This is such a lovely park. Well maintained, great spots with enough privacy, clean showes and toilets and dogs are allowed. The rangers are extremely helpful and very friendly. The sites itself are big enough for a big tent, small tent + trailer. Places got a bbq or a pit for a fire. The only thing is that you can hear the highway very good. But if you imagine this is the there is nothing wrong. Perfect basecamp for discovering Cape Cod but also Rhode Island. Would go again, absolutely. read more

Great State Park, we love staying here. Can't say enough good things! Well, actually one negative thing. Bought firewood from the store here, after it rained last night. I don't know if they didn't cover the wood or what happened, but the wood was still very wet when I went to get a fire going. Obviously not the greatest situation! Too bad that our last night was spent struggling with the fire. Outside of that, great place to camp out on the Cape! read more

A great campsite with good amount of privacy. Each campsite has its own table and fire pit. We enjoyed our stay camping. The staffs are friendly. The bathroom/wash sink were mostly clean but could have used more cleaning in a day. A beautiful playground further down the street for kids to have fun too. We had a family of turkey visit us in the morning and a skunk searching for any leftover food at night. Had no - very minimal seeing others which was a major plus during these COVID Times. read more

We've camped here before as tenters but came back this year with an RV. There's no electricity or sewer on the sites themselves but there's an easily accessible dump station. Plenty of trash receptacles and lots of space between sites to offer a lot of privacy. Dogs are welcome here and we had a very nice, quiet, private time without any interruptions. read more

I am a shocked this place only has 3.5 star review. We normally camp at Nickerson State Park in Brewster, but since the entire 400+ sites were booked up for the entire summer (we looked in June) we decided to try out Shawme-Crowell. Our site - we settled on B86 without knowing how it would be until we saw it in person. SO much privacy, something very hard to get at Nickerson !! I would highly recommend this site. Only downside is not a lot of trees to tie a clothesline or a tarp, and like other reviewers said literally a forest of poison ivy was around us but we got use to it. Some sites seemed to have less privacy and no poison ivy, but we were happy with privacy as a priority. There was a massive rain storm and our site had great drainage. I would 100% book this site again and would recommend it. Camp store - leaves a lot to be desired and didn't have kindling (it had rained and we couldn't use sticks from the forest) but the very nearby stop n shop did. The camp store did have ice, firewood, and fire starters. Camp Ground - bathrooms were as clean as you would expect for a state forest/park. This camp ground was much more quiet than other experiences I've had considering we camped during a prime weekend in August. Nearby: we visited Old Silver Beach - wow what an amazing spot !! We also checked out Fisherman's view seafood, really good drinks and fantastic ambiance. Grocery store & hardware store nearby which came in handy. read more

We had three campsites which were vastly different in size (one hardly held 2 cars and 2 tents), so check the pictures if you can to see what yours looks like. Our campsite was also right behind another where we drove on a dirt road covered in roots to get to it, so make sure your car isn't too low to the ground / don't think you're invading some else's campsite. The hiking/walking trails are at the end of road A, and you might be able to park there (we did), but it's also the RV dumping station. read more

The staff was so friendly and helpful. The park was CLEAN not a piece of trash anywhere. They were very accommodating when I had a couple requests. We stayed in two different yurts a small yurt for 1 night then a large yurt for two nights. One of the bunk bed rails was warped and fell off coincidentally my son fell off the bed while in his sleeping bag. He was not injured but they promptly fixed the problem. I would definitely stay here again my kids loved YURT CAMPING the price was amazing. Honestly I have paid more per night at private camp grounds and dealt with rude staff. Officially my new favorite last-minute weekend plans. Shawme-Crowell State Forest is a 1 hour drive from Boston, just over the bridge onto the Cape, and about 10 kinds of awesome. For MA residents, $12 a night you get a campsite, up to 2 cars, up to 4 peeps and pets are allowed. They have nearly 270 sites, mostly tent but some RV, hiking trails, free showers, potable water AND your pass gets you into Scusset beach which is typically $7 to park for the day. There's a camp store on site for all your marshmallow and firewood desires, the rangers and staff are friendly and accommodating (we forgot the poochie's rabies records...oops) and the bathrooms are incredibly clean. read more

Tried to get in to old favorite Nickerson State Park to camp for memorial day weekend and it was all sold out. I found Shawme-Crowell through the web, booked online, and it totally met my camping needs when we arrived. Staff was very friendly and nice, the campsite we were given was delightfully private feeling, and the whole park was very quiet and relaxing. There is a super Stop'n'Shop about 5 minutes away, as well as a camp store if you don't want to drive for all your food and firewood needs. There are no amenities like an on-site lake or beach, but if you just want straight camping and value not having to drive too far to get the experience Shawme-Crowell should be perfect for you. There are many beaches and attractions a short drive away also if you care to branch out. read more

Definitely will return to Shawme-Crowell. I've camped at Nickerson before and found it too loud, although I know noise level is totally a crapshoot. I went just this weekend (May 31-June 2) and since school's not over yet, think that might have played a role in the peacefulness. I lucked into scoring a yurt, and was surprised that two yurts on our loop remained unoccupied over the weekend; I'm guessing that these were walk-up reservations only. Shawme-Crowell's the sort of place I'd return to for tent camping, though - the sites were spacious and pretty private. The yurts are great, although keep in mind that it's not like being in a hotel. Depending on your level of comfort, you may want to bring a mattress pad, as the mattresses aren't exactly Posturepedics. There's electricity, but no heating, and it can get pretty cool at night. While there's no running water inside the yurt, there's a water pump at the site, and the water is potable (and tastes pretty good, too!). What was awesome was the kitchen sink - with hot water - outside the bathrooms. No need to heat up water and wash dishes at the camp site! There was a fire pit and picnic table behind the yurt, and we looked out onto woods. It was relaxing to just sit out there, read and drink coffee. We left some things outside while we were off the grounds sightseeing, but (to a point a previous reviewer made), didn't have any problems with theft. Park staff regularly patrol the grounds and aside from some initial Blair Witch Project-angst the first night (if you live in greater Boston, like me, you're not used to total darkness and quiet!), I felt safe. As for cleanliness, well, it's up to yurt guests to sweep the floor out and clean up the site before leaving. I'd say that things were "clean enough." Some aspects of the bathroom were a little mildewy, but I was just happy to have hot water for the shower (and free, too: no coin-operated showers here!). The camp store is small but keeps pretty much anything you'd need on hand: sunscreen, bug spray, firewood & firestarter, cold drinks, etc. We didn't spend a lot of time in the park itself during the day, but I will if we go back. It's a very pretty spot in a great part of the Cape. I think the areas near the bridges sometimes get ignored as people speed on through to get to other parts of the Cape, but there are some cool things to see and do in and around Sandwich. My wife and I tent camped in site B45. Privacy is important to us when camping and this site did the trick. It was large and at the top of a hill. We would definitely camp here again. The location was perfect for day trips (Boston, up the Cape, to the beach). The only drawback was the showers were not very clean. We were here over 4th of July and the campground was busy and the showers were only cleaned once a day. This was not enough. Overall great place to stay and close to town. read more

This campsite is great, the campsites are very spacious and somewhat private. Not like a lot of other campsites where they just cram you all in together and you are right on top of your neighbor. The staff are really friendly, it's easy to book online through reserveamerica. There is a small store in the campground where you can buy firewood and ice at a reasonable price, but I would reccomend buying larger bags of ice is more cost effective in town at the grocery store. As with all Massachusetts state parks you can't bring in firewood and there is no alcohol allowed. There isn't actually much to do at this campsite, but you are right at the Cape! You can go to Scusset Beach for free, the hang tag they give you grants you access to the beach there. It is only a bay beach though. We made a day trip to Nauset Beach which was awesome, but for kids and just a day at the beach - Scusset is perfect. Water is pretty cold though, but that is to be expected at most Cape beaches. For the price and the location - you can't really go wrong for a camping trip. But if you are looking for everything to be right at your campsite, you will want to go to another campsite. Everything is easily within a short driving distance though. read more

Bathrooms were clean for a campground and kept stocked. I liked that bathrooms were conveniently located and in walking distance of all sites. The park requests that you don't bring your own wood; along with other items, you can purchase wood at the park store, which is conveniently open until 10pm (at least on weekends). My campsite was B64, on top of a hill, which flattened out at the top, obviously. I liked it because we were higher up, away from the park road. The map online looked like we would be quite a distance away from others, but we were not; the 4-5 sites there were in a circle. It would be difficult to park with a large truck. But I was happy with it because we were not along the park road. I wish the campsites were spread further apart/more into the woods (as we could see and easily walk into our neighbors yard, which was about 25-30 ft away); however, this was my first time here, maybe there are more campsites that are more into the woods and more spaced apart. Although, I could see how staying in a different area would be less pleasurable as park traffic and main road noise could be more easily heard. The group sites looked awesome if you wanted to camp with a bunch of people. read more

This summer I decided to go solo camping with my dog in a roof top tent. I was nervous trying to find the right location where I felt safe, had flat campsites, with tree cover and didn't have one camp site on top of another. Shawne-Crowell was great! Very simple to navigate around and the trails are worth checking out for a morning walk. The staff was very helpful as well! I last camped here about 40 years ago with wife and two young children in a tent. This time, my dog and I were trying out our new-to-us 22' RV. Nice wooded sites with picnic tables and fire pits. Very quiet in the middle of the week during midsummer -- at least while we were there. We had a nice view out over the forest from our hillside site. A lot of the pretty green undergrowth is poison ivy, but not a problem if you stay on the cleared land and paths. Like most state parks, there are no hookups, but they have handy spots to get water and a good dump station. Very handy to the Canal and a free (with park hangtag) public bayside beach (other beaches have $20/day parking fees). Major civilization of all sorts is very close by and the entire cape is stretched out in front of you. read more

Stayed with a group of friends @ a group site. Had a great time. Bathrooms and showers were kept as clean as possible. (It is a camp site!). However, I think this must be the year of the daddy long leg spider. Some kind of jubilee year or something. Way too many! Stand still for 30 seconds you WILL have a few crawling on you! We stayed at this campground in July '09 at site C22. We had the unfortunate experience of having our campsite robbed while staying here. It was extremely unnerving to return to our site to find our sleeping mats, pillows, towels, sleeping bags, flashlights, and even propane tanks stolen! After talking with some campers that had stayed at this campground longer, we found that a previous camper had been robbed at the same site the year before. Apparently, homeless people sometimes walk through the campground during the day stealing things, though we suspect we were robbed by the campers at the next site over. We do not recommend this campground on account of these safety issues. I have been camping my entire life and never had even one item stolen. This campground apparently needs to work on security. read more

The one thing you should know about this place above all else is that it doesn't have water of any sort IN the park. There are beaches in the area, and I understand if you have a parking pass for the campground, you have a parking pass for the beach. Not being my thing, that doesn't bother me at all. The "B" road seems to me (after driving around before I stayed here) to be the place to stay, as all of the campsites are off the road for the most part. There are rays of dirt roads off the main path that contain campsites, so you feel as if you have some seclusion from the real world. The rangers never bother you unless you are being an idiot, so note to self: don't be an idiot. The camprground itself has all the usual amenities, showers, toilets, and is also very clean. The sites themselves have the usual picnic table and stone circled campfire with a small grill over it. All in all, a nice place to stay for adults. but the children might get a little bored from the lack of a pond or a beach. read more

I love this campground!! We have been going there for the past 4-years. The camp staff is very nice and welcoming. At night, it quiet and peacfully. I have never had a bad experience!! I was very pleased when I found out that they excepted pets. I have two wonderfull pitbulls and they were able to camp with us. Just show proof of rabies etc. I would recommend this campground to anyone. It cost $14.00 per night for out of state resident which is a steal. I can't wait to go back! I get the same site everytime!! LOVE IT!!! read more

The forest was very beautiful and the employees were friendly and professional. However the driveways off of the main road to reach the campsites were HORRIBLE. You basically need a truck/suv to reach the campsites, my car barley made it down the road and it sounded horrible with all the scraping. Many of the campsites also had no privacy whatsoever (ours included), and the bathrooms also had a lot of bugs. Would definitely return, just with a larger vehicle and a better selected campsite. read more

My family spent a week here. My parents had a yurt, which was really nice - had its own deck, water spigot, picnic table, fire pit. We had a tent site, which was spacious. The campground is pretty wooded. We stayed in area 2. Unfortunately, we didn't realize our site was in a sort of valley until we got there, and it rained, which turned into a river through our site - we ended up having to move our tent. We had to walk up hill to the bathrooms/showers. We'd pick another site next time (we had B19). The prices are very reasonable. I wish they'd charge a bit more and do a better job with maintenance. There was some litter on our site when we arrived, and a pile of ashes I guess from prior fires. Not sure why that was there? Saw the host sweeping/mopping the baths and emptying trash, but there was black mildew all over the seat in the shower - looked like some additional cleaning was needed. There isn't a lot to do at the campground, but we did other things on the Cape each day. Can't beat the price. read more
