A WHOLE DAY OUT We visited for 8 hours, which included having dinner at Gertrude's restaurant, seeing the gardens by day and night, experiencing the "Framerate: Desert Pulse" exhibit, the evening "Pulse Party" and visiting the gift shop. If you simply came to see the gardens by day and did nothing else, you'd probably be there 2-4 hours. We purchased our tickets on-line in advance. FRAMERATE: DESERT PULSE EXHIBIT WAS WELL WORTH IT We happened to see a segment on TV about the "Framerate: Desert Pulse" exhibit and decided to spend a weekend in Phoenix so we could see it. The exhibit consists of some large screens placed around the garden showing stunning time-lapse photography of desert cacti, flowers, scenery and much more. It was nothing like we'd ever seen. There is also a large air-conditioned room with more large screens for a further sensory experience. IT'S A LARGE GARDEN! I will say the garden is quite extensive, so make sure you're wearing comfy shoes, have sun protection and water. There are some water fountains around the garden for refilling. Note: The ground is dusty, so don't wear your newest white sneakers! One improvement I would suggest is that they have better directional signage within the garden. WE STAYED FOR THE PULSE PARTY CONCERT In the late afternoon we attended the "Pulse Party" which included a live band, some food trucks (food extra) and some activities. We had tickets for this, but nobody checked them, which we thought was odd. I thought the Pulse Party was OK. My husband particularly liked the band. DINNER Dinner at Gertrude's was a nice addition to the day. Definitely make reservations as they were full on a Friday evening in April. RIDE SHARE AREA There is a specific area for ride share drop off/pick-up on the edge of the parking lot. Look for the signs. We took a ride share from downtown Phoenix where were were staying. SMALLER CAFÉ WAS CLOSED There was a cafe at the back of the garden, but it didn't seem to be open the day we were there as it was behind a roped off area, along with one of the larger Framerate screens, which was disappointing. WE ENJOYED OUR VISIT We enjoyed our visit and took lots of photographs. I don't think it's something we would visit again if we were in Phoenix, but it was definitely worth visiting the first time! Such a cool experience. I was in town visiting and this was my first stop since I had to wait to check in to my hotel. Conveniently I arrived on the second Tuesday of the month so I did not have to pay an admission fee. Having a community day once a month allows locals and tourists a chance to experience the beauty who otherwise may not be able to pay. I love organizations that offer such services. I walked around for about an hour or so and explored the butterfly garden, desert plants, and exhibits. Everything was well maintained and easy to navigate. I do suggest grabbing a map because it is easy to get turned around. They also have a cute gift shop. read more

We recently visited Desert Botanical Garden and purposely planned to arrive about an hour before sunset so we could experience it in both the light and the dark, which I would highly recommend doing. During the day, it can get pretty hot, especially in the warmer months. They do have water fountains, but the water didn't taste the cleanest, so I would suggest just bringing your own water to be safe and more comfortable. Parking was easy, and I appreciated that it was free, which is not always the case at places like this. I really liked the layout of the garden. The different types of plant life are thoughtfully organized, and there are placards throughout that explain not only the plants but also the animals that pass through the area. It felt educational without being overwhelming. We saw hummingbirds, butterflies, and even rabbits, which made it feel very alive and immersive. As the sun sets, the entire atmosphere shifts. The lighting installations throughout the garden create a completely different vibe that's really special. There were also some projections and time-lapse style visuals that added an artistic element without taking away from the natural beauty. It felt calm, almost meditative at times. There are also plenty of places to sit and just take in the scenery, which I appreciated. They do have a restaurant on the premises, but it closes fairly early. If you're set on eating there, I would plan to arrive earlier, have your meal, and then explore the gardens into the evening. Otherwise, you may miss that option. We also happened to catch some live music while we were there, which added a really nice touch to the experience. A couple other things to keep in mind that others often mention: tickets can sell out, especially for sunset and evening hours, so it's worth booking ahead. The paths are well maintained and mostly flat, making it very stroller-friendly and accessible, but there is quite a bit of walking, so comfortable shoes are a must. Overall, it's a really beautiful and thoughtfully curated experience that highlights the desert in a way that feels both peaceful and engaging. The garden was recommended to me, and it was worth a trip. Our group did not give ourselves enough time to explore. There was more to see, and it was more interesting than we expected. We were there during the butterfly exhibit as well. They also have a particularly good gift shop. My only critique is that it was hard to find your way around, the map was minimally helpful as we did not always know what area we were in. What an amazing venue. I've been here many times both in their rooms presenting at a senior expo and as a patron looking at the gardens. They have a fantastic amount of parking the staff there are incredibly nice and overall it is just a very well kept environment. Would definitely come back here and bring any family. What an amazing first experience! Yes I have lived in Az my whole life and never experienced the beauty of the Desert Botanical Gardens! But I'm so happy that we went when we did! The flashlight walk through experience was great! We s arrived at 7:30. Perfect to walk through with just a little sunset before dark! Everyone's so helpful and knowledgeable, they had flash lights to have out along with with glow in the dark necklaces and bracelets! Super cute touch, along with a drawing area in the front for kids or families! They had free books they were giving away as you start your walk. Entering was beautiful lovely how everything is set up and all the signage was informative. Loved all the pit stop areas with the exhibit, they had a gentlemen there with a snake giving information and allowing us to pet it, they had cactus information from germination all the way up to actual cactus that had been dead or cut down that you can look at and hold the informed you about every stage of the cactus and how old they are at different sizes all of them ready to answer any questions anyone had, they had another person with the water insect. They are on property showing us and informing us about them along with acute stuff or we got to go in and do paintings on little clay medallions like they did in ancient days! The most fascinating thing I learned is the hole in the saguaro cactus are actually "scars" that the cactus forms from the birds making a hole and pecking at it, the cactus scars and the birds actually live in that scar hole as you say!! Something super funny that I did not know and super informative was there is "Mesquite powder "I have lived here with my whole life like I said, and I never knew that you could use the Mesquite for powder they give you samples and they sell bags there the sample is very sweet texture And to be honest with you. I was pretty excited to learn this! I will be going back during holiday season! I highly recommend going here to see ur beautiful desert life. read more

The second Tuesday of every month is Community Day! You just hop online to pick a time and reserve your free tickets. There's a great variety of cacti here, and we really enjoyed walking the wildflower path and spotting butterflies along the way. The garden with the big sundial is super cool--it actually shows the accurate time. I also liked the section with edible plants growing (herbs, melons, onions, peppers, etc.); it made the visit feel both interesting and educational for all ages. Also, check out their memberships for special discounts and member-only offers. Tip: They have vending machines onsite near the entrance, but it was all water bottles for sale. Save yourself money and bring your own water bottle (with ice)! read more

April's visit brought flowers, no showers! My friend Kim and I spent three hours walking all five trails racking up 1000 steps on my pedometer. DBG offers , tours, galleries, dining, a library and rotating seasonal exhibits. One highlight, was the Cohns family butterfly exhibit. The guides were friendly when explaining the process for entering. The guests are timed through two sets of doors to prevent the butterflies from escaping. Being so up close provided many chances to snap fine detailed photos ! Compared to the Butterfly Wonderland in Scottsdale, I found this group of beautiful insects smaller and more delicate but no less eye catching. During our April visit, the exhibit "Towards 2050" made a powerful impression on me. Over 5000 flag panels were crafted by participants from all over the United States into a huge outdoor labyrinth. A local textile artist, Ann Morton organized this massive humanity effort to inspire ideas for climate change. It was stunning to see it in person. This exhibit ran until June 1, 2025. These 9 X 9 squares are being repurposed into blankets. Another community project! The other seasonal exhibit that ran Mar-May was the orchid display. In the humid, brightly lit RAF gallery were 3000 breathtaking orchids. Some in planters, some on the wall and my favorite ones were hanging from the ceiling. Staff members were on hand to remind visitors not to touch any of the delicate flowers. This display was a bonus that was included in the cost of general admission. Some tips- come prepared with two bottles of water, sunscreen and sunglasses. It will make your visit a pleasurable one! read more

As mentioned in my previous update, I was anxious to bring my kids this year to see the gorgeous geometric light installations...but super disappointed that they did not have them as part of the light event this year. They were really fabulous. So I felt as if the price of the ticket should have been lower without them because it was mainly lit trees this year. My first time visiting this hidden gem garden consisting of over 50,000 plants! I arrived early as suggested to avoid the heat during my mid-May stay. Parking lot is large sized and complimentary. Upon approaching the entrance you'll be greeted by glass sculptures that resemble large plants and was curious how these would look during the after dark events. I arrived early morning as suggested and since it was a Sunday there was no line to purchase tickets. I was shocked to find out that this garden has been around prior to 1940 and the beauty, tranquility and grandeur of the garden surrounded me everywhere I looked. The employees were friendly and knowledgeable in regard to the types and ages of the species in the gardens and trails. I was shocked to find out the some of the tall cactus in the hills were nearly 100 years old! I highly recommend this garden and will definitely return here when visiting the Phoenix area. read more

I never was a huge Desert Botanical Gardens fan. There's plenty of free parks where you can walk around Phoenix and enjoy the same nature. I always did love Las Noches de las Luminarias, where you wander from music area to music area through the trails at night drinking alcoholic hot chocolate. That was the extent of my involvement with DBG, though. Until I had a toddler. The Cactus Clubhouse at the Desert Botanical Gardens is worth every penny of the year membership I now own. It's a kids club where your toddler can sit quietly and do nature-themed arts and crafts surrounded by animal stuffed animals and live scorpions.... or go outside and dress up like a butterfly and proceed to pour water on her head, make mud cupcakes, over-water tomato plants, and bang on musical instruments. It's like the Children's Museum, but with a big focus on the outdoors. Every corner has a different activity. I ask my 2 year old what she wants to do now and she says "botanical gardens please, tomatoes!!!" I only wish it stayed open year-round instead of closing in the summers! read more

As an Elite Yelper, I was lucky to receive complimentary tickets to check out the summer event Flashlight Nights - and I'm so glad I did! Although held after dark and clearly geared toward families with kids, the event was still a fun and unique experience for my husband and me. It was a warm evening filled with glowing flashlights, blooming flowers, towering cacti, curious critters, and interactive activities at every turn. Nov, 2025. The Desert Botanical Garden shows up on most lists of "Top Things to Do in Phoenix." Already lovers of botanical gardens, we visited here in Nov, 2025. We are appreciative that this place of nature and tranquility has been preserved for generations to come in the urban areas of Phoenix and Scottsdale. The garden has an interesting layout with a center red brick loop trail from which additional mostly dirt-packed loop trails originate/end. That way, you can adjust the length of your experience to the amount you want to walk. The side trails vary in length, from the Center for Desert Living Trail (1/10 mile) to both the Plants & People of the Sonoran Desert Trail and the Desert Wildflower Trail being 1/3 mile long each. We walked all of the trails and logged 2 miles, including the walk from/to the parking lot. The trail had little elevation change. This is a beautiful, well-maintained, natural park with a lot of signage to identify the native cacti and other plants. There were a few muddy areas on the offshoot trails, but our visit was on the day after some significant rains in the Phoenix area. Visitors are encouraged to stay hydrated, and there are regular water refilling stations. Workers with name tags were also positioned around the garden to answer questions. There is a restaurant "Gertrude's by Tarbell's", as well as the Patio Cafe, and a Garden Shop, but we didn't visit any of these. This would've been a 5-star rating but for two things. (1) while the garden is run by a non-profit foundation, admission is quite expensive. Our adult tickets were $39.95 each, and there weren't any discounts for seniors or AAA members. (The only discount is for active military; membership programs are also available if you are able to visit botanical gardens regularly). (2) the Garden is featuring a special exhibit FRAME RATE: Desert Pulse through May 10th. This is a multi-sensory art exhibit that blends 3D LiDAR scanning, motion and sound to reveal visuals captured over the course of a year. It's presented as five monumental, or huge, video installations in the garden, as well as an immersive indoor experience at the RAF Exhibit Gallery. My husband and I, while finding the exhibit to be creative, both felt that it distracted from the tranquility of being in the desert garden. We could hear the music from the installations in many parts of the park, and the video installations got in the way of some of our intended photographs. We're glad that we visited once, but probably would not return at the current cost point. read more

I'm so glad I finally visited this place, it's really cool! I came on community day, which is the 2nd Tuesday of each month, and admission is free! The main parking lot was pretty full, but I was able to snag a spot from someone leaving. I think they have an additional lot nearby. So many beautiful cacti, succulents, trees, flowers. Bridges to walk over and different paths to take. They offer a lot of events too, and on this evening they were having a full moon sunset meditation event. I didn't stay, but it looked really nice. There were lots of water refill stations too. They also offer memberships which get you into over 300 other gardens/parks across the country, as well as discounts at this garden. Came in tonight for the elite week 25 project. Well it started out great. Than ended up being pushed into a cactus twice so it was fun pulling needles out of my arm and leg. Then ended up having people flash their lights in your face I'm 6'2 not sure why the flash lights needed to be flashed in my face when you could barely see. The experience overall was great besides the trails not being accommodating for the amount of people in the park. Staff were friendly and the grounds were clean. read more

One of my favorite stops during our trip was to the Desert Botanical Garden. Located in the popular Papago Park, the Garden is home to over 50,000 plants across 140 acres. From the iconic Saguaro to the Prickly Pear Cactus, it was fun to see how vibrant the desert flora and fauna could be. They had a special orchid exhibit happening when we were there, and I loved seeing all the beautiful variations. I think the full walk-through took us about 1.5-2 hours, and be sure to bring plenty of water and sunblock as a lot of the garden is out in the sun. The garden has a cafe on site if you're looking to grab a bite. We also went on a weekday around lunch, and the garden was definitely still bustling, so I imagine it gets even busier during the weekends. If you're coming from a place of evergreen trees like me, the Desert Botanical Garden is definitely worth a visit during your time in Phoenix! read more

I absolutely love this garden! We've stopped in for a casual date, Pride celebrations, and most recently to take our engagement photos. Pro tip: while the free days are great for affordability, I'd recommend paying the usual entrance fee if you're doing photos. When we were there, there were so many families getting their holiday photos done! Even still, our incredible photographer (Do It With Love Photography) was able to capture timing during sunset. What a beautiful and well maintained botanical garden! Our last visit was brief due to the short attention span of our toddler, but it was still very enjoyable. The gardens are well staffed and the employees were very helpful. Most impressive was the temporary orchid exhibit and their seasonal butterfly pavillion. My daughter had a blast watching the butterflies. We have waited in line to enter the two times we went on the weekend. If you are a Pima County Library member, they do offer complimentary tickets through the library's Culture Pass program. I'm not sure about other local libraries, but worth looking into. read more

I am a member of the garden because it's such a beautiful environment to be out walking in. I attended a Saturday morning Dog Day event. It was so fun to bring my dog to come along w8th me. The grounds are immaculate and the volunteers are so nice and informative. For dog days they provided biodegradable poop bags abd water bowls around the garden, which was great! It was also great being able to see Desert Pulse exhibit during the day. read more
