What an odd experience. The shop is lovely and the restaurant's servingware is truly joyful and tasteful. The place was packed, so we hoped we had found some good food. Instead, we got service with a sneer. We have a suspicion that we were treated poorly because we look different from everybody else there. If that had been the case and their food was good, I wouldn't have left a review. It wasn't. The enchiladas were the better item. They and the rice were dry. The entire plate was flavorless, but edible and filling. It wasn't worth the cost. The French Dip was the most poorly executed example of that sandwich we had ever seen. The beef was simply packaged deli beef and was in no way prepared with any of the seasonings a French Dip should have. The au jus was similarly an unprepared beef broth, which lacked even salt. We're pretty sure the cheese was American-style single slice Swiss because it fully melted. The bread was excellent, but wasted on such a poorly prepared sandwich. At no point did anybody ask how our meal was and we felt like we were rushed out. They have no vegetarian options for those who might care. If you're in town for an art walk or something, skip this place.
If you're looking for a great spacious environment that serves up delicious food for lunch, this is it. The building itself is so charming and the food is simple, but very fresh and flavorful. My husband ordered the French dip and I had the crispy chicken sandwich... both so good! The desserts were rich and delectable. I got the bread pudding and my husband the molten chocolate cake. We loved everything!
Service was really bizarre, they seemed not to want me there. However, I can forgive that if the food were spectacular. I do appreciate the limited menu. I expected everything to be local (it is farm country) and excellent (given the review on here). There were two pizzas on the menu and two sandwiches. I had just been on a hike, so I selected the BBQ chicken pizza. It came out and looked like it had been cooked in a toaster oven. The ingredients were slightly cool: chicken, bbq sauce, red onions (hardly cooked), and cheddar cheese. Not enough to send it back but nothing remarkable. The store was a hodgepodge of seasonal decorations, with most things emblazoned with some trite platitude about "home." Some of the antiques used as displays were nice, but the upstairs was like a bad garage sale.
I spent my teenage years in Nebraska City, and there was nothing like the Keeping Room there when I was growing up. The food at the Keeping Room is unique in the area, inventive and tasty. I had three lunches there during my visit (I probably would have gone back again if I could have), and each time I was served a great meal. Probably my favorite was a large lavash cracker with grilled cherry tomato halves, mozzarella cheese, basil, and a balsamic vinegar drizzle. It was delicious, beautiful, and fresh, but also satisfying. And their more traditional desserts are super. The bread pudding is especially delicious, if that's your thing... if not, the pies are superb. The service is solid, friendly in a no-nonsense kind of way, and completely efficient. Generous with the tea and coffee as well. Make it a special lunch!
Quaint establishment, very comfortable. Several reviews commented on the food but my trip led to some outstanding Apple Sangria along with their apple pie ala mode. OMG if you're in Nebraska City put this establishment on your list.
What a cute downtown cafe. I enjoyed shopping in the store and walked away with about 5 new things for my house and gifts for my kids after eating lunch. I had the power Greek salad with crab cake and it was delicious!

This restaurant is a real gem. I am thrilled that my sister recommended we stop here for lunch yesterday. The greeting was warm and friendly from Robyn our server. The soup yesterday was a (sweet potato chowder) with big chunks of perfectly cooked sweet potato surrounded by home grown sweet corn, celery and sausage. It was fantastic. I had the chicken salad sandwich, my wife and very nice salad and my sister had the Thai wrap. All were amazing,. This wonderful spot has incredible desserts as well with very generous portions. The carrot cake and homemade vanilla ice cream was off the charts. Easy street parking make it easy and very much worth driving 50 miles to experience. We will plan on coming through Nebraska City at lunch time so that we can return soon I hope. read more

What a charming downtown cafe complete with exposed brick, delicious food, and that "welcoming small-town feel" staff! Sandwiches, salads, soup, drinks, & desserts. Try the Asian salad with house-made dressing or the Thai flatbread. Don't forget the apple sangria! With the cinnamon sugar rim you'll think you're eating apple pie. Yummmm! Beautiful store - very well merchandised. Each room was a lovely vignette with thoughtful product placement. Fantastic apparel assortment upstairs. Seating in the dining area was spaced nicely and all employees wore masks. We are from out of town, at Lied Lodge for the weekend. We could've walked around in the store side for over an hour but had another appointment in the afternoon. I only wish they had espresso/coffee drinks. Scooters was the only place in town we could find with espresso in the menu and unfortunately they're heavy with the syrup pumps. Ha! Nonetheless, thank you! read more

They serve the best chicken salad sandwich! The ginger peach tea was great as well. It is not only a restaurant but also a boutique that provides great stuff. I live in Lincoln but I will definitely go back to Nebraska City just for this great retaurant. read more

We had salads and everyone enjoyed their food. I especially liked the the Roquefort Pear salad. The dressing was the perfect balance of sweet and tart. read more

Homemade chili was amazing along with the chicken salad sandwich. Comfortable tea room environment with friendly staff and healthy portions. Highly recommended! Also has a cute gift shop that my wife loved! read more

My fiancé and I stopped by here for lunch. He had the muffuletta and I had the pear salad. I didn't try his sandwich but it looked tasty. My salad was amazingly good and fresh. Our waitress was prompt and polite. I definitely recommend eating at this spot! read more
