I found Rose of old film that had to be around at least 35 years. I was so excited because my husband died recently and I thought how did we ever let these go without printing them?. I called Dexter and the first time I talked to Bruce and he explained that yes go ahead and mail them in and we'll figure out from there. Which ones will be good for you.. I'm currently not feeling well so I just thought it'd be easier to send them downtown then drive. I apologize. I called back a second time to make sure they got there safely from UPS, but I don't remember the young man. I talk to, but he was so helpful. Turns out that the roles I sent in had never been developed in there was one old camera that you might have a few left he was just or should I say they were so helpful so kind if I ever have any business to do with any kind of film developing or cameras? I have been going to the place for three years now and another reviewer had it correct, the quality has declined rapidly over the years. They guarantee that your scans will come back from seven to ten days, but on many occasions it has taken more then ten days for me to receive my photos. Not to mention, and this is really why I can't continue coming, all of my scans will come back with over 10+ specs of dust. Most times they are just small pieces of dust, but a lot of times hairs that are noticeable long and in the middle of negative space. I really want to like this place and continue to come but I can't risk wasting my time and having bad scans. See attached photo, scribbled out for privacy. Other than that, they have a good selection of film at a fair price and many cameras to choose from. But if you're coming to get your film scanned, I would choose another store. read more

I will most definitely return. The staff is friendly & helpful. They have a good selection of film on hand, provides developing services, has a great location. Tons of vintage cameras. Walking in you get an overwhelming sense of beautiful nostalgia. I accidentally rolled up a couple rolls of film I wasn't able to get the lead out of. I took both rolls in and they helped me out. Free of charge. While I didn't have cash on me at the time to leave a tip, I felt terrible for not doing so for such help and impeccable service. Another visit, I had purchased an old 35mm off EBay and took it in to troubleshoot the problem. Given my issue was more user error and not the camera itself, I found their service to be positive and helpful... despite it being my error, they helped in a way that didn't make me feel like the 35mm novice I was at the time. Having previously been to a different family owned camera shop in Ventura County (which was significantly closer to home), I found Dexters to be more trustworthy. I've found Dexters services a lot more helpful than my experience at the location I had been to. I'd gladly drive out of my way for the trustworthy, dependable and friendly service Dexters provides. read more

After using Dexters for years to dev + scan my film, the last couple of years have really really declined in quality. From neglecting to even look at the film and clean off pretty big pieces of dust + debris before scanning to the quality of the scans being delivered incredibly pixelated to the edits that dexters has given. Just overall not satisfied. It just seems like lack of care over the craft of it all. I don't have time to come back to ask for a rescan over unusable frames. I've been starting to send my film to Richards Photo Lab and the quality is a stark difference. They give you feedback on your images in regards to exposure, you can choose your personal color preferences, the scans come out beautifully, and the customer service is far beyond. Which makes me sad because I'd really like to trust a shop near me but dexters is the only option. read more

Have been using Dexter's for a little over a year now and would not recommend any other lab. I am just an amateur film photographer shooting film for fun but I have used and tried over 10 different labs in the last two years just to get a feel for who was doing what right and at what cost, before ultimately deciding Dexter's was the place to stay with. Dexter's offers a level of customer service that the high volume lab in San Clemente can't match, and a value (without compromising quality) so good that it makes using the expensive lab in Valencia seem like you're just wasting money, and a lot of it. Greg and his team always provide consistent work and are receptive to minor issues you might have along the way. They are honest with turnaround times and never make you feel like you're just a number. In fact, I am always pleasantly surprised when I stop in the shop once a year and Greg recognizes me by name. Dexter's is also one of the few labs that I have found that processes such a wide variety of film and has no problem developing by hand when needed. There are very few labs, if any, that do not upcharge for E-6 and black and white developing and I feel that Dexter's is true to their motto of making film services affordable for the general consumer. Wanting to stop by the shop is one of the main reasons I took my first trip up to Ventura last time I was in LA. Ventura is a nice little town with some great coffee shops and a vibrant main street that is definitely worth a shot. Dexter's shop sits at the top of the hill and is filled with a lot of unique finds ranging from cameras to equipment and even an old Kodak disposable dispenser. It's an inviting space and definitely something worth making a trip to see. read more

My first time submitting film to this lab but despite some initial confusion, the photos received were great! I think I will continue to use this lab :) They also process ECN-2 Films. Its a bit more expensive but def worth it! They don't charge extra for pushing/pulling film and its super cheap $5 scan $5 develop so its nice! Some photos for reference. read more

I understand the love in other reviews. We took a 50 year-old 5x7 photo and asked what we could do with it for my parents' 50th wedding anniversary. Remarkably, Dexter's printed a 16 x 24, that was art on its own. They recommended we go see Bill at Ventura Picture Framing and the end result exceeded anything I could have imagined. Beautiful and memorable, and something I imagine will be part of family legend. I had 20 MiniDV tapes - baby videos of my three kids going back to 2001 - that desperately needed digital transcription before their shelf life expired (nobody knows how long, but 10-20 years old is pushing the issue), and my MiniDV camera was dead. Repairing the camera was a $300+ job, and when it was all fixed up I'd have an antique camera that I didn't want and STILL have had to do all the video work myself. Being essentially a lazy Pooh Bear, well, NO WAY! Then there's the matter of mailing my tapes away?!? Not a freakin' chance that I'd be doing THAT. Lost tapes in the mail was an unacceptable possibility, no matter how remote. So, I needed somebody local. ENTER DEXTER'S!!! I wasn't in a hurry, so I told them to take all the time they needed; it's the holiday season, so everybody SHOULD be chill and not in a hurry, just like me. This is the Way. Another potential problem with sending the tapes away would be dealing with transcription errors - hey, things happen. And sure enough there was one issue that came up, and Dexter's handled it right away, with me sitting there, behaving like a Mother Hen, entirely too proud of myself for having even shot the videos that I had, because PRECIOUS BABIES. Anyway, Dexter's handled my parental psychosis like professionals and got me a bomb-@ss digital archive (hundreds of gigabytes worth) for less than fixing my old camera (the inherent breakpoint on this particular task). I couldn't be more pleased. Now, I get to assemble (after backing up the files into every Cloud account that I own) my baby videos into a Feature Length Film that only my sweetie and I will ever want to watch (Cecil B. deMille wouldn't even sit through it... I've gotten my disposable cameras developed here about 3 times and they never let me down, I've compared the quality of mine to my friends film that got developed in a CVS and the quality here is a million times better, really fair price and you can get both prints and digitals! They always give you an estimate on how long pictures will take and the longest for me has been about 8 days so pretty good. Everyone is very nice and helpful here as well. This place is fantastic and truly a gem. I had a series of rolls of film that were shot in multiple formats: medium format, 110 and even disc (I realize that I am REALLY showing my age here). How many of us have had that experience of finding rolls of film at the bottom of in.a drawer at our parents house but have no idea what to do with it? Dexter's to the rescue! I contacted them via email and to confirm that they could process my film. They assure me that they could process it but could not guarantee that they could recover anything. However, they would not charge me unless there were images present, otherwise it would be $5 a roll and they would upload them to Google drive for easy downloading. Sold! Many of the images were from at least 20 years ago. Dexter's was able to recover many of the images, for which I am grateful. Once they received my package and payment information, the film was promptly processed. The images were uploaded and the negative were returned. Communication was great. I wish I had used them for my 35mm as well. read more

There ONLY camera store in Ventura that deals with film. I try and go here every week to buy lenses as the stock is always updating. Best store decor I have ever seen!!! I can't express enough how much this is just the place to get your film processed, $5 to process $5 to scan, all the same price doesn't matter if it's .Tif or Jpeg, E6, B&W, Push, Pull, upside down, made of peanut butter, it doesn't matter it's all the same price, the quality is unbelievable and beyond a deal, they also offer a rush and high quality, but what's best is they're humans and they care. In helping an elder friend downsize, I took his vintage film camera to Dexter's to establish what condition it was in. I first called and they were very friendly, informative and honest as to what they could offer and couldn't; they could determine if the camera worked but were not equipped to clean it. I greatly appreciated their authenticity. When I took the camera in to be assessed they were just as warm and welcoming as they had been on the phone. They were able to quickly determine if the camera worked and did not charge a fee. I could tell they are a popular company in town with a community feel. When they tell you over the phone twice that your film will be ready for pick up on Monday, 10-31-2022, they really should have told you not to bother coming in because they take Halloween off as an official holiday. So, when you drive in several hours and try to get your film that was promised to be ready for pick up on Monday, and you find the building closed, it's a total slap in the face. read more

Wow....Just plain wow. Customer service is a dying service. What happened? where did it go? Why is it gone. Please please please, if your in the business of selling things, you have What's called "customers ". These "customers" are more than likely going to spend some money in your business. If your service associate FAILS to acknowledge a customer in the store then your lacking basic skills. Then you fail to make ANY sort of contact with this possible customer because your on the phone then we have some serious problems. To the owner: Please hire associates who know how to make contact with customers and engage with them. I waited over 5 minutes while your associate saw me, ignored me, continued conversation on phone like I was non-existant. Well, Sorry but you lost a possible customer and now have a shitty review.
