not a place to get a good pedicure. I was not offered any book to look through all the colors they had and was not informed when I arrived I had to walk around the store to pick a color so then I was rushed to pick a color. they did not sanitize the pedicure foot bath as I was sat at one that the lady had just got done with. The nail polish was almost empty and she kept pooling in a liquid to make more of it and left the nail polish streaky and I'm thinking it won't last long until it starts chipping. overall bad experience and not worth $55. very disappointed.. I have only been here three times and was looking for a good nail saloon to continue going to but I can't justify paying $55 for a place like this. read more

The good is the salon is very clean and the signature pedicure is lovely with a seltzer and chocolate while you are sitting in the chair getting done. The bad is they have canceled the last two times and this is something my daughter-in-law and I do together as a treat. With schedules being hard to go together, when they cancel due to staff calling off, it takes away the enjoyment. read more

Booking process for a bride was terrible... took multiple unreturned emails, phone calls and four total people working with me in less than a year. I had to make corrections to the schedule, and the pricing that was shared with me. Attempting to pay my deposit and full balance in advance was also not understood by any of the ladies working the desk - they had to call the person I was working with who never actually gave me her name. The make up wasn't like the photos I showed, and even after asking for some edits, it still wasn't done as requested. My hair was very nice when I walked out but the curls immediately fell. All my wedding photos have the half a part still curled and down part straight. Overall, I was very disappointed and would not recommend to others. Photo is 2 hours after leaving. read more

I first got my hair cut here in January by Eric and had such a pleasant overall experience, I decided to make this my go to spa/salon. The atmosphere is modern and relaxing, and the staff is wonderful and welcoming. I get often anxiety coming into new situations, especially at a salon/spa like this, but everyone at Designer's Denn has been so great at making me feel entirely comfortable. They welcome you in and offer you a drink (I usually accept a cup of hot tea and settle into one of the comfy chairs in the waiting area) until you are ready for your service. I have been in for my hair (as mentioned), and then for monthly massages with Matt, which have been fantastic. The massage staff is super, and makes you feel entirely at ease and relaxed; it has done wonders for my fibromyalgia, and I'm remembering I need to schedule another appointment! I've also been in for a manic mani, which is the quickie manicure, right before having a massage. Super great! They had given a book of coupons with my first service, redeemable for other services upon further purchase...so my next time in I'll be trying out their hair glaze service! read more

Designer's Denn was the first to introduce me to ''hard wax''. Personally it seems less painful and I'm told it's better for your skin and perhaps less ingrown hairs(?). The salon is located in the heart of downtown State College. Parking is basically limited but there are meters on the side or a parking garage nearby. I've never gotten my hair done here but it always looks fairly busy with people coming in and out for hair services. I did find it hard to get an appointment on short notice but otherwise, I've never had any problems with the service here. read more

I came to DD to get a brazilian because I was overdue and wasn't heading home to my usual spot for a few more weeks. I called a couple days in advance and they were EXTREMELY polite and professional on the phone to schedule. I got a phone call the day before my appointment and a text the day of to remind me. When I arrived they promptly greeted me and I was seen immediately. At DD, they use HARD WAX for their appointments and I had been getting soft wax brazilians for months thinking that the pain and suffering was inevitable. I barely flinched. I will definitely continue going back to DD. When I paid with my credit card, I was so embarrassed that I had no cash to tip (they only do cash or check tips) but they totally didn't bat an eye, they have these little envelopes you can take with you and drop back by at any time with the tip money. I've been coming to DD for six years now. Every service I've ever had has been top-notch, and the extra touches make the place worth the money. On a typical visit, you are greeted by one of the friendly counter people (they know me and many others by name) and offered a beverage while you wait. You also change into a robe any time you get a service done, which just adds to the spa feel, even on the hair salon side. They do tend to push products, but again, I've always been satisfied with everything I've bought here, and the one time I wasn't they were happy to let me trade it in for something else. They carry Bumble and Bumble, Decleor, Bare Minerals, and Dermalogica, among others. I've seen other reviews complain about prices, but I shopped around the first time I got a haircut and paid the same amount for a worse cut. If you're cash strapped, ask the front desk about modeling opportunities (free haircuts and discounted services) or choose a stylist that isn't at the master level yet. They always have someone more advanced check their work, so you're still getting the same service. Bottom line: For the marginally higher costs, you're getting a full salon experience. I highly recommend Designer's Denn for waxing, haircuts, massages, pedicures, and manicures. read more

Designer's Denn is simply best hair salon in State College. I tried a few other places when I moved into State College, and I had settled for Looks (which is also pretty good, just one notch behind Designer's Denn). But then I heard that Designer's Denn was offering free haircuts to train younger stylists, and I decided to give it a shot. It was love at first site. The location is central, with plenty of nearby parking. The facilities are classy, comfortable, neat, functional and beautiful. The service is truly remarkable, with some of the the nicest hostesses I've ever interacted with, complimentary refreshments, complimentary scalp and head massages (I'm not sure wether all stylists do this), a great professional atmosphere, and lots of positive energy. These little details add up to make for a wonderful overall experience. I usually got my hair done by Kendra, and she is an amazing hair stylist. She is truly skillful and she helped me understand my hair and find styles that work for me better than anything I've tried before. On occasions I also had my hair done by other stylists and I was never disappointed. It is among the priciest hair salons on State College but, in my experience, it is well worth the price. read more

The staff here is nice and I have had pleasant encounters with just about everyone that I have met. friendly and professional. My latest visit here was in July for a manicure and pedicure. A fabulous job on my tired feet. A relaxing place to have a pedicure. My manicure was okay. I can't remember the breakdown of the pricing, but the total before tip was $51. I had my hair cut here on several occasions and think they do an okay job and are attentive. However, I think that they have little experience with my hair type. Not any fault of theirs, but just the natural cause and effect since it appears that very few Asians frequent this place. read more

Came here graduation weekend to get a pedicure with my girl friend. We were so pleasantly surprised at how nice the salon was. I mean- we knew it would be nice, but it was SO spacious and airy too. Just a pleasure to sit and get a pedicure in. Our pedicurists were great and really sweet in their different ways. Really relaxing experience, but wouldn't suggest going here on a regular basis if you're on a budget. Not the service you would expect. I had damaged hair and badly needed a cut, and went to Designer's Denn for help. I was told I needed a consultation from Barb... what a joke. She was rude and pushy and actually tore a 1" wide chunk out of my hair to illustrate the damage (which I was aware of, as it was the reason I came in the first place). She used her expertise to determine I needed a cut, which I scheduled for a later date. I was so offended I would have not returned if I didn't need a cut so badly. Fortunatly, Heather did a wonderful job on my haircut, she was kind and talented. I feel like this place was hit or miss... I went in for color at another date and ended up covered in dye. I won't go back... I enjoy spending time in a quiet salon drinking tea, not dealing with a noisy place and disorganized and sometimes rude staff. read more

I started going to Designer's Denn because one of my wedding clients gave me a gift certificate. I've been there probably a dozen times now and I love it! Haircuts can be hit or miss, so when you find the right person you've got to stick with him/her. In my experience it's like that anywhere you go. It's nice to be able to have my hair colored without double/triple/quadruple-processing the old hair like other places do. They dye the roots and then glaze the rest to match. My favorite service so far is the MEGAPEEL. It feels great to have your gross old skin blasted off! I had a nasty brown age spot that is almost gone after 4 peels. Lizandra is such a sweet woman and she really knows what she is doing. The relaxation room is a nice touch, and the cucumber water is the best. It would be nice if they had more magazines to look at. read more

I just came back from two services: extended brazilian and gel manicure. Both were the worst I have ever had. Mallorie worked for me for the Brazilian and left patches of wax residue that could have been easily removed by her. Instead she told me to take a shower to get it off myself. She was really sloppy and left hair absolutely everywhere; in hard to reach places and even at the front where it was easily seen, thus she could have gone over it. I ended up buying hot wax myself and redoing everything as best as I could. Absolutely disappointing! Being the most expensive place in the area, I was hoping that they would provide the best service. Far from it. My manicure was done by Olivia and it was below mediocre! A lovely girl but sheesh. When I moved here to State College I left the hustle and bustle, the movement, the convenience, the narrow streets of Philly to start my new life as a Penn State grad student. Luckilly, thanks to my experience at Designers Denn I still have hair options. I arrived for my haircut appointment with Barb, a person with a lot of personality and clearly loves what she does. As a stylist she has meticulous execution and possesses scientific knowledge of hair, which I imagine would help her work with a diverse clientele. I described to her the layered look I wanted to achieve and the ending result was beautifully proportioned. The only miiiinor qualm I had about the experience was that the blow dry was a little humdrum, as there may have been a little too much product used. The color team at this salon is top notch, even by big city standards. I really liked Jesse (? red curly hair). To begin my transition from a summer to fall look I requested ombre-styled highlights, a newer technique introduced by celebrity stylists and recessionistas. Being open to more creative color opportunities, my colorist embraced the idea. I really appreciated how she involved other team members during the process and how it was clear she was evaluating her work as it developed. I love the results. Silly me for worrying! The salon also has a great selection of high end products: B&B, Decleor, etc. In my opinion for State College the prices are upscale, but again they are moderate compared to more urban areas. read more

They provided us with a lounge area set up with tables and light refreshments and snacks which allowed us a place to relax while others got their services done.
