The service is A+++ (Tanya was so friendly and helpful) and the restaurant is super clean (bathrooms too) - we had the buffet of course... and it was clean and everything well prepared and tasty! Stopped at Der Dutchman for lunch with a bus tour group of more than 50 people. They were waiting for us at the agreed upon time. We were escorted to a private dining room. They had a table with a variety of drinks already poured. We just had to grab our choice and find a seat. They also had a variety of pie slices already cut and on plates. We were told to make our choice and take our pie to our seat. We were then escorted to the buffet that consisted of one line for cold food (salads) and another line for hot foods like chicken, shredded beef, shredded pork, mashed potatoes and more. After filling our plates, we returned to our dining room. There they brought out baskets of large, soft rolls. As we ate, waitresses were attentive, refilling drinks and taking away empty dishes. The food was good and there was a good variety. The facility seemed new and clean. The bathrooms were well maintained. Near the lobby was a bakery and large second floor gift shop. I do love me an Amish buffet. This one today was something special. They had several meat options with fried chicken, ham, roast beef, roast pork, and meatballs. Additionally there was a cowboy bean dish which had ground beef as a part of the recipe. I would rate today's buffet as maybe the best I've had Amish style. When I was seated it seems like I waited 5 minutes before just getting up to find the buffet. I hadn't seen a table server just as the people around me had not. They were just getting started with lunch as it was just past 11:00. As I progressed thru my servings she was more attentive. Great buffet today! read more

We were on a road trip last spring and decided to try this restaurant. There was a short wait due to the lunch rush, but it was reasonable. Once seated, the service was fantastic. This beautiful Amish shop, restaurant and bakery make what appears to be beautiful pies. However, the ingredient list looks like it is from the Dow chemical company. Worse than the many chemicals and preservatives in every pie is the use of "deodorized lard". If you are going to make a pie with pig fat, at least it should smell like a pig. What is wrong with using butter? It is probably cheaper than lard but perhaps a shorter shelf life. Yuck on pig fat. read more

This is both a buffet and a menu style restaurant. When you have had a long day on the road, you just wanna eat. The buffet was well stocked with salad bar as well as multiple meats, vegetables, and sides. If that isn't enough you can add on a slice of pie. Although, they did offer dessert at the buffet too. I didn't partake so I can't speak to that, but being Mennonite myself I can say the desserts looked legit. The service was great and they had plenty of room for dining. This is a popular place for motorcoaches apparently with the size of the restaurant. There is also a bakery and gift shop with plenty of fun finds. This is a mixed review. I had 1 good experience about 2 weeks ago and today the experience was not as good. The restaurant is under construction currently and there is no buffet. That's fine. I was not interested in the buffet. There is lots of hammering and drilling while they renovate the interior. And only half of the dining area is available to seating. Again, I get it and that's fine. I am not mad at that situation. I was seated promptly both times. 2 weeks ago at a table and today at a back booth. That's totally fine. I ordered the same thing a chef salad and cup of soup. The first time I got the chef salad I got grilled chicken. And I asked about turkey and ham, because that usually what's in a chef salad. Server told me I can get that as an option too. The chicken chef salad was good and I enjoyed it. The chicken noodle soup was good as well. Today I ordered the same. But this time the chicken noodle soup though hot was salty, I don't mind some salt but this was strong. Didn't like it. And I got the turkey and ham chef salad. But I had to pay extra for the turkey. Here is my issue. I was never told that till I got the bill. I didn't mind paying but it's all about communication. I should have been told it was extra cost. In a traditional chef salad both turkey and ham are in the salad at no extra cost. So this Der Dutchman salad is just a salad not a chef salad. Again, I just needed to be told that from the server. To be honest that just sorta pissed me off. I hate looking at the bill and getting a surprise cost when the server should have told me upfront. There it is. I have been traveling for work and right around Bellevue I am getting g hungry and stop. I think I'll wait and stop someplace else next time. read more

Since we were traveling with 4 kids we thought this would be a fun lunch idea giving them the option to choose from the buffet. The buffet consisted of salad bar, soup bar, and hot foods. The restaurant is currently under construction so the main entrance is not available. It did not interrupt our meal experience. We were served fresh rolls which were delicious. The food like any buffet was hot or miss depending on the dish. The chicken was a big hit and the salad was fresh with a nice amount of toppings. I think the croutons are homemade as well. I enjoyed that they had a couple dessert options on the buffet as well. Not sure it was work the price but fun to try the different food options. read more

First thing that came to mind when patronizing this restaurant was: A buffet with GFS food at a Super 8 Motel. Hubby and I patronized this restaurant on our way to Cleveland to visit family and I was excited about "homemade" food cooked by the Amish. However, the restaurant had very antiquated decor and the food was very bland. The rolls tasted like nursing home rolls and my bacon tasted like bulk purchased, cheap bacon. The table next to us said, "this food is bland." Three stars is for the AMAZING nice waitress we had, Shayla. She was so nice and accommodating. Also, the price was very reasonable ($40ish dollars for 2 dinners) and the food was very hot. I hope Der Dutchman brings back their traditions and homemade Amish cooked meals soon vs. prepackaged unflavored meals. read more

The only good thing about our breakfast was the waitress. She was wonderful.... We had a terrible breakfast a couple of years ago but was really hoping for an improvement like it had been several years ago. But no..... The eggs on the buffet were so dry. The kielbasa was dried out and hard. Very few choices for as much as it costs. Even a breakfast casserole would have been nice because that would have held the moisture in the eggs. You can also add cream cheese to the eggs to help moisture. The honeydew was also sour. Cantaloupe was good. We tried dinner there a few weeks ago and it was not like it used to be. I stopped by for a second time last week. Place looked clean & nice. Restroom was up to par. Service was good. I wasn't as impressed with the food this time. The roast pork & beef were decent,the fish (it was Friday) was meh and the noodles were baby food soft. Last time they had two flavors of noodles. These were chicken the other which wasn't available beef? Do not get me wrong for the price you can not beat it. The next time I go to Grandpa's Cheese barn I will be back! read more

This restaurant was clean and the employees were friendly. The food was fine, but not what it had been when we were there many years ago. The food was not bad, by any means, but just not what it had used to be. But many restaurants quality of food has gone downhill over the last few years. Our waitress was not attentive at all. It was almost 10 min before she came to greet us & take our drink order. Someone else brought our food, which is fine, but the waitress never came by to check on us. We were finished eating for a little while before she came to see if we were finished & ready for our check. I'm glad I had asked for 2 glasses of water up front or I would've been out of water for half the meal. The fresh homemade rolls were probably the best quality food we got there. I ordered the broasted chicken with mashed potatoes & gravy. The taste was fine, but not outstanding. The mashed potatoes were almost runny. My coconut cream pie was lukewarm. It tasted good, but would have been better cold. Hubby ordered the roast beef dinner with mashed potatoes & gravy and Mac & cheese. He felt the same about his meal- runny mashed potatoes, roast beef was not bad, but not great that we were expecting from the Amish style cooking. He did enjoy the Mac & cheese. His cherry pie was pretty good & chilled. I tasted a bite of his & thought it was good. The pricing was similar to other sit down restaurants for the type & size of meal. Overall it wasn't a bad experience, just not the excellent meal we were expecting. Would we come back? Probably not. Plenty of restaurants have similar quality food for the price, especially in that Amish area, so if we're in that area again, we'll try someplace else. read more

It took them over an hour to seat me. Then a lot of the food was empty. The people were absolutely nice.

I stopped after a long work day on the road. This was a quick meal. I got seated fast, and had good service throughout. My server was great and sent me with a to-go cup of water for the rest of my journey home. The food itself was good. I got the broasted chicken, mashed potatoes, and noodles, with rolls. I was looking for donuts afterwards. It was kind of late but I didn't see any donuts at this location. I am not sure if they were out or just don't offer them here. There is a lot of seating and even if there is a short line it usually goes fast. They have a gift shop and small bakery to browse after your dining experience. read more

UPDATE - Returned for another broiled chicken dinner and although it was still good, the chicken wasn't up to their past standards. Not piping hot, not as crispy as the amount of fries has dwindled to about half (see my photo from the original review for comparison). Good salad bar as usual. The service and the food were good! The food didn't feel like it was super fresh, but it was delicious for the items that were there.
