw a couple of negative comments about her on here and they are definitely true! After scheduling my appt. through Zoc Doc, I had multiple phone conversations with the receptionist due to scheduling issues ("this Zoc Doc thing has gotten so confusing!") and her claiming that the insurance I gave could not possibly be my dental insurance because that company does not offer dental insurance (the company name is on my dental insurance card clear as day). The most confusing part was that she would be completely rude and short with me one minute, then switch to being quite pleasant the next minute. After a few days, I realized that I needed to reschedule again (my mistake), but I just couldn't deal anymore and decided to just cancel. I'm disappointed since Dr. Shick has great reviews, but I don't know if it's worth it! My recommendation if you do decide to try this place- call them directly to make your appt. instead of going through ZocDoc. I think ZocDoc is great, but it sounds like this office is still learning how to use it. read more

I initially saw Dr. Schick, however, he works at the 96th St. office it seems once a week. Thus i had to go to another Dentist. I didn't think anyone could be nicer than Dr. Schick, but Dr. Koo proved me wrong. I have to get missing teeth filled, Dr. Koo was very thorough in explaining my options. She was professional and informative. Actually the entire staff is extremely patient and kind, the dental assistants/hygenist and receptionists. The office itself was very clean and well kept. Also, do not know if it matters to you, but they also offers an ethically diverse group of Dentists. The sitting area for the guests could use sprucing. It is dark. It could use some lighting. You would think this would be the norm, however, it is not. The Surgeon Dr. Rastegar in Great Neck who pulled my teeth was quite the opposite. The office and Dr. were very cold and perfunctory. Dr. Koo and Dental Passion bring the humanity, warmth and sense of service to the dental business. Hope it catches on with other dentists. read more

Dr. Schick made 2 crowns for me and did an excellent job, including selecting the perfect color. The crowns blend smoothly with the gum line and look natural. He polished a bonded tooth that became discolored and improved its appearance. He did 2 fillings using bonding material on the front of the teeth and substantially improved the appearance of both. It turns out that bonding that covers the entire front of a tooth as an alternative to expensive veneers has gone by the wayside as it requires painstaking attention to detail and is not as durable or attractive. My expectation that composite filling material would perfectly cover entire teeth was based on what turns out to be an obsolete practice. That dates me! Dr. Schick recommended a prosthodontist for cosmetic work. Dr. Schick is down to earth and shares his knowledge and acts in the best interests of his patients. He doesn't double book and takes his patients on time, often early. He winds up waiting for his next patient sometimes. There is a problem but I don't want it to detract from the rating. I report it now as an update. His secretary/office manager is seriously deficient in ability to productively communicate with patients. It does not matter how many times a patient explains something to her. She cannot understand. It is a waste of time to attempt to explain anything to her. It reached critical mass. I had to make an appointment with another dentist for a cleaning just to avoid the frustration that I would experience trying to communicate to her the nature of the appointment that I would seek to schedule. This is in the Upper West Side office only. To circumvent the problem, it's best to speak to the other person who works at the front desk when possible. read more
