My six year old wanted me to cut her dreadlocks. I did like an idiot listening to a 5 year old at the time. She had been sporting an afro for a few months, i felt it was time for a new do. I attempted to braid her hair with no success because she cried like someone was killing her. I decided to take her to get her hair done professionally. I searched for braiding salons within my location and De'unique came up with 4 stars on yelp. I decided to give them a try. I called the day before, and spoke with MiMi, she told me to bring my daughter in at 2pm the next day. I did. We waited for 2 1/2 hours until my daughter was seen. It was bitter sweet, because at this point I had time to look at everyone's completed work. All of the braid technicians were very good. At this point i didn't mind the wait. My daughter was finally called. No crying, No showing off. She played movies on her tablet. 4hours later my little girl was looking so cute with her box braids. I posted a pic for everyone to see on yelp. The technician did a great job (forgot her name). That may be her in the Store image above, not sure. There was a father there with his 2 little toddlers, bless his heart. His girls screamed for about 2 hours and Mimi still maintained her professionalism while tending to both girls. DO NOT GO HERE!!! Do not waste your time or your money coming to this shop. The women who work here know how to cheat you out of what you ask for and overcharge you at the same time. When they braid your hair, they have your back to the mirror so you can't see how big your braids are. They use more hair than necessary and than charge you for the extra packets. I am writing this review out of anger and frustration. Braids are expensive and as a customer, I pay what is asked of me, I tip, I don't complain and still I get taken advantage of. I made an appointment for crotchet braids and spoke with a woman who was very nice and pleasant on the phone. I confirmed my appointment and was excited based on the reviews. I went in and they immediately started to take out my braids and wash it - Love a prompt session. I move to the next chair to start my crotchet braids and she braided it like a weave in a circle pattern. I questioned her, and she offered to do it the usual way of corn rows to the back; I decided nope, let her do her thing because hey.. what do I know about hair braiding. She starts and not braiding tight and I was happy with it ( however, stylists might want to engage with the customer vs. talking to each other for 4 hours ) I finally get done and my hair has over 50+ random fly aways and I question her and she says they will lay down over time ( but in the mean time I am constantly trying to push it down and over to make sure it is decent for work etc... ) I call back and tell her I want to take it out and she says she can try to cut the fly aways out and in my mind I am like if you cut the fly aways my hair will slip out when brushed, combed etc.. so I just went elsewhere to get it re-done ( what a waste of $150 ) I guess I should have waited for Mimi to return from maternity leave. read more

This was my first time at the salon, I made an appointment over the phone with MiMi for senegalese twists. On the day of my appointment; I received a call/text to confirm I would arrive. MiMi was there when I arrived and was ready to start on my hair. The salon is very professional, clean and most of all friendly. Mimi started on my hair and then another woman finished. I must say I am very pleased with the services I received. I'd also like to add that my hair was not tight at the roots; which was refreshing. I was concerned about my edges because near my temples my hair is always thin and told MiMi about it; she was extra gentle in that area when braiding. AWFUL AWFUL and totally unprofessional. I made an appointment weeks in advance. Called the morning of to confirm, since I never got a confirmation call. I had never gotten braids before so I asked for a consultation, asked if I need to purchase hair, and confirmed my time. I was told that they had hair at the shop I buy and to be there on time! When I arrived, the person wasn't there and NO, they DID NOT have hair available. I left to buy the hair and when I got back, the hair stylist STILL wasn't there! I waited an hour an a half!!! On top of that, she took another client before me! Under the threat of walking out, I was finally seen! Over 3 hours later my hair was done. The quality of work was even subpar! The corn rows (I got crotchet) were exposed and after only 2 weeks started to unravel so the crotchet started falling out. DO. NOT. GO. HERE! read more

My second time at De Unique, this time I got the full sew in done by MiMi... turned out pretty good.

I went here because my regular person was booked and I needed to get my dreadlocks tighten. First of all, when I got there the washed my hair only once. Then one person started on my hair and left and asked another if she could finish for her. By the time the second person was finished it was a total mess. They only re-twisted the new growth, the ends were fat and lumpy. Then the locks that they considered "weak" the knotted together on the ends and not the entire lock. I still have a knot in my hair from this experience. I have learned now to ask more question besides, "do you do natural hair?". I would never go back and I would NEVER recommend them to anyone who has natural hair maintenance. read more

So I can't thank Jamie enough for taking the time with our three year old. It was her first time getting her hair done and she is not the easiest. She is very busy, doesn't sit still and hates having her hair done. Jamie somehow managed to get it done. We will take our daughter back to Jamie in hopes that after a few times she will get use to it. My oldest is also getting her hair done today and it is the weekend before school starts. The salon is busy, but our appointments were at 10 am and we were out before noon. Jamie did a great job with both those kids and I will be going back for braids. After seeing the 4 star reviews here, I thought I would give this place a try. This is a nice, clean shop, but I was disappointed with the results. I wanted a simple style that typically takes about an hour to do and the stylist rushed through like she didn't feel like doing it, and my hair looked like it. My experience here is always bitter sweet. My hair always looks nice, but I don't enjoy the dirty, callous looks that a few of the stylists give. The stand-offish attitudes make patrons uncomfortable. Customers are paying for a service...they could at least treat them professionally. There is one with a very nasty attitude. I tiredlessly searched the internet looking for salons for women of color in my area of Virginia. I live in Clifton, and unfortunately there aren't many of us in this area. While shopping in Manassas Park a few months ago, I ran into a woman with beautiful braids. She gave me the name of her stylist, and interestingly enough, it was the salon I found on the web, and thought about calling, but knew nothing about. The stylist was MiMi! She has since done my hair twice, and I've received many compliments. Thank you MiMi I don't want to share her, because she is my secret, and I'm afraid it will become difficult to get an appointment with her after I do. However, business is business, and I will tell you that De'Unique is a nice salon. It's clean, and welcoming. The other ladies seem to be sweet as well, but I've only had the pleasure of MiMi as my stylist for braids, and they are not strickly a braiding salon. The one true thing that stands out for me is the kindness and the prices. The first time I went to De'Unique, I had the wrong hair for my style. Although they sell hair in the salon, this particular hair was not. MiMi took me to the beauty store, and helped me find the hair I needed. She went above what she was required to do as a stylist, and I appreciate it. The prices are much better than DC salons. You come out of this salon able to pay rent afterwards. Lol... One more thing: you don't have to search the neighborhood for parking. There is ample spaces for all. My husband loves my hair, and I love De'Unique. Thank you MiMi. read more

There's a barber shop here! Took my 8yr old Son to get a cut. Aaron is the barber. We waited a bit but that's because Aaron has quite a few loyal customers that have followed him to his new spot. That, alone, speaks volumes about his skills and service. My Son was very happy with his cut and I will be returning. They do accept appointments....so call ahead to get on his schedule. I decided to go to this salon based on all the great reviews. BIG MISTAKE!!! My hairstyle lasted a week. An inexperienced braider started my hairstyle and MIMI had to finish the style. The braider braided my hair so tight she had to take it out and restart. Mimi rushed through finishing my style to get to her next client. Slow down remember quality over quantity! My head had different size braids. The quality of the hair at the shop is cheap. Bring your own hair for individual styles. Never again will I go to this salon nor recommend anyone. I made an appointment to have braids removed, hair washed and detangled etc. In other words, I wanted typical hair maintenance after having worn braids for 2+ months. She removed the braids, but gosh she was heavy handed!!! And I didn't expect to have my hair "dry combed" while removing braids. They may specialize in braiding hair. However, judging from the rough manner in which my hair was handled, I left with the impression that they were clueless about kinky hair care maintenance/handling. On the flip side, the ladies were nice, I was able to get a last minute appointment for braid removal, and the salon was new & nice. However I won't return, as I had to cut my appointment short due to the roughness of the technician's hands on my sensitive scalp. read more

Took my five year old here last week for braids. Stylist was late but not by much time(15 minutes). She was very apologetic and explained her babysitter was late. She was patient with my daughter who tends to squirm and cry out with the detangling, washing and braiding process. She even gave me tips and product advice for easier detangling at home. This is the FIRST time ever I have walked out of a shop from getting micros and my head didn't hurt nor did it look like I had a face lift. I'm currently in the Military and relocated to the Dumfries/Woodbridge area. I'm natural and needed a reliable person to braid my hair. I called De'unique and was greeted in a very professional manner. I made my appointment and she informed me that she does MILITARY DISCOUNTS. I was sold because she APPRECIATE the services that we provide for this country. I couldn't wait to have the serves provided. I walked in the salon and was Greeted and she told me she would be right with me. I didn't have time to become bored or aggravated because her service with the previous client was ending. A few seconds later it was time for my services to be rendered. The fact that she did not talk over my head while trying to wash my hair meant she was engaged in her job and showed a great deal of discipline and professionalism. When she started braiding my hair, their were several calls to her, but they were all business related. She didn't try to braid my hair to the point where my eyes would connect to my ears either (braiding too tight). She was quick and I enjoyed my braids and style. I went here for Senegalese twists and they did a HORRIBLE job. They had two girls doing my hair. The girl that did the back started all the twists off as braids and then started twisting about an inch down. She clearly doesn't really know how to do twists. They looked like some weird mix of corn rows, braids, and twists. I guess that is why they had her only do half. Also, the lengths were all different, they did most of them much short than the length I agreed to in the beginning. I could barely put them in a ponytail and they were supposed to lower back length. Not worth the $200 I spent at all! I will never go here again! read more

This shops braiding technique is different (I tried Bee's Braiding down the street as well and prefer them). But their technique has some type of knot at the base of the braid that I'm not crazy about. One braid fell out the first week but I haven't had anymore fall out. The shop was really nice though, and I had 2 people working on my head at the same time pretty much the entire length of my stay (hence I finished one hour earlier). Update 7/2014: I've been back here multiple times since the original review and they are my go to now for braids. Besides that one braid the very first time, I haven't had any more braids come out. Plus, I've learned to get the very first appt during the week. I'll be out in less than 5 hours. And I have very thick hair. I really like this shop. read more

I went to get my hair corn rowed and I had an appointment. The shop was clean my braids were nice and neat. My complaint is about the staff I would appricate it if they spoke English and not in their native lanuage the entire time. Also it took way too long to get some simple corn rows done. 4hours to do a 1- 2hour job. The braider kept stopping and working on another head while trying to finish my hair. So I give 3stars and i hope the owner reads this review and promotes better scheduling of clients and customer service. Thanks read more

Several of my family members have been here before. So i have seen their work before going myself... Finally went to get some Senegalese twist expecting to see the same great results. Whomp Whomp!! I feel like they rushed through my head, its not as full as I imagined you can see my scalp -_- Idk I dislike it, & dont feel like it was worth the $190 they charged me. I'm used to the hairdresser using more than 3 packs of hair they barely even used that!! I probly wont be going there again... Alot of my twist dont look like the other ones, and some of them look "ragged" - The customer service... sucked as well !!!! read more

I made an appointment with Jamie to get Micros to my damaged hair. Jamie did not advise me to get micros because they would slip out quickly. However, she did recommend that I get individual braids using a different type of hair. I took her advice and I'm happy with the outcome. I will go back. read more

Welp Jamie definitely has me as a customer....The De'Unique in WOODBRIDGE. Appt was at noon and shampoo girl washed & conditioned my hair (fingers were awesome). Got blow dried and Jamie started on my hair mind you she was working on another head too. However, I didn't mind the wait and the other workers were just as good. Jamie and I made small talk and she was halfway finished and went back and finished the head she had started before me...she explained to me that she was going to finish up her hair then finish with my head. Ok fine no problem. Finally the wait was over and she finished up and the final finish was awesome. Better than the pix I showed her. All the ladies in the shop does good work...not a lot of chit chatting and talking and so forth...straight about the business... My 4C hair was exceptionally nice. Good prices and not breaking the bank. In by 12 out by 3:30. Not bad for a Saturday afternoon at a braid shop working on two heads at one time.Good work Jamie, see ya in a month. read more

The bottom line is the women there have skills. However, despite sending a picture of a natural, soft, twist style (no bald spots or big patches of scalp showing) I wanted, I did not get that look. I had also requested brown hair color before my appt. I got a different look. Their prices are $30 higher if you use shop's hair rather than bringing your own, so I trusted that they had the hair. I got synthetic, hard looking, darker hair. I had to request that my hair be recolored when the first color job did not work. Two women braided my hair. I asked for the hair in the picture and #2 braid color, and I was told at the shop that they did not have either and that the style of braiding I wanted would not last. I said ok. Once two women were done braiding, there were big bald sports. A braider laughed when saying I had thinning hair, so that was why there were bald spots after the twist styles. I know that's not true having braided my own hair and having others do it. Braiders can braid in certain way to cover thinning areas. I talked to owner about my unhappiness and she redid the big spots areas to her credit, while talking about my thinning hair in front of others and family. I was there for most of the day on a job that should have taken 4 or 5 hours maybe. When I got home, my hair itched and my shirt collar had a lot of hair dye on it. I think this shop has potential yet should not have had unskilled person applying color nor should they agree to do a picture and then not do the picture. read more
