Nice market yard with amazing cafes and a street market every Saturday! Try the Dirty Apron (good coffee and good service)!

It was foodie time at Borough Market on Tuesday (our last full day in London), and it was foodie…read moreheaven for me and my family. We enjoyed walking around and seeing a wide variety of food options! The whole market area was clean and organized when we got there at 9am. No lines yet. Long lines did start forming around 9:45am when the hot foods were ready but moved pretty quickly. We tried: * The Ginger Pig - Traditional Sausage Roll * Wild Mushroom Risotto - Spelt Risotto with Truffle Shavings * Turnips Greengrocer - Chocolate Covered Strawberries * The Black Pig - The Best One With Crackling * Turkish Deli - Turkish Delight & Turkish Coffee * Bread Ahead - Crème Brûlée Donut

It is a farmer's type market with some prepared foods, which were top notch. We walked the entire thing and grabbed as much as we could to eat. There are plenty of food places just outside the space that are open later as well. I got some meat sticks from a vendor, sort of farmers market style. There was also another stand that had fruit in a cup with chocolate. Our best deal were some arepas that were half off because it was closing time and they wanted to get rid of them. This isn't the place to take pictures, but rather to immerse yourself in all the goodness that is here.

My life in London was not complete until I discovered East street. Now, I go there every Saturday…read moreand buy as much food as I can carry. Three kilos of carrots for one pound? Ten pink lady apples for one pound? A plethora of green beans for 100 pounds... haha no ONE POUND! It's just amazing. I can hardly contain myself every time I go. Besides the cheap produce, there's snacks, cereal, clothes, makeup, small electronics, CDs, stationary, shoes, dishware, it's like a one man band - East Street does it all. Also, it's a real local kind of place - no tourists here, just people going about their weekend shopping. And, I feel all down-home, banjo-strumming good when I go there. It's not exactly a wealthy part of town though (read - not at all) so if that doesn't speak to you, stick to Borough market, but I think East Street is a winner. And, all the workers in the stands are friendly. They call me 'love' and darlin' and 'sweetheart.' and it tickles me delighted, like overpriced Elmo dolls. Final grade? A+.

A whole bucket of garlic for £2, 10 red onions for a pound, a whole bag of vine tomatoes also for a pound...the list goes on and on. It makes you feel stupid that you've been paying more than double the price in a supermarket for god knows how many years. And of course it has all the ethical plus points too - less or no packaging and supportive of the local community. Make sure to shop around as prices, quantities and quality vary from stall to stall, but in general it's all excellent. The market caters mostly for the locals so don't, by any means, expect a Borough market experience - there are no posh modern delis here - just simple local no frills produce. The perfect place for credit crunch shopping!

So so for example, you won't get meats like Game from March to mid August or English tomatoes in mid December. What you will get is 'just-picked' fruit and veg super fresh from the farm and according to season. The bread is made locally from organic ingredients where possible. Cakes are also locally made and delicious. Little of the food is imported (with the exception of the chocolate that graces some of the cakes I guess!) so food miles are low and quality high. Stall holders are friendly and knowledgeable, happy to provide samples and offer tips on dishes and ingredient combinations that make for perfect meals. The farmer's market's take place every third Saturday of the month; most recently on 16th August 2008. Get down there between 10 am and 3pm. UPDATE 22/07/09 A fish stall now regularly makes the trek from Essex (Maldon) which just about completes the loveliness of it all. There is also an excellent stall selling marinated olives, marinated garlic (which is delicious BTW), artichoke hearts and more.

Lovely market with plenty of fresh produce, hot food and crafts. It's worth visiting on Saturdays.read more
