I've waited 9 months to make this review so I could give a clear assessment of my experience with Depot Town and not let my anger and disappointment get the best of my feedback. I love small businesses and the arts and understand the difficulties of operating a small business. The reality of small business is that sometimes things just don't work out. I'd like to share my experience with Depot Town though. After following Jon Larson for several years on social media I decided to try and book an appointment as an out of town customer in January. I work in food service and was traveling from California so because of flight prices I had to call and rebook my initial appointment, but I gave a month's notice. I spent over $800 on a non refundable flight and Airbnb for a custom tattoo appointment. A few days before my flight the shop called me (not Jon) and said he had COVID and had to cancel our Friday afternoon appointment. I totally understand being sick and would never expect anyone to go to work under the weather and exposing staff and clients. Here's the upsetting part. I found out on social media that it was his birthday weekend. Hard to say if that had anything to do with the Friday afternoon cancellation but I wouldn't be surprised. Secondly, when the shop called me about the cancellation that was it. They didn't offer a deposit refund, to reschedule, or to set me up with another artist. They just said sorry. I had to track Jon down on social media to get my deposit refund. Let alone the airfare and lodging I was out at this point. I'm sure this shop is great for Michigan locals but don't book if you're from out of town, they're not equipped to handle that kind of demand. Needless to say I got the hint and didn't rebook. I hope operations practices have improved since I've last been in contact with the shop. I'm just one person and don't matter in the grand scheme of things but I urge anyone considering working with this shop to be cautious of their unprofessional practices. read more

I had a wonderful experience at Depot Town Tattoo! Ben was my artist, and he was great to consult with while planning the tattoo, as well as during the tattoo time. I'm kind of nervous about needles (yet I still wanted a tattoo... probably not too uncommon), but we had a great conversation while he was tattooing me, and before I knew it, I had sat the whole hour and a half and had a gorgeous tattoo! Ben will definitely be doing my future tattoos. :) I also liked that when I came in, I saw him consulting with another artist about my tattoo, and during the tattoo, another artist's "canvas" came over and showed off his tattoo to us, and they came and checked out mine while it was being done. Last Tuesday, my sister and I decided to get matching sugar skull tattoos on the back of the calf instead of buying Festivus gifts. I went up to Depot Town a week before and dropped off the inspiration photo to Mike and told him that we just liked the shape of the head and the teeth and we needed a spider, honey bees, and orchids somewhere in there. I told him, you're the artist, do what you want. So we got there early and made sure we liked the design and we didn't have to make any changes. It was gorgeous! Now, dear readers, this was my very first tattoo ever! My baby sister took me to get my first tattoo just like I took her to get her first piercing forever ago. I was scared to death until I got there, and then everything was fine! I felt very comfortable and it was easy to relax once I plopped myself down on the table. Bill did my tattoo while Mike did my sister's. It was a lovely bonding experience for my sis and I: watching each other cringe and pain while giggling about it. The shop is clean and everyone is friendly. Just don't ask Mike to allow you to listen to The Smiths while you get inked: "I hate Morrissey, that is where I draw the line." I couldn't help but laugh. I visited the shop today to get a feel for their work and the atmosphere of the environment. I had not been to Yelp first, so I was just walking in. Turns out, the customer service aspect is unfortunately true. I walked in and skimmed the various artists' albums. At that point, someone came over and asked if I needed help. I explained that I was getting an idea of the style and artist I wanted to choose. He said cool. I spent 15 minutes going thru the books carefully. I'm no tattoo novice-- I have 4-- and was considering coming in for a cover up. When I finished looking at the books, I stood up and approached the counter. The others working there weren't working on people. I stood there for a good 6 minutes. Seriously. In a regular business, approaching the counter = I need help. I had questions abt some work I had seen. Suffice to say, even after artists approached others standing near the counter, it was clear to me that this was clearly NOT the place for me. I have no problem with shelling out good money for good work. But not for poor service. read more

Depot Town Tattoo is a new business but its two primary artists are well-established. Dawn Cooke and Mike Emmett, both veterans of Jeff Zuck's "Name Brand" studio in Ann Arbor, have credibility. Dawn's known for her Japanese, Mike for his American, and either of them will tattoo you expertly. The upside to the shop is that they do great work. There are now several artists in addition to the two founders. The downside to the shop is customer service. Rarely does anyone answer the phone, and they've never returned any of my phone calls or emails, hence the 3-star instead of 4-star rating. Walk-ins can be ignored for a few minutes because the artists hang out in the office with loud music on. For some, this is part of the atmosphere of a tattoo parlour, but to me it's aloof and borderline disrespectful not to return calls or e-mail. There's ample free parking in Depot Town and the shop is clean and comfortable. I didn't see any thing other than the waiting area and the main (open) tattooing floor, but the windows are tinted so privacy isn't an issue. Bottom line: Probably hosts the best tattoo artists in Ypsilanti, but with Spiral a few miles away and Name Brand and Lucky Monkey in Downtown Ann Arbor, this shop isn't yet one of the big dogs in the area. read more

Awesome tattoo shop! I just got a tattoo done by Jon Larson who does AMAZING work! Very clean and spacious shop, and everyone that was working there is very nice. I had to wait a little while because Jon was running behind, but two other artists asked if I needed/was already being helped. They have a big open area where they do tattoos, but also have private rooms in the back I noticed. Very reasonably priced too. Other places were trying to overcharge me for what I wanted. I feel a lot of places try to over charge you, but not here! Hoping to get another one in late summer/early fall. Can't wait to go back! read more

This time I took my daughter to get her first tattoo for her 21st birthday! We decided to get matching tattoos. We brought in our own design and CJ recommend a few small changes. After he made a few small tweaks the finished design was perfect! He listened to what we wanted and nailed it. The place was clean. His work station was clean & sterile. The atmosphere was great! Dawn Cooke, of Depot Town Tattoo, is a nationally recognized, outstanding tattoo artist, with lots of years of experience, despite her young good looking age! I have an arm sleeve, a leg sleeve, and two other arm tattoos from her that are spectacular. i get stopped three times a day at least by people oohing and aahing over my tattoos. I keep a whole pack of her cards to give out to these people and a bunch of my friends drive 75 miles to get tattoos from her because of my work. This woman rocks! I've been seeing Dawn for my tattoos since 2008, and followed her from her old shop location in Ann Arbor to Depot Town. She runs this shop smoothly, professionally, with immaculate attention to detail, while always retaining the shops "cool" ambiance. At this point she's done over 14 hours of work on me, and I commute to the shop from Chicago because she's worth it. Here are my "key points" reviews of the shop: Safety & Cleanliness: #1 priority. They are extremely transparent about their processes, religious about autoclave checks, and extremely clean. Even my OCD, anti-tattoo, doctor father would approve. I work in public health, very rigorous about my safety during body mods, and they do everything by the books- and beyond. Tattoo Art: All of the artists are genius. They are all truly artists that work with client's skin as a canvas for something unique and special. I see Dawn because I really like her style, but I've had some work done by a visiting artist and it is also amazing. Dawn did an amazingly beautiful cover up on me (I went to a shop in kzoo.. bad idea) and it's so effective, you can't even tell it's a cover up. Customer Service: I have never had an issue getting through on the phone. All small businesses have their challenges, luckily for us Depot Town staff answer their own phones, instead of outsourcing to some call center. Sometimes there isn't somebody near the phone to answer, I have a simple solution to that: call back later. Any time I've called with questions, a concern, anything, I've gotten prompt, accurate answers. I'm sure I could keep going for a few pages about just how great Depot Town is, but eventually people stop reading these yelp reviews so I will leave it at that. Worth the travel, money, and time- if it's going to be on your body for the rest of your life, don't settle for anything less than the best- and these guys are the Real Deal. read more

Jon Larson is amazing. If you like tattoos and have not seen Jon yet, you are completely missing out. His ability to grasp the visions you have floating around your mind, and translate them into a reality, is exceptional. In fact, he takes your idea, processes it through his magnificently magical brain, and creates something that's approximately 1,000,000,000 times cooler than what you imagined. Somehow he does this in a way that seems effortless for him. This is probably because he's a gifted human being and a gifted artist. He works swiftly, is neat, very gentle despite holding a tattoo gun, is so courteous, ridiculously smart, totally hilarious, super nice, and is a solid human being from top to bottom (figuratively & literally). The type of person that could have an enormous ego bc he's so crazy talented, yet he's down to earth and grounded. His style, use of color, depth and space, are just some of the traits that indicate he's an innovator within his field. And he's consistent! I have 10 from Jon (and more on the way) and they are all supremely amazing. ALL!! If you have tattoos, you know that the experience matters. He makes for a great experience 100% of the time. The whole shop does! From the front desk to the various artists working, everyone there rules. The talent here is truly phenomenal in every sense of the word, and you should really do yourself a favor by going in. You will be so so so stinking happy you did. CJ designed a beautiful piece of art based on the photos I sent him, helped advise me on the best color and placement, and treated me gently, respectfully, and professionally. He did beautiful work very quickly and was friendly and fun to talk with. My tattoo healed easily and in record time, I love the design, and I couldn't be more pleased. I've had complete strangers compliment me about it on the street saying that they thought it was beautiful despite not generally being a fan of body art. This group has a reputation, both for offering high quality work and for being professional and respectful, particularly towards women, and in my experience they definitely lived up to their reputation. In looking for a great, professional artist with a delightful track record, there is no doubt that Jon Larson at Depot Town is the man for the job. Jon is very social and has a very visible appreciation for his artwork. He's not just banging out ink for the money, he puts his effort into the work he sends his costumers out of the shop with. As for the shop, it's very clean, and laidback. Lots of things to look at around the place to keep your occupied during your session. The art style of the tattoos are really good. But just a heads up - they only accept cash transactions. However - I got a tattoo done at this place and when I got there everyone seemed to be very friendly. The receptionist was nice and the tattoo artist was nice. However, I don't even know my tattoo artists name, it was never given to me. Not only that, my tattoo had MAJOR scabbing. This wasn't my first tattoo and I know minor scabbing is ok, but it should never be anything major. Secondly I've got some blowout on my tattoo in some places which is disappointing. I had a very positive experience when I went with one of my friends to get a tattoo so when it was my turn I didn't even thing twice to go back to Depot Town. Never have I been so disappointed with customer service in my whole life. Every artist was very polite to me but the lady at the front desk was so rude. This was very hard to see because having someone that is rude to represent this business isn't going to get them very far. She kept saying so many rude things and they were strictly directed towards me because she was polite towards every other customer in the shop at that time. I didn't even end up getting the tattoo because she was so rude and I won't return because of her. read more

And my worst fear has been confirmed... Finally got the tat Alexis did looked at by another shop, and they said they can't even work with it. I'm stuck with this awful tattoo, or a half sleeve, when all I ever wanted was something small and tasteful. Even if I get the half sleeve, they want me to go through one (painful!!!) removal treatment first, since it's "as black as black gets". Great! I have a friend who saw Alexis after I did, and although she likes her tattoo, she felt pressure to go larger than what she was comfortable with too, so that seems to be a trend with her (probably due to inexperience - I'm sure bigger is easier). Think before you ink people! I'll regret that day for a long time to come! read more

Horrible customer service. Initial appointment was rushed, Mike was unfriendly at best. Missed an appointment today, and was told off by Mike without being able to explain. If they bothered answering the phone they'd know that I had strep and couldn't make it. I would not recommend this place to anyone. read more

He refused to do it the way/color I wanted, and then right before he started doing it told me "If I were doing my tattoo like that it would look f*cking stupid". He didn't even take his time.
