I can't say enough good things about Ade who helped me with office chairs at DC's Design Within Reach store in Georgetown. Ade was patient, understanding and professional every time I came into the store to look at chairs. She encouraged me to take my time and helped me make an informed decision about which chair to buy. She never hovered but made a practice of appearing whenever I had a question or needed her help. Listening to Ade, helped me clarify what I was really looking for in an office chair and helped me see things I never would have seen or appreciated. However, it should be mentioned that our sales person in the Georgetown store, Ade Ademisoye, had the perfect amount of energy and design sensitivity that anyone could ask for. I love visiting this chic store online and in person. It's inspiring to see all their modern wares at a brick and mortar shop, and get that bougie feel. DWR is located near Cady's Alley in Georgetown near other similar high-end design and home goods stores. Remember that it's quite pricey $$$$ before pulling your wallet out. You can probably purchase a statement piece for your house, but it'll be a full-on investment. Each room in this store has a different style and showcases the diverse aesthetics of each furniture designer. Take in the clean lines and bright colors, ahhh. They sell designer chairs, desks, unique lighting (so much to choose from -- see pix. Breathtaking), fur rugs and more. I like how the store also offers free community classes like their flower corsage class that came with mimosas and light bites. Hope they continue to provide more of these opportunities like these, too! read more

Went to the DSW location found the store to be beautiful. Bought a condo and spent a ton of money on furnishings and accessories over the last 4 months all on line. Thought we would give the store a try. One young women was very nice and helpful we stated that we were new home buyers and had received a 20% discount on all our items. We were looking to purchase 3 pieces of furniture from the store. When the young women who was very nice went to ask the manager if we could get our discount she said NO. SO GUESS WHAT WENT HIME AND CALLED AND VOUGHT THE THREE ITEMS FROM ONLINE. You would think they would like to get some sales from the store Oh Well, guess not. Every desk was filled with an employee. I really should not of bought the items but they are so nice and helpful online and have been great to us. The store needs to take lessons from the online employees. read more

My husband and I have purchased many items from Design Within Reach over the years as we were able to refresh our previous furniture we bought many years ago. The design and quality of the DWR items are very consistent and we are able to mix and match many of their items such as the Matera bed, their carpets, Nelson lighting etc. More recently we moved from the Bay Area to Washington DC, and Reza Rouhi at the Georgetown location helped us to pick additional items - a convertable sofa, storage unit, living room and deck chairs etc. He is lovely to work with and we really appreciated his good taste and advice to select our items. If you need help with design advice to select items, I highly recommend Reza, and DWR overall if you're looking for beautifully designed, quality home furnishings. read more

Worst experience. I will never purchase and item from this company again. They have the worst customer service and they don't care ! I placed an order December 1st, 2020. The order was supposed to be delivered 12 weeks later. I received one call where they said they were waiting on items. Never hard from them again. I called several times and I could not get through. They put you on hold and if you leave a number they don't call you back. Finally I got the order delivered on May 12 and there were missing 2 items. The delivery guy, of course had no idea about anything and neither did Beatriz at customer service when I called. Beatriz promised she would follow up- she never did. So, today, May 27 (almost 6 months after placing the order) and after chasing customer service, I finally spoke to Arlene or Darlene who basically said they don't have any information and they will let me know when they do. When I asked what she meant, she very sternly and speaking slowly, as if I didn't get it the first time said "...This is all we know" . Moral of this story. If you want to get your furniture within a year or so- don't buy from Design Within Reach. Furthermore, if you do, hope that nothing goes wrong because their "customer service" is a misnomer. read more

This place has the worst customer service. Last year I went to look at a piece I had seen on line. I was totally ignored when I walked in the store. I had to practically beg for help - it was so bad that I ended buying the product on line just because I didn't want to reward any of the awful salespeople. Fast forward to this year - exact same experience. Walked in yesterday about 2 pm. Store was not crowded - salespersons literally didn't look up when I walked in. Was there for about fifteen minutes - nobody said anything. We walked right past their desk when we were leaving- it was almost like they were trying to avoid eye contact with customers. I don't know if it is because I am Black or if they are just rude but I would never give this store my business. read more

Service is great when they want to sell you something. But you better know that it will absolutely work in your home. There is little to no flexibility if colors or sizes don't work after 30 days. I bought a number of pieces during a remodel. Construction ran late, so it was after 30 days when I unpacked and put things out. When a few pieces didn't work out, there was NO support. I contacted the store around day 45 and there was nothing they could do. After 30 days it's your problem. At this price point one expects much better service and the ability to exchange items (particularly when they have never been unwrapped). I was open to a compromise, willing to pay restocking fees, return shipping, exchange. There is a lot of competition and better value for money out there. I've been far more satisfied with quality and service from Room and Board. Big fail DWR- I expected more. read more

Design Within Reach! When you need a breath of fresh air and to be away from the messiness of life, go to DWR. Purchase a beautiful Eames chair or fur rug that will turn your drab apartment into something that New York hip condos are made of. I came here for one of their flower arranging courses during Mother's Day weekend with some of my friends. It's great to see that this Georgetown store really involves itself within the DC community and invites people like the local florist to offer classes. I was in awe of the design and lighting here. See my pictures, and be in awe with me. I told my roommate that I wish we could live in this store! Each room had a different style and theme. They also had unique host gifts that would make for special presents. I'm enamored by the lighted paper book that they have, Lumio Book Lamp by Max Gunawan. It originally came from a Kickstarter/independent artist, and now they're featured in design stores like this and MoMA in New York. The salespeople are helpful and have deep knowledge of the furniture that they sell. I do have to warn that it is very expensive here. You are in Georgetown! But you can also come here to find inspiration, then go online and (dare I say it) Ikea afterwards and look for similar items of a different quality. But it won't be the same... You can also sign up for their e-mail list and look for their sales. The tabletop items, though, and decorations are fairly priced. I need to make a million dollars off my start-up next year, so I can build my dream house with the furniture goods here. Worth the dream. read more

While out for a random walk on the C&O canal, we wandered into Georgetown and the high end interior design mecca of Cady's Alley. This particular day was the "Day of Design" where shops were serving wine and cheese and had special workshops and speakers. The definite highlight of the day was DWR hosting a presentation on Green Building and Design, with several speakers from an architectural firm, a local community non-profit, and a green home center. Love how they were presenting for awareness and included something for everyone. The studio proprietor, Ann Blackwell, led the presentation and is also a LEED Accredited Professional. She and the DWR staff were very approachable and friendly. The store offers some environmentally sustainable products and other really cool stuff (i.e. eames chairs, etc...). While the furniture is a bit pricey (hey, it's Georgetown), they're good quality and worth checking out. Will definitely go back if I can save a few bucks... read more

I guess everyone knows what DWR is, and anyone who considers their prices to be "within reach" has some long arms. That being said, if you know what you are looking for and know what you are looking at, you can find a unique piece here. The staff are pleasant and helpful, and the service upon purchase is excellent (as you would expect for dropping the cash required to buy something in here). I would not recommend this place unless you have a very specific need that is not met by other (cheaper) places. If you're just out "shopping for a chair", I would not recommend this place. Start at Ikea, then go to Creative Classics in Old Town Alexandria, then consider a higher-end place like this. read more

I have been a customer of DWR for many years and love the furniture. My experience with the Georgetown store was abysmal. Worse customer service I have experienced. Multiple emails with no response. An excusable 5 month delay to fill an order with a serious lack of communication from the store manager. I join other reviewers in saying DWR has the worst customer service and a real problem managing its inventory. I Ordered 4 bar stools in April. First set came broken. Second set came broken. Third set came broken. The delivery people didn't even deliver the fourth set because they were broken as well. Today, three months later, DWR still has not resolved the matter. When I requested a refund, they didn't process it. In talking with at least six customer service reps, only one was responsive. Moreover, they use some third party vendor to deliver and you have to wait for them for about half a day. So the pleasure of losing four days of work waiting for the products I ordered, them effectively encumbering north of $2000 for merchandise I never received and zero customer service response all adds up to a pretty horrendous experience. While they have the best modern furniture on the market, the name is a misnomer. What you buy is truly out of reach and they just do not care about their customers or their customer experience. read more

Thanks DWR GEORGETOWN for the fabulous service & great furniture. The staff really went above & beyond for my partner & I who were in a rush to furnish our new apartment in DC. They found me a gorgeous sofa in stock & then found me the color coverset at the warehouse. The manager also suggested pairing it with a PLATNER coffee table that I am in love with & was able to get a great deal on as there was a sale! She also pulled together our bedroom & managed to get it all delivered white glove on time as soon as we moved in. No one follows up and every time I call headquarters to get the issue resolved they tell me I need to go through the "studio" since I purchased through the store. CUSTOMERS BE AWARE! I bought a floor sample bedside lamp at DSW in Berkeley only to find out the USB port does not work. Of course, I knew it was a floor sample when I bought it. The only obvious flaw in the lamp when I made the purchase was that the product was chipped. If I had known that there was an electrical flaw, I would not have purchased it. DSW ANSWER: Unfortunately because this item is a floor sample marked at a major discounted price, we will not be able to offer you any guarantee or refund. Like you will see on your invoice it is a final sale, as is product. You may be able to go through Pablo (the manufacturer) directly to see if there is a way to fix the USB port. DSW, you can stand by your refusal to do anything about this. That is within DWR's legal right. My consumer right is to inform this is my first and last purchase with DWR. I shall tell all my family and friends to be careful when purchasing from your company. In this case, consumer rights are more powerful than legal rights. read more

Hard to find at first, as it is nestled away and around the corner. The shop is well laid out. The manager is a really cool person who cares about the community and schedules some really great events at the store. Get on the mailing list, and show up. I know you will have a good time. This store offers TERRIBLE customer service. I purchased a lamp from the Adams Morgan location (which has since closed down) in 2009. About a year later the lamp stopped working -- these things happen -- however the staff at DWR at Georgetown have dismissive and unhelpful in trying to help solve the problem of why the lamp does not work. First they told me that they have to contact the manufacturer in order to see if there are any other service orders out on a similar model. When I inquired, they told me the manufacturer has recently moved warehouses and it will take longer. My last telephone call was not returned. They have been rude and unresponsive. I would not recommend spending your money in this chain store. Better to go to Alexandria and spend your money at Daniel Donnelly -- at least there you can speak to Daniel directly and get fantastic customer service. read more

DWR has great design and very high quality. The prices are not cheap, but they are appropriate for the quality, especially when we compare against our pieces from slightly less expensive brands. I know that the pieces from DWR are timeless classics that will both look good and last for a very long time. They truly are a worthwhile investment. We had a fantastic experience working with Ray at the Georgetown branch of DWR. He gave great advice and was extremely attentive to details. He checked on shipping status and made sure we were happy with our products once delivered. In fact, one side table was slightly damaged, and he facilitated a quick and seamless exchange for a new product. read more

I had a horrible experience all around. 1. I purchased a floor mirror from the store right before a semiannual sale and the representative didn't even mention the upcoming sale (-10 points for dishonesty) 2. After the purchase, I looked at the specification of the product on DWR's website to make sure that it came with an anti-tip kit because the last thing I need if for a 50 pound mirror to fall on a toddler. The information was not clear. So, I called customer support and asked if the product came with an anti-tip kit. The agent told me that "I will just have to wait until I get the mirror to see what it comes with!" (-10 points for not knowing your product) 3. I received the product a couple of weeks later. The package had a boot print on. Clearly someone had stepped on the mirror. I took a picture of this and I am happy to share it with the store. I opened the box and the back frame had a minor crack. Because the front looked fine, I decided to keep it, because you cannot return DWR items (-10 points for damaging the box and the frame and -10 points for slow delivery). 4. I opened the package and found cleats, but no anti-tip kit. There was no way for me to install an anti-tip kit because the frame is too thin. So, I had to change my initial plan of leaving it on the floor and instead hang it on the wall. So, I hired a handyman for the job, and that cost more money for an expensive mirror that was now on sale! (-10 points because I later found an identical mirror at Room and Board that comes with an anti-tip kit. Did I mention Room and Board's exceptional delivery services?) 5. I then call the store to make a complaint about this entire experience, and ask that I retroactively receive the sale price. Isn't that how you win customer? I was basically told "tough luck" and I can go ahead and speak with the store proprietor. I left her a message. (-10 points for another round of horrible customer experience). Give me one reason why I should ever go back to DWR or recommend it to anyone? read more

She said she remedied the problem by speaking with those involved in my dissatisfaction, and took back the chair I bought. Excellent customer service! When my husband and I decided to choose some new *dream* furniture, this Design Within Reach was one of our first stops. We were helped by a wonderful Customer Service Rep, Galina, and were impressed by her knowledge, warmth and passion for the furniture. Galina was able to answer all of our questions, and provided outstanding customer service throughout the entire process: from selection to purchase to shipping, her role was absolutely integral to our positive experience. I've bought a number of large and small pieces from DWR over the past decade. Their offerings have always been inspiring, but their business model of late is appalling. I advise anyone thinking of buying from this retailer to find another source for your selection as customers can find an on-line retailer more accommodating than DWR. (ex. YLiving, Bauhaus, Hive, NicheModern, etc.) The company doesn't offer any incentives (i.e., free shipping, no tax, etc.) to buy from them and the return penalties are awful. Ex. this from a Client Care Representative..."If you wish to return an item, please let us know and we'll send you the prepaid return label to get the product back to us. Once we receive your order back in our warehouse, we'll refund your original method of payment (less original shipping, return shipping and a 10% restocking fee)." Note: in addition to shipping fees (original and return shipping) returning an item incurs a restocking fee of %10...that's of the full cost (not the sale price...if you were lucking enough to get the item(s) on sale.) Any company that nickels-and-dimes customers like this is suspect. Too, I find it odd that there are no customer reviews for DWR itself posted to their site... Find another retailer with better customer service and consideration. read more

DWR sells the real stuff - don't settle for knock-offs. The georgetown location is the nicest in the DC area that I've been to. The staff are courteous and knowledgeable. They send updates when new items arrive and when sales begin. In particular, I've been working with William Linares of the georgetown staff and found him to be very helpful and extremely prompt when it comes to ordering for my home and for my business. Definitely worth a pop in if you're in the neighborhood. read more

I always enjoy walking into DWR; there is sure to be something new that catches my eye every time, and the staff are always helpful. I have purchased several pieces over the years, and all of them have been top notch. Typically, I work with William, who is consistently cheerful and on point in providing advice. The only problem you might run into at the store is its price tags, but as long as you know what you're in for when you head over, there should be no surprises. All I can say is that while the prices are high, there are no rip-offs: every piece I've bought is heirloom quality, and I expect to have them for many decades into the future. read more

The products Design Within Reach sells are, as you'd expect, of high quality. What Design Within Reach is supposed to do is to provide the customer service to accompany those products. That is the part that gets the one star. At the Georgetown store they are pleasant enough, but inept. I feel bad having to call out nice people, but you'd do much better contacting the individual manufacturers and ordering directly from them. The sales staff took the experience of buying wonderful new furniture and turned it into a nightmarish stream of poorly answered inquires as to what was going on with the order. read more

Terrible experience with the Georgetown, DC, store. I was told in August that the Matera bed and sidetables would go on sale sometime at the end of September, beginning of October, and I arranged for Jennifer to call me with the sale price when she knew the sale date, so that I could give my approval for the purchase, which was to be a gift. In the meantime, I trustingly gave her my American Express card number. When she called, before the sale date, I told her that I had noticed the Design Within Reach ad offering a 2 year interest free account with the Design Within Reach card and told her that I wanted to use that card instead of my American Express. I told her I was getting the number, that I was waiting for Experian to remove the security freeze I had place on my credit report after the hacking event. The conversation ended with me believing that Jennifer would use my Design Within Reach card, since she knew that it was in process. Instead, she charged AX tout de suite and sent me an email receipt. I immediately called the store, spoke to another clerk who took the new card number which I had acquired, and the clerk indicated she would send me a corrected receipt. DWR did not get back to me for a day and a half, so I called back. Jennifer said that they could not change the charge because the items had shipped (apparently within seconds of the charge), and that I would have to get AX to eliminate the charge, that DWR couldn't do so. AX said, "That's ridiculous. She can cancel the charge." AX has been great, but DWR has refused to honor the sale agreement which I understood was to use my Design Within Reach card, which I got specifically for the DWR purchases. And, after all this, it was not surprising that DWR gave an incorrect account of the transaction to AX. DWR noted that I had called the same day as the charge with the DWR card number, "but the items had already shipped." Some weeks later, when the bed had arrived and was to be delivered, the delivery people said they could not get the bed up the stairway. My son in law sent a photo to DWR which agreed that the delivery person was wrong. DWR arranged to send another delivery team on another day, and the bed was delivered without difficulty. DWR indicated to my son in law that, because of the delivery snafu, it would credit the delivery charge of some $300, but it has failed to do so. What started out as a friendly sale ended with subterfuge and disingenuousness. I have canceled my DWR card, and I have had full cooperation with American Express in our attempts to get DWR to honor the arrangement as it was discussed, but the last call was DWR's. My standing with AX is good, and I am grateful for their efforts in attempting to deal with this merchant, but I will not recommend the services of DWR to anyone. read more

I have had great experiences with service from DWR in Georgetown. I had trouble fitting my lamp together when it was delivered so I took it to the store and Ray Nguyen cheerfully brought it from my car and fixed it for me, and showed me how. When I later broke the glass on the same lamp and couldn't seat the new glass in the fixture he took the lamp apart for me and figured out how to fix it. Kind and friendly expertise! And he wasn't even the one who sold me the lamp. This store is a very laid back and friendly place with beautiful furniture. read more

The five stars is for Melissa and the delivery team. Melissa was our designer and she is amazing - she came to our house and sent us 3D designs. We have been working with her for over half a year now and she has helped us furnish half of our new house. Because DWR has multiple designers, she has more options to solve any functional or aesthetic challenges we have, and our house doesn't look like it is all one style, which I like. We ended up buying way more at DWR than we intended, but not because she pushes products. She has ideas that I would not think of myself, and sees things we don't. She also will give us the lower cost and higher cost options, so she isn't pushing the more expensive items all the time, and sometimes has told us NOT to buy something that I originally wanted. She knows the DWR products really well too, and advises us on finishes, long term durability and maintenance, etc. I have grown to rely on her judgment - almost anytime I have gone in a different direction, I regretted it. And other times I have taken a risk and been glad. I even have bought items that I did not even see in person, based solely on her recommendation, and was very happy. That is unheard of for me! After our initial visit, we had a list of items we were interested in, but made clear we would wait for sales. She would alert us when something came in, and also help us group items to minimize shipping or get white glove upgrades. This personal attention was amazing, and I got spoiled - I went to other stores and would get frustrated with their customer service. Shipping and delivery was very smooth too - on a couple of occasions we did have some issues with the products and DWR handled the exchange very easily. The one negative at DWR is their accounting is a little confusing because they bill when they ship, and items may come long after the initial purchase. This is normal at furniture stores but I found that DWR was a bit more confusing than average - the payments showed up on my credit card statement in weird chunks so it was hard to track, but Melissa worked with us to sort everything out. In terms of quality, everything we bought has been very well made. Often I would try to find something similar at a lower price elsewhere, but almost always the DWR version (usually the original) was superior in the quality or design. They do have less expensive items, like the Nelson lamps we purchased were about the same as buying a drum light elsewhere, and we have bought lamps, mirrors, a rug, and a pouf that were very reasonable but much better in quality and look than other more standard furniture stores. They have lines from newer designers that are really good value for the quality (Line collection), and we were able to get good deals on sales. We did splurge on a few pieces and have not regretted it at all, as they are collector's items that we hope to keep for a long time and the knockoffs just were not the same. read more
