Service was fast maybe because I was a single. It was busy. It has a look of the old style steakhouse with wooden paneled walls booths.The sides were limited and I had the "potato log" thing. A steak without a baked potato as a choice is just wrong. I got the Aged Specialty Sirloin $44. It was cooked to my liking on the inside but medium/medium rare but no crust on the outside. Seasoned fare, nothing special. I couldn't believe the gristle wasn't trimmed before cooking. Maybe so the size and weight would look bigger. I have had much better at Chili's. I haven't had a good steak since I moved to Australia from the US, and others have said the same. Their cuts seem to be full of gristle, even all the Spencer Steaks (Ribeyes). I expected on New York, but not on ribeyes or sirloins. I told them my review and they were very apologetic. They called the gristle fat, I like fat, you can eat fat. The offered a Ribeye The Ribeye came medium rare. I instantly could smell teriyaki. It was tender and flavorful no gristle. I do wish it did not have the flavor teriyaki though. The bluff oysters are so good, we are so lucky that we are here at the right time, because it is only available from February to April. The oyters are fat, big, and delicious, so tasty! They are from the southern most point of New Zealand, really good!!! The mussels are sooo big, they are Mussles on steroids!!! The sauce is so good, garlic, tasty! Must try!!! The lamb rack is great with cream sauce! We got it medium. The fries and salad that came with it was good too. The service was iffy. The waiter didn't know details about the cut of meats for steak and difference in preparation. Didn't know details about the beers on the menu. Forrest to be ring us water as we asked. The beer on menu was stating 500ml bottles, but they only had 300ml because they 'ran out of 500ml' and im not sure re adjustment t on the bill wouldve been made if we didn't t note it. The food was ok. But jussi ok. Nothing to justify $$$$ in my opinion. The fish of the day in fish and chips had more batterr than fish. The fries were not crispy. The steak was just ok. This is the best steaks we've had since traveling through Australia & NZ! Good quality steaks and cooked perfectly! We had the fillet Provençal & the angus fillet with anchovy butter, both were absolutely delicious. But we were especially blown away by the anchovy butter! We also had the Camembert cheese to share, also goodWe were also impressed by the decor of the restaurant, very old times era feel. The staff were also great, our server was very attentive and prompt. I would recommend coming here! Great steaks for a good price! I would not eat here. The food was sub par at best. The service was ok - somewhat on the slow side. I don't recommend it.

Sadly I can not recommend this place for dinner. I ordered the big t-bone, medium rare, and it was one of the worst steaks I've ever had. 1/3 gristle and the rest was tough and chewy. The salad dressing tasted like it was poured from a jar. The seafood platter didn't look great but our friend seemed to enjoy it. The rack of lamb looked and tasted much better than the steak. To be fair, the waiter did recommend the lamp when I asked him 'beef or lamb', maybe he knew something. The wait staff was very pleasant and helpful, don't want to take anything away from them. Just stay away from the t-bone and salad. The French fries were really good though so I didn't starve. read more

I recently stayed in Auckland for about a week and tried many of the upscale restaurants, unfortunately most disappointed. The funny thing was, the Lord Nelson was only a few minutes from our hotel in Auckland... on our last night we tried it and it blew away the fancy upscale places in the city. I thoroughly enjoyed our entire meal at this restaurant. We had the green lipped New Zealand mussels, a great steak, rack of lamb, everything was outstanding. My steak was perfectly cooked and seasoned/sauced (caper sauce). I actually enjoyed the older, sailing ship decor... very old school. We ordered a bottle of wine, "Man of War" Dreadnought Syrah that was top notch and very reasonably priced for a restaurant. Next time I go back to Auckland, Tony's Lord Nelson will be my first restaurant to visit. read more

I had the angus filet with wild mushroom sauce and it came with sides of potato croquette and salad. You have the choice of fries and vegetables as well. For the price of $38, this was a very good piece of steak. I got it cooked to medium rare, so it was still tender. My dining companions got the angus filet with anchovies butter, and that was really good. The pairing of the butter and beef, enhanced the taste of the beef. Another friend got the ox fillet with mushroom sauce, which was really good too. Most dishes are priced at $38, and it was a good portion of food. Our party ordered three different steaks (a Hawaiian, the steak napoleon, and one more I can't recall) and all three were delicious. The serving size of the meat was just right and the vegetable and potato sides were also quite delicious. Prices were spot on, too. The Lord Nelson is a good place if you'd like some steak in Auckland. The atmosphere is a bit dark, but I think we'd call it "full of character" and "vintage", if it makes you feel any better :) read more

Visiting Auckland and this was right down the street from our hotel. Both Yelp and trip advisor had good reviews so we decided to try it. Started with a garlic bread, quite nice and hot. Ordered the reef and beef which was grilled shrimp over a medium well steak. Steak was tasty, tender and appropriately cooked. It came with a salad with house dressing and a mash potato croquette. During a day visit to Auckland by cruise ship we had the most delicious meal at this restaurant. My Venison steak wrapped in Bacon was out of this world with the most wonderful sauce (although there was a cocktail type stick stuck in it that the waitress had to inform the chef of). Richard's Lamb chops were superb. This is decorated for the period of Lord Nelson but reminded me of 1970s style London Fondue restaurants that one might see on the TV show 'The Sweeney'. So, another steakhouse with the word "Tony" in the name. I starting to suspect some sort of Tony conspiracy to slowly populate the restaurants of Auckland with good old fashioned steakhouses. Lord Nelson's is somewhere that I had walked past for years and was always slightly curious about. It's faux-brick facade and stained glass window present a slightly forbidding face to the world because you can't see inside; if you could, you would see a world of brown and a surprisingly large dining area. I was so pleased when a night out on the free wines ended up with dinner here. It's cosy and warm here, and the meals are mostly straight from a high quality restaurant in 1986: shrimp cocktail, spagehtti bolognese, and many steaks, many of these dishes served with chips and salad. Fantastic food and outstanding service. Seriously, fantastic service. The place is easy to miss but very much worth looking for. The interior is aged and decorated to resemble and old ship of sorts.
