Brought my gaming laptop in for water damage, minor but enough to disrupt the booting process resulting in it getting stuck at the bios screen. Though I didnt catch him the first time I called, he was quick to call back and after inquiring he gave me a brief explanation of what he suspected was going on. He offered a free diagnosis as well as a guarantee that no matter the work he did on it, if the computer didn't work there would be zero charge. Quoted me a little over a hundred dollars for a thorough ultrasonic cleaning which seems fair since it's a time intensive process best left to specialists. He discovered that my ssd and WiFi/bluetooth card had been affected by the water and while the ssd would need replacement, the WiFi card worked just fine after cleaning. He promised me that if I had any problems with the WiFi or Bluetooth he would replace the card at ZERO cost which is above and beyond. I bought and sent the new ssd to his place and after a week it was ready to pick up (he initially quoted a couple days but warned me that he already had many other customers projects going at the time, so along with the extra work outside of the original scope that was just fine) Throughout the whole process he was very friendly and communicative about his findings while doing the repair. I got my laptop back clean, tested, with the same ssd I had bought and working the same as it had before. That's a win in my book. Total cost of labor came out to 200 which really isn't bad. Remember this is specialist work and you should weigh the price of repairs against the price of replacement, not just what you are hoping to spend. I spilled coffee on an old MacBook Pro, and it could no longer charge. Apple would fix it for about half the price of a new computer, and I'd lose the data on the disk. Derrell fixed a couple frazzled leads, replaced the battery, and got it up and running -- for a very fair price. Considering how important this was to me, I even felt like he undercharged me. When I had a subsequent problem that he could diagnose but not fix, he sent me to another (unaffiliated) location that was indeed able to fix the issue. PC display randomly stopped working and couldn't figure it out with my own troubleshooting. I had a problem where my PC was stuck in bios settings after an update followed by a cpu swap. After 2+ hours of troubleshooting and assistance from both my father who used to work in tech, and my older brother who's more knowledgeable than I was, I took my PC down the street to Derrell where he was able to fix the problem and get everything back up and running in less than 15 minutes. It turned out the problem stemmed from the bios needing to be moved to a legacy version instead of the default that it was on. The job ended up being completely free of charge since it fell under his "no fix, no fee" policy. Where do I begin. First, I want to state that I have no idea how this man has any positive reviews. My only assumption is that they are fake. This has been the single worst customer service experience of my life. I went to Derrell's because of the great reviews he had, even though it was a little out of the way. I brought a bunch of devices for him to repair. iPhone 3 and 5, iPad 2, Amazon Kindle, Galaxy s7 edge and a couple other devices including my dell laptop that has been crashing occasionally and had a couple boot errors, but otherwise has been running perfectly. I explained that the laptop was the most important because I am currently looking for work and all of my documents were on it. He told me he wasn't sure he could repair the phones, but would run some tests on the laptop. He actually messaged me the next day telling me the laptop was booting fine and gave me some instructions he thought might help. So far, so good. The next day, he messaged me saying that if the laptop passed his hard drive test, he would just clean it out (air dust it) and call it good. When I came to pick up the laptop, he mentioned that the hard drive test had failed in a couple sectors, but would be ok to use and that it might fail in a month or a year. It was hard to tell. At that point, I told him to just order a new solid state hard drive and that I would drop back off the laptop when the hard drive arrived and when the rest of my devices were repaired. This is the point that his customer service fell off a cliff. I asked him about the other devices he had. He handed me back all of the devices saying he was unable to repair any of them other than the iPad and one of the phones. Hmmm ok, not a good sign, but I'll gladly take them back and take them to a competent repair person. Mind you, I didn't say that to him. So I went home and waited. And waited. And waited. I didn't hear a word from him for 10 straight days. I messaged him asking about the other devices and the status of the hard drive order. I also informed him that the laptop was crashing every 20 minutes and sometimes immediately after booting up, and asking if I could drop it back off. He replied that he would get back to me shortly. So I waited. And waited. I don't know what shortly means to him, but to me in means a few hours, at most. So the next morning I message him. Yo, what's up? He informed me that none of the other devices were repaired, but asking if I wanted to drop the laptop back off because the SSD had arrived. At this point, I wanted to let him know I wasn't happy. I told him I was surprised he had high ratings in a few places and that his customer service skills were lacking. I also let him know that my computer was in worse shape than I had left it to him in. In addition to the crashing, which I do not blame on him, the internal speakers were rattling inside and were effectively unusable now, which I do blame on him. I was direct, but not impolite. His response? "So did you want to stop by today? Let me know because I have multiple errands and appointments today." Umm, ok? I guess we're not acknowledging customer's complaints. I informed him that I would be by to pick up my devices, "shortly." I also told him I planned on sharing my negative experience online, so others weren't duped by his positive reviews. His response was some nonsensical attempt to shift the blame onto me and a condescendingly worded excuse that the speaker problem must have been there all along and he would show me why so I had a "hands-on" understanding of the problem. Ummm, no thanks. He asked me to call him so we weren't messaging back and forth. I couldn't help myself and told him that I would call him back...you guessed it, "shortly. He tells me that he doesn't allow "random pop-ups" at his office, which by the way, is his house. He explained that the original "shortly response from him was an auto response he had set up on messenger and that he was at work when I messaged him. I told him that I was going to have my friend pick up the devices because I didn't want him to say some stupid stuff to my face (I should mention that I have left out some of the annoying comments he made to me along the way in the interest of brevity. I know, too late.) He then told me to provide him with an address so he can ship the items to me. Uhhhhh, no thanks. First of all, in no way do I want this man to have my address. Secondly, I do not want to wait another ten days for him to decide to send the devices he's had for ten days already and hasn't touched. Lastly, I felt this was a final dig at me. He already knew I was going to take my case online and my thought is he wanted to passive-aggressively make me pay for that transgression. So as it stands, I am refusing to provide him with my address. My laptop is in worse shape for letting Darrell put his hands on it and I am going to have to go to court to get them back. read more

DO NOT RECOMMEND for complicated fixes! Last September, I spilled orange juice on my laptop. Since I'm a student at SDSU and he's close to campus, I gave him my laptop to fix. He said he would switch out the keyboard and that it would take a couple of days. It ended up taking THREE MONTHS. Even throughout the three months, he would rarely respond and when he did, would say "sorry for the delayed response, it should be done soon" when it obviously wasn't. I didn't write a bad review for him back then because he was very generous since it took so long to fix. Flash forward to three weeks ago, the same laptop out of nowhere stopped working. I took it to another laptop repair store and they said that MULTIPLE screws were placed in the wrong places and that one had dislodged and was laying on top of the logic board. I am extremely disappointed because the cause of this malfunction the second time around is fully Derrell's fault. read more

He was very forthcoming, and I'm going to be recommending him for anyone who needs help with computer issues. Full disclosure: I went to Tech2U last time I had an issue with this very same computer. That experience wasn't terrible - I did get the issue fixed - but I was very frustrated because I expressed 'This is an issue with my keyboard' and the individual working didn't believe me, messed up my keyboard drivers for a week and a half and then FINALLY ordered a replacement part, which took another week and a half or so. Derrell got a computer issue I had that I felt was way worse done in 5 days (really only 3 business days! I brought it in on a Saturday!) and was kind, patient, informative, and caring the whole way through. He listened to my computer's symptoms and what I had to say, and responded appropriately. I called 3 other places and very specifically explained the issue. Everyone wouldn't even give me a reasonable time frame or narrow down the cost. I had labor costs from $150-$300! They just said to bring it in and it could take 2-3 days before they'd know. What?! Derrell had me bring it right over and it took him less than an hour to diagnose the issue. Derrell went above and beyond to revive my computer and copy the hard drive. My PC has been on its last leg for the past year or two. I am a graduate student and all my coursework is online so I use my computer constantly and for everything. Low and behold Tuesday night my computer completely blacked out on me after trying to help my parents play a video that was on a USB. Panicked and distraught I was convinced I just lost all my coursework that I needed in order to graduate this coming December 2019. I was sure I would have to call my college and explain the situation and tell them I was foolish enough to not listen to them about saving ALL of my coursework to an external hard drive or another source in case of this exact situation. I tried running basic repair over the phone with my boyfriend, a computer programmer, but there was nothing that could be done except take it in. Mind you this was at about 9:30pm on a Tuesday. My dad began to search through Yelp and happened to come upon Derrell's page. What was shocking was that he was still open until 10:30pm! I called him and left a message, explaining the situation and telling him that this was basically my life for the past two years and it was all slipping through my fingers. He called me back immediately and due to the dire circumstances encouraged me to come and drop off my computer when it would already be well past his closing time. I drove as fast as I could to his shop and felt even more relieved meeting him. He was calm, collected and after a minute of looking things over assured me he should be able to at least extract the hard drive and I should have most of my work.He was kind and told me he would do whatever he could, even offering to fix it to the best of his ability. After a bit of talking he determined he could basically put a band-aid on it and keep it working but getting a newer computer would be best. He also told me that if he couldn't fix it, he wouldn't charge anything. And even then his rates were amazing. Derrell is kind, competent and reliable. It's now Thursday night and I have everything back. I have a copy of the hard drive on a USB. He was able to extract about 95% of it, but that's better than nothing. But more importantly he was able to slap on that band-aid fix to my computer to keep it going until my new one comes in.
