If you gallop around in high heels all over town you will at some point need those little heel caps replaced. If you have a lot of heels and you're constantly replacing them at $12.00 for a pair, the cost can really add up. But here's a sweet deal y'all, for a prepay of $30.00 you can get 5 pairs of those buggary heel caps replaced. Let me amaze you with my math skills here: that equals $6.00 each or otherwise known as 1/2 price. How rad is that? They also give you your shoes back all cleaned and polished up. I am also happy they are open on Saturday which I find super convenient. The folks here are super nice and very helpful. I was also told about a discount offered when you prepay rather than pay at the time of pickup. Dereks has always done top notch work on my boots and this time was no exception. Twice in the past I've taken my cowboy boots for new heels and spiff up and both times they came back looking brand new. This time I had my Doc Martens fixed up with new boot straps and leather decorative straps smoothed out and restitching done on the inside. Jessica really took great care of everything and let me know how I could get a few more miles out of them and took care of that too. They look terrific. So, i have no real basis for comparison, but can at least build confidence for other "first timers." I'd had this pair of Vaughn Chukkas for several years, and they were in real bad shape before I thought them to Derek's -- almost no heels left, the toe burst away from the sole. I shopped around a little bit, and Derek's seemed to offer the highest quality materials, good turn around, and fair prices. The J&R heels and soles they put on are great, and the sides are died to almost the original color! I think I like them better than when I first bought them. I am with Carissa on this one. Dereks RULES! The staff at Dereks are very helpful and extremely careful with my favorite things ever: shoes! Becuase I love shoes so much, I have an inate desire to keep them in good shape. That means that for most of the winter here in PDX I wear my gum boots so that all the other pairs can stay dry and warm at home. If I do have a pair that ends up with non existent taps or a hole in the sole, then off to dereks it is. Going to dereks is much cheaper than buying a new pair of shoes - and less wasteful! They are quick and knowledgeable and you even get a few % off your bill if you pay when you drop them off! For shoes that are really goners, you can donate them for the apprentices to practice on. Derek's is great because they're so completely honest. I remember it all started when they helped me repair shoes I'd purchased from Johnny Sole. I was so impressed that I've been loyal to this shop ever since. Worst experience I've ever had with a business. I dropped my shoes off the last week in November and was warned it would be 3 weeks before my shoes would be done. After 4 weeks I called and they weren't done, I was not bothered as I didn't need the shoes for anything specific. By January 5 I was concerned and called again only to find a clearly angry owner who had been having this conversation a lot according to other reviews, I see now. Without any provocation, other than asking if the shoes have been lost, the guy proceeded to yell at me about not being able to find them. Yes, he was yelling at me, over the phone, about my shoes that he couldn't find. I've never been yelled at by a business owner. Never would I ever have expected it either. This was seriously my worst experience as a customer and I wish I had never ever stepped foot into Derek's. read more

How I wish I could find a good shoe repair place in Portland. I've been to three different places now, and I haven't been fully satisfied with any of the jobs these guys have done. I've been to Dorian's, JD's and Derek's and either they did not do a good job, or the job took too long, or it was really expensive. None of these places have hit the trifecta of good job, quick turn-around, and reasonably priced. I've taken a number of shoes to Derek's because this shop is close to my work, and he was giving me a good price for bringing in about five pairs of shoes total. All of the repairs for these shoes were basic: heel replacement or reinforcement, and a shine. This shop did a good job with the heel replacements- the replacement seemed strong and looked like it may last a while, but I wouldn't call this the cleanest job. There was shoe polish or dirt smudged all over the heels when I received them. I know I didn't ask for "smudge-free" heals, but I don't think that was very professional of them. I had requested a polish for some of my shoes that were leather or suede, and they did not do a good job here at all. The person working there even offered to re-do the job for me, which would've been third time around, because I had requested a re-do already, but at this point I didn't want to come back again in another two weeks so I passed. They just cannot seem to get a good polish down. I think if they worked on cleaning the smudge off of shoes before returning them, and focused when they're polishing, then this would be a much better shoe repair shop. read more

I have had the same problem with my shoes (rubber separating from the leather - design flaw). Since it keeps happening I have taken it many different places to get them glued back together. Derek''s is the best, his glue job can't even been seen after he finishes it. I have used them to resole a couple of pairs of shoes and have been happy with the results. Since I live out of town (and still use them), they get my order done really fast. I will continue to use them. read more

Great and honest shoe repair Thanks girls, for recommending this place. My friend has these black , sexy boots that she's absolutely loves but unfortunately the bottom of one of the heels continually breaks on her. She asked me where was a good spot to get them fixed one last time before she sadly gave them away, which was my suggestion after they broke for the umpteen time. The staff fixed her heel right then while we waited, and I'm happy and surprised to report that is hasn't broken since! They were also honest and said that if it breaks again, not to bother to fix it. But for now, her boots and our dancing fun happily lives on. Tip: I know it's tempting to throw out shoes but take the 15 minutes and drop them off at Good Will or another agency. What some of us get bored with or outgrow can be someone else's brand new shoes. read more

Derek's is tremendous, and Jessica is the best. Brought a pair of shoes in last week that needed some sewing done on the lining, and Jessica promised them in 13 days time. A good sign, by the way: beware of the business with no business! Anyway, I was able to pick them a few days early, and what a terrific job. First rate repair, and a shine like you can't believe. Extremely disappointed with the way things were handled when my shoes were given away to charity. It is my fault, I left them too long because I moved out of the neighborhood during the summer while my winter shoes were being repaired. I received no call before my favorite leather boots were given away ( left apr- aug), as they said they would. When I called they had been given away and the owner offered to give me a gift certificate. I immediately emailed and asked if they could send email/mail the gift certificate, or tell me the value, b/c I knew it would be a while till my next repair. I received no response. I called again today to follow up with shoes that needed to be repaired, he said he couldn't help me and that he wouldn't send a gift certificate because it was my fault. When I asked why he hadn't sent it to me when I followed up earlier he said It was my fault and that if I couldn't be bothered to come pick it up, they shouldn't be expected to send it. He said I was punishing a small mom and pop store. I didn't know I was supposed to pick it up. I reminded him that I had been a regular customer, and had never gotten angry previously, but that now I would likely not return and not recommend it to my friends. He asked me if I was threatening him which seemed like an absurd response. He mentioned my "threats" several more times. I would say the service is decent typically, but don't forget your shoes! Life happens, and it would have been nice to have them be a little more understanding or give a call before giving away expensive shoes. It was my fault and the ticket states their policy. I will never go back. But the owner jerry made it very clear he doesn't want me as a customer anyway. I'm pretty sure this 1 of 2 bad reviews I've given on my 5+ years on yelp. read more

The staff are nice and I never waited for a long time to get my shoes back besides when it was right around New Years which was absolutely understandable... I go there mainly to get protective soles and the last time I went there (last week), it was actually next day delivery. Free downtown delivery.. Though I love the quality of the work, I'm still on the fence about Derek's Shoe Repair. The first time had my boots repaired and shined (Italian leather $250 boots) over a year ago, they did an excellent job with the work. The second time I gave them one pair of shoes, they did a great job once again. The third time I handed them two pairs of shoes: one needed a simple stitch in the back and shine and the other needed more work. I was told that they would be ready that next Monday. I wasn't able to get there until over a week after so I expected my shoes to be waiting at the door for me. After giving him my tag, he looked in vain for my shoes, but turns out they would not be ready for another two days because they needed to order an extra piece to repair the shoes with. I didn't mind so much, but I wished they would have called and saved me the trouble of driving in downtown, parking, etc. My shoes were ready two days later and once again, they did an excellent job. Four stars because my shoes was not ready when they said they would be especially since I unintentionally gave them an extra week to repair it, and the fact they did not call me to update me on the status. read more

I've taken 2 nice pairs of Allen Edmonds there and they've turned out perfect each time, and both times they can back to me polished up and in better shape than when I took them. Ive read some of the comments about timing issues, but the first time I asked for a rush and they were done next day. The second time he said they'd be done this afternoon, and they were done this afternoon. Admittedly, if you're looking for bedside manner you'll have better luck at a Hooter's, but that's not in the top 5 of things I'm looking for in a shoe repair shop (although some curly fries would have been a nice touch).
