A cozy bar, nestled down below the street. Dark, intimate, with lots of cool vibes. Awesome taps, with the old school pump action. Sir John Falstaff stares you down as you enjoy your bev.

Stopped in for a pint after we go to Bend. The Cellar was a great unexpected find. They specialize in cast aged ales and it shows. Less carbonated that more common beer, but eminently drinkable. I had their Scottish Ale which was well balanced and smooth. I don't drink IPA's and appreciate a brewery that has a great selection of non-IPA beer. They also have some imported versions as well. My wife scored me an Irnbru from their cold case for later which was an unexpected surprise. The pub area is not big, but has a great British pub ambiance and the staff knowledgeable and attentive. My only regret was that I didn't have more time to sit and enjoy a couple of pints.

I had recently listened to a podcast interview with the owners of Porter Brewing Company about their cask ale program, so this was high on the list to try. Their main brewery is in Redmond, but they recently closed the taproom for visits so as of this writing The Cellar is the only location to get their beer. Cask Ales are traditional English beers kept in metal barrels, or casks, in a wooden rack and tipped at an angle. They are not carbonated like beers you may be used to (but are not "flat"); they use gravity or hand pumps to get the beer into your glass. They usually pour smooth. This is an excellent place to experience traditional English styles and its serving method. Due to the nature of the pour, you can't get these canned or to go, it's a must-visit and drink there place. As the name implies, this is in the cellar, with a clearly marked staircase on the street level going down. The two servers, one it was their first day, were immediately welcoming and friendly to explain the establishment and their beer. The place feels a little cold yet cozy; seating areas are eclectic with wooden chairs, stools, and various sized tables. Lighting is kept dark. We chose to sit in the little side room, with stained glass windows and fun ceiling. We each got a flight of 4 beers, most of going with the harder to find styles. Prices were reasonable, especially for the quality and rarity of finding these in the US. If you're in Bend looking for unique stops for beer, look no further than Porter Brewing / The Cellar.

The Cellar is a small, intimate outlet of Porter Brewing (a Redmond brewery) operating out of a below-ground level space in downtown Bend that specializes in cask-conditioned beers. Look for the stairs descending from the north corner of Wall and Oregon. It's a unique and welcome addition to the Bend beer scene. - As I mentioned, it's small. So small that I imagine a lot of folks make their way down the steps only to find no available seat (I'm speculating). I tend to patronize bars during early afternoon hours so I've not had an issue so far. Speaking of steps, mobility-challenged patrons will have an issue just getting to the front door. - They have a bar with a handful of stools, a long table against one wall, a high-top in the middle, a small table against the other wall, a cozy two-seater table in the corner and a semi-enclosed table in the back which would be good for a group. - Full size beers poured here - imperial pints, not the 14 or 16 oz offerings of most places. - Food offerings comprise pies, meat pies, although a veggie version is included. I haven't tried any of them yet. - The pub is very English. The beer, the ambiance, even the Shut the Box game you'll find over by the entrance. And there's a cool Shove Ha'penny game hanging on the entrance wall (I plan to make both games in my woodshop.) - Prices are good; service is Bend friendly.

Real Ale is an unknown to most Americans. Tasting a beer without carbonation may be new, but it's worth effort. What a rarity! Very hard to find any place with dedication to real ales so I feel fortunate to find this gem. If you're into Bud/Miller/Coors, don't come here. If you want to explore nuance, come and enjoy. This place is a prime example of what beer wad for generations (and still is in parts of the world that respect history)

This is truly a hidden gem, you can get a flight of their four housemade brews and an excellent meal of their cottage pie with mushy peas. I highly recommend this spot and will be back!

My wife and I are connoisseurs of cask ales. Most breweries simply do not have cask ales. The few that do generally only have one on tap at a time. It is a very niche way to drink beer in America, while it is the popular way to drink beer in England. I don't think it has gained much attraction in America because of poor marketing. It can be described as room temperature, mildly carbonated beer. In fact, it should be described as mild, drinkable, creamy beer that gives off a different flavor profile than heavily carbonated, ice-cold beers. The carbonation occurs naturally in the cask rather than with added gas or additional sugars after fermentation. While only a fraction of US breweries have one beer on cask, The Cellar had eight! We were very impressed. We tried to give the crown for most cask ales in the US to the brewer pouring ales at The Cellar, but he mentioned that there was a bar in Seattle, the Capercaillie, that actually had more. We enjoyed the REG the Great, Best Bitter, and the 1772, English Porter. We could've stayed for another but we had other places to explore in Bend. If we ever return to Bend, of all the establishments we sampled in the city, The Cellar is the one we would sample again.

Great time here. Had a variety of English options. Porters, ales, and ciders. Learned a lot from bartender. Great vibe inside, I would recommend to all. Pot pies were amazing!

    Bar. Very warm n cozy.

So if you're hankering for the mac n cheese or shrimp n grits or veg burger or any of the menu items, after today they are history. I started eating at The Drake in their first week of business and had many, many, many meals there over the years but things change and so, it seems, has the popularity of The Drake. Now the good news. The new owners are a trio and one of them is also one of the owners of the inestimable Ken's Artisan Pizza in Portland that opened its' Bend location last year. (Go! Even if you have to stand in line for 45 minutes like I did.) The first news of this ownership change was that they would keep the name and current focus of The Drake. But local television news reports that after The Drake closes today it will be reimagined with a new name and design and menu. The opening for the new place is currently said to be Memorial Day weekend. I don't live in Bend anymore but there is still a family home there and so I visit on occasion and knowing a "Ken's" owner is involved in the new enterprise may make me brave the wicked-bad downtown parking to try this new place. The temperature of the room was good, no drafts. 3. The night light also goes on, when all the lights are off. That's a bonus, because we always forget to bring our night light. 4.
