Tip: Collect PC Optimum points at this store. A few months ago, I was at Rexall at the corner of Finch Avenue and Dixie Road. In the same plaza was Derek's Your Independent Grocer store. It intrigued me back then, especially with a Loblaws store close by on Kingston Road. I needed to get some groceries before I took in a matinee flick at Cineplex in Pickering. My original thought was to hit the Food Basics near this movie theatre. My route had me passing by this grocery store. Hey, why not give this place a try? I was driving eastbound on Finch Avenue. I took a right into the parking lot. It was spitting rain. I parked fairly close to the entrance and walked over to the entrance. I like that shopping carts don't require that you scramble for change to unlock it. I got a smaller one, as I didn't need a ton of items for this haul. I then walked in. I always like visiting a supermarket that I've never been to. I liked the produce section. Everything looked fresh. It wasn't overwhelming, as it is smaller supermarket. Prices are slightly expensive, as it's technically affiliated with Loblaws. However, I like the selection and variety. I needed celery and an avocado. They were both in pristine condition. The latter looked like every one was super ripe, but it wasn't the case when you held a few in your hand. I got a pineapple. There was a sale. Yay! In the prepared food section, wings were on sale. My highlight was seeing a perogies meal, complete fried onions and coleslaw. Wow! It was cool seeing sushi pockets in the frozen food fridge in both tuna mayo and salmon teriyaki. I grabbed the former to try out. This store also had beef rolls for hot pot. Impressive! I got a box of St Hubert tourtière in a pack of two that I've never seen before. I liked the smaller size that you can heat and eat. I wasn't planning on getting any pop here. However, I saw 7up in zero-sugar watermelon. It was new to me and a limited edition. I needed to get a case and did. This place had a ton of ICEE drink packs. It gave summer vibes early. I found the discount section. I ended up getting some ramen and a pack of PRIME drink packets that were heavily marked down in price. There was so much to see. I was extremely happy to have found bottles of furikake. I grabbed a bottle. This store has human cashiers and self-checkout kiosks. I went with a female cashier who was pleasant. She admitted that she was tired when she asked me for my PC Optimum barcode a second time. She had already scanned it. I was pleased to see a lavender reusable bag that I could purchase. I've been shopping with a reusable Yelp bag for a few years that has lost a lot of its insulated lining and had seen better days. This lavender bag was larger and would be a nice replacement despite not being insulated. This woman was great helping me place my items in my new bag. I put in the remaining items as she was getting me Disney stickers. I paid with a credit card. I tapped and was done. I thanked this woman and rolled my groceries over to my car. I then put my cart away. I liked shopping here. It had everything that I needed and a lot more. (182) read more

I have been VERY impressed by the way Allan's has been dealing with the covid-19 distancing mandates and safety for their employees and customers. I typically shop at Loblaws but left feeling quite upset after the way customers were being treated the last time I was there. I can't go without my PC products so I knew I'd be making the switch to Allan's. The following week when we did our shopping at Allan's I was very happy to see that the entire store had been laid out with directional signs to help customers flow through the store with the least amount of contact or confusion. When we queued at the checkout, we were directed where to go and when. Everything was orderly and structured. We were in and out in no time and everyone was friendly and courteous. THAT's how you do it. Bravo to Allan's and their team and THANK YOU for being there for us. read more

Came here to pick up a few groceries for dinner and checked out their lunch menu. Your choices are Fried Chicken or Fried Chicken or Fried Chicken or Dried out Roast Chicken. The sides are all fried too. No cole slaw was available or alternatives. I ordered a crispy fried chicken sandwich and fries. The only side available. I took it home. 5 minutes drive? Whites Road and Finch. The worst sandwich ever! The chicken was cold. Would not even consider calling it mildly warm. The bread was stale. Crumbled apart in pieces. I had to deconstruct the sandwich and heat up the chicken and toast some bread. The fries were also cold. Terrible. I didn't really want to eat too many anyways but one was enough. For $5.00 this was a rip off. Don't buy anything from their counter. This place should be ashamed for serving this. read more

Allan's is a small, local grocery store, and it is affiliated with Loblaws. It carries a lot of President's Choice Loblaws products. They have some good sales in the weekly flyers, and they do give back to the community. Your shopping experience is clearly a priority at this Independent Grocer, and they ensure that they hire friendly, helpful staff. For customer service and the value of products on sale (generally advertised in their flyer), they deserve 5 stars. It is worth looking over their meat department selection, because they often will sell for 50% off a meat product which is nearing it's expiry date. Less frequently, you will find the same deals in the cheese sections of the deli. If you are, say, driving home from work and looking for a piece of meat to cook up immediately for your family's dinner, or a luxury cheese at a very low price, then Allan's may have something for you. I buy this reduced-price meat or cheese often, and rarely do I have a piece that is too expired to use. They will not refund your money, though, if you buy one which turns out to be spoiled, so caveat emptor! It's a risk I'm willing to take, particularly with cheese or beef bones for broth (which I make in my pressure cooker. What germ can withstand that heat?). Otherwise, however, their meat and produce is on par with your average Loblaws. In short, it pays to look in their flyers and check out the daily discounted fare. It is, as I mentioned earlier, a small grocery store, so I don't usually do a major expedition at Allan's. However, as a local store, conveniently located on my path from work to home, it serves the majority of my basic daily, or even spur-of-the-moment needs. read more

Consistently disappointed that this grocer can't keep up with the prices at my usual grocer... Metro... which is considered one of the more expensive grocery stores offered in Durham. My doctors office is in the plaza that this Independent grocer anchors. I figured it makes more sense to stop in here when I have an appointment, than to go to my home store on the way home. I do this from time to time every few months and I have the same experience every time. Won't be making that mistake again. Went in looking to get something for a quick dinner. Went to the meat section and didn't see much available but was shocked at the astronomical meat prices. Given, I make a point of shopping sale meats, but even the marked down stuff was pricey. Decided I could stop for the meat elsewhere and I'd pick up the other parts of my meal here. The fresh produce was terribly priced, although fresh looking. Went to look at pasta sauce and it was almost $5 a bottle when I normally pay $3.50 or less. Wanted to get some fresh sliced provolone... But their deli doesn't have cheese in the case. And the cheese available, prepackaged, was $5.99, when I get it for at least dollar less at Metro. It all adds up in the end. The only thing they were on par with was their fresh buns. Ended up putting my stuff down and leaving the store. Convenience isn't worth an extra $10 on a grocery bill. I'll stop elsewhere to avoid the high prices here. read more

This smaller, franchise store is part of the Loblaw's family so most of their sales are the same as at a regular Loblaws store, although there are always a few differences where they substitute something they carry for something Loblaws has that they don't. While they are smaller, you can find most items you need there, unless you want something esoteric or specialty. Their produce is always fresh and the meat isn't bad quality for a grocery store. The deli food is also quite tasty. The big draw for me is they are on my way to and from work, so I pass them twice a day. They are also good about putting 50% off stickers on things expiring in a day or two, so you can get some good deals on those things as long as you plan to use them right away. read more

If I could give them a 0 I would. Unfortunately I had a very rude encounter with the staff and owner regarding my PC pickup order. During this Pandemic it has been very difficult for many to receive or attain groceries. I attempted to order an item that was on sale at this grocery store and the day of my pick up they contacted me at end of day to notify that my order was instead cancelled as the item was not available. I instead asked to speak to a manager to resolve the issue and inquire if I could still receive the item once it was in stock and if they would honour the price. I spoke to Chelsea who confirmed my order, confirmed the items were not available but I would be contacted in 3 days once they were for pick up and also CONFIRMED I would be charged the sale price due to the inconvenience. She also confirmed they would hold the remaining items of my order until I could pick up all items. I never received a call back and decided to call to inquire. Instead of having appropriate customer service I was "directed" by the store owner Tyler Allan that I could not speak directly to Chelsea and that his staff DID NOT say this and instead I misunderstood. This was not the case as she confirmed my order total with the sale price multiple times. When I tried to explain this he once again directed me to not call his store again and that we were wrong. When I expressed I understood he may be under a lot of stress due to COVID 19, however the way he was acting was very rude he dismissed my remark and advised he was done speaking about the situation. I am very disappointed with the service of this grocery store and have never experienced that communication from a store owner before. I would not recommend shopping or ordering a PC Express order from this store. read more

I find this place a bit expensive, but I've never had a problem with the quality of the food.

I became hooked on "Independent Grocers" up in Haliburton were we had a cottage. Loved the service, the availability of the PC products, fresh veggies and fruit and the homemade breads. It just seemed natural to try out Allan's which is close to where we live in Pickering. I feel the same way about this location as I did up north. Yes, it is smaller than the Loblaws store but I prefer the smaller store anyway. The service is great and although I wish the prices were a little lower (give us more sale items), the PC Plus program does help. If there is one area that needs improvement it would be making sure that product is replaced quickly especially if it's a sale item. I now do most of my shopping at Independent Grocer both up north and down in the city. I would recommend this store to everyone. read more
