It's right by the water with view of different boats and little bit of nightlife surrounding. The place was very busy, but we were able to get seated right away outside and thankfully, they did have the heated lamp for us. We have shared the seafood platter, which came with variety of oysters, clams, shrimp, and sashimi. Honestly, the quality of any of these were not up to par. This restaurant was a tourist trap in so many ways. Our hotel made a special reservation for us, however, the restaurant assistant manager decided to put us at a corner table facing the wall instead of the harbor view our hotel concierge requested while the majority of the restaurant was empty. My husband and I both ordered the steaks and several sides, but the food was mediocre at best. The service was just ok, not really attentive and felt more rushed. We mentioned our disappointment to the assistant manager that our concierge booked the reservation based on us getting a harbor view on our way out, his response was shrugged shoulders and he couldn't care less. We visited Oyster & Chop based on a recommendation from our hotel concierge, and the reservation was made directly through the hotel. Naturally, we arrived with high expectations. Despite the restaurant not being busy, and despite our reservation being noted as coming from the hotel, we were initially seated at one of the worst tables in the room--cramped and uncomfortable. When we politely asked for a different table, the manager reacted with visible frustration, which set an unfortunate tone. The hostess mentioned that "better tables were reserved," yet the couple ahead of us, who had no reservation, were seated at a premium table. We were eventually moved to a more reasonable spot, but the service continued to disappoint. Our server was abrupt and inattentive; we waited quite a while just to get her attention while she wandered around enjoying the view instead of checking on her tables. The food itself was mediocre. The steak, in particular, was underwhelming--I've had far better in New Zealand. What sealed the experience was the exit. I mentioned our concerns to the assistant manager with a friendly smile, and the response was essentially a dismissive "too bad." I was throughly impressed with the service in this restaurant. Everyone was very polite with friendly inviting smiles and gracious attitudes. The menu was quite limited in selection. I don't consume a lot of meat and there were few options otherwise. I did settle on an eye filet and it had an unappetizing taste to me. It was cooked properly and was the proper texture.... Just not flavorful to me. It was a VERY small filet (good for me but not necessarily for someone who is super hungry!) The mashed potatoes and macaroni & cheese were both very good. I found the prices to be quite steep for what was actually served. I also don't appreciate the tip being automatically added to a table of two when tipping is not widely accepted in New Zealand to begin with! We entered Oyster and Chop for some happy hour oysters, I ordered twenty. I ordered a nice pale ale bottle, but they didn't have any good happy hour draft beers? Weird! We had heard such great reviews and high regards for the restaurant so we made a reservation. Unfortunately, our expectations fell short as the food wasn't as fresh or tasty as it could have been. The steak tartare tasted gamey and the proportions were off, but the beer battered oysters were fantastic. Nice, light, and great batter, but the sauce was plain. Personally, my cocktail smelled like the aftertaste of dishwasher grease, it was good but the glass itself could have smelled better. We also got a steak and lamb entree. The dry aged steak was over cooked and chewy, but the lamb was perfectly cooked and medium rare (but it seems like no one in NZ messes up their lamb). The mac and cheese wasn't cheesy, just creamy. Such a great seafood dining experience! My family and I were easily overwhelmed of how many restaurants were in the area and we stumbled upon this beautiful looking restaurant. We were greeted without there being any wait (it was a bit during the later dinner hours) and tended to by a super friendly waiter, who also proved to be a great photographer haha. After taking a look at all the restaurants available with a nice view of the water, we decided to give Oyster and Chop a try. Dang we were lucky we did, this candle lit dinner was fantastic! We came as a party of 4 without reservations on a Saturday night, and originally there wasn't a table for us unless we wanted to sit at the bar. But the very welcoming host/waiter said we got lucky and a table opened up just as we were about to walk away. Based on a jacket I was wearing, the waiter noticed we were visiting from Houston, Texas USA so he graciously explained their menu to us. I wish I remembered our waiter's name, but he gave us amazing service the entire dinner. Between the 4 of us, we ordered 4 entrees and 1/2 dozen oysters so we could try a little bit of everything. They were as follows: Oysters - 6 baked oysters that were topped w/ creamy Japanese mayo and togarashi crunch, solid choice but I personally would have liked them just all natural with a squeeze of lemon Fish & Chips - big serving of fish and chips served w/ fresh lemon and homemade tartar sauce, the fish had a crunchy exterior with a perfectly flaky interior, fries were just as they should be and well seasoned Scallops - seared to perfection and beautifully presented, served with this salad throughout that had a tasty vinaigrette of sorts Shrimp & Grits - another beautifully presented dish consisting of creamy grits and slightly spicy shrimp, there seemed to be pieces of house cured bacon throughout as well that added a lot of smokey flavor Gnocchi - by far the BEST dish of the dinner! Elegantly presented pillows of gnocchi that was covered in this velvety smooth sun dried tomato cream sauce. There was a slight smokey flavor to this dish that was delightful, and it had big pieces of oyster mushrooms throughout that was full of umami. The big shavings of parmesan cheese on top was the perfect garnish that slowly melted into the sauce. Overall this candle lit dinner at Oyster and Chop was well executed! The service was top notch because our waiter was extremely friendly, and he really took the time to get to know us a little. The clean white linens and beautiful view of the water gave the restaurant a glowing ambiance as well. He had a dozen oysters which he said tasted fresh and were good. I'm not an oyster fan so I didn't try it. They give you a complimentary sauce of your choosing. There's about 6 different options. I went with peppercorn which was okay. The mashed potatoes was rather bland. They were both excellent, but the oysters were the best! I love poached oysters because it really brings out the flavor of them. Horrible place for many reasons. Staff not look happy and did not stop to check on us. Second ordered an old fashion and asked for specific Irish whiskey. Was told they don't have the ingredients to make an old-fashioned from scratch. They only make it in batch modes. So they don't have bartenders they have "pourers". Attracted to this place walking by and seeing a delicious looking menu out front we knew it was a must try. 5 star all around for food taste and quality, views, service and prices. Added bonus for anyone interested in paying with Bitcoin, this is the first place I have ever seen a sign that they accept payment with that cryptocurrency anywhere in the world. Good to know for anyone interested...minimum check amount must be $150NZ so plan accordingly. :) We had a fabulous meal. The two things I absolutely wanted to eat in my NZ trip was oysters and lamb. Getting lamb was pretty easy - any type of cuisine (Indian, Thai, Chinese, Turkish, American, etc...) always had some form of lamb option and for the most part, it wasn't gamey and quite tasty. Oysters, on the other hand, were a little harder to come by at a reasonable price point. We were fortunately in bluff oyster season (March) in NZ and apparently it is a huge thing there. We didn't have an opportunity to get any while in South Island (Bluff is at the tip of South Island) so we tried to hunt for some in North Island. There's a lot of mom-n-pop shops that does seafood but unfortunately, a lot of them don't take credit card. We were so lazy to exchange for NZ cash since our credit card just worked for most places. I started to get confused because at one mom n pop place, the lady working at the counter was just pulling already shucked Bluff oysters out of a plastic container. That to me is not the oysters I had in mind. Luckily I had checked out Zomato (this may be the local NZ Yelp...Yelp has not quite hit critical mass in NZ and I had to get a lot of assist from Tripadvisor for restaurant choices) and I stumbled upon this place for Bluff oysters on the half shell for cheap. For the month of March - from 4-7pm daily in their bar area: 2NZ Bluff Oysters!! The restaurant is typical of your wharf front restaurant - more upscale than casual with a lovely view from their bar. We gorged ourselves with 2 dozens perfectly shucked Bluff oysters and it was SO GOOD. This is why Bluff oysters are world famous - not briney at all and no stomachache the next day! I would've made multiple trips back for these tasty oysters but alas, we discovered this place at the end of our trip. read more

I'd say my favorite was the steak fries! I'm only giving this place a two star base on the quality and taste of the food we ordered (raw oysters, calamari, and steak fries). The moment I took one bite into the oyster, it was so fishy and disgusting. Not what I was expecting and I was glad we ordered only half a dozen. It was probably one of the worst tasting raw oyster I've ever had. On top of that, the calamari was too salty for our taste. Also, if your are eating out on boxing day (the day after Christmas) many places were charging a 15% surcharge. I guess it may be normal in New Zealand, but I thought that was just weird. read more
