Derek did a cut and color for me last week and I was not happy with the results (too dark and an uneven cut). I called and scheduled an appointment to fix it the following week. I arrived on time and waited a good 45 minutes until I'd had enough and went over to his station while he was still working on his client because the employee at the front desk wasn't particularly helpful. I told him how long I'd been waiting and that I was leaving. He was very defensive and said it wasn't his fault. Really? Whose fault was it? I told him that someone should have let me know that he was running so far behind. Not cool Derek. Obviously I won't be going back. read more

I've been getting my haircut here for about 4 years. Derek the owner was my stylist. He's a very personable guy and I like to support small businesses. Unfortunately things have been slipping at the salon. Several times I was kept sitting in the lobby area at least 40 minutes with wet hair waiting for him to finish another client. No one on staff had the courtesy to say sorry he's running late or would you like a water/coffee while you wait. There was no communication from him or his staff. Derek didn't always give me much of a consultation and I often felt rushed even when the salon was quiet. In August I went for a haircut with Derek. When he finished it looked ok from the quick glance he gave me with the handheld mirror. When I returned home I was shocked to see the worst cut I've ever had! There was a lot of long hair hanging down underneath the line and the end of my hair was not laying properly. This is the second time he cut my hair badly. The first time I returned and he re-did it. This time it was 10 times worse! Also I had to leave on a flight to London the next day. So I had to pay to get my hair recut by a stylist who was appalled at the mess my hair was in. I contacted Derek's staff who suggested I come in and let him re-cut it again! As I was now in London this was impossible and how many times would anyone want to go back to get their hair re-cut by someone who claims to be a master in their field! Plus the salon is a20 mile drive from my house. I requested a refund and they sent a check to my house. Needless to say I will never return as a client and would never recommend Derek the Salon to anyone. read more

One of the most ridiculous experiences I've had at a so-called high end salon. The space itself has potential but the decor is extremely dated. It's like they're stuck in the 90's. The color service I had was sloppily applied (color all over my forehead and ears) by a nice but inexperienced person still in beauty school! I paid top dollar for my color to be done by a student. I could have gone to the school and paid 1/4 the price for the same service with the same person as I was informed jokingly. Not funny. Following my color, I had to wait 45 minutes before I was seated in the owners chair. Then I waited another 20 minutes as derek apparently left to get coffee. What I know from this experience is that this place is a sham and the owner is a self entitled person with no regard for anybody's time and scams people with ridiculously high prices for work done by unlicensed beauty school students. Avoid at all costs. In the end, I left with an average haircut done by an average stylist who made me miss my lunch plans with friends. read more

My last 2 experiences at Derek's are exactly that as I will never go back. The 1st I was booked for color cut and blow dry with my regular stylist DANA who double booked herself I guess to make more $ and after she put my color on informed me I'd have to wait a ridIculos amount of time to be finished because she had another client she then came back to me and asked if I would mind leaving with my hair wet !!! Never been treated so poorly at a salon in my life Finally after I objected an apprentice dried my hair and they charged me $80 for the color blow dry 3 hrs later was free wow. The owner Derek was alerted to the incident and was very apologetic and asked what he could do for me to make it up to me as I was obviously very upset I said since I never got my cut could he cut my hair He agreed and made an appointment for me the following Tuesday again he was very apologetic on Tuesday And charged me $98 for the cut what a way to "make it up to me" Why I paid I'm not sure I guess I was in sagain But I will say not only will I never return I will NEVER recommend them to anyone who wants to be treated as they should be read more

Maybe things have gone downhill over the years, but my experience was not positive. First, upon entry into the salon, no one acknowledged me. The receptionists sat chit chatting, completely ignoring me. I was left to awkwardly stand waiting. After a few minutes of this uncomfortable posturing, I went to have a seat on an uncomfortable faux fur bench that looks like it came from Pottery Barn teen. Finally, a receptionist was "available"...I gave my name and waited until my stylist was ready for the appointment. Okay, so this is where my issues really began. Once the stylist sat me down in her chair, she asked me how I wanted my hair cut. I told her I didn't know (I was hoping for her to make some suggestions....I'm not a stylist) but I told her what has worked in the past. She proceeded to explain that look was out of style and recommended an alternative look. She also recommended I try styling my hair- which I found rude. Normally the stylists are able to give me great cuts that work with my hairs natural texture for a simple wash and go look- and it works. Fine, ok I'll try her suggestion. It's hair- it'll grow back if I hate it. No biggie. We proceed to the shampoo. If you are petite, be prepared to arch your back uncomfortably. The chairs are poorly designed and uncomfortable. If you have an issue with your cervical spine- go ahead and schedule an appointment with your neurologist (or better yet, just skip this salon but hey we will get to that later). Anyhow, she cut, styled. It was fine. Not great but whatever, I figured I wash it and style it the way I like and see what happened. Well what happened is I had homeless lady hair- like I literally drove by a haggard toothless women with a sign standing on the corner who had literally the same terrible cut. Well, I'm pretty sure this lady didn't shell out $$$ at Derek- no, it was more likely I had just received a terrible cut from an overhyped stylist. I tried to go back and let her redeem herself at a second appointment. At the second appointment, when I voiced my concerns, she shot daggers at me with her eyes. I silently wondered whether I should trust her again. I wanted to believe she could do it. I relented and headed back to the uncomfortable shampooing chair. This is when I began to realize that I may have made a poor choice. As my head dangled back uncomfortably, the stylist pushed violently against my scalp causing my neck to hyperextend. I shook from the pain. Once she was completed, we went back to the chair. She asked me if I was ok and I told her the truth- she had hurt me. At that point, I wasn't sure whether it was accidental or intentional. She needed to grab something from the back room. As soon as she left, I grabbed my belongings and escaped. I never heard from Derek Salon again. Luckily, I also was able to book in with a different stylist at another local salon and received a wonderful wash and go cut- and it looks great. It's Definitely NOT out of style lol. It's fun and modern and low maintenance and everything a cut should be. The stylist laughed when I retold my experience and said he hears it ALL THE TIME AND sees the bad cuts coming out of Derek's. Derek's is a total joke. Who knows how this place got so over hyped but it's literally the worst salon I have ever been to! read more

To get an appointment with Derek.. ageing. The salon, stylistic work of art.! The people, some of the nicest people I have met since moving to Sarasota.!! Now for the most important part ... Derek, I took a picture of how I wanted my hair to turn out, and he delivered that and so much more. Loved how my hair looked, felt and smelled. That almost never happens, that all three are accomplished . I will be stopping by this week to buy some of their special hair care professional products you can't find anywhere else.! Oh and if you can't wait for Derek. I did notice that all of his stylist seemed to be top notch!!!!!
