Guns ocean and…read morethorns The Sagamore Hill Historic Site is the remains of an old battery of two 155 mm artillery pieces that were placed here in WW 2 to protect the Cape Cod Canal and surrounding area against German subs. Like most coastal defense forts, the guns were never fired in anger and were removed after the war. The fort was decommissioned and turned into a park. The site has wide and open trails in the beginning and getting to the site where the old guns were is pretty easy. You can see a few remains of the artillery battery but the main attraction is the great views of the ocean and hills around Sagamore. The site is a nice place for some hiking, easy off road bike riding or snow shoeing and cross country skiing in the winter. However if you try and complete the whole loop be advised that the trail narrows considerably after you reach the artillery site and in the summer gets over grown with impressive thorns, very healthy poison ivy and hordes of ticks. A pleasant and seldom used place that offers a bit of history, great views of the ocean or some exercise. But like many trails in this area it's probably best left till the cold weather.

Two roadway bridges and one railroad bridge cross the canal, ensuring that people headed out to Falmouth and Provincetown can get there easily (or you can take a ferry/MBTA boat from Boston). The first attempts to build the canal did not take place until the late 19th century but they did not begin excavation until 1880 but that effort failed. The final start was underway in 1909 and completed in 1916, with a final push by the US Army Corps of Engineers widening it to 480 feet in 1940. The canal has service roads on both sides with access for fishing. It's completely level and ideal for skating, biking or just having a really nice walk along the canal. There's a lot of interesting and good information, and I liked the people. But.... The first half of the tour is in an old mini bus. The bus has tiny windows, like 4" square, and no air circulation. No fans. No air conditioning. Today was nearly 90 out by 10 am, when our tour started, and temperatures inside the bus got so hot that stepping out felt cool! You don't travel far, and then they stop for 10 minutes to talk about what's out the window. It's brutal. Ironically, the travel distances are so slim most people could walk it. But, just sitting on the bus in the heat? Yuck. The second half is in an old shed where you learn about harvesting. Again, it could be interesting, but it's a good 10° hotter, even with the fans going, and it makes it hard to focus. Or even listen. Better weather would have helped. But, we had an old lady in our tour group nearly pass out, and the guide indicated that that was not uncommon. Heck, complimentary water would be nice. Waters are a dollar. The tour is fifteen. It's all cash only.

The bridge was built in the 1930s just like the Bourne bridge and always looks well kept. The state finally smartened up in the past 10 years and got rid of the rotary in front of it so Rte 3 goes straight over it. I'm surprised it took over 75 years to figure out that one!

The bridge was built in the 1930s so it is showing its age and its need for maintenance. Still, it provides beautiful views of the channel as you cross it.

Cape Cod's route 6A is the Old King's Highway that runs from Sandwich,MA to Orleans, MA. It is much…read moremore scenic than driving on Highway 6. There are pretty houses with the picket-fences. Just like I imagined what Cape Cod should look like. There are diners, antique shops, donut shops and farm houses along the route. We also stopped off a the Roland C. Nickerson State Park. There are easy hiking trails to Flax Pond and Cliff Pond. The Rail-to-trail bike trail runs right through here. So you can park at the state park and bike north or south. Route 6A end at Orleans and merges with Route 6 but splits off at North Truro and head North to Provincetown to become Bradford St.

Old King's Highway. 6A travels along the Cape Cod Bay side of Cape Cod. It doesn't really look like a highway it more of a road. And on the side of the roads you'll see cute NE houses looking just like it did back in the days. There are also all kinds of antique shops, a few general stores, donut huts, etc. We stopped by Taylor-Bray Farm in Yarmouth to say hi to the farm animals. It's so cool to look everything that I would probably drive mad slow just to see some stuff. It makes for a more interesting drive than going on Highway 6 where you see nothing. Highway 6 travels along the center of Cape Cod and all you see is trees on either side. Kinda boring so if you want a more interesting road, Route 6A is the road to take. Route 6A merges with Highway 6 eventually at about Orleans. You can't get lost. Eventually the road splits again at about North Truro and it goes all the way to Provincetown.

HMG has quite an amazing and rather extensive collection of automobiles from the early days 1905, 1920s, 1930s, to 1940s. Great to see the various transitions the production and inventions the auto industry went through - various engines of electric, steam, or gasoline as fuel. All autos are perfectly restored and in working condition! Then meander through the magnifique Hydrangea gardens - eight varieties and 160 species...the full varied gardens cover 100 acres. (Lookout NYBG). You're welcome! Finish at the exquisitely restored carousel for a lovely ride! The carousel is beautifully restored. Built in 1908 in Providence, Rhode Island. The bathroom/wash sink were mostly clean but could have used more cleaning in a day. A beautiful playground further down the street for kids to have fun too. We had a family of turkey visit us in the morning and a skunk searching for any leftover food at night. Had no - very minimal seeing others which was a major plus during these COVID Times.
