Went to Libélula for the first time today, as I'm very picky with the Peruvian places I try (I was born and raised in Perú, so I just have a very set palate for Peruvian food). My friend and I asked if they sell pan con chicharrón, and though they don't have it on the menu, the chef (Brian) said he'd make it for us! First impression of the service ... amazing. We got the pan con chicharrón and I truly almost cried! I have not had one as delicious as this one in Jersey! The pork was tender, yet nicely fried, and there was not as much fat on it which is always hard as the fat gives it the flavor but too much can be overpowering. After talking to the chef, he mentioned that it is no longer on the menu because people didn't really order it ... so here I am, asking you all to go in and order it, so it can hopefully go back on the menu and everyone can try authentic and delicious Peruvian breakfast!! After eating at Ani Ramen we wanted a coffee a couple of blocks away and I've been trying to stop at this location for a while so it's been long overdue! They have the cutest entrance and it's really welcoming inside. It pulls you in from the business of Bloomfield Ave on this quiet side street. Was happy to see the owner of this establishment up front and she welcomed us her spot and recommend some options for us. I'll have to come back for their guava and cheese pastelito since they were fresh out. I went for a regular latte and a tres leches iced latte for my friend. Perfect amount of sweetness in the drink, you'd figured it would be overly sweet but not the case. We also split a concha (pan dulce) which was perfect with the coffee, a real treat. My best Gardening associate treated me to breakfast a while ago when I paid him a visit to repair his barrel composter I made him a few years ago. we got a couple empanadas and he made me get the al fajor because he knew I was Peruvian and needed me to judge it. While we were waiting he said one of the owner is also Dominican. immediately I saw the picture/painting of Morir soñando. I asked if they served that and the lady was yes. within a nano second I said yes please. As we were waiting I explained to my friend that morir S is made with OJ and milk and he threw up in his mouth. Libelula is a lovely modern space. We were given a friendly greeting as soon as we arrived. We were here for dinner, which isn't as popular as the breakfast and lunch, but it should be. This meal was a stunner. I had high expectations from hearing great reviews, but I really wasn't expecting how well executed this food was. We ordered Ceviche, Tuna Tartar, La Bandera, Grilled Pork Chop, Papa a la Huancaina, Tres Leche Cake, and Alfajor. The Ceviche was an absolute star! Visually stunning, the combination of flavors and textures were outstanding. I would come back for this dish alone. The Tuna Tartar was a heaping mound of beautiful red fish, sitting atop a vibrant green sauce, with perfectly crispy yellow tostones bordering the dish. Delicious. The La Bandera is a big ol'bowl of goodness. Tender shredded pork, crispy pork belly, sweet maduros, and a perfectly cooked soy egg sit on a bed of red beans and sauce, and a side of white rice. This dish is heavenly. It is also hearty. I brought home plenty of leftovers. The Pork Chop was juicy and flavorful with some really tasty sweet potatoes and Brussels sprouts. My husband's only complaint was that there weren't two chop. Try and save some room for dessert, because the Tres Leche is excellent. The Alfajor cookie was even better. Libelula is taking some humble dishes and elevating them to the top level. I cannot wait to go back and try more of the menu. read more

With the temperatures dipping into the low 40s and sustenance needed ahead of an Oscar movie (tis the season), my top-tier chum and I stopped by for lunch this past Friday. I was a little apprehensive since we couldn't secure an online reservation ahead of time, but thankfully we were able to secure a table after a minimal wait. The place was definitely bustling throughout our visit and we saw a few larger parties by the entrance that had to wait a bit longer than we did. The interior has a rustic vibe with an emphasis on whites and other light colors. I'm not an expert on Peru, but I'm assuming the framed llama picture nearby depicts a fairly mainstream animal from the country. It's pleasant in there; to the immediate right of the entrance is a bakery section where you can presumably grab a pastry or coffee to go, with the rest of the establishment dedicated to a sit-down restaurant. The need for comfort food was clear, so I went with the La Bandera, featuring slow roasted pork, red beans, sweet plantains and a side of white rice. For sure hit the spot. My experience with this type of cuisine is typically centered on food trucks and more casual settings, so I'm used to this being greasy and heavy - this really wasn't; no inadvertent hunks of gristle or super fatty cuts. There's probably a sophisticated culinary term for when the rice is a little overcooked and softer like this (I guess sort of the opposite of al dente?), and I personally prefer it this way. Texture-wise, it pairs well with the red beans. Literally every aspect of this item is above average. The tradeoff is you're not getting a lot of pork with this dish, which is a disappointment given the price point. As you can see from the attached photo, the red beans really dominate the dish and although the majority of pork is obscured because of the onion garnish, it was easy to obscure, believe me. The plantains are sparse as well, so roughly 70% of this entree is rice and beans, which are tasty but the best parts end up being supporting cast members. I didn't toddle out of the restaurant feeling disgusting, so that's a plus to be fair. The service was okay. It probably felt a little slower than it actually was because we were going to the Clairidge right after this so there was a little nervous side-eyeing of the watches here, but it wasn't egregious. It probably took 25 to 30 minutes, and I think that's largely to be expected given that these dishes are clearly made to order. I would have liked it if the waitress stopped by a little more regularly especially given the slightly longer wait time, but that's for sure a nitpick. As mentioned, it was pretty busy and everyone was understandably occupied with customers. I've been on the record numerous times over the years that Montclair is a super overrated food town, but places like Libelula are tilting the scales in its favor. Really good, and I love that it's conveniently located so I can pre-game before the movies. read more

Stopped by here months ago, and lots of good things to say. Libelula has good seating for single, couples or even group gatherings. There is a bakery to the right of the entrance when you walked in. Greqt for sweet tooths or those who want to take home some items after a meal. Service was great but I went while it was quiet. What I cared about was the food and it did not disappoint. The prices were reasonable and I tried many options to see how much range this French/dominance fusion inspired restaurant had. A stand out was the lomo Saltado. The tender beef fell apart with ease ans the basil noodles complimented the dish. I enjoyed the short rib dish but I also know there are other options which may steal the spotlight. Was very excited to try this place and sadly it didn't live up to the hype :( The vibes inside were lovely. Very calm and lowkey. Our server was very attentive. Food is where things went downhill. We got the shrimp and ceviche. You can tell the ceviche was not marinated for long and didn't pick up the flavor well. The fish was a little tough to chew and the purée was a little reminiscent of baby food. The shrimp had good flavor and was the better of the 2 apps we got. For entrees we got the lomo saltado and the roasted chicken. The lomo saltado was extremely salty and the meat was a little chewy. We couldn't eat much of it because of the salt. It came with pesto noodles which felt like a weird combo. The chicken was much much better and this I may come back for. It was very crispy and the sauce on top was delicious. Some pieces were just drier than others. We got the tres leches at the end. So I'm making shorter reviews since it's probably too long. I went for brunch! The place is a Peruvian Dominican fusion and I can say TLDR(5/5!!) Now onto the Food, that is GAS (10/5) I had low expectations because it was a bakery but it's restaurant quality and it comes out fast. We had the Lomo Saltado which was extremely tasty. Top 3 I've ever had. The Tres leches was really good, it had a good balance between the condensed milk and the sponginess of the cake. We had two drinks the white one tasted like a creamsicle to me (mad good if you like them). The red drink was decent but the creamsicle one is top notch. I also brought the Guava and Cheese Paselitos (Their version of a Danish) and GODDAMN. Put those in the oven to heat up and you got a delicious treat right there. Price for flavor and quantity is 5/5 as well. The Service was pretty good, and very friendly. It does function as a bakery first and then a kitchen but I heard they added a dinner! Overall, no complaints there and the one I had was very lovely and provided the best recommendations. Decor and environment are quaint and cute! It's a great homey feel as opposed to modern and high class. With the food I much prefer the vibes it has now.
