Took my kid there for an haircut today , first time of course. All those pictures are uploaded as soon as we got home. The young lady seems very nice person. I never expect my kid looks like a super model after a haircut, but at least not look like Jim Carrey in "dumb and dumber". The front lady checked who checked me out pointed at screen 20% tips. Not 10%, 15%, 18% but 20% only. Unless customer wants to make it ugly, other wise 20%. I am fine with it because of Barber worked, she deserves tips. Just not comfortable with how they set the system up. I don't blame the lady who cut the hair, she is very new and very young and very inexperienced. I am wondering do you know your employee's skill level as an owner? Can we have a little bit of quality control? If you hire someone fresh out of beauty school, aren't you or have someone else suppose to shadow them a little bit? Make sure they do a decent haircut? Don't get me wrong, $50 haircut for kid, I am fine. 20% tips I am fine. But a terrible haircut for my kid, I am not fine. read more

I purchased a Groupon for a facial at Derby, and wowowowow!!! I will admit I don't have a "place" to get regular facials as they're an occasional treat for me, but I will DEFINITELY be returning to see Audrey for facials. She put all of my other facials to shame--she was hands on the entire time, explaining what she was doing, what was coming next, and SO easy to talk to! I was able to discuss my skincare routine without any judgment, and she was so helpful in answering any questions I had. Honestly, a facial with Audrey really changed how I view facials in general--I never knew how good/informative it can be, and I can't even put my past facials in the same league. I hired three lovely ladies from Derby salon on the day of my wedding, and they were awesome! Shoutout to Jessie, Dana and Jordan! They traveled to my wedding venue, arrived on time, were so friendly and efficient! They were able to style 11 people in just a few short hours, and ranged from up-do's to party ponies to braids . I was a very nervous bride that morning, and I can say with confidence that these ladies seriously put me at ease. They even styled the hair of my little flower girls, and made them feel so special. "I went into the salon for my appointment and started to describe my preferences and things I wanted improved that had gone wrong during my previous appointment. She got aggressive and defensive and told me my preferences were wrong and that the other stylist at the other salon was obviously correct. After scalding me, I gestured that I wanted to leave but she wouldn't let go of my jacket. I was humiliate. First she lectured me on my hair preferences and then she tried to trap me in the salon. I came here for a haircut and consultation as I had received a haircut elsewhere that wasn't exactly what I was hoping for. I hopped on Yelp and read about salons near me and found Derby. In the reviews, I read multiple reviews about a stylist named Jordan, stating that she was kind, personable, a great listener and creative with ideas on styles. I can confirm all of these and more! Jordan was so kind, genuine and authentic, interested in me as a person, and immediately made me feel welcome. We shared great conversation and she did an amazing job with my hair, I am beyond thrilled with the outcome. Another thing I really appreciated was that she explained the "why" behind my current style and why that didn't do what I was wanting it to, and what we could do about it, also explaining the why and how before touching my hair. This was so helpful as it decreased my aprehensión and built my confidence in that I was with someone who knows her trade and is interested in my thoughts and concerns. Thank you, Jordan! I had previously planned that Jesse & Alison come super early in the morning to my home & do my makeup & my mother-in-law's hair & makeup (I've been getting my hair done by another stylist so had selected her to do my wedding day hair). But then my hair stylist never came! I was beginning to freak out that my hair wouldn't get done for my big day but Alison came to the rescue! She called the salon & had Jordan come straight to my house to style my hair. Then when Jesse finished up on my MIL, she assisted Jordan on my hair so we could make it to our pictures ASAP. They both did an amazing job just off of a picture I showed them & I couldn't be more thankful that they were there on my wedding day! I visited Derby Salon this week and 10/10 recommend! The service was EXCELLENT from Start to finish. First of all, they are by appointment but were so kind to fit me in at the last minute for an emergency color correction. When I arrived the lady at the front desk checked me in and even brought me a beverage to have during my wait. I waited only 5 min and was taken to the stylist chair straight away. My stylist was Hope and she was amazing! She asked me about my hair history, looked at photos of what I wanted and I could tell that she really cared about what I wanted. I recommend Hope hands down. She nailed my hair goals and she was so kind/ reassuring throughout the process. After my hair service Hope walked me through some products that she used on my hair. Excellent cut and foil from Jaaron! My regular stylist (at a different salon) had to cancel my appt but I still needed to get my hair done yesterday as I am going out of town. I was able to book same day with Jaaron and she was fantastic. I was worried about seeing someone new because, ya know, it's my hair and if it looks bad I look bad...lol. But, I had no reason to worry as Jaaron is really great at what she does. She is very skilled and was extremely thorough with my partial foil and my haircut. I had a great time talking with her. Excellent stylist!!!! Also, the salon is just really nice and laid back. They have great products and cute merchandise for sale and the vibe is nice--not a "rude salon person" in sight. I have been in a couple of times for special events, once for the SIFF red carpet premiere with Joss Whedon and co for Much Ado About Nothing and again for the 2013 Child's Play Dinner. My first hairdo was some death-defying Victory Rolls and my second one was a beautiful assembly of up-swept curls. Both hairdos garnered many compliments so easily, I am a definite fan of this place. Street parking has never been an issue and I need to remember that they offer other beauty services like nails and eyebrows. Check them out if you want something special or some colour that you can't get anywhere else. Be nice to the salon dog! read more

When I moved to Seattle, I was terrified is never find a good, reasonably priced salon. Tried at least three before I ended up at Derby, and I'm now in love. Alex does an amazing job with my hair and is great at interpreting my vague comments into beautiful hair. Even better, prices just can't be beat. I pay about $40 for a cut and about $120 for a cut and partial foil. I'm someone who gets disgustingly attached to stylists and I can say I'm never going anywhere else while I live in Seattle. read more

The salon is adorable. The chill vibe is amazing. The people are very nice. But ... I walked out with essentially my natural color of hair after a full foil and it is about 3 shades darker than what I asked for (yes I showed a pic); and, in trying to style my hair for the first time I discovered that too few layers were cut into my short hair so it just flops on itself. In looking closer there are sections I can see where different sections were cut with a clean line making it hard to style and candidly making it look like a good old-fashion bowl cut from some angles. Bottom line: If you're looking for a natural look and have long hair- this would be a great place to go. I wouldn't recommend this place for those of us who want a bolder color of cut that falls outside straight lines. I have already booked at another place who can hopefully fix my hair, but am bummed by my hair and that this salon didn't work out for me. read more

Revision: In my review, I complained about the fact that I had been charged for a manicure that I should have gotten for free, which made me drop my rating down to 3 stars. However, Derby ended up giving me a $25 credit toward a future service, with no expiration. Way to make up for it! The service at this salon is great overall. I did waxing with Stephanie one time, and came back and had a manicure with Megan. Both did an excellent job and used really high quality products (nice wax, good soothing oil, OPI polish, the works). The salon is airy and clean. The staff members all seem to be having a great time. They have free coffee, tea, and wine. So why don't they get 4 or 5 stars? When I booked my appointment for my manicure, I said specifically that I wanted to take advantage of a free mani special that you get if you've made another appointment during the same month. However, after I got the service, I was slapped with a $27 bill - way too much for any manicure that doesn't involve a good amount booze and food, or at least a massage or something. I tried to explain that I only did the mani because of the special, but the receptionist said I would have to come back because the special applies only to manis with one woman who wasn't working that day. I love the idea of having "happy hour brows" and monthly deals, but they're no good if your staff doesn't inform the customers properly of how to take advantage of them. A misunderstanding is one thing, but it's not cool to make the customer pay for your mistake at the end of the day. Still, I think the salon is great and I want to go back. I will just have to be more careful the next time I try to take advantage of one of their deals. read more

If I could rate it 0 I would. I have gone in to get my hair dyed 3 times there and every time it always turns out awful. This time they left my end purple from over toning and the top ORANGE from not leaving the bleach and toner on long enough. I tried to live with it but every day I have someone asking me why my hair is orange. Please this is the best advice I have for anyone don't go here. I'm almost positive all the stylists are straight out of beauty school because they ALWAYS fuck up and I have never seen a stylist stay for more than a year. My hair also cost me $240 and I cry about it daily. If anyone has any other hair salon suggestions please sen them my way. read more

Although Georgia is new to the Derby Salon fam (wrapping up her apprenticeship), she's pretty open to collaborate with the other stylists, get their opinions on products and techniques to use and everyone was so helpful and friendly!!! Derby is a fantastic salon! Very clean and modern with an upbeat, non-pretentious vibe. I love the Bumble and Bumble products they use, and they sell a lot of really cute jewelry and other goods. They also have complimentary wine while you get your hair done! Their prices are affordable and no one pressures you into purchasing styling products. The young woman who works at the front desk is a sweetheart, and my stylist, Shelby, is just wonderful! I am very picky about my hair and she always does a great job. She listens, provides feedback, and works hard to make sure you get what you want. Shelby makes you feel so welcome and beautiful, and has a warm, down to earth demeanor. So... I've been here twice within 2 weeks and I did have a great haircut by Shelby but I'm so very unsatisfied with the hair color. The first time I showed her an image of what I wanted a redish/brown color which was bright and what I got was a super bright redish orange color which I was kind of okay with but wasn't like the image. She told me if I wanted to come back within 2 weeks if I didn't like it which I thought she would fix it for free or something. Came back within 2 weeks realizing it faded really fast. Told her I wanted equal parts red and brown with brightness and she told me she went darker as it'll fade in 2 or 3 wishes to a lighter color. Well, when I got home, it looks like my natural hair color, see no red pigment in it and got charged for it. At that point I knew I wouldn't get my desired hair color and wanted to get out of there. I should of kept my original hair color and gotten it fixed somewhere else to the color I wanted in the first place. read more

I bought a 60 minute custom facial off Groupon (original price $95, Groupon price $49). Probably the best facial I have had in years. While $95 is a steep price to pay for a facial, I would say that this one is probably worth it. Cami (Tami?) really did a wonderful job and used a variety of different products/tools for my facial. She was a total chatterbox either, which I appreciated it. I would recommend that if you get the Groupon, get the two for 89 instead of the one for 49. I really wish I had gotten the two instead of just the one. read more

I'm a guy. I'm a guy who loves to look good. I love to look good because it makes me feel better & kinder. For me, it all starts with the hair. About 6 months ago, I ventured out into the salon abyss searching for a new hairstylist who would match the skills of the 2 trusted souls whom I had been loyal for almost 7 years...7 years! That's a very big deal to me, especially after one of them showed me that I had a wonderful head of curls that I had been hiding from the world! Essentially, the bar was set high & that's where I like it. After a few lackluster cuts, with the last one leaving me so frustrated that I almost buzzed it all off, I found Alex! I went in primarily for a color job--it's indigo again!--but couldn't shake off the fact that I was about to dish out hard earned dollars to get my indigo back on a head of hair that didn't feel like it deserved it. Color can only do so much to complement a particular style, but a well coiffed head of curls & a beautiful color job can help the style transcend it's true intention! Super thankful that the research I did paid off, as Alex was an integral part of this transformation. Almost immediately after meeting with her, my mind was put to ease. I don't trust very easily, yet something about how we interacted made the moment very serendipitous. We talked about the color I wanted after I left the vaguest of note when I booked the appointment online. I mentioned that I wasn't digging the last cut I had from another person not affiliated with the salon, & her ears perked up. Curls, you say? Let's bring 'em back to life! Alex listened to every detail & was methodical in her work. A snip here, a twist there, & VOILA..they started to bounce again. When it came to the color portion, she explained what she was going to do & why...she is the professional...& for the first time in a very long time, trust was automatically given to a complete stranger, who, incidentally, is a stranger no more! My search is over & I'm excited for future appointments with her! read more

I'd like someone who is older than my notebook from my college Chemistry class to cut my hair. I'm not an ageist; I just want to talk to someone who understands that, when you're over 30, you need a little something more from your haircut than just perkiness, edginess, or any other -ness that doesn't involve some sort of trick-of-the-eyes facelift. The woman who cut my hair was very sweet. And, bless her little 19-year-old heart, she tried very diligently to make conversation with this frumpy, 30-something stay-at-home mother of a toddler even though it was clear that we had less in common than Margaret Thatcher and Britney Spears. (Guess which one I am.) Three stars for a good effort. And also because not one of the people who worked there pointed and laughed as I left with the too-young-for-me, opposite-of-what-I-asked-for haircut I now sport. It's really only inconvenient in that I've been forced to take up clubbing and am spending my free time doing research on how to become a more successful cougar. read more

Derby, you suck! At least your reception staff sucks (my normal stylist Lyndsay is amazing). I had a terrible experience with (a lack of) customer service today. Read no further if you don't want to bathe in the fire of my righteous indignation. Whoever was at the desk/reception this morning was not amazing. I arrived right on time for my 11:30 haircut appointment and the (in retrospect, inexperienced and inarticulate) receptionist told me my stylist was out sick. Why didn't they call to warn me before I had driven all the way across town? Oh, they tried, but apparently, I had given them a bad contact number. We double-checked, and lo and behold the number in their system was correct. My phone never rang though, and there was no record of Derby ever calling me, so the receptionist was either lying about trying to call, or she had misdialed. But there was no acknowledgment of that possibility and no apology, nothing to dissuade my disappointment. But she told me I could see another stylist in just a couple of minutes. Despite my misgivings about seeing a stranger when I had my heart set on Lyndsay, I relented, also because I hated the thought of walking away and wasting the time and money spent getting there on a Saturday morning. The receptionist made no effort to make me feel welcome - there was no offer of tea or water - I was simply made to wait. And wait. 15 minutes later I was told to go put a smock on - that someone would see me in another 10-15 minutes. I just got a bad vibe from the whole thing, imagining the very real possibility of wasting even more time waiting, and told her that I was leaving and would rebook my appointment when Lyndsay was back. If I go back. I wish I could have just collected myself and told the silly receptionist that I was frustrated by her lack of customer service - because isn't a salon supposed to make clients feel pretty and witty and gay and not like some afterthought?! Derby, I would hate to lose Lyndsay as my stylist, but until you make it up to me, I don't want you as my salon. read more

Derby is where my boyfriend and his friends get their hairs did and in an odd twist of Fate, my stylist at Helle (Chivahn) ended up in G-town by way of Derby so I was definitely familiar with the name. My trip there this weekend wasn't hair-related, though - it was for a morning full of one-year anniversary pampering courtesy of said boyfriend. I patiently waited to book my appointment for a date almost a month after I received the gift card, but only days before my bf is coming home for the holidays. They're open 7 days a week, so it wasn't too hard to find the ideal time for my increasingly busy schedule. Just late enough in the morning to avoid grumpiness, I arrived and had a few minutes to relax before the massage therapist Kristin came out to retrieve me for what turned out to be an amazingly helpful and relaxing massage. I came out with loosened muscles and smelling lightly of mangoes, ready for a manicure and pedicure. At that point I was wrangled by Megan, who is responsible for the bf's coif and for that day, my nails. We spent the majority of the next few hours chatting as she painted on a nice shiny magenta and turned my neglected paws into soft, supple, pretty appendages. They also have a faster, cheaper happy hour version for those of us who might be in more of a rush (but it's only available during certain hours - check their website!) and an even fancier, longer version if you're craving a paraffin dip and such. I'm super frugal and It's a bit far from my 'hood, which is pretty much the only thing that would keep me from going here on the regular. ***One distasteful note: When making the appointment, I mentioned a few times that it was a GIFT from my bf and I had a GIFT CARD (he's pretty well known there, so they knew exactly who gave it to me.) When I went to check out, the receptionist (without a pause) told me the total owed instead of just asking for the card. Way freakin' tacky and pretty inappropriate to tell the receiver of a gift how much the giver paid.*** read more

I went in for partial highlights and a cut. I have dark blonde hair and asked for a natural looking more golden tone. Emphasis on natural. I ended up walking out three hours later with almost the exact same color due to a dark toner the stylist used. I came back the next week asking her to fix it since I had essentially paid for... No difference in color. The salon only scheduled me for 45 minutes and the stylist rushed through breaking up and lightening the highlights, as don't have time to dry my hair. When I did it became apparent that I have super streaky platinum stripes through my hair. I emailed the salon again and received a condescending response saying they had done everything I had asked and was given the price to fix the mess THEY had created. My hair has been processed twice in two weeks now and is really color damaged and looks terrible and trashy. I wrote one more email to the salon explaining my situation and received no response. I received totally unprofessional hair service and subsequent poor customer service. I do not recommend going to Derby Salon. read more

I wanted to like the Derby Salon, I really did. It's in my neighborhood and just my sort of place, so I stopped by today to see if they had any openings. They told me they had one in half an hour so I rushed off got breakfast and was back in time for my appointment. ... Only to be told that they were running a little late and could I wait for 20 minutes? Ok, that's not ideal, but they gave me tea and I waited, and waited, then waited somemore. Over half an hour later, and having been completely ignored in the meantime I got up and left. When they finally realized I'd gone (about 10 minutes later) they called to apologize and offer to get me in "right away" or give me a gift the next time I was there. Thing is, there isn't going to be a next time. That was my first impression and it was bad. I hear the haircuts are great, but I'll never know. Why would I spend my money there when I can go elsewhere? Point is, if you're going to run that late, talk to your customers and don't waste their time. So like I said, I really wanted to like the Derby Salon and now I never will. read more

Derby, I love you! I've been seeing mostly Megan for the last year, though occasionally Chandra steps in when Megan isn't available. My color always rocks (and lasts forever!) and my haircuts always look fantastic! Of the two, Megan is more freestyle with her styling while Chandra's cuts/styling look more structured, but they both do a great job on me. Now my mom, my little sister and some girlfriends all go to Derby as well! Two things that make Derby stand out from the crowd (besides awesome stylists and reasonable prices for service): 1) Dog-friendly. What more can I say about that one? 2) When I called 30 minutes before my appointment with Megan, frantic because I had lost my wallet, they offered to let me come in and have my service done anyway, asking only that i drop a check off the next day. I love love LOVE businesses that go out of their way to accommodate and appreciate their regular customers, and even though I wasn't able to come in (wallet lost = checkbook lost as well, plus the paranoia about my bank account being drained while I was getting colored = paralyzing!), they were understanding and didn't put the late cancellation on my "permanent record" :) Let me say it again: Derby, I love you! read more

For starters, the people that worked here were friendly. I had a living social coupon my boyfriend bought me awhile back and I finally decided to use it for a special event. I made an appointment to get my hair styled, a mani pedi and make up. The hair: oh God, this is what wanted me to get the f* out of there quickstyle. The person that did it was REALLY nice so I feel terrible, though I wont even say her name. Let someone else be a bitch for once! She did an updo in some wierd style completely off of what I asked for. I even had pictures for her to copy from and it was a complete fail. It even started falling half an hour after I left. I also wanted to add that I explained to her what my hair was like and she still didn't get it. The nails: started peeling the next day because she laid the clear coat on too thick. I have friends who do nails for a living so watching her do it was excrutiating. The make up: When I asked for dramatic eyes, I got BLAH. I wanted bold eyeliner, dramatic colors something that would stand out. I mentioned Kim Kardashian eyes for god's sake. Famewhore make up! Nope. I got total BLAH. He tried but alas, another fail sorry. So basically I went home tried to fix my hair and added alot more touches to my make-up. To be honest part of the issue at hand was the lack of communication on my part.
