This place was super cute and had high ratings so we went while we were in town for the day. The special was a grilled cheese and lasagna soup. I wanted the wrap and asked if I could have the lasagna soup too. Wrap was really good and i got a side of ranch. Lasagna soup was a little thick but still good. Great local place in an old train depot (hence the name) that has fantastic pie, micro draft beer on tap (their own line) and consistently good food at reasonable prices. My parents had brunch here and loved the food, the service, and mostly the ambiance. Mom had the eggs Benedict and dad had an omelet. It has a retro train depot vibe (hence the name) beautifully restored and so much to look at. Fast forward to mom and I having lunch here and the food was mediocre. We had the southwest burger and it was just ok. The fries were old and cold. The beer (they brew their own) was really good. The people were friendly. A mixed review.... Mom and I ate here today and what a mistake that was. Ordered a tenderloin as the waitress said it's thicker and not paper thin. Well she was wrong as it was thinner then a pancake and over cooked. Wanted a fish but I guess the owner changed it from a nice sized one to a little square one like what they have at McDonald's. Used to be a nice sized one the last time I was there. So I got the hamburger. A very greasy hamburger where I had to run to the bathroom twice after eating it. Thank goodness mom liked what she got but my family will not be back. We were fighting flies the whole time we were trying to eat and had to look at the thick dust on the shelves and clutter they have sitting around. The best food I ate in quite awhile. The prices were more than reasonable. I had the French dip sandwich and fries. What a wonderful taste. My wife had the club sandwich. She had a diet pepsi and I had water. The total cost was a little over $13.00 that was amazing!! For breakfast we both had a pop and a breakfast burritto. Wow that burritto was hugh and chocked full. It was so delicious we both ate every bite. The price was under $16.00. They both weighed at least 2lbs each. The staff was naturally friendly. We had a great time eating there. I was driving through Iowa and needed to stop and eat before my final destination. I hadn't been here since a Thanksgiving back in college. My mom had a hankering for a hot roast beef and I for a pork tenderloin. Both hit the spot. We also got the home brewed root beer and cream soda. I am not a fan of cream soda so I won't comment on it. The root beer was fine but tasted as though it was a mix of a half root beer and half a stout. I'm the true big city girl who at first glance when driving into Shenandoah for a 2 night work stay instantly stressed a little over the lack of internet and places to eat. It only took one bite of this chicken salad sandwich, which is made just like my Grandmothers would make my whole childhood, to make me realize that although the choices are limited the food is amazing. I hit up the Depot Deli for breakfast before shooting a wedding in Shenandoah. If you're looking for a cheap no-fuss breakfast in a cool spot with history, give Depot Deli a try. I ordered an omelette with toast ($3.25) and coffee ($1). I requested an egg white omelette, and though my server was hesitant at first, she said "They [the cooks] don't normally like to do this, but I'll see what I can do." My request was granted, and I was served up one yummy egg white omelette with cheddar cheese. She kept the coffee coming, too. The one big distraction was the family of one of the employees. They were at a table in the main dining area, loud in their play and chat (albeit having a good time). Other than the noise, the idea of this place is great. The layout is unique, open in some parts yet tucked away in others, and the overall vibe is cool. There isn't a shortage of memorabilia to admire, and I dug the wood booths. This is definitely a fun place to go with friends, and I can tell many who visit are regulars. You can't beat the prices, and my server was incredibly attentive. The ice tea is perfect; cobb salad, prime rib dinner, prime rib sandwich, fries, roast beef with mashed potatoes provided great comfort food. The wait staff was friendly and glad we were there. I really was debating about wether to make this post or not. But here it goes we went in tonight and I ordered the tilapia like I have done the past 8 Saturdays now granted last Saturday was not the best but it was way better than tonight. When we were finished it was oblivious that I had only taken a bite out of it and had my partner try it also so 2 bites missing from the fish. I asked our waitress if there was anyway we could swap it for salmon or do a voucher for it for next time I had no issues with paying for it just asked there was something that could be done. We were advised that they don't do that and there was, nothing that could be done. So we paid and left. Good place to eat. Walking distance from my hotel. Beer is served with a frosted glass, which after a hard working outside tastes great. Nice menu selections, typical pub food. They also serve breakfast. Ample room inside, the only thing weird in town is the few places I have stopped at the sinks in the restrooms are tiny. I can't explain it. First off, The Depot has such an interesting history and setting. Antiques and oddities are hung over every inch of the walls. It is a great environment! The Depot has hands down the best cheese balls (fried cheese curds) in the world!! Their mini mozzarella sticks are also delicious. They have a really tasty iowa style fried tenderloin sandwich. Their patty melt burger is one of my all time favorites! The hot beef sandwich is also a favorite. Each night is a different special and they are comfort food grandmas style cookin'. I love going to the depot! I eat here about 2 or 3 times a month. I have a lot of positives about their food, they have a wide variety of choices for whatever food mood your in. The food looks appetizing and always well put together. My only downside is the time it takes to get your food. I have an hour lunch when working and I wouldn't be able eat here during that time. If time isn't and issue it's definitely a good place to check out. The cheese balls and tangy house dip are highly recommended. Stopped in here while in town for the marathon. Our waitress Crissy was super nice and a great waitress. Ate dinner and I had the Mexican plate which was just OK. They brew their own beers and I have to say the beer was also just ok. There aren't a lot of places in town to eat so we stopped back the next day. Not only is the owner a hands-on business owner, restaurant manager and spirited community supporter, Bill Hillman is an active supporter of Live Music and the artists who make it! Mr Hillman brought the Everly Brothers back home for a daylong celebration, capped by a rain shortened street dance featuring the Everly Brothers and a world class back up band. Bill continues to be active, not only booking live music, but as a member of the nominating committee for the Iowa Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. Anne and I stopped in today and had Homemade Soft Tacos and they were excellent! You could spend an entire day here just looking at pictures of Shenandoah history, from the days when the nurseries of Henry Fields and Earl May featured live entertainers on Radio stations KFNF and KMA, to the present.
