Was good! Got takeout on a Saturday afternoon and it appeared to be the only option. The restaurant is located on a busy Bloomfield Ave. street so takeout is challenging with limited parking options. The food was really good and reasonably priced - especially compared to similar restaurants in the area. Called to place an order and it was ready 15 mins later. Tough choice since ackee and saltfish is harder to find than jerk chicken, but I'm glad I followed the crowd and got the chicken. Jam-packed with secret ingredients, it has a tricky two-step effect where the spice level seems to get higher on subsequent bites. The cabbage is a fine counterpoint. Dev's came highly recommended from a fellow foodie friend. Sadly, my anticipation was better than my experience. Still, I've yet to find any authentic DELICIOUS jamaican cuisine that's better than (the overly commercialized & no longer good) Golden Krust chain. The cabbage was good, maybe even borderline excellent. The rice&peas were decent. But the main thing, the curry chicken - it was dry. And not just because of lack of sauce - the chicken itself was dry. It didn't taste bad (thankfully), it was not inedible. It was just incredibly DRY!!! It was difficult to thoroughly enjoy and finish. Overall, I likely wouldn't go back. And initially I was so hungry that I was going to try quite a few menu items, as a first time patron, but I am glad that I chose differently. Simple but not that great. By far the best Jamaican food I've had in New Jersey. I can only speak for the curry goat since that's all we've ordered so far, but will definitely be back to try the oxtail and other items. The goat has just the right amount of spice and very little fat. Dev's is a 40+ drive from where we live but well worth the trip to pick up and will be something to look forward to the next time we order. read more

I am writing this review at 7:55pm on October 8, 2025. We picked up what was supposed to be a large oxtail with rice and peas, stewed cabbage and plantains. The cost of this takeout meal was $28. First, the size of the container was not large. It was a medium sized container ( the one used for rotis). The worker/lady/owner? brought the food out already wrapped in a paper bag. When I arrived home and opened the bag, I truly felt robbed, with no recourse. The meal included only three pieces of oxtails, with rice, gravy, cabbage and plantains in a medium, round foil container. We live in Wayne, so it is a considerable ride to return to the restaurant in Bloomfield. So, my only recourse is to write a review. Who pays $28 for three pieces of oxtail? I guess, we do. My advice to the owner is that you should value and treat your customers better. This behavior is extremely disrespectful to working people! If you ran out of oxtail, you should have informed us that you were out, not presenting the food wrapped in a bag so we wouldn't know what we were given. My advice to customers, please ask to see the portions that you are given before you leave the store. If I had done that, I would have certainly walked away without taking the food. I am so very upset by this that I informed my husband that I had no appetite and that he should have it for himself. The original plan was for us to share the large meal. Very unsuspecting place when you first walk in but the food actually really good. Jerk chicken has great flavor and the large is a good enough size for 2 people. My husband did mention he wished the chicken was spicier. Rice and peas were really good too. Beef patty was okay! I'm a rabid fan of Jamaican cuisine. Was randomly driving by, spotted Dev's and had to give them a try. Got a small oxtail and small curry goat. The oxtail was tender, wonderfully seasoned and looked beautiful. I've been to Jamaica 15 times, and this was better than most of the oxtail I've had there. I was also impressed with the portion, four big pieces, not the little end parts that some places offer. The curry goat was also very tender. The rice and peas was delicious had a nice spice to it; I didn't even need to add any Grace's hot sauce. Cabbage was cooked perfectly, tender, but not limp. I go to Dev's often for takeout and I highly recommend their food. The vegetable plates, escovich red snapper and jerk chicken are always delicious with rice & peas, cabbage and plantains. The prices and size of plates are perfect. I always get an additional side order of cabbage because it's so good, but never enough. read more

I ordered the brown stew chicken , it was just okay, the chicken was somewhat dry, the sauce was okay the cabbage was my favorite & the peas & rice was again okay. I also got a side of Mac & cheese, it was something weird about it that I just couldn't put my finger on, but I've had better. I need food that is more than okay. I want food that will make me want to lick my finger or want for more. I didn't taste the love in the food, I'm gonna either have to give up this quest or take a trip to Jamaica or Trinidad for some authenticity & food cooked with passion & love or maybe it's just me, maybe my expectations are too high, but I don't think so, I'm a foodie and like a good man, "good food is hard to find!" read more

Came here craving a nice vegan Jamaican meal and this place did not disappoint. The gentleman at the register was very sweet and helpful. I ordered the callaloo which came with rice and peas, plantain, and steamed cabbage & carrots. Everything was prepared fresh and the portions were great and so filling. I came here with a friend who lives on the campus two blocks away and she loves the of tails. I came in and it looked like a mix of an eat-in restaurant but feels soo cheap. I decided to look past the everything and just order some food. *Bam!!* Roti was on the menu and I just had to have it. I haven't had some roti since last spring and I couldn't resist. I sat down, friend had her of tails and saw my chicken roti and started eating it and just kept digging. The disappointment started when I realized that there wasn't any potatoes in my roti and that killed me. I kept eating and my friend did enjoy her of tails but I just couldn't finish my roti and just felt utterly disappointed. I love me some Caribbean food and often times I don't feel like driving to NYC, so I come here from time to time. I love the Oxtails and beef patties here. A plate can set you back $10-$15 greenbacks. The other day we were running around and had a craving for some Oxtails, rice and plantain! She ordered the curry goat, rice and peas and cabbage. I ordered the Oxtails, rice and peas and plantains. For drinks we both got cream soda. All in all the food was good. The rice was too spicy and cabbage was ok. The curry goat was good and the Oxtails were spot on good!!! The meats were flavored well, but we found everything else to be ok. Returning is all about those Caribbean cravings. They have plenty of tables, but the food prep can be a wait so I would suggest calling ahead. Give them a try, my taste buds can be a lil biased sometimes. read more

We passed by this place and want to give it a try... it was little empty when we entered, one 1 couple were eating their meal, and another person ordering take out. So we walk over, and look for a menu, but didn't realize it's by the register. Knowing nothing about the restaurant, we asked the gentlemen in the front what he would recommend, and without much thinking he said OXTAIL!! so oxtail we go, and we order jerk chicken also. Then i asked for the beef pattie, he said sorry, they won't be ready for maybe another 10 min... but i guess since i didn't tell him that we will be dining in, that'w why he said what he said... anyway, people said they don't have good customer service, i think they did a pretty good job -- in a sense, the food came out pretty quick and the guy came by and check up on us and ask how are the food... even remember to brought out my beef pattie when it's ready... pretty good!! Price is right, taste is very very good, and portion is good also, will definitely go back for more... and yes... oxtail is awesome... next time i will try jerk pork and curry... just want to try everything... read more

I'm literally parked right in front of the door and I put in one quarter in the meter so I have 20 minutes. I say ok. I will NOT be going back here. Now before i start let me say that i've gone here more than a couple times; just to give the food a fair shot. I've had the oxtails which i enjoyed , but they were barely had meat on them. Everytime i've gotten a chicken or veggie patty they are ALWAYS barely heated through...no matter what time i've day i've gone...like why serve it if its not even done?? I've had the carrot cake which was stiff an pretty tasteless to me. The worse part above these things is that i've gone in there in the afternoon an literally waited 10 minutes b4 someone came to the front. Like i mean REALLY??? Me & another customer were just standing there saying hello an no 1 came until like 10 mins later NO exaggerations. Also they move SLOOOOOW..like why does it take you 5 MORE minutes to just grab a damn patty and put it in the bag...like smh ...really?? I'm done. Nope! I'm super picky about my Jamaican food. Mostly because I've been spoiled by the jerk pits around in my life. In Montreal, Toronto, Boston, Jacksonville Florida and Palm coast Florida had amazing spots. They did it up right. Just like back home. So much so, that someone on staff for sure knew someone from my extended family back in st. Ann. Anyway, so I've just to Montclair nj, and saw the reviews on yelp. So I get in the car and get an order of jerk pork, plantain and rice and peas. I didn't like anything about this. Not even the rice, sadly. Too much coconut and wayyyy too much jerk gravy. This makes me very sad because now I'll probably not go back there. I'll try a few more around the area and make a list. So far, I'm not happy and a bit nauseated. We have eaten take out from this restaurant before and the food is usually tasty and flavorful. Most times though its lukewarm. Today we ordered oxtails and for some unexplainable reason the Oxtail itself was bland and tasted watered down, while the rice, gravy, cabbage and plantain were on point. BUT, the idea that Jamaican restaurants are always out of food claims to be true during my experience ordering from this restaurant. Now, this could be a good thing! Maybe it just means the food is so delicious that people order so much of it and it's hard to keep stocked... Hm. Anyway, I wanted oxtail. There was none. Wanted the escovitch red snapper, out of that too. So, I settled for curry chicken. Curry sauce was a little pastey. I've had much better and wouldn't order it again, my friends mom makes it way better. If portion size is your main factor, they score and A for decently big portions. The food is so so, but the service is HORRIBLE. I called ahead to order our food on the phone. I was told it would be ready in twenty minutes. When I got there the food was not ready and I had to wait an additional 30 minutes. No apology, nothing! On top of the that the patties are frozen (then cooked) so I don't think they make them fresh and they surely didn't taste that great. The curry chicken was so so. The chicken roti was disgusting. This is the second time I've had to wait at least 20 minutes for food while in the restaurant. I've heard others complain about this as well while waiting for their food. I have had my share of Jamaican food but DEV's beats them all!!! Their Jerk chicken rice and beans w Cabbage is AMAZING!!!! They do take their time in making the food but it's worth the wait. I usually call before I go in and pick up so I can get my fix quicker :) The carrot cake is also amazing. I have also had the OX tail with rice and beans and that was unbelievable!!
