The fountain!
Morgan C.

If you ever wanted to feel like you're in a Rat Pack movie from the 1960s or simply just in the middle of Rome without ever leaving present day Providence, look no further than DePasquale Square, a little taste of Old Napoli in Rhode Island! This charming piazza's fountain centerpiece attracts families, lovers, and everyone in between to sit and while away the afternoon making wishes on coins and watching the live entertainment! That's right - most evenings, the Square is vibrant with everything from traditional Italian music to a band headed by a Frank Sinatra impersonator that sounds just like Old Blue Eyes himself! A seat by the fountain is lovely, of course, but if you want to make a special night out of it, the patio at Venda Bar is the place to be. What better way to cap off a summer day than by tucking into a giant plate of homemade ravioli (their house specialty!), and listening to the crooners sing the standards of yesteryear? Sounds kind of amazing to me! The full schedule of events can be found on Venda's website, and run from May-October. DePasquale Square is a total hidden gem on Federal Hill, and no summer is complete without a visit to hear the live music and enjoy the unique surroundings!

What a perfect place to watch the Columbus Day Parade. Best seat in the house. The Square has several restaurants where one could eat an amazing Italian meal. This seems to be the center plaza where everyone congregates at. A beautiful fountain is in the center, a perfect place to take pictures. Each of the restaurants seem to have outside dining options as well as seating inside.

I mean, can it get more Rhode Island than this? From the beautifully restored fountain to Venda to the numerous other restaurants who share this outdoor oasis. We ended up with a reservation at Venda on one of the nights they had live music playing and it was absolutely incredible. A True federal hill experience! Such a fun night.

The host seemed surprised to see us despite being right on time for our reservation but we were seated right away after a quick exchange. Our server Erik came right over with a smile and continued to be a consummate professional throughout the evening. I wish I could have him be my server everywhere I go. We started the night with some seasonal cocktails. The spiced pear old fashioned was to die for. Complete with a solitary large cube and balanced flavors it was delicious. Our table had veal parm, linguine and white clam, and lasagna. Each dish was fresh and executed perfectly. It's a garlic lovers paradise but never overpowering, in a way any Nonna would approve. For dessert we split a slice of limoncello cake. The cake was so light and fluffy it was like eating air. Even the frosting was light enough where it didn't feel like we were stuffing ourselves to finish it. It's a smaller place so it gets busy quickly and can be a little loud. I would highly recommended a reservation as I don't think you'd have much luck getting a table on a weekend. There was a bar area with some seats but it's probably not easy to get a seat there either. As the old adage goes, if a restaurant is full all the time there's a good reason why ;)

Perhaps considered the most iconic mural in the current Downtown portfolio, Gaia's Still Here is a…read moreportrait of a contemporary Narragansett woman named Lynsea Montanari holding a portrait of her tribal elder, Wampanoag and Narangansett leader Princess Red Wing. The location of the 32 Custom House building (and the parking lot that was the former Daniels building) provides a sweeping view of the wall from the Weybosset bridge and river. According to the City Department of Art, Culture & Tourism, "Weybosset Street was a site where three important Indian trails met, one coming down from the north, the second up from the southeast Mount Hope region called the Wampanoag Trail, and the third up from Connecticut in the southwest called the Pequot Trail." Gaia's opening idea for the mural was to consider erasure, considering the landscape that existed before colonial settlement, asking the question of whose history gets recorded and whose doesn't. As he captures in his artist interview (viewable above), through partnership and permission seeking with the Tomaquag Museum, the work evolved into a narrative that captures a living person holding legacy and tradition, advocating for human rights and environmental justice, a people still here across time that continues today. As I volunteer at the Visitor Center, this is one of the public art pieces that most people ask about and it's part of the self guided public arts tour established by the Avenue Concept group.
