Ittadi was definitely that place. They have a huge buffet of food, TONS of options, but you can also tell the food is fresh. And the place was so busy that you know the food didn't sit long and was refreshed often. We tried the coconut samosa, which was large in size. It was the perfect combo of savory and sweet. We also had the egg chop, which is a hard boiled egg covered in spicy mashed potatoes and fried in a crispy breadcrumb coating. It was super spicy (in a good way) and delish. It came with a side of onions and greenery. We also had the haleem, which is a comfort dish, made of lentils. It was so warm and filling. Absolutely delicious. The employees/owners were so kind. They were really invested in us liking our food. When we didn't eat everything, they were concerned, but we told them we were on a food crawl and had to save space, otherwise we would have devoured everything. Again, this was my favorite place of the whole crawl, and I would make the trek back over to Queens just for this food.

The first time, I just walked in by accident just to see what this place was. After having a conversation with their main chef, he tempted me to try their Haleem as a taste test and the rest is history. From there on, whenever I am in Jackson heights, I pick up food from here. The cuisine and style is mostly from Karachi, the spice level is a bit on the higher side, but if you really want to exercise your taste buds, this is the place to go. Like many of the shops along 37th, the space is super tight with an old school exterior look. This is more of a takeout joint than anything, but I imagine coming in for some tea and a snack from the display is doable on a solo adventure. I haven't used the bathrooms yet and given the relatively grimy interior, I'm not sure I would want to. I initially came for the sweets and ended up getting their infamous fuchka and wasn't disappointed. They also serve a halfway decent bortha, which I prefer with potato over the shrimp and tomato. I had tried their beef teheri and the boneless version of their beef kalovuna and give it a thumbs up. The sweets (especially their burfi) were disappointing for how dry they were (both the coconut and gazar were like chalk). Star wise, I'd have to give them a 4 for the food I've tried, but the overall 3 is for the lackluster service. Despite having come here a number of times, it's never been the warmest of encounters. I walked into this place because I thought the name was charming and it looked nice inside. The restaurant is well decorated and immaculately clean. I believe they've only been open for a little longer than a month. I was intimidated by ordering, as they don't have a menu and the food is laid out in a steam table unlabeled- all unfamiliar to me. Thankfully, there was an extremely friendly and helpful employee who seemed genuinely excited to share their cuisine with me. On his recommendation I ordered some goat biryani and a selection of 3 bhortas, or mashed vegetable side dishes. The bhortas were my favorite part of the meal. Served at room temperature, they came in a little plastic bowl together- one potato, one tomato and one fish. The fish one was very interesting. The waiter told me he wasn't sure of the English name of the fish, but it was something similar to an anchovy. The pieces of fish were dried, and some parts were crunchy while others were slightly chewy where the mustard oil dressing had soaked into them. I really enjoyed the blend of textures in this dish, accented by crunchy diced red onion and crisp cilantro stems, as well as the slightly bitter heat of raw green chili. Despite the name of the restaurant, none of this food was extremely spicy, it just had a pleasant kick of heat. The biryani was an enormous portion which certainly could feed two people. The rice was a different species of rice than I'm used to and the grains were very short and small. The rice was all well coated in oil infused with various spices such as clove, cardamom and cumin as well as a strong hit of ginger. The fragrant rice was tossed with crispy fried onions which had a bit of caramelized chew at their center and pieces of goat on the bone. Goat is a slightly gamey, greasy meat, which has often been quite tough when I've tried it. I was surprised by the tenderness of the bites of goat in this dish and the fragrant rice offset any gaminess. The restaurant also has a large selection of desserts, but I was too full after finishing my meal to give them a try. I look forward to returning to Rafa Spicy Cottage, as there are clearly more dishes for me to explore. While I enjoyed the food, my experience was truly made special by the extremely welcoming and friendly server, who helped me immensely and made me feel so comfortable while trying an unfamiliar cuisine.
