We attended a Paint Nite by Yaymaker at Cambridge, 1. Chelsea was friendly and enthusiastic and helpful. She had everything up and ready before the start of class, and she didn't exhibit any annoyance when our large group ended up getting settled late. She also didn't seem to stress when our class ran long. I've done a few Paint Nite type activities and kind of missed being in an actual classroom where I could refresh my cup of paint water at my pleasure. But it was nice that we didn't have to worry about clean up. I don't feel particularly comfortable with a brush in my hand, but even my painting looked pretty decent when class was over. read more

Seriously some the best dates nights we've had! My boyfriend and I initially found a Groupon deal for Plant Nite and, since we'd been meaning to try it out, purchased it and booked a date. They have tons of options on the website -- there were nights featuring succulents, herb gardens, terrariums, and more. It was really simple to find a night and location that suited our needs; I also really appreciated the bar that indicated the level of difficulty for the activity (though most of these are really simple and beginner-friendly). We've been twice now -- I actually won free tickets for the second night. We created a succulent terrarium with sand art and an herb garden. It's ridiculous how easy, fun, and cool these are. Literally, you arrive, pick a seat, put on an apron, order a drink, and everything else is taken care of! The materials are all laid out on table for you and you literally just need to follow the directions of the guide to assemble your masterpiece. Both times, the hosts were extremely friendly and helpful; they were funny and interacted with all the guests. Tickets without the $35 Groupon are around $50 per person -- which can definitely be a little daunting, but when you factor in the materials (the container, markers, sand, soil, pebbles, moss, decorations, and succulents -- which can run between $2-$10 per plant), the numbers kind of even out. Especially if you're not especially plant inclined. All in all, I'd definitely recommend Plant Nite! It's great experience and you get something cool and easy to maintain afterward. read more

Paint Nite is AWESOME. It'll be a perfect night out with your girlfriends or your significant other. TIP#1: There are almost always $25 groupon deals, so it is definitely worth the price. TIP#2: Pregame beforehand and/or buy some drinks inside the venue. (But drink responsibly and don't drink and drive!) The more tipsy you get, the more fantastic your painting gets. As Kevin Pride said to me, "The beer is working!" TIP#3: Arrive at least 15 minutes earlier to ensure that you can sit with the people you want to paint with! The event lasts about 2 hours. First time I went to Paint Nite with my 2 girlfriends and we had an amazing time. We painted the Love Birds and were laughing throughout the whole night. I felt that the direction of the class wasn't great. I didn't feel guided. If u know how to paint, it would give u more freedom but if u don't,like me, and u need more details to make things look good, it is not that great. Some seats had bad light, obviously it is in a restaurant so not all eateries are well lit. Have you heard of paint nite? Where you buy an admission ticket based on art/date/time/location (usually a restaurant) of your choosing, and you get to see a demo of how that painting is done and make one for yourself (or, get inspired to paint something completely different). supplies are included (canvas, paint). you can eat/drink prior/during/after at the restaurant, but my experience tells me drinking is more recommended than a full on meal (no space or time!) during the lesson. now they take that idea to making a terrarium instead of artwork. but i'm guessing due to the nature of the activity (ex. container, soil, gravel, decorative little rocks), many restaurants don't want to bother with that cleanup (only seen a couple steady locations so far), and/or there are too much to transport. so they actually have established a "headquarter" here (where we went), just a venue with tables and chairs, supplies storage, and a gigantic bar. drinks are like dance club prices (slightly better quality and much less slammed lol), and it's a much brighter room. really something anyone can do at home without much knowledge or talent LOL. but it's still a great time to have given the right company. and you get to eat the yummy food in the neighborhood! just note that parking can get a bit difficult so it's wise to arrive early and carpool. agreed with Jeannie D on the pricing as well. but given the materials provided being different (and more), the pricing differential is expected, just not thinking it should be $10/pax more than paint nite. though alternately, you should be able to obtain all the supplies from HD/Lowe's or local nursery and Michael's (Dollar Store/Xmas Tree Shop may have some for cheaper), and make one (or ten) yourself for less than the admission fee. read more

Awesome date night! If your person is ok to get their hands dirty, this is a great date night idea. It's just like Paint Nite. Similarly, they partner with restaurants to host a night where you design a terrarium or plant pot. I chose to go with the "Succulent Terrarium in Double Wooden Drawers" event because it was the only Friday one in the city (too lazy to travel to Somerville after a work week). See their facebook page for events in Boston. What made it a no brainer was that Groupon was offering a 50% off option, too. Once your purchase the Plant Nite Groupon, you still have to go to the Plant Nite website to sign up for the specific event. To my dismay... there are still material fees. It ended up being $24.50/person with the Groupon and another $10/each for the materials. So not bad, though it doesn't include a meal/drinks. Make sure you browse around for promotion codes, there seemed to be a lot out there. I recommend the chrome extension, Honey, which will scan the web for you once you get to check out pages. We ate at home because the event started at 7pm, but usually the restaurants are pretty good. This one was hosted at Brandy Pete's, which is your typical sports bar. You can eat during the event, but it gets pretty messy (I mean, you're working with dirt here), so I'd recommend eating before and getting drinks once you get there. One last thing I'll mention - the instructor was awesome. She wasn't like chatting you ear up or giving a ton of instructions. Great idea but poorly executed! To start, none of the feedback below has anything to do with our instructor - she was fun and talented! I went to a Paint Nite at 730 Tavern in Cambridge and it was set up poorly for this type of event: - There was very little overhead lighting, so my half of the table struggled to see our own paintings. - The seating was set up so that people sitting on one side of the table were cramped and couldn't get in and out easily. - It was impossible to view the instructor and her painting from about 30% of the seats. It seems like these are details that Paint Nite should have figured out. I wasn't expecting a perfect art studio in a bar by any means, but the cramped and dark set up detracted from the experience. I went with 2 friends, figuring we'd have a good time, but I was very skeptical that I'd be able to paint anything close to the painting we'd be shown how to paint. Recently I booked a PaintNite session at Good Life bar in the financial district in Boston for my friend's bachelorette party. There were six of us in the party and I bought our tickets on groupon for $25 a person. $150 total for a group of six to do a two hour paint session isn't a bad deal at all. Especially since they provide the canvas, paint, brushes, aprons, etc. The instructor (Morganna Becker) was funny, helpful and didn't rush through the process. The girls really enjoyed the session-painting while having drinks and checking in to see what others in the group where doing. There was a lot of positivity and laughs. Was fun to see how different each painting could be even though we were all following the same lesson. Drinks obviously weren't involved in the ticket price but it was a full bar. Some girls worried that it was only wine but were happy to find out other drinks could be ordered since they didn't like wine. I would say the only negative for me were the brushes. Including myself, there were two girls in our group that paint regularly and the brushes were making us insane. The bristles were all over the place making it impossible to paint fine lines especially with the smaller brushes. Otherwise-it was a great night our with friends! I got a deal through Gilt and have always wanted to experience Paint Nite. So I am not going to lie when i was excited about going to this. Originally we chose based on painting. It was originally scheduled at North Star but I guess there were issues and they had to relocate to a coffee shop last minute. I mean the whole point of us buying paint nite was so we can have a drink and paint. So at least they let us reschedule without penalties. We chose another date for the same painting (CityScapes) taught by Sarah Beigle, it was held at Barney Fannings. Great service where the waitress made sure we were taken care of through the event. My disappoitnment was that we were seated in a way where we coudln't see the paintings at all! They had 2 displays and both of them didn't face us. We had to get up and take a picture of it with our phone to have an idea of what it even look liked. The artist was facing the complete opposite direction from us and told us she would turn the painting to show us and we still coudln't see because of the lighting. She was not helpful at all, we had to go up and look at what she did because we couldn't see anything even when she turned the painting to us. She was busy helping everybody else and didn't come to the corner where we are. Everybody that saw at the corner where I sat was quite disappointed. The friend that I went with to this event has been to paint nite before and told me it's not usually like that. So maybe it might reassure me to try it again, but if it is anything like i experienced, you are better off trying to paint yourself at home. read more

I tried going to one with my significant other; the day before the event, without fail, every. single. time, I get a cheery email telling me they've cancelled due to some unforeseen circumstances. Paint Nite is what you make of it. Go with great company and have a few drinks and it will be a blast. And isn't that what Paint Nite is all about? The instructor could have provided a bit more instruction, but I'm used to most art teachers being quite lax in their pointers. Most have the "everything is good" mentality. Being an engineer by training, I need structure and rules darn it! But I appreciate their light personalities. ;-) They start by providing you with all the materials you'll need. These include: Paint, Apron, Brushes, Canvas, Water, etc... Then proceed to show you the painting that you're are supposed to replicate. My instructor gave us the option of painting whatever we wanted, so you're not locked into the example. Others in the room spiced things up a bit so you won't feel odd by changing the painting a little or a lot. I had the luck of being surrounded by very nice, supportive individuals. They all went around complimenting each others paintings. It was an awesome vibe and I liked it. One quick note, my Paint Nite took place at Scholars. The staff was nice, attentive and went out of their way to make us feel comfortable. I'm not sure if they're always that way (I will have to visit them again) but they definitively were in this case. read more

I'm glad that Paint Nite was invented so my friends and I could go out without feeling like we needed to just eat or drink every time. My roommate and I bought Groupons for this, cutting the ticket price in half - they always have sales, so keep your eyes peeled and definitely wait until you get a code to sign up. Our session was moved, after we booked it, from a nice place in Central to the Hong Kong in Harvard. Ugh. But we were really there for the painting, not the food. Still, it's a nice idea that you could sign up for one of these to finally get you over to the part of town you've been dying to check out. I found a deal on Gilt City for Paint Nite, so the boy and I headed to Clery's to paint a sunset scape, not really knowing what to expect since neither of us are very artistic. I thought the artist-instructor was fantastic; she apparently is majoring in art education, and it definitely showed. She was patient, clear, encouraging, and upbeat, and made the class really fun, for both the real artistes in the room (not me) and the people who haven't picked up a brush since elementary school (me). It was a casual vibe with lots of beer, and the emphasis was on having fun rather than perfection (we were even encouraged to go off the grid if we didn't like the painting we were doing, or if we had other ideas, or if we were too advanced to follow her patient instruction). I have 0 art skills and wasn't expecting to even like what I'd done, but was actually impressed with my final product... anyone that can get me to make a painting as nice as that deserves a shoutout. Plant Nite (under the original company Paint Nite) is an event scheduled a local bar/restaurant where you can sip cocktails and design terrariums/mini gardens at the same time. There was a deal on Groupon and at first I didn't want to buy it because 1. it was more expensive than Paint Nite and 2. planting looks easy. I mean, all you do is put sand, soil, and plants together right? No - building a terrarium was actually FUN and takes time. I was dragged to one Plant Nite and I never thought I would be so focused on designing the sand patterns and showing some creativity. It was actually stress-relieving. You don't have to know anything about gardening before attending. There is an instructor that guides you and all of the materials will be provided (in my case it was a glass bowl, soil, different colored sand, different types of mini succulents, pretty rocks, moss, and even a small toy dinosaur for fun). Please note that it will get messy! The only thing is the price. It is $50 for one admission - yikes! Yes, it's fun but definitely not worth $50. Even with the Groupon ($35) I thought that was still expensive. I like the concept so I would go again if the price is right! read more

My friend and I had so much fun with this. I got the voucher online and we went to the Clery's location. The instructor was teaching us to paint a bridge over a river... ...well that was how we started. She encouraged us to paint the landscape but also go off on our own if we chose... and we did. In the end, we painted, drank beer and just talked all night, def a great thing to do with a close friend or one you have not seen in a while, or even go stag and meet some young faces! I would go again if asked and highly reccomend Paint Nite to anyone looking for a fun night out. Great time! It was fun putting on my creative hat for an evening. I attended Paint Nite in a Irish bar in Newton to paint 'Sahara Hippo Love'. Jessica was a great instructor, and everyone's paintings turned out surprisingly well! The paint nite space was separated from the regular bar area and wasn't too crowded, although getting a drink at first was a little tough. After getting started, however, the bartenders made frequent rounds to offer more drinks or apps. One complaint is that their website doesn't have a lot of good filter options (like filtering out Newburyport and other faraway locations), so you end up scrolling A LOT to find the right options. read more

Paint Nite is a great concept! My best friend and I were looking for something different to try out and found a deal on Groupon, so why not? Neither one of us have ever painted anything before so we were a little nervous but the instructor was very detailed and the steps were easy to follow! I had a paint night class planned for myself and 5 others that was cancelled due to covid-19. (Totally understandable) However, their customer service is horrible. When we each requested to be refunded, all they could offer was a redemption code to be used for another event which we no longer wanted to do as we don't know when that will be. They stopped answering all messages and emails about refunds and their customer service representative Laura has even blocked a few from our group. Looking into their Facebook page reveals many many more comments of others experiencing the same thing. It's a disgusting shame they get away with this. Would not recommend to others. read more

I attended another Paint Nite recently, this time at Margarita's in Malden, and though my painting turned out surprisingly well, the experience was not great. Once again, they crammed as many seats as possible into two long tables, so there was very little elbow room between people (and NO room for drinks or food), and the room layout made it very difficult to see the instructor or the sample finished painting if you weren't at the front of the rows of tables. Now that I've done 3 paint nites, I know this is the norm, and wasn't just a bad instructor or location. The weird thing was that the room wasn't even full; there was room for at least a few more tables, but rather than use the space to spread people out, a big portion of the room was just empty. Even once the event was well underway and there were a few no-shows, the instructor didn't bother removing the extra easels and paint settings from the tables so we could spread out. On top of that, the restaurant's music was quite loud and could not be turned down, since it was on the same system as the rest of the restaurant, which made it hard to hear the instructor in addition to being difficult to see. Paint Nite is still fun, and $25 (there are always groupons!) is not bad for a couple hours of entertainment. But if you can, do some research on the specific location and instructor before you sign up! read more
