Pacific Fresh Food Mart is at least as good as it ever was, and possibly even better. I could live in this store. Let's start with the prepared foods counter, which consists of a number of warming trays for hot items, a counter with a stack of steamers for dim sums, and the typical chinese BBQ display window, with the hanging, reddish-hewed ducks and pork sides. My husband and I have found some of their take out foods to be on the bland side, but the BBQ and the bakery items are total winners. My daughter loves to get a take-out combo tray of BBQ pork (char sui) and roasted pork belly for her workday lunches. We also love to take the BBQ pork buns camping or on road trips. They make a very tasty, clean, hand-held snack. I've also tried their dim sum, and it was very good, for dim sum prepared and then held warm for a while. Their Youtiao (fried dough sticks), shao mai and har gao are always great. They've recently introduced stuffed tofu to the dim sum counter, and I will have to give that a try. The meats, from both the Halal and Non-Halal counters are excellent. The have very competitively priced meat that it always fresh. Pacific also has some great weekly specials, many from their seafood counter. Once, I bought snapper for a fraction of what it would cost in a mainstream grocery store. I've had their lobsters and crabs too: all excellent. Now, moving to the produce aisles, you will find a vast assortment of exotic fruits (what else should I call them? are Dragonfruits and Mangosteen exotic??? Or am I indulging in Orientalism). This section of the store smells beautiful, fragrant with ripe fruit. The produce aisles also boast a copious selection of Chinese greens, such as Yu Cai and Snow Pea Tips, which the regular grocery stores do not carry. Finally, the dry goods aisles offer many good deals on all sorts of things, and is a great source for all the chinese and japanese sauces that you could ever wish for. It's such a pleasure to have this wonderful supermarket so close to home! read more

Solid Asian grocers in a pinch if you're in the Pickering area. It's located across the mall and is fairly easy to find parking. If you're looking for Chinese ingredients specifically, it's a bit limited. You'll find most of what you might be looking for, but I feel like they don't carry a lot of the popular brands that we're looking for. I think they support really a wide variety of Asian necessities, so it's more geared for variety. If I want something in particular, I pretty much never find it here, or I find a weird brand I haven't tried. It's a really clean store and well organized. Staff are super friendly. The hot food table has a few options, plus there's a sushi stand, but I think the food is just so-so. We've not quite enjoyed the quality there, but I think it's fair to say that most of these types of eateries are not the best. They make everything in a large batch, and while some flavours hint at authenticity, the quality is quite meh. Again, great place to go for your basic necessities and pricing is fair. read more

There's a sushi stand making maki rolls, sashimi and hand rolls. There's fresh seafood and meat stands. This my go to supermarket when I need to fill my fridge and freezer. read more

I come here pretty often to grab fresh produce like jalapenos, green onions and black kale. (this is one of the very few grocery stores that carry black kale) they have a butcher shop and a hot counter as well. The Hot Counter has great lunch specials and at the end of the day they discount all of the hot food after 6pm daily. I also found that they carry a great selection of flowers and orchids at this location for a really good price. read more

Pacific Fresh Foods to the rescue again! Whenever I don't feel like cooking, it's great to live close enough to Pacific to grab something from their food court. For only CDN$10.99 I can get a combo meal (rice or noodles, choice of two items, and choice of soup or a drink). It's enough for two meals! This time around, I chose to have their veggie fried rice, honey garlic spareribs, fish fillet, and crab egg drop soup. While it's not quite restaurant quality food, it's pretty good. It's hard to beat all the options they have and the value they offer. In addition, they also have some dim sum items and really good Chinese BBQ, albeit a bit pricey. This store only hire Chinese and it does not properly reflect the community or it's customers within Pickering. Most of the vegetables are prepackaged in-store making it difficult for individual living alone to buy one of two items. They don't allow you to cut items like Jamaican yams(all other Caribbean stores allows your to buy only what you want), everything that is imported from Jamaica is overpriced. They resell returned breads, repackage ROTTEN fruits and vegetables at a marked down price. The meat area smells really BAD. Their customer service rating deserves a -5. read more

There are so many grocery stores along Kingston Road in Pickering, I don't know how they compete! They are Chinese owned and have a lot of Asian grocery needs, not just Chinese. They also seem to have an emphasis on Caribbean goods too. It occupies the space where Home Outfitters used to be across from Pickering Town Center. They have lots of veggies from all over including some exotic fruits I've never heard of. The butcher's counter offers halal meats. They also had a huge selection of cuts that were packaged from the counter. I saw entire lamb of legs, sheep's heads, and cow's feet to name a few. Moving on to the bakery, they offer some cupcakes and slices that are made in house but they also carry La Rocca cakes as well. This store also has a hot food section that dishes out Chinese BBQ, hot dinner entrees that you can order by the container, and dim sum dishes as well. We were there later on in the evening when they were packaging some of the BBQ and putting it out for sale. They didn't seem to be discounted though. On the side of the hot counter is a small counter to get bubble tea and juice. While it appears mainly to be for take-out, they have a small seating section with some tables where you can enjoy your fresh meal. It was an interesting store to browse through for sure. A Chinese supermarket with cheap food options? Why not? A relatively new supermarket in Pickering, one that tries to rival blue sky supermarket little bit down the road. This is a Chinese supermarket which also has take-out options at your disposal. I decided to go here with my girlfriend to get some groceries for home. We were pleasantly surprised to find out that they also have options for you to buy take out. They have a hot bar, a bakery with fresh bread, and a sushi area to take out some fresh sushi. The grocery area is like a typical Chinese supermarket - where you can get fresh fruits and veggies for a cheap price compared to the other supermarket chains. The selection is quite good and anything you are looking to find they should have as well. After getting groceries we decided to get some takeout as well as we were quite hungry after shopping. They have a pretty good selection for food but when we tried it it is nothing spectacular. For the price of the meal though you cannot go wrong. A meal for two including a drink we probably paid about 10 bucks. They have a lot of options such as dim sum, rice combo's, and several meat options. If you don't mind eating food that is a little bit older, probably a few hours old, they also pack up some leftovers that you can purchase for a discounted price. If you visit them probably around an hour before closing they pack up any food that was not purchased during the day, such as bread, and will sell it for about a dollar or 2. Which is an absolutely steal. Mind you, don't expect gourmet bread or anything like that. Overall this grocery is very well-run, with a lot of options for you to not only get groceries but have take-out options as well. This is probably my new go to supermarket in Pickering. read more

They were good in the beginning, but now seem a bit sloppy. I am a bit concerned about their meat. I saw them crating a bloody pile of big beef bones through the store, right in front of the customers. It was a real turnoff. Also I tried their chicken drumsticks on sale once and every drumstick had deep bruise marks on the leg. I can't imagine how much pain those chickens were in. I don't see this on meat I get in other groceries. I don't even dare even look at the poor live fish in their fish market. read more

This is one of 2 asian markets in Pickering and the closest to my house. The two seem to be in a battle against each other, so you can get some really nice sales if you watch their flyers. The store isn't huge (in a former Home Outfitters) but is a decent size. Parking is always a problem there as they really don't have enough parking for the number of people who shop there. The produce is mostly good, but watch the fruit as they will make up bags that look OK from what they have left after tossing the bad stuff, but it isn't real fresh and can spoil quickly. Fruit is the most prone to this. Stay away from the beef as it is usually poor quality and quite tough. I got suckered by a sale on rib eye steaks once and they were horrible. The chicken is OK and usually a good price as is the fish. The prepared food is pretty good and if you wait until 7-7:30pm they will mark it all down to get it all sold before closing. Don't eat the sushi. Just witnessed the worker cutting the salmon coughing and having stuff come out of his mouth while cutting the fish. He left the counter to wipe his mouth but did NOT wash his hands before cutting the fish again. (Fish is cut without gloves). Brought to the attention of the manager who was frankly not interested. 1 Star for customer service counter only. Other areas are helpful and friendly. Every time I go to there I see people arguing with them and they argue right back and never to give the customer right even if the store is wrong. Today I experienced the same and they made me feel like a thief. This store needs to put people experienced in customer service. They lack proper customer skills. read more

Update: Pacific has a good selection of ethnic foods, produce, spices, meat and seafood (including shucked Fanny Bay oysters!). BBQ has definitely improved, worth a try. Other prepared foods are handy for a quick Grab and Go meal. Conveniently open on holidays. All in all a very welcome addition to Pickering. read more
