Ive rented from Dependable 4x in the last 10 years. All Jeeps. They were great to me and my family. The Jeeps are definitely not brand new and the tires are bit bald however worked well on the island. Can't beat the price... I prefer to give business to locally owned when I can so I am happy to rent again. read more

We love dependable cars. We have been using them for years. You get whatcha get, an island car. They have dings and are well used, but the company is trustworthy and honest. One time we got a car which we worried might not make it the whole week. We turned around and they gave us another. Look- you are not going to get the shiny new Jeep (which screams, break into me), you are going to get a car which blends in. You choose: take a risk and stand out or blend in like a local... Airport pick up and drop off went smoothly. Price was good. Jeep was in horrible condition. We took it to St John. They tell you that you take their cars to St John at your own risk, so if it breaks down that's on you. Not reassuring. It died one morning and we got a jump from our air bnb host. Could have been a lot worse. Honestly, I wish I had just paid the bit of extra money and gotten something newer, more reliable, with cold AC and a way to secure valuables. WORTH IT. Painless and zero nonsense. They pick you up, show you the car, sign some papers, and go adventure. When you're done, you drive it back, they take a look, you sign some papers, and they'll drop you off at the airport. Great service. Just take before and after pictures to protect all parties, clean the sand out, and don't smoke in it and you'll be fine. read more

Great service. Even after 2 flight delays, they had our Jeep ready for me at the Airport after hours. I landed in Florida for a layover with a message from them that they noticed that my flights were delayed and not to worry my Jeep would be there, which it wAs. They had the lowest price by $200 so I was not expecting a brand new vehicle. It was a 10-12 year old Jeep which was well used but in good running condition. We ran about 300 miles all over STJ with zero problems. They also allowed us to remove the top, which was nice. Most companies don't let you do that. I'm returning in March and already booked my Jeep through them for next year. read more

I used this company before and had always had good service even with the older cars but this year was the worst. I'm never using them again. They want to charge me for the car getting towed from the airport even though I followed all of their parking rules to the letter. I wish I could give negative star. This company ruined my vacation. I contact this company in October 2014 to rent a 4x4 from Nov. 27 to Nov 30. They sent me the contract through email and I thought everything is taken care of. When I arrive at St Thomas from San Juan, I tried to get in contact with this company. No body answers the phone. I thought they were probably busy, so I kept trying for about an hour, still no answer. I asked the rental car company in the airport including budget and Hertz. None of them have any vehicle available any more. I decided to take a taxi to the address listed on the contract they sent me. The taxi driver took us to a couple places and asked a couple people and we finally arrived at the right location. The door is closed and nobody is there. There is no sign explaining the situation either. I was devastated. There is no car available any more. It is very irresponsible. I understand it is a family business and there may be emergency. But at least call me ahead of time or email me to let me know, so that I can prepare alternative options. This company ruined my vacation at St Thomas and St John. read more

Well, it didn't break down and the car worked but it was really old and the interior was pretty gross. I did get a good price though. I'd use another car rental place if you want a newer more reliable vehicle. At the end of the day it got the job done but I was constantly scared that it was gonna break down or the brakes stop working on the steep hills of usvi. I'll probably rent elsewhere next time. They did pick up/drop off at the airport which is nice and they were super friendly. It's just the car they gave me was in pretty terrible shape. read more

So pass this company on by. Our Jeep was old and beat up. The passenger window was broken and would not raise up, which was a hassle with all the rainstorms that week. We pulled it up as high as we could and hoped for the best. When we returned the car we later got a call from the company saying the window was broken. I told them it had been the entire week and she basically didn't believe me. She then went in to say it was our responsibility to call them when we found the broken window. So they expected us to return the Jeep to St Thomas in our dime and time because they can't do their job in a reasonable manner. Ridiculous. read more

I do not recommend this business for anyone visiting St. Thomas USVI. first, upon booking the Jeep, I was told that it would be delivered and waiting for my wife and I at the baggage claim area. Upon gathering our baggage, I called this company to find out where the Jeep was and they told me it is at their office and I needed to pick it up there. They sent a driver to pick us up. After the 15 min wait for the driver, we arrived at the office. The Jeep they have us was a 2007 wrangler with bald tires, broken driver side rear view mirror, 2/3 tank of gas, and the roof was fixed to where it could not be removed (which is why you get a Jeep anyway!). None of this was disclosed at the time of rental btw. After asking if they had a different Jeep with decent tires (a must to drive around St. Thomas), they told me no and that the tires are fine and to take it or leave it. Seeing we didn't have a choice, we rolled the dice. The Jeep performed for us that week, but not without the wonder if we were going to get stranded or not. Upon our departure we returned the Jeep to the airport be their office due to a flight time change and we were in a time crunch. I called the office to have them pick up the Jeep from the airport and they gave me a hard time for this. After 20 min of explaining myself as to why we were not able to return to the office, they sent a guy to pick it up, all while charging me $37 that they did not tell me they were going to do. This business is shady, vehicles are in horrible condition, and the staff in the office is rude and has no business ethics. I recommend Hertz or Avis at the airport and will only be using on of those companies in future trips to the island. read more

The quote I received in the email was not what was on the final phone offer by $50. I got hung up on the first time after I said I couldn't understand what the lady was saying (it was extremely garbled). I called back and again and she was extremely rude and curt explaining the process--I am wondering if they rehired the previous lady who was supposedly fired. Overall, good service at a reasonable rate. I emailed them for a quote about 2 months in advance, and they responded in about 1-2 days. You have to call them to make reservations. I called, provided the dates and cost listed in the quote, along with my personal info, and we were complete within minutes. We arrived, called them to let them know we had arrived at STT, and Flex came to pick us up and gave us a quick intro to the island during the drive to their location. The ladies at the front desk were friendly enough, had our paperwork ready for processing; went back out to the parking lot, walked around the car with Flex to inspect the car for scratches or dents, and we were free to roam the island. As for returning the car, it was basically the same process, but in reverse order. The entire ordeal was very quick and painless. The way they go about payment is sort of strange for me, but it ended up being fine in the end--they start by charging a $500 hold on your card, then when you return the car, they replace the hold with the actual amount charged. This way, after you've returned the car, you walk away knowing the exact amount you've paid and won't be surprised by any hidden fees later. Note: while they do use older models of cars, their prices are lower than some other options on the island, so they sort of balance out. read more

It took a lot for me to write this review. I hate writing negative reviews but I'd hate it even more for a family to go through what we went through. I'll start with the good: the people that work here are very friendly. At least the woman was until we asked to return the car for a refund. She then got a little standoffish which is understandable, I guess. The employees are friendly but the cars are dangerous. The only reason I am writing this review is because the car was so bad and it's disappointing that they knew they were giving us a junk car. We rented the 2-door Jeep Wrangler but, when we arrived, for some reason it wasn't available. We were given a Jeep Commander that was in terrible condition. They knew it was in terrible condition because it was the car that they picked us up at the airport in. The entire car shook when being driven, especially when breaking, the seats had leather coverings that were broken, cracking, and flaking, and the light to service the 4WD was on. We mentioned that 4WD was extremely important to us because we were taking the car to STJ so to have the service light be on was shocking. We tried to give the car a chance, we drove it around the block, but we decided it was way too risky and we didn't want our vacation to be ruined because of this. I'm so shocked and disappointed that they thought this was an acceptable vehicle to give anyone. We are grateful that they let us return it for a partial refund. They charged us for a full day when we had only driven the car around the block. We were just so relived we were able to get rid of the car that we didn't even care about the charge. Before we drove the car off the lot, I mentioned to the woman that I was surprised about the poor condition of the car (at this point, we didn't even know about the mechanical issues. I was only speaking of the dings, dents, scratches, and tears) and she stated, "that's in better condition than the car you were originally supposed to get!". So, I guess that all of their cars are in poor condition? We almost assumed that this was the norm for renting cars on the island but I can assure you that it is NOT. We went to another car rental agency and paid nearly the same price for a brand new, well-kept, Jeep. read more

We have been loyal Dependable customers since 2009 and have rented no less than 20 times, probably more, for trips to both St. Thomas and St. John. While we have had some bumps with them over the years, in part because of our feedback, they have worked very hard to improve customer service and make the overall rental experience better. We were just there two weeks ago and our favorite Dependable employee, Akeel picked us up at the airport. He is a great guy, friendly, helpful and hardworking. We are always happy to see him. Some of the bad reviews from 8 or 9 months back were unfortunate because there was one employee who was horrible and singlehandedly ruined many peoples vacations. They have long since fired her and things are back on track. Don't rule out renting from them because of these old reviews. read more

When we first started going to USVI, I did a LOT of research on car rentals. I mostly heard "You can't take the vehicle to St. John," followed by "give me all your money, but stay on St. Thomas." I was thrilled when I found Dependable and have remained a loyal customer since that time. The prices are great. The service is amazing. They are close to the airport. Pick up at airport and drop off at the end of the trip. You vehicle will most likely not be brand new and beautiful, but it will get you where you want to go! This year we had our first car with a service problem, and Sherlita (spelling?) was AMAZING at offering options for how we would deal with the issue at hand. We rented a jeep from Dependable Car Rental in St. Thomas. It was a HORRIBLE experience from beginning to end. The first experience we had began at the airport. We were picked up by an employee that wouldn't help us load our bags and didn't have enouch common coutesy to even say hello. We tried making small talk (talking about the weather,etc) and he was so rude he didn't respond - other than to mumble under his breath. The vehicle wasn't any better. It was the worse vehicle we have ever rented. It was rusted, dented and basically just torn up. The side windows were removed from the vehicle due to the fabric being so torn up - you couldn't even put the windows on the vehicle. People we met in St. John (on the street) were asking where we rented the jeep because of the overall poor condition of the vehicle. We dreaded returning the vehicle expecting the same level of service we received on our arrival. We were not let down. The staff in the office was just as unfriendly and rude as expected. They didn't want to answer questions and made no attempt at customer service. I would not recommend this agency to anyone. The friendly family photo on the website is not the staff we met. Dependable Car is a great local company to rent from. Customer service was great, starting with after hours pick up. The car was in good condition. I had a mishap with a parking lot pole. The back bumper was dented. I was expecting the worst, however, what I received was the exact opposite. In fact, Dependable Car called me 2 couple hours later and said no charges are being administered. That was awesome .... Great customer service!!!! read more

I checked Yelp reviews before booking a rental car for our Trip to St. Thomas in August. I was a little nervous to book anything as few places had more than a few reviews. In the end we went with Dependable because they had the best prices. We knew we weren't going to be getting a shiny new car, and the one we got was as expected. Little scratched up inside, nice on the outside and clean. We had no complaints. We rented a Grand Vitara for a week for $460. We arrived and departed on Sundays and Dependable is not open on Sundays so on Saturday they dropped the car off at the airport and texted me a picture of it in the lot with instructions. We dropped it back off in the log the following Sunday the same way. We took pictures of it and texted them to Dependable. On Monday I got a reply that they had the car and were all set. The whole thing was very easy and we were happy with our experience. read more

Vehicles are in very poor condition and the customer service is horrible. I've rented from Dependable Car Rental in the past and I've never had such a horrible experience Fast forward two years later, I needed to rent a vehicle and decided I'll use them again. I was very disappointed. The car was dented and rusted, a hubcap was missing and the CD player was not working. I figured I only needed it for a few days and other companies were sold out due to the holiday season so I settled. When returning the car I was greeted with the worst customer service experience ever, thanks to Vanessa. We were picked up promptly from hotel and after returning the car, dropped off the airport. Also very reasonable rate.Highly recommended. Remember the office is only open from 8-5 seven days a week. We booked a jeep with Dependable and when we got there they only had 2 available and both of them were terrible. They had no back window because they said previous customers had ripped off the zippers but I don't understand why they wouldn't charge them for it and have them fixed. They were so old and run down and we didn't feel comfortable taking either. The staff that works there were extremely nice and tried to accommodate us but they couldn't with only 2 run down jeeps to choose from. We decided to go back to the rental company we used last year so they picked us up from Dependable and Dependable refunded us the money. So overall I feel bad giving a bad review because the people there were really nice, but the vehicles were horrible! I would never rent from them again. read more

A quick minute ride to the location to sign our contract and get directions. Nice friendly staff, family owned. Car was clean with a few dents (but it's to be expected). We recently went to St John (April 14th to 21st) and rented a Grand Vitara for the four of us from Dependable. We called from the airport and they picked us up in about 10 minutes. We drove back to their place along with our luggage which was very close (just outside the airport.) . We had rented from them once before several years ago and they were at a different location then, more back in the hills. Our car was ready to go as soon as we completed the paper work and we were on our way. The car performed fine and was up to dealing with the steep hills and the ridiculous driveway of the villa we stayed at on STJ. There is a slight concern in that while they allow you to take their cars to STJ on the car ferry, if you have a mechanical problem on you have to make your own arrangement for repair or tow back to STT. We gambled and won. We did have a flat (scrapped a curb) but that wasn't a problem when we returned. When we did return they checked us out in a few minutes and then drove us and our luggage to the airport. They took us in the car we just rented so we didn't even have to move our bags. Everyone was pleasant to deal with and the car was fine so a good experience. read more

True departure Story. Airport American Airlines computers down for hours myself and 2 small children unable to get boarding passes from STT & AA customer-no-service zombies. So in a panic I called DEPENDABLE, they stopped everything, went to airline website, logged me in, filled out forms, kept in phone contact throughout process, and were able to print out our boarding tickets. 100's of travels were waiting for hours in airport lobby nightmare!! we made our flight thanks to the great people at Dependable. i asked several other local offices to help me, all said NO, but Dependable was YES, YES, YES..will recommend to everyone. Everyone is happy when things go perfect, but when there is real trouble who has your back??? fyi- I can count on one hand the number of reviews I've written online in 40 years..this positive experience compelled me to pay it forward. Do not use this company! We rented a Jeep and confirmed the reservation a week before we arrived. Once we got there, they said no Jeeps were available. We were unhappy, but they did give us a new Suzuki. The lady mentioned that they usually charge more for this car, but she would honor the Jeep rate. When we returned the car, they walked several times around it looking for any possible damage, and the returned to the counter with the unwelcome news that we were going to be charged $150 extra for excessive sand. While there was a minute amount sand in the car (yes, we went to the beach), nothing that a quick vacuum wouldn't take care of and definitely not close to excessive. We felt threatened when the owner refused to unlock the car, which had my wife's purse and phone in it, until we paid the extra fee. This is NOT the same company we used several years earlier. WORST CAR RENTAL EXPERIENCE - BEWARE - NEW OWNER: **Note** This review is from earlier in the year but just getting a chance to post this now. Very important tip - when they are doing the initial damage assessment at pickup, make sure they assess the damage on the INTERIOR as well as the exterior. The gentleman that filled out our paper work only made note of exterior damage, when we asked about the interior they told us we wouldn't be responsible. When we got in the car we noticed the speakers were missing, the soft top roof was damaged, ripped seats, and MANY other things. He once again assured us that we would not be responsible for this. Well, when it came time to return the car, the manager was there and she was the one who processed our return. She examined the interior of the car and tried to blame us for the damaged roof. She told us that it wasn't on the initial damage report so therefore we're responsible. I had a bad feeling about this place from the beginning and we had no protection because it was never accounted for in the initial sign out. She was so RUDE and said she would be investigating us and charging our card for all damages. I was on the verge of tears and we almost missed our flight arguing with her. I go to St John every year and I'm always like supporting local family businesses. We have rented from Dependable many times - all great experiences but I didn't realize there was a new owner so I feel it's important to warn anyone of this in advance if they are thinking about renting from them.
