I stayed here for a business trip and thought it was a great place to stay in the heart of downtown Detroit! Sounds cheesy, but since the hotel took good care of everything I needed, I could really focus all my mental energy on the work I was here to do! + Apparatus Room bar and restaurant was modern, beautifully decorated, and had some good food and drinks! My coworker ordered a full on meal and I tried a Moscow Mule which was a little warm but otherwise good + This is a lovely historical building which was converted from an old firehouse. They have display cases sharing the building's story + Rooms are nicely furnished, and I was pleasantly surprised that all the amenities were Le Labo. Pretty bougie as those soaps, shower gels, shampoos, lotions etc are usually $50-$65 per bottle! + Strong wifi. I was able to log in and do some work after getting home from work each day. No issues. + Spacious shower with nice rain showerhead + Good AC, especially clutch for this July visit. Adjustable thermostat worked well. + Free coffee downstairs in the morning + Free fitness center access + Check in and check out were quick and efficient. Lady who helped me check out was super nice and sent me my receipt via email. - No hot water or coffee in the room or ice machine. You can request a cup of these from the front desk, I think. - One of the pillows had grey stains on it. Yum. Not an issue as I had 8 pillows total on my 2 queen beds for 1 business traveler lol read more

The room is equipped with snacks such as beef jerky, chips,and candy. There is sparkling water, still, pop, and beer. The bed was a king-size and super comfy. This place is unique and cute and close to the arena, stadium, & tons of restaurants. The hotel was converted from an old firehouse. The rooms are spacious, beautiful, & well decorated. The staff is kind and attentive. They have a well stocked minibar with reasonable prices. Only a couple of reasons for the 4 stars instead of 5. There isn't a coffee pot in the rooms although they do keep coffee in the lobby for some time in the morning. They have a Netflix option on the TV but it's so slow it doesn't load. Incredible downtown Detroit firehouse transformed into an intriguing and beautiful hotel. The highlights are the lobby, the restaurant and bar, with their unbelievably high ceilings and firetruck arch doorway walls. The lighting is warm and chic. The apps at the bar are fantastic and the cocktails clever and delicious. The location makes it perfectly walkable to the Detroit River, Campus Martius, and the many shops and restaurants downtown. The hotel rooms are comfortable and the beds are very nice. The bathroom is spacious, especially the shower. Unfortunately the artwork on the 2nd floor is a bit meh, and one piece depicting Muslim women was done in extremely poor taste. My Syrian family members would have left the hotel had they seen it. The lack of coffee in the room was remedied by requesting a machine. Coffee is also served in the lobby quite early. And my last critique is that instead of an enclosed closet the bedrooms have an exposed rail with clothes hangers. I hear the hotel is undergoing a renovation shortly - I bet this will be addressed. Overall a very attractive hotel. With a few tweaks it could be a five star experience. read more

My story with the Detroit Foundation Hotel goes all the way back to when they first opened. Just a couple of months after opening, Hurricane Irma hit Florida while I was in Detroit for a Lions game. What was supposed to be a three-day stay turned into ten days, and during that difficult time the staff went above and beyond -- not only in service, but also in kindness and genuine care. Since then, every year my family and I travel from Florida for Lions games, and no matter what, we always stay at the Detroit Foundation Hotel. We just checked out again, and as always, we couldn't be happier. The food, the service, the accommodations, the rooms -- everything is consistently ten out of ten. A very chic hotel, that's a shining example of the rebuild the city of Detroit is experiencing. This hotel is the perfect example of trying too hard and not hitting a single mark. There is no thoughtfulness to the design or amenities that make a hotel comfortable and nice to stay in. There is no place to wait for people. The coffee goes out at 6a, they don't offer hot water. The bathroom is so poorly designed. There was a dried blood clot on one of my towels. There was an event above my room and people were moving furniture until 10pm. The room is cold and hard and uninviting and not comfortable. It's for looks and doesn't even look that good. read more

I really love this hotel in Downtown Detroit. It's an old Firehouse that has been converted. The rooms are large and nice, plus a little rustic on purpose. The staff is attentive, helpful and pleasant. The attached restaurant/bar (The Apparatus Room) is equally as enjoyable. If you are headed downtown and need a place to stay, I think you would enjoy the Foundation Hotel. We've stayed there twice and will continue to do so going forward. Nick, at the front desk, is WONDERFUL!!! Great welcome and he went over the restaurant downstairs with me, which he said I need a reservation, even though it wasn't crowded. Cool atmosphere downstairs at checkin. I like the bright, airy feel of the restaurant. I forgot the name of the room I have, but I thought it was pretty pricey for the small size. Over $350 bucks a night! I expected more, but, oh well. I like that there's plugins and USB's everywhere. The lighting is NOT good and only 2 mirrors, uuughhh ! They have no full-length mirrors! Thats irritating. The rug looks a bit worn down, I would not walk barefoot on it. I dig the character of the concrete floors though. Small simple shower, with nice tile, the only problem is I can smell sewage. Bathroom is SMALL- the trash can is hidden under the sink and heavy AF, lol. I feel a bit claustrophobic in here, I'm going to have to sweat it out. I did like the Shinola Hotel better, but I wanted to try something new. Oh yeah, my view is of the parking lot, which I don't mind, I'm not a "view-y" kind of chick, lol. I will make this a fantastic weekend even though my hotel room isn't what I expected. Danielle at the front desk is sweet. She has a lovely voice over the phone that makes me smile. She helped me with the air conditioner in the room that we really DO NOT control. There's no way to turn off this irritating fan blowing in the room. She had to call down to engineering for them to turn it off. THINGS NOT IN THIS HOTEL ROOM: 1. Coffee maker 2. A big enough counter to place your makeup bag 3. No robes or slippers 4. No shower cap 5. No bathtub 6. A thermostat that YOU control. Stayed at the Foundation hotel last night. Very unique experience since it is located in an old fire station. There are some vintage photos and firefighter displays scattered throughout the building to give you a glimpse into the past. I was also very impressed with the hotel staff. From valet to front desk to bar/restaurant the staff were friendly and helpful. We had dinner in the Apparatus Room on the main floor (the old garage area) and the food was very good. Within walking distance from several restaurants and bars and not far from the Fillmore and Fox Theatre. read more

If you're visiting in Detroit, this is the place to stay!! I was only there for a day, but I wish I could've stayed longer. It is a beautiful boutique hotel that is located in an historic fire station, with the doors all still intact. You definitely get the historic feel, without it feeling "dated" due to the amazing renovations. The beds were comfortable and there were multiple pillows with different firmness to appease everyone. There is a fully stocked bar with snacks, and their bath products are Grown Alchemist, which is my favorite! Highly recommend. read more

Beautiful hotel. Located in Detroit, convenient valet parking available. No idea if you had to park on the street what that would look like. I found that the decor and ambience to be beautiful throughout the hotel, and all the nice touches they put in place to create a unique visual experience throughout the hotel. The cost of the hotel for one room double bed for one night was approximately $450. The room itself did not include very much, but it was comfortable and relaxing. It was surprisingly quiet on the 3rd floor and didn't have issues with temperature as I would have expected with an older hotel. The front desk was pleasant and helpful. The valet was slow and confused, but eventually did get the job done. Overall a nice experience and would definitely stay here again if given the opportunity. read more

This is a 3 star Hotel. The overall experience is 4 star though. Its an old fire house HQ, but still looks it up close, even in the rooms. BUT it has such style! So i am conflicted. Get the Shitake mushrooms! Wow. We are not cheap but they charge $18 for a drink, so we just drank less. I dont like being gouged. Its a little insulting. Hey foundation 12x3 is 36! We got a jr. suite which was $603. Not quite worth that when we opened the door. But again it had style. Someone put some thought into it. Okay we are off to brunch which I am sure will be as great as the mushrooms! Cannot say we will stay here again. The Westin in Detroit is better for the price which we keep going back to. read more

Detroit Foundation Hotel, I hardly knew you, which I'm sad about because what I saw was awesome. I was only in Detroit for 30 hours, and this hotel provided a relaxing rest during that time. First off, this hotel is gorgeous. It's in a former firehouse, and so many of those historical details have been maintained, including the large firehouse doors you walk through to get to the lobby. And even better, this hotel does not go old-school with the rooms. These boasted super comfy beds, great TVs with Netflix connectivity, ample electrical and USB outlets in the nightstands and an awesome bathroom. One of my design pet peeves is when you have a large shower that you have walk all the way into it to turn it on, leading to you getting doused with cold water when you first turn on the faucet. This was not the case with these showers. The Wi-Fi was strong, and the art on the walls made the room very interesting. I'm hoping my work chooses for us to have our team retreat in Detroit again and that we get to stay at this hotel so that I can get to know it even better. read more

I've spent some time in the Foundation Hotel lobby and Apparatus Room restaurant but I hadn't stayed there until this past week when I was able to enjoy a week with some of my colleagues right here in Detroit. To make it easy, I got a hotel room so I wouldn't have to drive back and forth, and I couldn't have been more comfortable. The rooms are spacious and clean, the beds are so so comfortable, valet is speedy (and you have in and out privileges which is nice), and the staff is remarkably kind and helpful. I'm a light sleeper and realized I had left my ear plugs at home so I called down to the front desk and they brought up a pair to my room within minutes (although FYI I later found a pair in my bathroom in the little toiletry container along with q-tips and such). The building is amazing. It's an old firehouse and they've retained a lot of the architecture and features making the building really interesting to explore. They work with local artists and artisans to fill out the space and each room has a pretty nice spread of local products in the mini bar as well. It's Detroit through and through! Easy walking distance to the Riverfront, TCF Center, and the downtown Woodward corridor/Campus Martius. It's the perfect location to boot! Highly highly recommend! read more

Five fabulous stars for my recent two night stay and overall experience at the Detroit Foundation Hotel... I'm a Detroit girl, born and raised just miles from downtown, but I haven't lived in Michigan in about 22 years. I continue to be blown away each visit, when I see how developed and exciting the city is becoming, and this visit was no exception. My hotel stay had a lot to do with it... with super friendly service, a spacious, comfortable room, wonderful shower amenities, locally made products in the rooms, an amazing fitness center, and so much history in the building (which was formerly the Detroit Firehouse), this is definitely a new favorite hotel find! I enjoyed breakfast one morning in Apparatus Room restaurant, which was also very nice... Two nights wasn't enough and I cannot wait to return and stay here again in the future! TLDR: a fantastic stay in Detroit. ____ One of my favorite hotels I've ever stayed at was the hotel convington in Kentucky. I wasn't surprised when I found out the same company owns this hotel. They are similar in decor and how the rooms are laid out. I had a second floor room. King bed. No view, but black out shades. The bathroom was spacious including a large shower. The lobby and hotel are just beautiful. Rustic chic. Loved the lobby bar as well. Local beers for $6 all day, I enjoyed a few as we were coming and going to meetings/dinners. I hear the restaurant is good too. Staff was always super pleasant and helpful. Nice gym with an interactive hiking screen on the elliptical. Various machines and things to do to get a good workout in while you're here for work or pleasure. read more

This hotel blew out of the water. I'm a sucker for repurposed historical building in the first place but it was their knock out customer service that won my heart in the end. Detroit Foundation Hotel once served as s fire department but now features a hotel, restaurant (The Apparatus Room), podcast recording studio for the community, private dining space and small conference rooms. The hotel also features a workout studio, mini gift shop in the lobby and small shared library for guests. A few other nuggets about the DFH that make it five star-worthy: -a complimentary coffee cart every morning featuring locally roasted beans and Rishi tea -top notch bathroom amenities (always a bonus when they provide makeup remover) -great walkability to Downtown attractions -the friendly staff I mentioned in the beginning of my review -local ingredients on the dining menu read more

We stayed here for our anniversary and we're not disappointed. From the moment we pulled up, the staff makes you feel special. We shared that we were celebrating and the front desk staff was kind enough to send us up a bottle of champagne and a rose. No detail is spared. The rooms are stylish and trendy. The elevators are lined with leather. You can tell a lot of thought was put into the decor and the design. And they honor the history, with little rid bits here and there. The location is perfect. Within walking distance to the riverfront and so many downtown jaunts. We had an excellent stay and would highly recommend this place to anyone looking to rest their head in the D. read more

Have had great luck of decent with hotel choices and this one is tops. It's a really handsome place that doesn't feel cookie cutter like the more corporate chains. Big red wooden doorways, giant windows, and original fire poles and tiled walls are only part of what makes this place a gem. The well-appointed room and restaurant (The Apparatus), the hotel desk agent's attentiveness, and details like the stitched leather in the elevators or the sitting area adjacent to the hallways put this place over the top. Had a wonderful stay at the Foundation Hotel! Friendly staff, all the amenities you need, and comfy beds make this a true five star experience. This trendy hotel is in the heart of Detroit's downtown scene and boasts an immaculate lobby bar and restaurant, while really capitalizing on all of the amazing things about the city's history. My room was chic and included a private bar, makeup remover wipes (big win!), and higher end toiletries. The second floor gym is basic, but a great way to sneak a run in before heading out to work for the day. They accommodated early check in and were quick with words about the hotel's history and why it is so special. Definitely the best surprise in Detroit. What a cool boutique hotel.. First off, the hotel is super cool. The rooms are great...Good size and comfortable beds. I was headquartered here for a week and the hotel restaurant has this cool large area where we people eat, work, talk and a cool buzz is always happening in the hotel. The restaurant which serves breakfast, lunch and dinner is terrific. Great quality food and ingredients. We hosted a dinner for 15 people one of the nights and hotel/ restaurant team did an exceptional job. Let's start with the good. The hotel is nicely appointed, save for the lack of bathrobes or house slippers, which you will wish you had to walk on the rug (I'll get to that later). I really loved the scent of the bath gel and lotion. Now on to the bad. I check into the room and it's DUSTY - as if the room hadn't been used in quite a while. Photos attached but it was worse in real life. Even the bar food and glasses had dust all over. The rug in the room appeared filthy. You can see the original color right at the edge of the beds. I did not want to walk on it and wished they provided slippers. Then you have to pay for every little thing, they won't even give you water. When I asked for late check out I was informed I'd have to pay for another day just to stay in the room for an extra hour! The hotel was empty but I figured out why they do this. They only have the cleaning crew for an extremely limited time so they need guests out right away no matter how empty the hotel is. This explains the dust. Speaking of the cleaning crew, check out is at noon, but the cleaning crew barged in at 11:40 AM, and then again at 11:50 AM knocking and asking if we are still here. At this point I'm like let's just leave this hotel. So we go to check out and as I was waiting, the front desk man walks around and taps my arm which felt inappropriate and was unprofessional. I did not enjoy this hotel at all. I wish I stayed at The Siren instead which is my usual go to. While The Foundation Hotel is in a good location for conferences, they do not think long term as far guest services are concerned, especially considering that business travelers can bring the hotel more business through referrals. And they need to start dusting, shampooing the rugs, and making sure things like glasses are clean. You can't position yourself as one of the nicer hotels in Detroit and fail at the basics. I will not recommend this hotel to anyone. read more

I wish I could give this place more stars because it really is a beautifully done hotel but if you are looking for a good night sleep this is not the place. I stayed on the second floor but basically felt like I was sleeping in the parking lot. The amount of noise that was coming in from a drunk girl screaming nonstop lasted what seemed like forever, plus the sound of revving engines had me up all night. Whenever it did get quiet the room itself had a lot of noise coming from the plumbing above and random building noise. Did not feel like the bed was comfortable, could have maybe just been the pillows but my body aches from sleeping on the bed there. Obviously city noise is completely normal but I've never experienced this type of noise level in all my city travels. Really do like this place but needs to be sound proofed at the very least read more

What an impressive and special hotel. It may be one of my favorite hotels I've ever stayed in in terms of hospitality, comfort, style and location. I'd come back in a heartbeat. The hotel is just beautiful. As a former firehouse, its fascinating to see some historical elements still in-tact. On my floor, there was also a mini-museum of interesting Detroit Fire Department artifacts like uniforms and hydrants. I briefly took a walk through the hotel and noticed other fabulous touches like a gym with Pelotons, a cool local maker gift shop in the lobby and more. I also give tremendous props for their great art and lovely holiday decorations. The minute I entered my room, I breathed a sigh or relief. Traveling is hard for me because I live with chronic pain, and the minute I plopped on the bed I felt at home. The mattress in a hotel is very important to me. This is one of the only hotels I've ever stayed in and was actually completely comfortable! Top to bottom, it was a great stay. read more

I heart you, DFH! This was a great spot to stay while in Detroit. The rooms are huge and decorated with that mid-century look, but still felt cozy and warm to be in. I especially loved shower. A larger steamer shower is a great way to start the day. From what I heard this hotel used to be a old firehouse which is so cool! Once I was told that I kept looking around trying to spot those sneaky firehouse details. The lobby bar boasts a decent list of cocktails, wines and beer and small menu for snacking. Just on the other side of the bar was a full on sit down area for lunch and dinner dining. The coffee bar in the morning was my favorite, all because of one worker, Ashley! I ordered some ice for my coffee one morning and the very next day she made me cold brew coffee! She did this the next two days I stayed at the hotel. Love you, Ashley! The location of the hotel is great for walkable bars, restaurants, night life, and even a Christmas shopping village. If you're looking to go to Canada, it's literally across the river. Although I wouldn't recommend walking around in December. I believe one morning it was 16', yikes! It's a great hotel and I would totally stay here again! read more

Beautiful hotel with amazing history. Located right next to the TCF Center (formerly / always will be COBO Hall), a block from the river, and within eyesight of Canada. They did a great job of preserving this old firehouse and turning it into a hotel and restaurant. Staff was exceptionally accommodating. Rooms were clean and comfortable. Really neat spot on the 4th floor dedicated to the history of the firehouse and the Detroit FD. The hotel has a restaurant located in the lobby, The Apparatus Room. There are several other restaurants and coffee shops within walking distance as well. Valet parking was located next door for $35 overnight.
