I rate Duke Energy three stars. It's OK…read more We've been Duke Energy customers in Chapel Hill since June 2020, so for about four years now. I also have a residence in Atlanta and have been a Georgia Power customer there since 2001, at two different Atlanta homes. My three-star rating for Duke Energy is based on comparisons of my experiences between Duke Energy and Georgia Power. It comes down to two main things: 1. I've experienced way more power outages with Duke Energy than with Georgia Power. It's not even close. There have been more outages in four years with Duke Energy than in 23 years with Georgia Power. I know there are many factors that can make some homes more susceptible to outages than others. The places I've lived in Atlanta are more urban and dense than where we live in Chapel Hill, but Chapel Hill isn't in the boonies either. In Chapel Hill, we live close to I-40, apartment complexes, shopping centers, and office parks. Also, the terrain and weather in Chapel Hill and Atlanta are similar. Therefore, it comes down to Duke Energy's grid simply being not as reliable as Georgia Power's. Duke Energy also has a lot of random power blips, which is annoying. 2. When there's a power outage, Duke Energy's mean time to repair is poor. I've experienced multiple outages where it took several hours per outage for power to be restored. On August 15-16, 2023, it took about 24 hours for power to be restored. I lost over a full workday because of it. Because I've experienced so many outages over the last four years, I've grown accustomed to the company's outage alerts, their online outage map, and I even follow Duke Energy employee Jeff Brooks on X (Twitter) for outage information: https://x.com/DE_JeffB Again, in 23 years with Georgia Power at two different homes, I can't recall experiencing any sort of extended outage. If there even is an outage, most of the time, it's just a blip. And I haven't gotten familiar with any of Georgia Power's outage alerts or tools -- because I haven't had to. As a retail customer, Duke Energy has had slightly lower electricity bills than Georgia Power. However, the difference is on the order of magnitude of about 1¢/kWh (not significant). Also, Duke Energy sent us a "free" box of 16 energy-efficient LED light bulbs (9W soft white, 60W equivalent) for being new subscribers back in 2020. That was nice. After four years, I've used seven of the 16 bulbs. We live near the Chapel Hill-Durham border, which is also near the Orange County-Durham County border. These two Triangle cities and counties, along with other Triangle cities and counties (e.g., Raleigh, Wake County, Chatham County) are in Duke Energy Carolinas and Duke Energy Progress overlapped territories. Duke Energy Carolinas is the old Duke Power that I grew up knowing in Guilford County. Duke Energy Progress is the old Progress Energy, which was the combination of the old Carolina Power & Light (headquartered in Raleigh) and Florida Power Corporation. The old Duke Power was and Duke Energy today is headquartered in Charlotte. According to our apartment's management, our complex is served by DEP. During the wind storm we had last weekend, Duke absolutely dropped the ball. Below is my experience…read moreas well as pictures of live wires blocking roadways for almost 30 hours unattended. #1 - the power was out for a total of 44 hours, which is completely unacceptable especially when other people 1/8th of the mile down the road were back up within 7 hours.We werent even provided with any updates and the time was stuck at 10:00 on 3/3/23 as expected time to be resolved, even after we went past that time frame. #2- It took over 27 hours for anyone from the power company to even show up in my area to take a look at anything. Power was lost at 2:30pm on 3/3/23 and the first time I saw anyone out here was at 5:00pm on 3/4/23. Also during this entire time, live power lines were laying in the middle of the roadway as a hazard to have to navigate around to get out of the neighborhood which is absolutely insane. I have pictures to prove this if you would like to see them. #3 - we were finally alerted at 6:00pm on 3/4/23 that the power was restored. We headed home only to find that that was a LIE. Power was still off. We had to re report the outage and was then told it would be noon on 3/5/23 before it would be restored. (finally was restored around 10:30am on 3/5/23 44 hours after outage started). Also, we as of this time, we were the only road in all of canton without power according to the outage map. Why did no one come back until the next day? #4 - due to having no power/heat during wintertime, we had to have a two night stay in a hotel because we have an infant child that cannot stay in that environment. That cost almost $350 itself #5 - due to the power being off for so long, $400 worth of food was spoiled and had to be transported to the dump At the end of the day, we were lied to, forgot about, left with dangerous hazards, and over $750 out of pocket. I am contemplating taking this story to WLOS or another media outlet as this is ridiculous and no one else should have to go through this and Duke should be held accountable to higher standards than what we received as loyal paying customers.

They were very friendly and gave me a good price. I had them do a credit check so I can open an account and start the process of replacing my current tank and having a new account with him. After a week, no one had contacted me from the local office to come out to do a site evaluation. I then contacted my representative at superior, who then had someone from the local Freeman office contact me, his name was Tony. He promised to follow up with me after I emailed over the current terms at superior gave me, and he was going to follow up to come out for a site valuation. Tony indicated to me that the price that was quoted in the email is probably not a correct price, but he said he would follow up and get back with me. That never happened! I'm very frustrated with having a credit check run to open account, and never open the account. I would've never had that done if I had known or customer service was so bad. I have contacted several propane companies in the area and most, if not all seem to have horrible, follow-through, or communication, or access to live people. If you want a good propane company, that's family owned and provides customer service along with great prices. Contact Appalachian Energy. They're wonderful, and that's who I chose to go with.
