Guns ocean and…read morethorns The Sagamore Hill Historic Site is the remains of an old battery of two 155 mm artillery pieces that were placed here in WW 2 to protect the Cape Cod Canal and surrounding area against German subs. Like most coastal defense forts, the guns were never fired in anger and were removed after the war. The fort was decommissioned and turned into a park. The site has wide and open trails in the beginning and getting to the site where the old guns were is pretty easy. You can see a few remains of the artillery battery but the main attraction is the great views of the ocean and hills around Sagamore. The site is a nice place for some hiking, easy off road bike riding or snow shoeing and cross country skiing in the winter. However if you try and complete the whole loop be advised that the trail narrows considerably after you reach the artillery site and in the summer gets over grown with impressive thorns, very healthy poison ivy and hordes of ticks. A pleasant and seldom used place that offers a bit of history, great views of the ocean or some exercise. But like many trails in this area it's probably best left till the cold weather.

Dexter Grist Mill is one of the oldest operating mills in the United States, and evidently one of…read morethe most photographed spots in Sandwich. It's a small local attraction, so if you happen to be in the area, I'd stop by. Admission to the mill, which still works, is around $3. They'll tell you all about how the mill works, which is cool from a historical standpoint - it is from the mid-1600s and was restored to operating conditions in the 1960s. Also pick up some of the locally stone-ground corn for $5/bag. It makes excellent polenta and grits!

Two roadway bridges and one railroad bridge cross the canal, ensuring that people headed out to Falmouth and Provincetown can get there easily (or you can take a ferry/MBTA boat from Boston). The first attempts to build the canal did not take place until the late 19th century but they did not begin excavation until 1880 but that effort failed. The final start was underway in 1909 and completed in 1916, with a final push by the US Army Corps of Engineers widening it to 480 feet in 1940. The canal has service roads on both sides with access for fishing. It's completely level and ideal for skating, biking or just having a really nice walk along the canal. It's really hard to get a schedule of when the bridge goes up and down. Apparently a trash truck…read morecrosses twice daily. But not at set times. I finally checked the schedule for the Cape Flyer. And planted myself in the area. Lo and behold, a bell sounded and the bridge began lowering. The train crossed and 25 minutes later, the bridge rose. I am such a geek. This was so cool.

HMG has quite an amazing and rather extensive collection of automobiles from the early days 1905, 1920s, 1930s, to 1940s. Great to see the various transitions the production and inventions the auto industry went through - various engines of electric, steam, or gasoline as fuel. All autos are perfectly restored and in working condition! Then meander through the magnifique Hydrangea gardens - eight varieties and 160 species...the full varied gardens cover 100 acres. (Lookout NYBG). You're welcome! Finish at the exquisitely restored carousel for a lovely ride! The carousel is beautifully restored. Built in 1908 in Providence, Rhode Island. Thank you for a wonderful time!

Ok so why am I rating a bridge again? It's because Yelp wanted mt to rate the Sagamore bridge first…read morewhich I thought weird but ok I did. As far as the Bourne bridge is concerned it's the bridge you want to go over if your going to the Falmouth area rather than taking the Sagamore bridge to head to Hyannis and Yarmouth and even down to Provincetown. Now in my opinion it looks identical to the Sagamore bridge and was built in the 1930s like the Sagamore which might be the reason. Either way people enjoy your bridges!!

Bourne Bridge is another bridge connecting to/from Cape Cod and is popular for incoming to the…read moreCape, on Route 28. Do expect traffic in either direction, because it will get congested, especially at the roundabout at the south end, during the summer peak. There is also a path located on the southbound side, with no barrier or fence, viewing the scenery of the Cape Cod Canal and even the railroad bridge, if it's a clear day. We never had any issues crossing the bridge, despite some traffic we experienced, but nothing too major. I personally enjoy crossing the Bourne, simply because it's the convenient and direct way of entering Cape Cod.

We all know that dumps and recycling centers are the place to be, and the Bourne Transfer Station…read moreis a decent dump. In all seriousness, this particular center is great because they allow people to use the facility from the surrounding towns. You roll in, weigh in, dump your junk and go. The prices are reasonable and the staff has always been pleasant. Recently they changed their set up to make recycling a priority. Before you would dump all of you materials in one space, but now you are expected to sort your items and drop them in the designated areas. The other nice thing about this location is the fact that they have a swap shop. Even though that sounds stupid, you can actually find some unique and well taken care of items.
