The tours and beer here are fantastic. They have a bunch of beer that you can only get here, kind of "exclusive" beer. Tour includes 1 free beer and lasts around 45 minutes. Our guide was awesome. Definitely knew his stuff, mixed in a few jokes, and overall was just really nice. You get to see quite a bit of the facility, and learn how the brewing, packaging, etc. take place. History lesson also included. Oh yeah, and the tour is $5. What? Honestly who authorized that. Probably a great idea as people come for the tour and buy beer and gifts to take back as the tour itself was so affordable. It worked for me. I bought a glass and almost bought some other stuff. They tell you to be there 15 minutes before the tour starts, but your fine showing up at start time. I would recommend getting there early as they give you some free taste beers, but don't sweat it if you show up 2 minutes before your tour. Overall, awesome experience. A must for anyone visiting. Only thing I regret is not getting a taste of the Black Mirror. It's one of the beers they only serve at the brewery. Grrr. read more

If you're a beer aficionado, this is a fantastic tour. I am ashamed to say I live near Bend and have never done the tour before or bothered to taste any Deschutes Beer. The price was right!! (I mean, $15 per person including a can of beer plus a couple tastings?), the beer was good and the guide and information spot on. Too much information actually, so he had to speak pretty rapidly and it was factory noisy so I feel like I missed a lot. BUT, that just means I won't mind going back to do the tour again if friends come to town. Two of us had to wait for one of our party who had an appointment afterwards, so we went into downtown to the Deschutes Brew Pub (after a fortifying Expresso) and spent an hour and a half tasting and talking to other patrons. Fun Bend daytime activity. Deschutes facility is as good as it gets. However, if you've been to one brewery tour, you've been to them all. Put aside an hour for the tour. Before the tour, they'll give you a few tasters from the bar, then at the start of the tour, they'll give you a whole beer to enjoy during the tour. My honest recommendation: take the tour if you've never been on a brewery tour. Make reservations ahead of time. If you're familiar with how beer is made and packaged, skip the tour and enjoy the bar at the brewery, where they showcase their best and new releases, sometimes even experimental brews only found here at the brewery. read more

I loved visiting Deschutes! It was one of the highlights of my 3 night trip to Bend. Disclaimer: my husband Matt does business with the brewery. I tagged along when he visited his customer so I could check out the tasting room. However, his business has nothing to do with my experience as a customer. The tasting room was big and beautiful with a lot of merchandise. There are 8 beers on tap and you can try four 4 ounce samples when you come to visit. It was fairly slow on a Friday before noon, so I spent some time chatting with Bobbie who was talking me through the beers I tried. She was so knowledgeable and friendly I really enjoyed meeting her. I tend to drink light beer, but I found two beers that I loved. The River Ale, which is summer weight but they will make it year round. It was light and refreshing and the lightest beer available. The Chainbreaker IPA was also a standout. It reminded me of a lighter hef with a clove taste. The next day we returned with two friends and took the brewery tour. It took about 50 minutes and was a great mix of information about how they make beer and the history of the brewery. Over my two visits I bought two six packs of River Ale, one six pack of Chainbreaker IPA, a baby onsie, a boat key floatie and a hat. They also had growlers for sale, I was tempted but opted to stick to six packs since I will not be in the neighborhood for refills often :) I have been wine tasting at dozens of winery's, and this was only my second time tasting at a brewery, it was super fun and laid back. A little cramped due to their swag being stuffed into every possible open space. Limited seating options as a result. Great prices on their barrel aged projects (i.e. cheaper than bottle shops!). Staff are friendly and helpful and let you try anything and everything before committing to a full pour. However, the older lady working there is pretty rude and got annoyed with me for asking very basic questions about their draft options, like she just wanted me to hurry up and order something and leave even though they weren't busy. After she sort of answered my question she literally said ok and walked away. A couple minutes later an older dude helped me out. I can see that it's a fun activity. But after being at McMeniman's High Street in Eugene which was warm, friendly where I loved their ciders, sours and lagers, this was just barely ok. The beerista was nice enough but not interested in what I liked and neither did she seem to know about what was being poured. I had their grapefruit rose cider and something else not memorable. Didn't finish either nor did I feel welcomed to try others. It felt very corporate and stale. I'm glad others like it but it's not for me. read more

I was told there were at least 16 breweries in Bend. Wow, that's impressive! So, how does one stand out over the others in such a saturated market? Simple. Make amazing beer and be friendly to your visitors. It's really that easy. Well, okay, I'm no brewer, so I have to assume making beer is hard, and making GOOD beer is quite the Herculean task. But, once you nail the formula, you keep evolving, which is what they are doing at Deschutes. I missed the tour, but that's okay; I've seen the inner workings of many a brewery. But, I stopped by the tasting room on a lovely Sunday to check out the offerings. I'm not a local, so their beers were completely 'foreign' to me. I'm happy to say, their entire team treated everyone like family. They were quick with the samples, heavy on the pours, and knowledgeable about each and every single brew on tap. I really appreciated how they were so friendly and welcoming to everybody. They treat you like family, not a customer. They clearly love what they do, and they want to share that joy with you. That's my impression anyway. I would absolutely go back if I'm in town again. I really enjoyed every single beer I tried, and I would totally bring folks back with me to share in the experience. A few days before my trip to Bend I suddenly realized one of my favorite breweries was based here. (Note: I can be a little slow sometimes). A quick check of the website showed they gave free tours, so I jumped on the very last slot left in the last tour of the afternoon I'd be in town. Score! I arrived at the brewery slightly before the tour start time and was greeted at the front of the tasting room, where I was given a visitor badge and asked to wait with others. The tour began promptly, proceeding first to the older part of the brewery (smaller tanks, where experimental batches are now run), then proceeding to the "break room" (where employees enjoy beer after work). Here we got a quick tutorial on the components of beer (water, malted barley, hops, yeast) and even got to sample some of these items (barley, hops) from jars. Being a home brewer myself, I did my best to keep my mouth shut and let others answer the basic questions posed by our friendly tour guide. We then proceeded to the larger, newer part of the brewery to review the beer-making process, step by step, starting with the mash and wort tanks, then proceeding to the fermentation tanks and bottling area. Useful signs were posted at strategic points to explain things graphically. Unfortunately, the bottling machines were not running - it would have been fun to see those in action. The final leg of the tour was a quick jaunt through upstairs hallways, where artwork of the Christmas beers from past years were displayed. All in all, about 30 minutes. Overall I thought the tour was reasonably interesting, and it was nice to see their process in action (from afar), but this was more of a "here's how you make beer" tutorial than a tour tailored for the brewery. I would have liked to learn more about the particulars here (e.g. is this the original brewery location? Do they use whole hops for all their beers? What's the beer they produce the most of? etc.). I did learn a few things: -- The brewery is partially-owned by employees, who therefore have a vested interest in company success -- Deschutes is the eighth largest craft brewery in the country (after Boston Beer, Yuengling, Sierra Nevada and others) -- They have no plans to sell out to giant beer companies as so many craft breweres have done (e.g. 10 Barrel, Lagunitas, Goose Island, Ballast Point) At the very end of the tour, we were escorted downstairs to the starting point - the tasting room, where we were given a card to fill out for four, free tastings in small glasses. Though I had already tried most of their beers previously, this was a nice chance to relax, chat with others and browse the extensive Deschutes merchandise (I bought a t-shirt). The only downside was that this segment felt WAY too rushed for me - we were told the tasting room was closing in 10 minutes, so we had to make our beer picks quickly and drink them down quickly too. The employees here were all extremely friendly, and I enjoyed the tour for the most part. But if I were to do this again someday, I'd pick an earlier slot so I could lounge and browse a little longer in the tasting room. Some things are best not rushed. read more

So great! We didn't do a tour and we are bummed. The staff are amazing as well as the beer. Lots of merch to choose from if you want something other than beer to take with you. They sell growlers but if you have one bring it to fill up you will not be disappointed! If we move to bend I want to work here! Lots of people from all over here and welcomed. Watch out, these guys give VERY GENEROUS samples. Definitely enough to make you feel something (and it's probably on purpose). Another pro tip: if you want to do the tour MAKE A RESERVATION. My ignorant self somehow thought it would be possible to walk in on a tour as it was a random Tuesday but they were fully booked up through the weekend! Make an online reservation before you come! Otherwise great tasting room! A plethora choices ranging from their iconic black butte porter to the fresh squeezed IPA, nitro, lager and perhaps other different rotating drafts by the time you arrive. The bartenders are very friendly and give good recommendations based on what you like! Took the tour and wow, it was best I've been to! Our tour guide Lindsay was funny and knowledgeable. The facilities were impressive and I liked the paintings in the hall of fame at the end that were chosen for their labels. We got a free tasting of four different beers plus a beer to take along for the tour. My husband just HAD to put on a beard net to add to his quirkiness. It was a pleasant surprise to be offered a beer to drink while on the tour. I opted for the Lil Squeezy Juicy Ale which was excellent. The tour itself was engaging and informative even to the point that some fellow attendees were on their third one! That is some dedication right there. After the tour we went to the gift shop/tasting room where I enjoyed a flight of samples and bought lots of swag for myself and friends back home. Excellent brewery with an excellent brewery tour! I don't even like beer and I still had a lot of fun touring this place. My husband and I did the brewery tour during our visit to Bend, Oregon back in June. I'd done a brewery tour before elsewhere and this was much more comprehensive. We toured several different rooms and areas of the brewery (it is quite large). Our tour guide was friendly and knowledgeable. It was pretty hands on and we got to see and feel the different beer materials too. You can get complimentary beer tastings in their main bar area. They also have Deschutes brand clothing and other souvenirs in their bar area. My husband and I both got some shirts. We didn't actually visit the brewery restaurant, which is located at a different location. But the brewery itself was fun and probably a must-do if you are visiting Bend, Oregon. read more

For years we kept meaning to take this brewery tour, and we finally did! It was worth the wait. It's easy to reserve and pay online. The group tour was $10 each, but you got the tour and 2 free beers of your choice. One beer to walk around on the tour with, and one in the Tasting Room. Since moving to Coeur d' Alene we find ourselves driving through Bend often on our way to and from California. Deschutes has been one of my favorite breweries since I was old enough to know the difference between good beer and crap! The man has wanted to make this stop every time we pass through so this trip we decided to give Bend a couple of days to take it in. We scheduled our tour online then had to call to be sure we were both added to the list (they made an exception to allow 16 on this tour). We arrived a few minutes early and got a sample in the tasting room before we were escorted through the brewery by our tour guide, Jeff Wilson. The tour only lasts 45 minutes but Jeff has too much passion and commitment to turn down a question and spread some of his infinite knowledge. Our tour lasted right over an hour and we had a blast! Jeff was attentive, down to earth, knowledgeable and truly loved his job. They say if you do what you love you don't work a day in your life; if this is true then Jeff has been lucky enough to not 'work' the entire time he has been with the company. I think all businesses should have someone who is this excited to work for them. We not only learned about the beer crafting process but about a second brewery opening on the east coast to better meet demand. We also we informed about their many different sustainability practices. The spent grain from crafting is purchased by a local cattle farm who raises grass and spent grain cows to sell the best product possible. The Deschutes pub down the road purchases all of their beef from that same cattle company. The malt used during beer crafting is sold to a local company who makes fertilizer for local farmers and not to mention that the brewery has made an oath to put a BILLION gallons of water back into river each year. I was turned on to the Black Butte special 26 which I have yet to taste. Each year black butte puts out an anniversary porter of sorts and it is only available in 22oz bottles of epicness. We purchased 2 of these bottles to enjoy at home at a later time ($17 per bottle). Had the chance to try the Stoic for the first time and my oh my, so many favors that mix perfectly on the tongue and down the hatch. Wound up with a 22oz bottle of that for $17 also and will enjoy that next week when we move into our new home. I would do the tour again and again to learn as much as possible as I felt like I was only able to retain such a small amount of awesome informations. Heads up, the Jeff fellow I spoke of rarely does tours anymore as he has some pretty important positions within the company. Great tour, great tasting room, great beer samples. The prices in the gift shop are reasonable so nearly everybody walks away with something. They can handle crowds very well since on the day we went they added additional tours on the fly and we only had to wait a few minutes after arriving a half hour early in order to make the first scheduled tour! I've always been a huge fan of their black butte porter back when I lived in Portland, but they have plenty of others I fell in love with after tasting them. And their tastes are healthy pours. A must for any visitor to Bend! read more

On every brewery tour, there is always some Bro Dude that smiles a douchey smiley from under their Nike Golf hat and utters how much he'd want to work at a brewery and make beer every day. Alas, on the Deschutes Brewery, I was that Bro Dude. Deschutes has a loyal following and a loyal employee base. The company treats both very well, and that is reflected on the tour. Compared to many other brewery tours, this one seems like a particularly intimate look at both the process and the people behind the process. It has the same vibe of modesty and pride that the whole state of Oregon seems to have. As such, it is a must see when you're in Bend. read more

Came to Bend on a whim after everyone I know has up talked this city, so I naturally wanted to check it out. After walkin downtown, I had totally remembered the greatest beer brewing company is in Bend, Deschutes! So after I crossed the river I had gasped at how nice the exterior was, and right in a beautiful setting. After learning the brewery does free tours I was more than ready for my tour! I showed up to be greeted by a very friendly staff workin that day. After browsing the retail shop it was time for the tour! Mark our guide led us on a very fun & knowledgeable tour. Seeing where my favorite beer is made is quite a treat. The tour lasted about 45 minutes, and upon return back to the retail store I purchased some of the new Black Butte XXV. Fantastic tour and fantastic location. We booked a trip here for hour honeymoon and as giant fans of Deschutes, we were excited to see where the magic happens and were not disappointed. The gift store/tasting room is spacious and well organized and all those wonderful folks behind the counter were really quite helpful from start to finish. The tour itself was informative, personable and wide ranging. From the giant vats of yeast, ready to be pitched to the vault of hops and all the way down to the Laverne and Shirley like bottling lines (note: it is now done by machines, not by a pair of wacky friends), it was really a great way to get behind the curtain at one of our favorite breweries. If I had any complaint, it was just that we weren't there on a bottling day (we went on a Saturday), so we didn't get to see the entire operation up and running, but rather in a dormant state until business kicks up on the following Monday. Deschutes is one of my favorite breweries. If you are in the Bend area, a visit to their brewery is a must. They offer free tours daily which end in their sampling room. Each tour participant is given four free samples of any beer on tap your tummy desires. Yummy!! The tour is given by a staff member and is quite informative. You learn about how they brew their beer as well as the company. They are very involved in giving back to the community, which makes me love their beer even more!
