I set my GPS, I honestly thought the GPS taken me to a place that murder about to happen. lol Is way up in the hill, and there no sign, I wasn't even sure this is the place even tho I'm looking at the building, house? Well, look like a house, not really a building Went inside, the place is not busy, there is a bar seating, the girl in the bar is very nice, very friendly I seated, the menu has burgers, pasta, steak, typical American restaurant menu, nothing special I ordered the Fettuccine Alfredo, I know, in American restaurant? lol Well, I want some noodle, I think is $14, added grill chicken for another $6 When it come out, the portion is very small, very disappointed, even the chicken is small, very dry Overall, the food I'm giving 3 out of 10, service is great If you in the area, you should order the burger, they probably do better job read more

Valentine's Day Edition: My wife and I met with my parents at Black Dog Tavern as they were having a Valentine's Day steak special. It was delicious! The ribeye was cooked perfectly. Service was fantastic. They were very accommodating and were able to provide my nephew with a high chair. Ambiance was very neat. Eating and having a nice view of the golf course feels very swanky for little ol' Mansfield, OH. I would happily come back as everything on their normal menu looks great! read more

Cool atmosphere, the "Lodge" effect. Good views, with lots of windows/glass. Service was top notch. I had a wrap with a cup of chili, both were really good. We shared an appetizer of onion rings, they were very good. My son had pulled pork and didn't finish it. I asked what he didn't like, he thought the sauce was too sweet. This place is adorable! It's at the top of a large hill (a little scary to drive on in the winter like when we went) overlooking a golf course. It's got a log cabin vibe in the best way. For apps, we got the cheese curds (10/10) and the queso (8/10). I wasn't super hungry so I got soup as my meal and I didn't love it but only because it wasn't hot...I prefer my soup to injure my mouth and theirs was lukewarm. The food isn't fancy, it's just great! The restaurant is spotless and clean. The atmosphere is calming and very "homey" as it is a giant log cabin with beautiful views of the golf course. My wife and I wanted someplace different to go, somewhere we haven't been in a while, so we chose the black dog Ten. We brought our mom so she could get out and about somewhat. We showed up during the end of a rain storm that passed through so Multiple golfers were milling about inside and outside the restaurant. It was a bit loud with all those extra people and everyone wanting to be heard. We decided on opening with adult beverages. My mom and wife both had one of their special cocktails, and I ordered my usual Manhattan. The waitress wasn't sure if they could make one. That said, she clarified it and took our order. For my Manhattan, I asked for chilled up. When our drinks arrived, I Manhattan was in a rocks glass with rocks. . For a starter, we decided on getting there pretzels with beer cheese. The beer cheese is delicious and very spicy! For our dinners, my wife ordered their chicken Parmesan while my mom ordered a chicken wrap and their spicy burger. The chicken Parm dish was huge, my wife enjoyed it. My mom only had positive things to say about her chicken wrap. My spicy burger wasn't that spicy. Actually, the beer cheese seemed to be spicier, that said it was very tasty. I was torn between three or four stars. I'll give them the benefit of doubt regarding my Manhattan. read more

The server was friendly and helpful, the menu was huge, and the food was great! Had some cocktails and they were tasty. All around great dining experience. The ambiance was good. The restaurant is based in the club house, but you would not know it. The service was great and the bar tender was slammed, but she made sure to help everyone at the bar in a timely manner. Great selection of local beers on tap and the food was great. First, we love BDT - we even had our wedding reception here. The Reuben is the reason I love it here. Something has changed. I asked for a corned beef Reuben and honey mustard for my fries. What I got was grilled ham and definitely not corned beef. And I had to ask 2x for honey mustard - at which point my fries were cold. Waitress was so nice about it, but agreed it was definitely not their corned beef on my sandwich. Maybe we'll try again during patio season. read more

Wonderful service! Gorgeous patio views and good food, too. Amanda was the bartender and even though she was super busy, she talked to us and made us feel at home. The sauces and several dishes are made from scratch. The sweet dill vinaigrette was yummy! The sweet bourbon bbq was also very tasty. Most times I write a review it's only because it was so bad I have to warn others not to make the same mistake. But black dog tavern is absolutely the exception. Living in Mansfield most of my life and Bellville for a chunk of it as well I'm baffled that today was my first experience here. Me and my wife decided to check it out today. The beautiful scene outside ( in the end of February mind you), amazing food (including an amazing garlic aïoli burger, pasta, apple pie with ice cream and a queso dip better than any Mexican restaurant), and fantastic service, this is a true gem. The burger and fair fries were amazing and only 13.99( when McDonalds you are lucky to get out for $10) and the beautiful wood interior and stone fireplace are a charming setting to eat. I for sure will be back for drinks at their bar or dinner with the wife or lunch alone for that matter, it's just a matter of how quick!! Highly recommend read more

Traveling through and found this hidden gem using Goggle Maps. We enjoyed a BBQ Chicken Salad, Red Pepper Hummus and Pita Chips, along with Buckeye Pie for dessert (can't skip the buckeye options in Ohio!). Great service from a young waitress and her trainee. This has been our second time to the Black Dog Tavern. The first time was lovely and the food was great, this time however was not a great experience. We had a party of 7 for my husband's birthday and made reservations because on a saturday night this place is pretty busy. Our server seemed to have a lot of tables and was constantly on the move but from the moment she got to our table she had an attitude. She seemed like she rather be doing anything else than helping us. After we got our drinks we had a little accident and a wine glass broke, we started cleaning up the table, and she told us she would be over to clean up the glass. She took the wine glass off the table and whatever pieces were left but didn't get the large chunks off the floor. We had napkins and wine still on the table waiting for her to come back. She never did come back to clean it, she looked at it multiple times walking past it but still nothing. When we ordered food we were greeted with a, "What do you want?" instead of a What can I get you or something more warm and less of a I don't want to be here helping you. My brother-in-law was intrigued by the special and when he asked what exactly it was her response was that she had no idea and no one had ever gotten it. Even if no one had ordered it before a little knowledge of what the special is would be nice for your customers to sell it. When our food came the food runner stepped on it and didn't realize it was glass on the floor, she kindly picked it up but at that point, it shouldn't have been there in the first place to step on. There was also some sort of dance going on so lots of young girls in open-toed shoes were walking around which also could have meant glass in their feet. Our food was good and we decided on dessert since it was my husband's birthday. We ordered the pie and asked for it with ice cream, I told my husband I didn't think she heard the ice cream part and he repeated it to which she said, "I know, do you want vanilla?" It again was off-putting and rude but it was whatever at that point. Sadly the pie came and did not have ice cream on it. It is a little detail but for her to rudely let him know that she knows he asked for it the first time and it to not be there was frustrating. At the end of the day we probably won't be back and even if you are busy you are in the service industry, if you don't like dealing with people maybe you should do something else. read more

We sat outside on the patio and with the weather it was absolutely gorgeous. The tap selection here is great. The wife and I tried a few different beers and enjoyed them all. I had the Prime Rib Pasta and she had the Honey Fire Steak Pasta. Her food was so spicy that we actually had to switch plates but they both had great flavor. The Prime Rib Pasta especially, was absolutely amazing. Our waitress wasn't the best but she was super nice and we weren't being picky. Just sitting out there enjoying the view was fantastic. Black Dog Tavern is a good find if you can find it. Convenient if you're going along Interstate 71 around Mansfield. They have signs pointing the way. It's located right next to a beautiful golf course. The drink and food is good and isn't expensive. I had the Black Dog Martini and a vegetable wrap with chips. It's about $6 for the martini. This is made with blackberry schnapps. It's thicker than the usual martini. The blackberry added sweetness but it wasn't overpowering. If you want beer they have many drafts, as well as bottles and cans. They even put together a 6 pack of various beer for you. It seems to be popular with the regulars. The vegetable wrap was better than it looked, thankfully. It was a tortilla filled with mostly cabbage. The dill vinaigrette really helped make it as good as it was. It would have been very plain without it. The dining room is very nice inside, lots of beautiful wood paneling and tables. It is located on route 97 at exit 165, which is the Bellville exit. It's located on the road next to the Comfort Inn. The road winds up through the woods and finally comes out at the golf course, where there's lots of room for parking. read more

I had not been back to my hometown in five years. During s recent trip back I had the opportunity to eat at the Black Dog Tavern again. It was just as good as I remembered! I had a very good cider with the perfect balance of sweet and acid, and the Steakhouse Mushroom Gouda burger which was phenomenal. There was a huge amount of skinny fries that were good hot but more than half got left on the plate as the burger filled me up. I was offered a slice of Buckeye pie and, as I had never had it but loved Buckeyes, I ordered it. It was so good!! But so rich I had to take half of it to eat the next day. Win-win in my book. Atmosphere was nice, not very crowded at the end of a Thursday night, football games on the TVs and mostly couples eating dinner. It was good to be home again!! read more

Nice location, and there is potential for four stars, but on my first visit they fell short on the customer service and a little off on the doneness of my burger. I really liked the fries and the portion size is generous, but I shouldn't have to stand up and walk to get my own malt vinegar. Refill service was disappointing, again I should not have to get up to get our servers attention to get refills. I really liked the Gouda burger, but if your are going to ask me how I want it cooked the kitchen should know how to cook it that way. I've been "up" to the Black Dog many times and always have a great meal. Atmosphere is laid back, tables are spread out so you aren't on top of your neighbors (patio is great when the weather is nice) and the food doesn't disappoint! Some of my favorites are the Hot Smoked Salmon Salad, The Grilled Reuben and The Whale (Pollack). The quality is always consistent, the servers are friendly and accommodating and the prices are very fair. The restaurant is situated on a golf course at the very top of the hill. You won't find it unless you are looking for it but the drive to the top of the crest can't be matched. I highly recommend the Black Dog Tavern. read more

My fiancé and I had been wanting to try this place since you can sit on the patio and look out onto their golf course, which is a really nice view. We were luckily able to get a table on the patio, a little further from the view but still able to enjoy. There was some kind of private function going on downstairs that was a little noisy and led to people meandering all around the course. I was impressed that they had a decent wine selection and a full bar (even though the place is really dedicated to beer drinkers with a HUGE offering). The food was fabulous. We ordered the queso as an appetizer, and then split the spicy burger and the steak tip pasta. This is certainly not your average bar food. We were blown away with how delicious it was. My only complaint was the queso wasn't served warm enough. Lastly, our waitress was a little younger and maybe wasn't used to people wanting to sit and enjoy their meals, so we felt a little rushed at points.
