Head out to Mission Hill for one of the hottest experiences in Boston! No really, because of all the furnaces they use to blow the glass, even in the dead of winter its tank top season inside Diablo. Diablo is unique because its one of the only public access glass studios in the area, which means its open to people like you and me for classes! I did not know this until I headed out there, but apparently that is very rare! To take classes, you can either head right to Diablo's website to sign-up or you can check for discount classes through MassArt and local adult education programs. I have not actually made it to one of their classes YET, but they hold monthly wine tasting (sometimes also singles gatherings) where some of the experts show you how fancy stem wear goes from little beads of glass to the fancy glasses you drink from! The event are only $35 and lets just say, they keep the wine flowing to help cool you down! Check out the website for event listing http://www.diabloglassschool.com/events.htm

    Just made a glass bead!

Friends and I took a 4-hour private lesson in beadmaking a couple of weeks ago. It was so much fun! We had a great teacher named Peter who taught us some basic lampwork techniques. We learned how to turn on the torch, how to make glass stringer, and wrap hot glass around the mandrel, then how to decorate the bead we made with the stringer we created. We also learned how to make cylinder beads! I made about 10 or 12 beads. Needless to say, the kiln was packed full with beads by the end of the session! I went back the next day to pick up my beads. I was bummed that a bumpy bead I made broke in the kiln - it was so perfect when I placed it inside! Now that we took a lesson, we can go back anytime, and use the torch for $15/hr + supplies. Not bad! I made a freeform beaded bracelet with some of the lampwork beads I made.. Now, I'll have to go back to make more beads. I also hope to take more classes! :D

Such a fun time. Diablo Glass School is just that....a school. They don't sell outside of the school, they aren't manufacturers. If you're looking for an intense first time experience, this is the place to be. Sean (the owner) is an absolute trip. It was almost difficult for me (the most sarcastic person you'll ever meet) to keep up with him. All in good fun, however, as you can clearly see how dedicated he is to his staff, the art, and making sure that we all left with the true experience. I love that man. We did the paperweight class (about 2 hours) and learned all about the hot shop, safety (trust me....pay attention) and then were able to complete the entire piece (with careful supervision). I couldn't believe how much they allowed us to do (but never felt unsafe....Angie kept a close eye on us! My paperweight is currently "cooling" in a 900 degree oven. I can't wait to see it in a couple days! This was a bucket list item that I'm glad I can cross off my list. I'm so glad that I did it at Diablo!

Flower class -- you make 3 each.

A great experience. I would recommend going with a friend that has the same interest for working with glass. There is some parking on the street and its a red color building. Only one entrance.I went with a friend of mine and scheduled a flower glass blowing class. NOTE: In this class there is no actual blowing of the glass. Is more of learning how to work with in a sense "liquid" glass. And don't bring sunglasses. They give you safety glasses. Instructor and two very well versed students ( guessing on age and behavior) but don't be fooled they are fully knowledgable about this art. The class was broken into 3 groups and w rotated for all the parts. Safety was a number one but we still had fun and joked as we were learning. It's funny what how you body reacts as you work with metal and glass that can both burn but yet become a beautiful piece. Best advice relax and don't over analyze-- sorry to all the left handed people but the shop is set up for right handed people. So kind of mental adjusting but there are advantages to being a lefty as well. And what you make has to stay at the studio and to be picked up. Oh and bring water!!

Wow, all I can say is that I had no idea that I'd be doing something so outrageously cool with my Friday night. I went for the "hot shop" version of their Glass Friday class, and it was beyond belief excellent. Sure, it's easy to be impressed when you're dipping a pipe into a 2200 degree F kiln and pulling it back out with molten glass that drips like honey, but... it's more than that. The vibe at Diablo is awesome: convivial and supportive atmosphere; good music; and our instructor Krista was tops. Great, great experience, and a fantastic value for the price too. Two thumbs way, way up!

They sold a me a gift card then went out of business and never refunded the money. Don't trust them. Ever!

Adam was our teacher and he made the two hour experience safe and very fun despite the danger of working around hot glass.

I first heard about Camp No Counselors when I came across an article about them while scrolling…read morethrough Facebook in 2015. I had just started dating my boyfriend (now husband!) and suggested that we go. While it sounded like the coolest and most fun experience ever, I didn't know what to expect. What I experienced at camp was incredible - fun, friendship, laughter, and an amazing sense of happiness. It truly made me feel like I a kid again, but you know, with an open bar! At camp, you can do anything you want and be whoever you want to be. They have campfires, theme parties, a color war, talent shows, boating, waterskiing, capture the flag, and an epic game of Slip and Flip (for those of you who don't know what that is, it's a slip and slide to a game of flip cup), and while I was skeptical of slip and sliding as an adult, I've finally embraced it and can't wait to play again. We've been to camp for the past three years, and I must say, I love it even more every year. I'm able to completely de-stress, unplug, and unwind, all while spending time with old friends and making new ones! I'm booked for camp this year and I absolutely cannot wait! I couldn't recommend this camp enough.

I attended the Boston Camp No Counselor weekend this past labor day weekend at Camp Caribou…read more I'd been debating attending a CNC weekend since I found out about it around the time of its inception. This year, myself and 3 friends pulled the trigger. CNCs description sounded like something out of your wildest dream. Reliving your youth and camping days while mixing in all of the fun aspects of being an adult, while leaving the boring parts behind. If you were like me, you had doubts. How could it live up? Will it fall short of expectations? Will the cabins suck? Will one bad apple ruin the weekend? What if it rains? Is it worth the money? The following are my honest answers... Yes! It lived up. I was completely impressed with the cabins. Large, clean, individual beds- not bunks, private bathrooms inside as well as a cabin house with toilets and showers. As for the people... 120 people, drinking, partying, playing sports, beer pong... And not one fight all weekend. Shocker right? Everyone was friendly and approachable. We made friends fast. CNC did a great job vetting for this camp. The NonCounselors deserve a special shout out. Jacob our director put on a great show. You know when someone just does a job... And then when someone lives for the job? These people lived it. They truly made the camp a great experience with the right level of order while allowing us plenty of freedom. Well now, what if it rains?... Well, it did. Sunday during our color war. We did it anyways... No one had any complaints. Still a great time and Blue took home the gold! Is it worth the money?... The amount of food, booze, and monster energy drinks we consumed this weekend was worth it alone.... Id hate to see that bar tab. As for the experience... I finally found something that made me forget about work for 3 days... It was a rule. The activities were great, wakeboarding on the lake, and dominating at dodgeball made for an exceptional time. An impromptu games of Kings in the cabin was a great way to break the ice. No one was shy or reserved. We all chatted and it was truly like being a kid again, which is what you'd hope for. In conclusion, The people who already made up their mind to go didnt need to read my review. If you are someone on the fence... I hope our experience helps you to make the decision. We'll be going again. I miss it already. Thanks to the CNC staff again, the camp staff at camp Caribou, and all of the people we met. Camp No Counselors is awesome!

So, in other words, if you don't get an A you fail your assignments. I withdrew, brought this to the attention of the Dean, and asked for financial credit so I could take another course instead. She did not respond but simply forwarded my concern to a registrar who refused to do anything about it. The registrar said, wrongly, that the professor was acting in accord with HES policy. The grading system on the website does not in point of fact map onto the grading system of all the professors. So be forewarned that you may end up with a professor who will give you an F if you get less than an A. Don't waste your money at HES and don't expect the administration to act justly. I've matriculated a different program. HES just lost the 30K they would have made if they would have simply rendered a just decision.

There are no Financial Aid options coming from the university itself, and 2 out of 3 student loan companies that their office recommends actually don't really accept Extension School students. The third one needs a lot of extra paperwork that the school isn't willing to help with. In order to enroll you need to pay in full and you don't get a letter of enrollment until after the drop out period, when it's too late. You can't get a loan without paying and you can't get enrolled without a loan. So it's a chicken and egg situation that has no end. They say the university helps cover for you until the loan is approved, but in reality, you have to pay in full first and they will reimburse you after the loan is paid. Which defies the entire point of asking for financial assistance. There is a very short window in which to apply for the loan after registration before being dropped out for non-payment. Paperwork takes more than a month, which is not nearly enough to get everything done. I've spent hours and hours with both the lending officers and the financial aid officers, and in the end, nothing got solved. Nothing. I am unable to join the courses. I am unable to get a loan. I feel like my potential is wasting away... Harvard has failed me.
