Today, I had a "discussion" with Ryan Gonzalez at Desert Automotive that I've used for automotive repairs in Las Cruces for several years. I was concerned about a sound that I hear for a minute or so at start-up which the repair shop said is "probably" the air conditioner compressor belt/pulley that I had replaced in 2022. The "good" news is the item is under warranty, but the labor is not - (Approximately $550). The shop said I need to replace my rear brakes (but said I had done so less than 10,000 miles ago and blamed it on my "bad breaking habits"). After "discussing" the issue and addressing me in a condescending and demeaning tone, he realized in the records I had only the rotors replaced. He accused me of bad habits when it comes to braking, but since I have a manual transmission I ALWAYS use the gears to slow down and then apply the brakes. (I had no access to the records as I keep them in the car). (Cost is approximately $550.) The final issue is when we discussed the shop labor rate which is $150/hour, which is somewhat inflated for my location. His stance was "I'm not going to argue with you." I replied that it wasn't my intent to argue but to get an accurate and reasonable quote and for his records of past service to be accurate. I picked up my car and drove it home. I'll be looking for a new mechanic sans the condescending attitude toward women and reasonable charges for the area where I live... read more

Go somewhere else to be frank Waste of time and money is all to be had here. My wife had her truck fixed here they told her two week max. Unfortunately due to poor flow of communication to constant excuses. One month it took, now it would have been helpful to know the mechanic was out due to injury but no communication the truck was not worked on in said time. The manager said the only reason he "helped" us out was because I am in the military. Sorry but all customers should get equal treatment to compete the job they are getting paid for they're customers should be aware of this ridiculous circus we had to endure. We were completely shocked at their lack of professionalism, we saw excellent reviews and others recommendations to go here. Took our car in for a check-up and they put in a used battery (according to AAA who had to come out with a new one for us). We moved to Las Cruces this exceptionally hot summer of 2023 and our poor Subaru suffered with weird electrical problems. We twice brought in our car for repair. Once they found no problem and charged practically nothing. The second time they did find a problem and the repair was $300 which is a lot less than at the dealership we used to frequent. These guys went above and beyond. Wish I could give more stars. As I was driving through Las Cruces I noticed a new noise that I thought I should get checked out. I searched for "mechanics nearby" and these guys had tons of great reviews on Google. I called requesting a same day appointment as I had to leave town that evening. Ira, the manager, answered and told me he couldn't promise anything but to come over and they would see what they could do. As I pulled up 10 minutes later "Champ" immediately jumps into the passenger seat and we take a drive around the block to see if he can diagnose where the noise is coming from. He has some ideas and we drive back for him to have a closer look. It's an older van and so it turns out there are a couple of parts that need replacing. Ira, possibly sensing my lack of automotive knowledge, actually sat down with me and explained what is wrong and how they will fix it (without being patronizing!). He brought up the parts on his computer to show me the cost and broke down labor time/costs so that all charges were completely transparent. He recommended getting the main job fixed immediately but that the other job could wait a little while if I didn't want to do it now. No hard sell. As a girl driving a 24 year old van solo across the country, that knows nothing about engines, I am at the mercy of mechanics. I immediately felt at ease here - which is a first for me and mechanics. A few hours later my van is fixed, noise is gone, and I'm back on my way. You won't find better, more reliable, friendly and honest service anywhere! Trust me, I've had my share of the other kind of mechanics. A huge thank you to Ira, Champ and Cody!! Im a 22yr retired veteran, recently moved here from out of state and was having problems with my 2014 Jeep to over heating. Took it to desert auto (because I saw it was veteran owned) where Ryan said he knew exactly what the problem was....he changed some sensors, charged me and gave my Jeep back. The next day I was still having the same problems. I brought it back again to Ryan....this time he tells me that there are other sensors that need to be changed....this time he charged me over $800 and charged me an extra 4% for using a debit card. The next day my Jeep is still over heating....this time Ryan tells me that I need a new engine...$8200 and I need to put down $6000 to order the engine. He also tells me that I will need to get a money order to avoid getting charged the 4% for using my card. I go and get the money order drop it off to Ryan and then all of the sudden my remaining balance is $3500. When I asked where the extra $1000 came from I was told it was for an oil change and taxes. In summary....I took my Jeep to Ryan because my Jeep to Ryan 3 times (each time he would tell me it was fixed) for the same problem. Each time I brought it in I got charged more than the previous visit to fix the same problem. They failed to show me the actual out the door cost for the new engine and waited until I paid the deposit to show me. Also, the have a credit card machine that charges you 4% on top of whatever your being charged. I got to NM last November and my Jeep has been in the shop most of the time since. Don't trust that place. Never in my life have I had this problem with an auto shop. It's a shame that integrity isn't a common characteristic anymore. read more

This is a long overdue review for Desert Automotive. let me start by saying that the team there is nothing less than honest and amazing. I have a very new car with very low mileage and was having Air Conditioner issues, The air just was not blowing cold at all, there was an obvious leak and unfortunately it could not be located. The vehicle was under warranty and unfortunately the warranty company was fighting me to pay for it, even though there was an obvious mechanical failure somewhere. The shop owner along with it's leadership there did not find it right that the warranty company was treating me the way they were. Needless to say they took care of me and made sure that I was treated as a human with a problem and not just another dollar. If you have any question of where to take your car, this is the only mechanic i'll be using or recommending. I also drive from over 60 miles away to take my car there. Hopefully I don't need a mechanic that often lol but if I do,Desert Automotive is it for me. Thanks again to all of you. read more

These guys deserve 6 stars. My friend directed me to this place when my engine was having problems. When you're in the middle of a desert and a thousand+ miles from home, the last thing you need is your car having a breakdown. These guys diagnosed the problem correctly and quickly, ordered the necessary parts and fixed it within 24 hours, and they charged a reasonable price. They are knowledgeable, fair, and friendly. They do not honor their prices. They overcharge for diagnostics and do not inform you that you are being charged hourly rates on top. After diagnosing the issue they price quoted was more than the car was valued at. We paid over$400 when we were quoted $130 for diagnostics and the problem still is not fixed. The prices quoted for parts are outrageous. I contacted the manufacturer and they quoted me cheaper prices for parts if I order through them. I do not recommend. They also take a long time to diagnose without giving you information. read more

I took my Tundra in to have front end noise checked and repaired. They called and said it was ready and when I went to get it the tech said he could not hear any noises in the front end. They then charged me $89.00 for a diagnosis fee. When I drove the truck off the noise was clearly there. I will not take it back and think it was wrong to charge for something they could not even hear (supposedly). Used to be treated right when it was Don's shop but not now. read more

Great mechanics are super hard to find, and I feel blessed I found Desert Automotive after moving into the area. They are really friendly and accommodating for appointments, especially last minute or when problems arise. Better yet, they have integrity and quote fair estimates that they stick to. No surprise bills or fees. They also were able to find a coolant leak my previous mechanic couldn't find, and repaired it for a very minimal cost. I'm incredibly impressed with them. This work occurred between end of 1/2021 and end of 2/2021. 1. Got a quote from Baird Automotive 2. Baird did not provide a reasonable quote and declined to provide part brands and no mention of OEM or aftermarket. Instead was told "what's available". Wrong answer... 3. Took mediocre quote provided my Baird to Desert Automotive. Josh provided a quote after 20min based on Bairds quote. Showed me order for parts being designated for repairs but no hard copy was provided. 4. Big ticket repairs so was asked to pay part of it upfront, okay. Asked him how long repairs would take, he said two days. Said parts were in stock so I left the car there (Thursday) and said it would be ready Tuesday 5. Monday got a call from Ryan, shop manager. Stated parts were delayed and car would probably be ready till end of week or following week. Interesting...I was told parts were in stock. Ryan said parts had been order through O'Reillys. I was hoping to hear a reputable vendor but O'Reillys? I was also told they were at then mercy of the vendors... 6. Further calls from Ryan about parts not being available or not being ordered properly because they didn't fit the car, hmmm. Ryan provided a revised quote. He made suggestions which didn't sound very confident telling me to take the car to a BMW dealership to have it aligned instead and how BMWs are picky. More red flags...said he was going to compare his BMW with another BMW in the shop to compare to mine. Okay, shoot me because this shop sounds like they're learning as they go. 7. Second quote showed Duralast parts (Autozone brand). Now, Ryan is a BMW owner quoting me Autozone parts for my BMW...serious? I had to call mechanics back home to ask about these Duralast parts which they suggested I stay away from. 8. Stated he needed to get the parts from Arizona with overnight shipping which would push the repairs a couple of days and of course charged me for the overnight shipping. Did I mention I needed to go out of town for work Thursday? So by now the car has been in the shop for almost two weeks. Recall No. 4 above? 2 days turned into two weeks. 9. I contacted Ryan late Tuesday night letting him know I was not comfortable using below average parts (Duralast-Autozone) on my BMW. Part went from being Belsteins/Monroe to Duralast for some parts. At this point I knew I had made a mistake. 10. Not very many options in town and since the saying goes "leave it for mañana" the sense of urgency and craftsmanship goes out the window. 11. I've mentioned, O'Reillys and Autozone. THESE ARE THE VENDORS!? If I had known this I would have stayed clear. Also, why is El Paso not an option? Why order from AZ and OR? 12. Shocks got taken care of after back and forth emails and calls. Still no work had been fine on my car. When I finally picked up the car, the engine was smoking. I asked if the gasket and steering reservoir had been taken care of and the answer I got was not reassuring. I was a bit nervous leaving the shop and I got a sense that I would be contacting them again due to issues. 13. When I got home I checked under the hood, looked closely at the steering fluid reservoir and long and behold, it was NOT replaced. The same leak and old grease was still on the reservoir, a mark I had placed weeks earlier was still there. I emailed the photos to Ryan and he said "I think we replaced it but let me check". After a couple of hours of waiting for a call back it turns out the "Master Mechanic" hadn't done his job and was instead taking care of any other project in Deming. At this point I thought this was a fraud job and I was certain the gasket wasn't replaced. When I got a call back I was told I would be refunded $600 for the trouble so I was asked to come to the shop to swipe my card. Another inconvenience and there and then I was handed the new reservoir that was supposed to be installed. To cut the entire story short...the oil leak came back a week later. Don't think the gasket was replaced. DONT GO BACK TO DESERT AUTOMOTIVE! Go somewhere else, better if it's in El Paso! Desert Automotive was, sorry to say, the most disappointing shop. I finally took the car to get properly aligned, the gasket is being replaced in Texas, the reservoir I replaced and no other leaks were found by the new shop. One star for at least tying to make things right? read more

I took my 2003 Cadillac CTS there due to car going into limp mode. After a about a week being there they couldn't figure it out but they charged me $280 for splicing some wires and connecting a part unrelated to the problem that cost $30. Frustrated I brought it home bought a book from auto zone specifically for that car and watched YouTube videos and fixed the car myself. I replaced throttle body and cleaned out all hoses and canisters relating to the exhaust and air intake of the vehicle. It was clogged with gunk and was causing positive pressure inside crankcase also causing my valve cover gasket's to blow causing an oil leak on to my exhaust manifolds making it smoke. I'm no mechanic but after being frustrated and not being able to find a good mechanic that wasn't trying to take advantage of my situation, I was able to fix my own car, so I ask myself how does that make these mechanics at desert automotive look? I'm a very calm and easy going person. I usually over rate businesses with extra stars just because. I made an appointment a week ago for a CV axle repair. I was quoted an amount and scheduled my service. I dropped my car off the evening before trying to allow the business to have all day to work on it. 5pm came around and no call... I just assumed the work ran late... Well I call and they didn't even have the chance to look at it. Then the person working the front desk was very rude saying they closed at 5:30 only giving me 10 minutes to pick up my car while I'm still at work. The quote for the service changed twice. I was never emailed a quote. Then there was no guarantee they could even fix or see it the next day. It was an entire waste of time and I would have easily let it go--- I understand things happen but I did not deserve to be treated disrespectfully. I did not receive any effort from them to communicate to me. I will be spending my $1000 elsewhere. Poor customer service and poor communication. read more

I was working out of town in Las Cruces and after traveling all day, checking into my hotel, I turned on my car to see that it was not turning over and starting. There was a hotel guest who said to me, that's not your battery. I was panicking and decided that I needed to find a mechanic in Las Cruces, not knowing anyone. I waited in the morning and decided to call the first shop I had listed, Desert Automotive. They even offered to tow my car, but I have Triple A. They said that travelers are their priority. I had 5 appts in Las Cruces that day and mentioned it to the Josh. He gave me a loaner car to get my business done. There were several issues, my battery got drained and the timing belt was damaged. They were extremely nice, fixed my car and I was back on the road by 5:15 pm. I felt totally taken care of and I would recommend their shop and talked highly of them during the day at my accounts! It was an extremely hot September day (especially for us Northern Californians!) and the AC of our rented Camper Van went out when we were at White Sands National Monument. My husband was starting to freak out!! We got on the road and found Desert Automotive. They first appeared perplexed with our description of the problem but minutes later came back & announced it was fixed and they would charge us nothing! Turns out some varmints had chewed through some hoses to the air conditioning and rendered it inoperable.
