My wife and I decided to add a patio to our home after many years. We had a company install a 15′ X 20′ patio made of pavers. Of course we then needed some sort of a roof to provide shade and protection from the elements. I started researching and decided that a retractable awning would probably be our best option. My problem was that most retractable awnings will not extend beyond 11′ thus leaving about 4′ of our patio exposed. By checking websites of companies in our area that sold and installed retractable awnings I came across Designer Awnings and the Sunesta awnings that they sold. The Sunesta exrended 14′ 8″ rather than 11′. The awning was motorized to make extension and retraction very simple. The awning could be equipped with a wind sensor so that if wind speed got to be too fast the unit would sense it and automatically retract the awning to avoid damage. The owners of Designer Home Improvements came out to our house in a very timely fashion to measure the job, get our ideas for color, find out what options we might want, price the job and get the order process started. As soon as the awning arrived they scheduled the installation. The installation was professionally done on the roof of our house, by necessity. When the job was complete, the workmen thoroughly cleaned up the job site and explained the operation of the awning. In addition, when we replaced the roof of our house, they came out and removed the awning until the roofing job was complete and then came back several days later to reinstall the awning. We're looking forward to adding a custom lighting setup to the awning in the spring. By the way, the total operation of this system is remote and can be handled from inside the house. My husband and I decided that we wanted a awning to cover the deck of our new condo. We ordered information from Sunsetter and started to do some internet research. It quickly became apparent to us that the awnings from Sunesta were rated among the highest in the industry. Coincidentally, we saw an ad for Designer Awnings in the "Clipper" magazine. We called and Dario (the owner) said he could come over that afternoon. Dario measured the deck and explained our options. He was able to give us a price on the spot. After discussion, reading the literature that Dario brought and picking a color, we gave Dario a deposit. We needed to obtain permission from our HOA, so we requested that he hold off ordering until we had the permission. We called him back the next week and he told us it would take "about a week and a half". Sure enough in 10-12 days, we received a call and set up an appointment for installation. The construction of our condo quickly complicated matters. The mounting location turned out to be hollow and not strong enough to support the awning brackets in the correct locations. . Dario's installer told us not to worry, he would be back with soffit brackets. Upon return, he opened the soffit and found 2 by 4 roof trusses! Again, not strong enough. We decided that the final solution was to mount a 2 by 12 covered in flashing over the hollow area and hang the awning on this sold base. For the third and last time, he returned. We installed an inground pool with a pool shed/bar. When it started to get hot, we couldn't sit at the bar because of the sun. And when it rained, everything behind the bar got soaked. We knew about Designer Awnings because we had a large one installed at our tire shop and the guys are thrilled with it. So we decided to put a retractable awning on the east side of our shed. Dario came out, measured, gave us a quote and three weeks later, the installers arrived!! What great service!! We were so extremely satisfied with the end result that today we had 2 more installed...one on the west side and one across the front.
