One of my favourite weekend destinations! It shows how cosmopolitan food scene in London is. Here one can dive into food culture of any continent! When visiting with friends we usually take some familiar meals and something totally new to try. Visitors and staff are really friendly and welcoming. Definitely will visit again as there are so many meals left to try!

I was not a big fan of this market as far the vintage, hand-made, mass produced items, clothes, etc. (I liked the Portobello Market a lot better). However, the food is another story. After a night of drinking, we were famished. Fellow Yelper (Katherine B) summed it up very well when she indicated they have "Bubbling vats of any world cuisine you could imagine." It is a street-food like environment similar to Brick Lane but located within a building. They have Venezuelan, Ethiopian, Tibet, Japanese, Thai, Vegan, etc. We really liked the Ethiopian veg/vegan food from the Ethiopiques stand as well as the Arepas stand. I definitely ate too much food, I couldn't help myself. I would recommend checking out the Sunday UpMarket..... at least for the food. It is a fun place to eat.

The first time I came to London as an adult, a London friend took me here and i thought it was the bees knees. There was nothing even close to this market in Madrid at the time, there probably still isn't. When I come now, there are still s few things that I really enjoy and it's grown a lot since, taking over all sorts of buildings. Besides the food court, which is always fun and full of varied, low cost options. I recently went into the building opposite and found a bunch of interesting shops stalls. From antiques, to records for £1 to handmade handbags and jewellery. The antiques were about over priced in my bc they can probably get away with it with the hype of the market. However, there were all kinds of independent businesses that's had really special stuff like handmade handbags, jewellery, etc. Definitely worth checking out!

Sunday UpMarket is the slightly less high profile equivalent of heaving Spitalfields Market; similarly taking place every Sunday but instead housed within the historic Truman Brewery. Will stall-holders selling fashion and accessories and art and with a lively area packed full of food stalls, Sunday UpMarket is definitely worth a visit when walking from Spitalfields to Brick Lane on a leisurely Sunday. My prize finds from Sunday UpMarket include a vintage Leonard Paris silk dress for £12, original eighties Ray Ban Wayfarers for £20 and too much vintage costume jewellery to mention.

The Sunday UpMarket is a hodgepodge of many stands that show not only the variety of food and goods, but also the mixture of cultures. On Brick Lane in London, the Sunday UpMarket is located inside the Old Truman Brewery. The market is made up of two halves. One half offers visitors fashion, crafts, knick knacks, goods and other bits and bobs. The second half is made up of the UpMarket's famous food market. It is a variety cuisine stalls with influences from Morocco, India, Japan, Thai, Spain, Turkey, the Caribbean and more. The UpMarket gives the designers and food vendors the ability to sell their goods directly to the customers. Walking into the UpMarket you immediately get a whiff of the different delicious cuisines it has to offer. There are many affordable options to choose from. My visit to the Sunday UpMarket was very short since I was strapped for time for my afternoon flight to Edinburgh, Scotland. I only had enough time to get a quick walk around the food section to grab a quick bite. The stall that intrigued me the most was a Turkish and Indian fusion cuisine called Roti Roll. Roti Roll offers many selections from hummus, kabobs, roti wraps and etc. One of the choices offered is a £5 dish that gave a variety of the cuisine fusion: one choice of curried halal meat (lamb, chicken, beef or vegetarian option) with various heat levels, a salad, chickpeas, masala potato, rice, colorful cumin flavored poppadum chips and pickled vegetables of various heat levels to help yourself to on the side. I decided to choose the mild lamb sheikh kebab for the £5 dish combination plate. The lamb was robust in flavor and well balanced with cumin and other spices. The rice was flavored with coriander, cardamom and think cut carrots with a medium heat level and complexity to the dish. I found the dish very flavorful with contrasting heat levels of all of the components of the dish. The meat, rice, red pickled vegetables and onions sauce gave off heat while the masala potato and chickpeas gave a cooling sensation to balance out the meal. The salad on top brought a crisp freshness to the dish with the chopped greens, crumbed cheese, salty marinated olives and creamy cool yogurt sauce. This dish is large enough that two people can share easily.

Come here for food-- FOOD FOOD FOOD! Again, empty your stomach and get ready for some major food binge. It's like the greatest food market you can get in London (c'mon, we don't have as great of a food culture here). It's an all around the world food cuisine fun fair; from Malaysian to Moroccan, Japanese to Ethiopian, Mexican to Thai, Indian, Mediterranean, Chinese... the list goes on. Food cooked fresh in front of you. YUMDY DUM DUMS! Shopping is alright, meh, does get pricey. They carry some vintage stuff along with some cheap/ medium priced jewelries and home made designs. It's the east, bare with them hipsters. Do bring your touristy friends here, they'll love it.

The Sunday Upmarket on Brick Lane is so much fun to walk through. Its the kind of stalls filled with random and cool designs that makes window shopping so much fun. But you still get the bustling and more intimate feel of an open market, and can chat with the designers who often make the work themselves. But its not the shopping I come here for! Its definitely the food. Some of the best lunches to be found in the area on the weekend are here. Its less expensive than Spittalfields nearby, and made by local families. There is a range of stuff on offer, but I love the Ethiopian wrap made with layers of lentil, veg and sour bread. Yum. I went here by myself one day, and started chatting to the family who runs the stall. We ended up drinking lovely Ethiopian coffee and chatting for almost an hour. Its always fun, even on a rainy Sunday!

When you're out on a Sunday jaunt and feeling a bit peckish and fancy a melange of flavour for your sozzled, overworked tongue, run past the Cafe 1001 BBQ (it's only for clueless tourists), don't be wooed by coffee shops lambasting you with organic, hand reared fluffy animals. No, no get your lazy ass the right side of the Truman Brewery and jump into the Sunday (Up) Market pushing past cool seeking teens and junkies adorning the pavements/bins. There are soooo many diverse food stalls here I can't really give you an overview of the good, the bad and the ugly so please see my blog for a lowdown on what to sample. I'm three pounds heavier after my Sunday excursion so this should give you an indication of my culinary stall experimentation. Plus, it's good for idle romance and your partner will be excited if you can navigate your way through the maze successfully. This market (car park throughout the week) also sprawls a myriad mess of independent designers, bits and bobs, vintage oddities = majority tat. Top tip, to the far right hand side sits the lovely leather stall where you can pick up affordable belts, cuffs and whips, perfect for all members of the family and beyond!

Superhero Finger Puppets for A POUND! No way!

It is a farmer's type market with some prepared foods, which were top notch. We walked the entire thing and grabbed as much as we could to eat. There are plenty of food places just outside the space that are open later as well. I got some meat sticks from a vendor, sort of farmers market style. There was also another stand that had fruit in a cup with chocolate. Our best deal were some arepas that were half off because it was closing time and they wanted to get rid of them. This isn't the place to take pictures, but rather to immerse yourself in all the goodness that is here.

'Get your fruit and veg for a paaund (sic)' screams the hirsuite Asian street vendor, with a Cockney accent more authentic than Del Boy at the Dogs. Also home to a variety of phallic shaped vegetables, a random collection of children's clothes and durable hair accessories, my 50p hairbrush is still going strong caressing my thick, unruly barnet. There are probably 50 stalls in this market, some selling lingerie, others selling fish, and others focusing on the bollywood dvd scene. It's all good. For cheap produce though, you can't beat it.
