I loved visiting this nursery! They had such a great variety of plants, shrubs, etc. that I felt like a kid in a candy store! Lol When you visit, bring your contractor with you since this is for wholesale only. They have sections of shaded plants and those that receive full sun. Everything aas well labeled and easy to find. Porta Potties are available for your use. Once we gathered all of the plants needed, a guy came and checked them out and created a bill. I then met him at the cashier window to pay. What a hassle this place has become. The lost a long time customer and future recommendations. The sales guy is rude and unhelpful. Also the prices are not low and I would suggest to go online for better pricing, larger selection, and no hassle from sales people who clearly don't like there job. I was very excited to visit this nursery. It was gigantic and the selection was expansive. I have never seen such varieties. I was very excited until I checked out and had a bill higher than what I expected. I was told by my landscaper that the plants are usually cheaper than big box stores but it actually cost the same if not more. The plants are already loaded in your car per their directions and they don't make it easy for you to just check prices. There are no price tags so just shop like you have the funds.... I guess. I was asked by my landscaper to select the plants I wanted. When we initially went there the plants I selected looked healthy. The plants that were delivered to the house were dying, roses infected with fungus, and in poor condition. Their prices aren't that much better. They have a large selection but it's not worth the headache or the bait and switch I feel I experienced. I will not be using this business again. This nursery is the de facto nursery for most of the landscapers in our tri-valley area and they act like the monopoly that they are. They don't have good service. They don't have good prices. They don't have the most robust healthy plants. They don't exchange nor guarantee the plants. They don't want to answer any questions and don't like it when you ask them to replace a bad shaped plant in your order that does not look healthy. We need some real competition. read more

They don't have an exchange policy. We bought 40 hydrangeas and 40 jasmine. Planted them, 5 died within 2 days. I called. They aren't willing to exchange or replace because it's wholesale pricing. I'm not going away. The next part is see what hydrangeas cost at Alden Lane and one other nursery that has an exchange policy and see what the price difference is. The answer of wholesale price doesn't make sense to me because I bet I will find out that my hydrangea that cost 35 at devil mountain is 42 at Alden Lane so it's a chicken shit answer quite frankly. I have been doing business with Devil Mountain for 20 years . I am a licensed Landscape Architect and a licensed general contractor. I'm also a licensed landscape contractor. This Wholesale nursery is for licensed contractors only. If you do not have a contractors license, you are not allowed to purchase from Devil Mountain . Any ( non contractor ) leaving a bad review here because they were disappointed by the customer service is not leaving a valid review. I have worked in the Nursery industry. The customer service work is a huge part of it. I spent long days answering questions to homeowners about plants. Devil mountain is very clear upfront that they are not a retail Nursery. By doing this they are able to focus on Licensed contractors, and Landscape Architect like myself who are consistently doing significant projects. When I read a review like the one left by Raylee saying that she called there for free advice about nematodes in her lawn, it makes me wonder if she realizes that the person who answered the phone may have been working on the order that I needed pricing for. Devil Mountain is not just a nursery. It is a brokerage. If I communicate with them in advance they can get me anything I want. Other people leaving reviews here saying that their prices are the same as Home Depot might want to try emailing the Home Depot three weeks in advance with a very specific plant order specifying the genus species and cultivar and see how that works out. Devil Mountain is not perfect but as a business owner, I have a lot of respect for this organization. Love the variety of this place and it has great prices, especially for 25 gallon trees that you won't find as easily at other local nurseries and garden centers. There are several acres here - so be prepared to walk around over the course of your selection process. Suggestion : If you can, go there a few times prior to making your final selection. The best time to visit is actually an early weekday morning when it's not so crowded and the office staff can let you use your car to traverse the area. Get a map from the front office about where the specific trees you want are located and then look around a LOT. Look for multi-stem trees- they are the most elegant when growing. They are more expensive, but are well worth the extra cost if you want a stand out tree. Bring your cellphone and take pictures of the trees and their TAGS. (This way you can match specific names if your landscaper or garden designer is not with you and you can edit the list to make your final selection.) After you head home - or go to a nearby Starbucks - you can look up the names of the trees online to see if they would be a good match for your garden. ( Read for info on mature height, fall color, hardiness, soil and light needs. ) This is exactly what I did and I ended up with four of the most beautiful trees. These are trees I was not previously familiar with but am thrilled to have. (I also avoided buying a gorgeous - but unsuitable - fast growing tree that would've reached over 25-30 feet.) My trees are thriving in my yard and I couldn't be happier. read more

Plants were poor quality and much more expensive than the local nursery and Home Depot. We did an extensive backyard project and our contractor used devil mountain for the plants. The plants were very poor quality. Several of them were dead when they were brought to our house. The remainder of the plants were extremely small and much more expensive than what we would have gotten from our local nursery. All the plants we ordered were relatively well varieties in our area. We would have saved significant money and gotten larger, better quality plants if we had just gone to Home Depot. I do not recommend this place. read more

Customer service is really starting to suck at Devil Mountain. Everyone waits in lines outside and there's 8x11 flyers all over the windows so it's like they don't see or acknowledge that there are people waiting. Customers walk in and people in line are questioning if they should just walk in too and get faster service. I LOVE this nursery! It is WHOLESALE only so if you want to go, you have to be in "the business" or call a local landscaper and see if they will take you. You HAVE to know what you are looking for and there is a nice map in the office, explaining where certain varietals are located! This place is HUGE! What a hidden gem in San Ramon. You can find pretty much any plant here but will need an account or have your contractor/landscaper/property manager to purchase. The selection is wonderful and I found the staff to be extremely helpful. This is a wholesale facility so it is meant for landscaping contractors and professionals. I met my contractor here and he arranged for Ernard (sp?) to drive us around and help pick the best quality plants and trees. He was extremely knowledgeable and such a help - this man knows his plants! If you are a lay person with very little landscaping knowledge, I would suggest you bring your contractor or designer with you. This place is overwhelming and will not allow purchase unless you are represented by a professional...hence the "wholesale" part. Excellent pricing and very competitive for this area. I did a lot of research on cost and this place saved me over 10% what I budgeted, even after I changed my selection of 15 gal Evergreen Pear trees to the larger 24". Only negative I have is that they rang up our order incorrectly - quantity error that I caught as we were driving away. However, they let us back in (even after closing at 12pm on Sat) and took care of the error immediately. To be fair, we had a large order and it was an honest mistake. The fact that they were willing to open back up even after the place was closed in order to correct it speaks highly of their customer service. The selection of this place - wow! I was sure I would have to special order some of the varietals I wanted (which they are happy to do if you can't find what you need) but was pleasantly surprised to find that they had every single plant on my list in the color/type I specified. read more

I had a professional landscaper work on my garden and he recommended this place. Wow...so much larger than any nursery I have ever been to. I think they don't want to spend a lot of time answering questions, so that's why they want you to enter only if your landscaper is with you. I chose all the plants I wanted with guidance and advice from my landscaper. The wait to make my actual purchase was longer than I like, but it was worth it. And "voila!" a few days later my landscaper appeared with all the plants and proceeded to plant them. If you're not using a professional landscaper and want to talk about your purchase options, this may not be the place for you. But if you want wholesale prices and an incredibly large selection, I'd recommend you try this place with your landscaper. read more

I Would Rather Buy My Trees from the Actual Satan * Non-existent customer service (Hi Amy) * Half of our plants deteriorated in less than 90 days * No recourse or response or sympathy (no response to my letter which was somehow "lost") * Home Depot, Lowes, and virtually any other nursery are better bets. They also have one-year return policies, unlike the Devil. They always say that the devil is in the "details", and I can not recommend Devil Mountain to anyone. This review has been three years in the making, but every time I pass by I get angry for the way they treated us. I feel an emptiness in my soul. First off, you need to have a landscaper or someone who is "sanctioned" to buy from them, meaning no direct consumer access. In many ways, this is a blessing in disguise, because paying top dollar for soon to be dead plants is not a very good value proposition for consumers. :-) Our landscaper "trusted" them, just like I "trusted" Rod Blagojevich. We bought a few thousand dollars worth of items, they were installed properly, and then plant cemetery took place a month later. I will say that Devil Mountain hires a lot of people who are very nice and attractive when you buy things from them. Unfortunately, they don't smile as much when you have to return the defective products. Amy was my contact, and she gave me every run around you can. "Your landscaper needs to be here and dispute this" He did. "You installed them the wrong way." What is the right way? "Your bald" Oh. Well, you got me there. She did not say the last one, and even if she did I could not censure her for it. Everyone knows that having hair on your head is much more advantageous than having none at all. What really irks me is that I sent a letter to the owner telling him about our experience, and trying to find some common ground shortly afterward. We were really excited to visit with our landscaper for the first plants purchased for our new house. The customer service was really lacking. Front desk didn't know how to use computer. Plant specialists made us feel let down because of our lack of plant knowledge. Spent good money, but two of the more expensive apple trees never sprouted and have died and once you plant, there are no returns. I think there focus is more apartment complex and freeway plants rather than residential. read more

My landscaper has had a lot of trouble getting our plant order filled here. I think it depends on which sales person you get, but our guy doesn't return emails or calls. You have to go there in person and wait and they only let you deal with your assign sales person. It's been over a month and our order is still not complete. It's fine that some plants are not available , but it requires communication to to select alternative plants. So frustrating! read more

I need to update my review since I have used them a few more times since 5/2011, when I initially reviewed Devil Mountain Nursery. There are a number of times where Devil Mountain Nursery sent the wrong plants or, just as painful, when they sent half of your plants, but failed to tell you the rest of the plants are out of stock (even though you checked the order a day or two earlier). I guess why I am finally complaining is I sent an order in via e-mail on Monday and sent another e-mail on Thursday to ask for an update. I finally get a call from the nursery and the professional on the phone tells me he does not have time to answer my questions and I can go on-line to order my plants. After I go to register on-line, I don't get a password or a way to use the site, and when I call back to ask for a way to get this fixed no one responds. Seriously???? I guess, what I am trying to say is, the customer service has definitely gone down hill. And I am a customer who has spend thousands of dollars with them. I must say overall the plants have been high quality, but getting the plants has become painful if you do it via delivery. read more

This place is only good if you want to see the plants and get an idea of what you want to get a head of time. As far as buying from them, it's the worst. Their customer service is only good when you want to purchase but as soon as you run into an issue, they will do everything they can to turn you away and not take any responsibility. Also the quality of their plants is extremely hit or miss. That's probably why they appear to be cheaper than other nurseries but if you have to keep replacing your plants/trees, trust me, it adds up to the same price as paying a better nursery. I had contracted with a Bay View Tree service company to install a 24 inch box fruitless olive tree. Since the tree is a small investment I asked the tree service owner if I would be able to visit Devils Mountain and pick out the tree of my choice. He made arrangements with sales person Cheri for me to go to the nursery and pick out the tree for later purchase and pickup. I drove 40 minutes to the the nursery on a Thursday, checked in and was given a tag to attach to the tree of my choice. I was told to return to the office if I tagged a tree and identify the specific location so it could be "pulled" from the lot. I thought okay this place seems organized. I trekked to one of the furthest areas to where the olive trees were located. I have to say the pickings were extremely slim. I immediately was thankful that I personally drove out since I didn't want to be provided with a unattractive lob sided olive tree. After 20-30 minutes I decided on only of two nicely structured trees. I tagged the box as instructed with the name of the tree service business, took a photo of both the tree and identifying aisle location. I then went back to the office checked in again and gave them the information. I asked the woman working the desk at the nursery when the tree would be pulled so it would not be sold. She said later that afternoon. This was a Thursday. I told her the tree service business would pick it up or arrange for delivery on the following Tuesday (5days later). She said "No worries. We call the tree service business and let them know they have a tree to pick up and they have a window period of which they have to pick it up or have it delivered." I left thinking all was fine. Wrong! Bay View tree service calls the morning of delivery saying that Devils Mountain will be out Tuesday morning to deliver the olive tree I picked out. Then Bay View would properly plant the young olive. When the Devils Mountain delivery person showed up to my home, he didn't have an olive tree to deliver. What!? I call Cheri at the delivery persons suggestion only to be told that the olive tree I picked out couldn't be located and that it may have been sold. Further never did they notify Bayview Tree service of the missing tree or if they did it was very last minute. I waited half a day for delivery only to have delivery truck show up with out an olive tree. I guess what added injury to insult, the sales person Cheri was very indifferent and actually seemed agitated with me for the tree being misplaced, or sold. I'm sure this review won't impact Devils Mountain wholesale nursery however I want to share this disappointing experience with a business who demonstrates indifference to customer service. read more

I remember when I first discovered this nursery 2 years ago, I read all the negative reviews and was expecting the "nursery nazi" which was quite different from my first experience. Everyone from the workers about the nursery, the front desk and gate attendant were very nice and supportive. I thought maybe I got luck on on good day so did not write a review. 6 visits later including having my contractor pickup a large order for client (selected by her "designer") only to find out they were wrong plants for location and had to return a full load of plants, it couldn't be any easier and the guys even helped unload and refund/credit was painless. I've been in there several times asking for recommendations and they were always helpful, sometimes busy but always helpful. Their prices are comparable to Home Depot but their selection is SIGNIFICANTLY better in variety and quantity then home depot (who only gets surplus plants from nurseries). So if you want to be pampered, go to an overpriced RETAIL nursery and they'll be glad to help you out because when you pay 50% more, there's built in labor to kiss customers butts - and there's nothing wrong with that if you pay for it. Finally if you can't find a plant/tree/shrub here, it doesn't really exist in the region. read more

First off, you need a landscaper to purchase here. They are not there to help you make plant selections as it is wholesale. If you are purchasing trees or landscaping a whole yard, this is the place to shop! I called around specifically for Swan Hill Olive Trees and the prices at local nurseries were either the same for something smaller or they didn't even have them. For the record, Swan Hill is the only one that should not produce a bunch of messy fruit. Great selection on every other kind of plant you prefer and they can also special order. No guarantees on the plants though, so something to keep in mind. Best prices though! read more

Devil Mountain is a wholesale outfit that prefers to deal in volume, and that's about all you can say about them. They simply sell plants at a modest discount, without any consumer protections like a return policy or some limited guarantee of success. The staff has zero interest in offering any of the amenities of a retail business. If you are working with a contractor, you will get a bit of a break on prices, but absolutely no assurance that your plant(s) will survive (the no-returns policy has already been mentioned). It is perhaps more satisfying than buying at Home Depot or Walmart, because the plants all appear to be in better shape than what you'd see in the average Home Depot and their inventory is far greater. I suppose there is also something about the exclusivity of buying wholesale, but that's not of any practical value. With all due respect, the twenty plus years of experience to which Paul K. refers means nothing to a landscaper's client. DM doesn't offer any services to the prospective owners of the products they sell, so there's no way any of that experience can be of significant benefit. Your services are all provided by the contractor that represents you in the sale. (I don't understand the comment about Navlet's being out of business -- they are here: http://www.navletsgardens.com/locations.html -- maybe he refers to a different business?) [UPDATE: Navlets was bought by Sloats around Jan 2016. I believe they intended to keep all store locations open.] Personally, I advise doing your homework on the Internet, talking to landscapers, gardeners, other homeowners and generally educating yourself on what you want to achieve. Then develop a relationship with the folks at a local retail nursery or two (there are many fine ones in the Bay Area), and then buy from them. You'll pay a bit more, but your chances of success are greatly improved. In summary, you can gain a modest price advantage with Devil Mountain, but you also take a significant risk that some or all of your investment will wind up in the green bin. The staff is seemingly proud of not offering customer service, and that is pretty much inexcusable, even in a wholesale business. Terrible, terrible customer service. Actually, non-existent, since they would not even talk to me -the lay public- and wanted me to leave my credit card information on their voicemail! Amy had the audacity to call my landscape designer and tell her that she would not speak with me. Who does this? After finding out that it would take 4 days for them to substitute plants that were backordered, we wanted to cancel the order because we did not have the luxury of waiting. They wanted to charge my landscaper $120 to restock because of their lack of inventory. Also, their prices are not that good -you can get within a few dollars of the price at most of the major retailers, and you can also take the plants back if they fail! read more
