Diamond Head Dog Park is a wonderful spot overall, especially for its location and sense of community. The park is spacious, has great views, and is a popular place for dogs to socialize and burn off energy. Most of the dog owners are friendly and attentive, which creates a welcoming and relaxed atmosphere. It's clear why this park is such a favorite for locals. That said, cleanliness is an area that could really use improvement. On several visits, there has been noticeable dog waste left behind, along with overflowing or poorly maintained trash areas. This takes away from an otherwise great experience and can be unpleasant for both dogs and owners. With more consistent cleaning and better enforcement of waste pickup, this park could easily be one of the best dog parks around. It has so much potential, and a little extra care would go a long way. read more

Great off leash dog park with a separate area for smaller dogs. It has shady trees and benches and a dog water fountain. This is a volunteer run park that is not maintained by the state. Its been a hit or miss. Some days the dog owners are great respectful, responsible and watch their dogs well....other times owners come here and let their dogs go and don't pick up their poop which ruins it for everyone! Please be responsible and watch your dog if you come and i dont recommend dog parks if your dog is not friendly it can be dangerous for others. I do love coming here after the KCC farmers market so convenient and parking lot across the street is accessible just hide your valuables. read more

Note: I noticed that some of the Yelp photos posted are for Diamond Head State Monument (where you hike up Diamond Head). This Yelp page is for Diamond Head Bark Park, which is the dog park located outside of Diamond Head, next to Diamond Head Mortuary. This is the first dog park we've visited since moving back home to HI from the mainland. I was a bit nervous after reading some of the reviews mentioning apathetic handlers with aggressive dogs, and dog walkers that bring lots of dogs that they can't possibly keep a close eye on. However, these are also issues we've experienced at other dog parks, and I'm planning to only take our dog on weekday mornings to lessen the risk of running into these issues (plus less risk of overheating). We stopped by at around 8am on a weekday morning. It was surprisingly lively--a good number of handlers and their dogs but still lots of space for everyone to romp around. Some of the reviews said that the American Heart Association parking lot is shared with Bark Park visitors but when we visited, it said for AHA patrons only. We parked in the lot across the street from AHA (on the right side of the street if you're coming from KCC side). Parking is free and the lot is open from 6am - 10pm. You have to cross the street to get to the Bark Park and there is no crosswalk--be careful and keep your dog close to you and crossing! There is only one entrance to the fully fenced off dog park, which is double-gated. The entrance is along a busy street so please take care to fully secure both gates when entering and exiting. This is a decent sized park--much bigger than I was expecting! Lots of space for dogs to stretch their legs and get their zoomies out. Also lots of space for dogs like mine who prefer to play/explore on their own rather than with other dogs. There is a decent amount of shade from the trees and ample areas for handlers to sit. When you enter, there is a bulletin board with information about the park and a place where you can get free poop bags (we bring our own). There is a lending library on the side where you can contribute/browse through/take books on dogs--so cute! On the tree to the left of the bulletin board is a coat rack hammered into the tree where you can hang your dog's leash. There is a step-on dog water fountain under the trees to the right (no water bowls with standing water). On the American Heart Association side of the park, there are two small separate areas that you can take your dog to if they need their own space. However, you can only enter these areas by walking through the main park. On the mortuary side of the park, there is a monument for the Bark Park founder's dog, and a bulletin board with memorial placards for other dogs (I assume those who regularly visited the Bark Park). I would highly recommend applying dog-friendly insect repellent before visiting the park! I thought mosquitos wouldn't be an issue cause that area is so dry but the Bark Park turns on sprinklers daily from 11am - 1pm (not ideal for water conservation but their signage says that they do so because it saves on their water bill, plus it's a way for dogs to cool off during the hottest times of the day). I'm guessing that contributes to the mosquito issue--I left with a lot of itchy bites on my legs! This is a fully volunteer-maintained and donation-funded dog park so I would recommend donating and helping out when/where you're able to, especially if you become a regular visitor. Dog-friendly open spaces are so limited in Hawai'i and you can tell that this park was created/is maintained with dogs and dog-lovers in mind! Just a short walk from KCC, this dog park has become one of my pup's favorite places! We love coming here after the Saturday Farmer's Market at KCC. There's a small parking lot across the street which is pretty convenient. There's lots of mature trees and it's a large space! There's tons of space for the dogs to run and play around. They even have a smaller enclosure for small dogs but since the park is so big - I think that dog owners of all sizes usually utilize the main space. You'll find lots of toys like balls left around for anyone to play with. There's a water fountain for the dogs that is activated by stepping on a button. My dog loves the water fountain here. I really like that there's seating for humans too! Wearing nice shoes or clothes you're afraid of getting dirty is probably not the best idea. Dogs are running around in the grass and dirt, and stuff happens. As with all dog parks, it's important to keep an eye on your dog and be proactive if you think that any issues may arise between your pup and another dog. From my experience, the dog parents that I have met here have all be respectful and responsible. I think it's really cool that this park is owned by a non-profit! It's in such a prime location, they really could put so many different *money making* things in this space, but I'm so glad that we are able to enjoy it as a dog park. read more

My husband and I took our dog here on a late Saturday afternoon. Parking is diagonally across the street in a small empty lot with unmarked stalls and lots of signs warning about break-ins so beware of leaving your valuables in your car. We saw people park next door in the lot for the American Red Cross, ignoring the barricade with the sign saying parking was only for the ARC. The dog park is on the corner, bordered by the Diamond Head cemetery and the ARC. It's kind of weird to see the cemetery beyond the chain link fence. Entering the dog park requires you to open the first gate from street level, then go down some stairs to the ground level to enter the second gate. It is easier to get through the gates entering than it is exiting. There's an informational kiosk right by the entrance and and QR code to scan to make donations to help with upkeep of the park. Our dog is accustomed to our neighborhood's private dog park which is on a much smaller scale, but well kept. Diamond Head's Bark Park's grass was pretty overgrown at the time of our visit and there were lots of dog poop just waiting for us to unwittingly step in them. There were also patches of dirt and mud, mostly by the one water fountain on the far end of the park closest to the ARC. There is a smaller gated area in the corner of the park closest to the cemetery and the ARC. It's not a very open area as it housed several benches and a shed. All around the park there's left behind toy balls, ropes, etc., for other dogs to play with. There's also benches and chairs scattered around the park, but they don't seem very clean nor very stable to sit on. Closest to the cemetery side, there's a memorial site for dogs, I'm guessing, who used to frequent the park. There were a few dogs there who are much bigger than our little shih tzu-terrier, but my dog is scrappy and if he wasn't feeling another dog being too much in his business he will start snarling and snapping, in which case we scoop him up and tell him he's crazy to want to fight with the big dogs. It's nice to have a big, open area for our dog to run around, but it was also difficult to keep up with him when he wandered too far from where we were. I'm sure the Bark Park is an even nicer park to go to when the grass is cut and everything is poop scooped. Hopefully when we return we can experience that version of the park. read more

Damn dog owners are no joke! lol Been coming here with some of the homies to keep their puppers happy and to burn off some steam lol Majority of the owners are hella good with their dogs and pick up after them and their dogs are fairly well trained. One time I got bit in my ass lmfao by a puppy, but whatever the owner apologized. There's a little smaller section for shy dogs and lots of places for owners to congregate and chill while their dogs roam around. Parking is across the way. Hands down, the worst and most dangerous dog park on the island. 1) The quantity of large dog poop littered in various areas of the park. Owners are not paying attention or picking up the poop. 2) The sheer large expanse of the park makes reaching and breaking up dog fights difficult. Those few seconds of delay could result in injuries and thousands in vet bills. 3) There are dogsitters who frequent and use this dog park, bringing in as many as 6-8 dogs. They are flat out inattentive, faces glued to the phones in their hands and not monitoring the dogs in their care. My dog's safety comes first. And this place just jeopardizes that on so many levels. read more

This park stinks. Literally. Once you walk in the double gates it smells like poop and flies are all over the place. There is also no grass in the front so your dog gets so dirty. The park is large and your dog gets free range off leash. However. Majority of the dogs that come here are huge and my dog was attacked a lot as a puppy from all of these huskies which led to her having severe aggression as she's gotten older. One time she got pawed by one so hard that she Yelped so loud. She's learned terrible behavior here and I wish I've never taken my dog here as a puppy to socialize. Parking is across the street and you'll have to jay walk over. But at least there's something. Honestly if I had to redo anything - I would have never taken her here. I might have had a completely different dog. Now with my new pupper is trying things differently. If you're coming here to socialize your dog at a young age I'd recommend that you stay away from dog parks and 1. Ask your friends if they have any dogs and socialize with them in a controlled environment 2. Puppy playtime at petco which offers one on one supervised play. I only briefly was able to enjoy this park because my poochie was not so nice. We're trying to socialize him and it seemed like a safe place (all enclosed) but I think it was too much for my dog (seeing other dogs and being unleashed) and he became aggressive towards a bigger dog. We left but hopefully can return when he is better adjusted. There are rules like any enclosed dog park, lots of dog bags and people seemed genuinely friendly. Parking is pretty much across the street on DH side. We warned that although parking is for dog park users and Red Cross, I saw tourists parking there to go to DH. read more

Big dog park. Some days it's okay. But other days there are some dogs that are not so friendly. There was even a dog fight one day between two pit bulls. There are kiawe trees in the park so I step on a couple of kiawe torns. Might injure your pup if it steps on one. There's a quarantine area on the side for smaller dogs. There are some spots that are muddy when it rains. I always have to wipe my dog's feet when I get home. There are doggy bags available free to use. Also a water fountain for the dogs. Some seating areas for people to sit. Recently, there was a shelf of used books on dog free to anyone to pick or drop off. Parking is across from the park but most times there are no spaces. You can park further down in a public parking area which some Diamond Head visitors park. read more

There's simply nothing bad to say about this wonderful dog park! Quintessentially local, it mixes the island vibe with the free-spirited, unadulterated fun of dogs at play. A huge space, there can be tons of dogs present with no congestion - everyone can have their own area to run, smell, and play. Our dog Max loved the cool breezes and the doggie water fountain... as well as chasing after the birds who also like to hang out there. So I have come across multiple owners that either can't control their dog or too busy looking at their phone to watch their dog. Dog poop is left in the park because the owners are not paying attention. Also my dog has suffered many cuts and bites that caused bleeding from other dogs. When I ask them to control their dog they just ignore me. I then ask them to pay for the vet bill and then they leave without saying a word. I've been to 3 other dog parks, this is the only one so far where violent behavior is ignored. read more

My big dogs and their owner LOVES this park!! Wide open spaces, lots of shade and benches AND a water source for a quick doggie drink. Plus tiny waste baggies and serviced trash cans where responsible owners can pick up after their pups. This is a off-leash park where dogs can learn to pack socialize and run. My only comment is there is no place for tiny dogs or puppies as some big dogs play hard and rough. read more

My cousin and I are always looking for things to do with our puppies. They are active and love to play. We're very particular about where we take them and how clean places are and this place is pretty clean. It's fairly clean considering this is a dog park. Very open and lots of room for the doggies to run around. All the dog owners we have encountered here are very good about picking up their dog waste and watching their dogs. Another good thing is they have a few sprinklers running to keep the dogs cool while they play. If you forgot dog toys don't worry there's plenty here.There is plenty of shade and benches for the pet parents to hang out and sit while the dogs play. The only down side to this park is they have the sprinklers running quite a bit so the dirty can get kind of muddy. Over all we like this dog park and will keep coming back here. read more

My dog and I have been to the Hawaii Kai, Mililani mauka, Moanalua dog park and today the Diamond head bark park. So, here is my review on this park. The bad: the parking is located across the street from the park, so you need to carefully cross the street to the park. Then the entrance, gate to the park, (this is the only park so far) has steps leading down to the park, a little dangerous for an active dog and owner. You need to keep an eye on your dog because my dog almost got attacked by a dog today. Aggressive dogs shouldn't be in the park! The good: it's a nice size park for your dog to run. It has quite a bit of benches for you to sit and nice shady areas too. The grass was a little long, but the dogs didn't mind, a little hard to find and pick up your dog poop! . The water area is great because you step on a button and it automatically fills water in the bowl, keeping the water fresh at all times! read more

We really like this place as it's convenient in town to get to and it's really quite nice here. There's lots of open space for dogs to run as well as many balls around for them to play with. Other than the the highlights, there are a few cons that kind of ruin the park a little. -Parking across the street can be horrible at certain times. There is a large sign that specifies parking is for the dog park only. Yet tons of tourists and people going on the nearby hikes will take all the parking spaces and don't really care at all that they shouldn't be parking there. -Realistically this could happen anywhere at any park, but it's been getting worse lately. There are many irresponsible dog owners that are not paying attention to their dogs and do not pick up their poop. As a result, there are many piles of poop just randomly laying around. Some others do see their dog poop, and don't care to g clean it up. There is no excuse for this as there are multiple stations that have dog waste bags available for everyone to use -Again with people not paying attention to their dogs; I've seen many dogs get into fights here as the owners are sitting on the opposite side of the park from their dog, who is out making trouble and harassing other dogs a little too aggressively. By the time something happens, it takes far too long for them to arrive to control their dog. I've seen numerous times where one dog will attack or constantly harass another dog, to the point the owner if the harassed dog is trying to break up the dogs and the offending dog's owner is no where to be found. Dogs will be dogs and rough play and all, but it's up to their owners to be right there to make sure things don't escalate to the point it needs to be broken up. Some owners are there don't see a problem with their dog harassing other dogs and will just stand there watching, doing nothing to control their dog and think it's fine that their dog is escalating tensions with other dogs and owners The majority of dog owners who come here are friendly and responsible, but there is becoming a steady increase of non-attentive owners bringing their overexcited dogs and not supervising them which causes problems. read more

I really like Bark Park. It's the perfect amount of space for Kintsugi. As soon as we enter the gate and I let him off his leash he's off to the races. He plays with all the dogs and joins in on whichever dog is running around. It's hard to follow him along sometimes so its perfect that there are a plethora of different benches and seats spread throughout the park. I could easily centralize myself and keep an eye on his every movement. I try to let Kintsugi burn all his energy but whenever we try to leave he wittingly outruns me and goes back to playing. All the other dogs and owners are friendly. I've met great regulars. The funny thing about having a fur child is that you introduce your dog before you even introduce yourself haha. So despite seeing certain people often, I only know them by their dog's name. "Oh you're Spot's (random name) owner!" Trash cans are easily accessible so you don't have to trek too far to toss your baggies. There's also a smaller enclosure within the park for our smaller friends or young pups. There's one water fountain for all the dogs. Perhaps if there were bowls spread throughout it'd make it easier on our best friends. But there's always someone near the fountain willing to press down on the button for the dogs. Parking across the street is a bit small but somehow everyone makes it work. As always be careful with your belongings and of course lock your car. You can see the parking lot from the park so there's not much need to worry. read more

Diamond Head Bark Park: "It's where da bitches at" (Review done by Koa M, subbing for Meg M) Dude, ya know when you just feel blahhhh? Too many treats- ohhhh treats!- and not enough chasing birds or humping pillows? Well Justin U and Mom (Meg M) thought I could use a romp around a dog park. Yea, yea, yea they always spout this stuff about socialization and this weird guy names Cesar Milan, dog torcher-er or something like that.... but if it had to do with being outside, running and other dogs, I was down for it. Man, this place was a veritable smorgasbord of smells- I coulda stayed here for hours just smelling the perimeters! But better than that- there were DOGS THERE! I mean you had your prissy shit-zus not shutting up (so not attractive) but then you also had this gorgeous boxer, pit mix.... (if I knew how to whistle I would) (I don't know about the mixed breed in the back. He tried some R. Kelly action on one of the pomeranians that I wasn't a fan of...) As great as my two hours here was, it was a little bit of a challenge of a situation.... I mean I really wanted to socialize and everything but I HAD to protect Mom from who knows what could get her. She seemed a little anxious sitting there reading and sipping her iced coffee. Ugh she had the gall to ignore me, hoping it would convince me to play more but you just can rush these things, you know? I'm a pretty big deal, dogs come to ME. (Except for when I need to sniff their butt to check em out) Mom was a little upset when I jumped up on her and got her pants dirty- c'mon, mom, thats what you get! There could have been more grass but there were garbage cans- for peeing on obviously- trees, and even a doggie sized water fountain. Basically, we need to come back AND check out the ones in Mililani. (A jack russell from Waipio pointed me in that direction) I am still panting from the work out but these dog parks- what a genius idea! read more

FIRST OF ALL.... Treat your dogs for fleas before coming by. I know...duh it's a dog park but seriously, there are fleas a-plenty. There is a little cage where you can put your dog if it's misbehaving, anti social or just plain scared of big ones (as mine is). I'm not sure the reason why one would go to a dog park then separate their dog but hey, maybe it works for some. There are some muddy spots and dirty dog toys laying around but I don't think the dogs mind one bit. There are little dog "clicks" and thankfully, in spite of my 6# dog being scared out of her mind when I first put her down, she was able to find a small pact where she fit right in and that the larger dogs avoided. There is also a super cool doggie water fountain. I dig it. Parking is across the street in an unpaved lot. read more

My dog and I absolutely love the bark park. It's our favorite on the island. The parking was a bit tricky at first. It's located across the park but it's limited. There's additional parking at KCC. Restrooms are located at KCC as well. The entrance to the park is double gate and one family at a time. For me, this helps me get situated before entering the park. The people and dogs are friendly. I had not been to any dog park before I came to this park about a week ago. I was very impressed with the double gated entry to prevent others' dogs from running off, a free supply of plastic (for poop) bags, though I brought my own, and plenty of piped in clean water sources for the dogs. There were also benches and concrete tables (though some were broken) for us humans...at least I think they're for us...and a water fountain for Great Danes and humans to share. What I didn't like was that there were a bunch of old balls and dog toys left scattered about. While this might seem convenient for some, most of the toys had a layer of dirt on them that was no doubt at one time a combination of mud and saliva from other animals. My son tried to play fetch with an old tennis ball that he found, but fortuantely our dog would have nothing of it. There was also a good about of poop left from other less-courteous dog owners. The signs at the park ask you to pick up you dog's poop, which I did, but to also pick up any nearby "orphaned" poop, which I could not bring myself to do. Overall though, I was pleasantly surprised and am sure we'll be back there again. read more

I can not begin to say how much this park means to me. When I first moved to Hawaii, I had a very hard time meeting people. Going to Bark Park has not only introduced my pup to many new friends, it also helped me make friends. It's a great place to socialize and everyone bonds quickly. There is a sense of ownership at the park and regulars are quick to spread the aloha. Living in a cramped condo, my pouch is home all day long in a small area. I try to take her daily to Bark Park. It's wonderful for them to get out and run around. It assists in releasing their energy and helps them be better behaved dogs at home. This beautiful park is full of flowers and plants. It's very relaxing and my favorite time to go is on weekend mornings when it's quite and I can just sit with a good book while my pup plays. If you are looking to socialize your dog, the best time to go is on weekdays around 5:30pm when the workday crowd is taking there dogs out. Usually at this time there are around 20 plus dogs there. Poop bags are provided and owners MUST pick up after their pets. There's a water fountain for people and for pets, lots of benches for sitting and even a community board where you can post messages. Parking is across the street in the lot shared by Bark Park and The Red Cross. It is free to anyone who is going to these locations. Owners with agressive dogs should not bring them to the park. Friendly and socialized dogs only please! See you there! read more

Do not recommend for young dogs. Too many older dogs with bad manners and owners unwilling to discipline or control their pooches. Your dog will pick up bad behavior here. Another dog kept trying to hump mine ( a four month old puppy ) for our 45 minute visit. The owner/dog walker refused to take them out of the park. They almost totally checked out. I had to keep pushing the dog off mine just to leave the park and the other owner reprimanded me! Be wary. Do NOT come during happy hour. Leave at the first inkling of trouble. read more

I frequent this area on the weekends, since I run up and down Diamond Head Road and the surrounding areas. Very recently, I was asked to dog sit, and knowing me with dogs, I didn't know what to expect. I found out that, she (the dog) wasn't too bad, although she kept jumping on me like I was a sofa bed. I knew this was a favor to a friend of mine, while she was on the mainland for a few days visiting family, so I offered to take her dog. The Diamond Head Bark Park was your neighborhood park, but for dogs and their owners. It's just like any other park, although really small and fenced in, for the dog's protection from vehicular traffic and pedestrians. Most people would bring their K-9's after work, so late afternoon till early evening, until it gets dark. Its fun to see other dogs interacting and see how they socialize. Sometimes, fights can brake out, but it's kind of hard to see if they are just playing or fighting. Maybe I'm just a newbie when it comes to this kind of thing. Also, the smell of doggie urine is a turn off, but you tend to tolerate it. There is parking in a small lot nearby. It's located next to the Diamond Head Cemetary, so it's a bit creepy, but at least the park is in a desirable area. There are parking spots at Kapiolani Community College too. The park is kept up by the users of the park, so I'm not sure if there is a periodic clean up that goes on here by the State Parks and Rec department. read more

I love this park because my dog loves this park, but since his vocabulary is limited, I'll be the one writing this review on his behalf. After frequenting all of the dog parks from town all the way to Hawaii Kai, I have come to a conclusion of the five elements of evaluation for dog parks: 1. Cleanliness 2. Spaciousness 3. Safety 4. Upkeep 5. Comfort for Humans Cleanliness: FULL STAR I didn't see any dog poop anywhere in the grass as I ran around with my dog. This is a first for any dog park, so kudos to Diamond Head for that. Also, there was little to no bird poop on the benches, which I thought was awesome, because no one wants to sit amongst fecal matter, even if it is dried up and from a bird. Spaciousness: FULL STAR Plenty of space for my dog to sniff and run around. I like that there is a bit of a hill going toward the cemetary, so the dogs can get a little extra exercise with that. Also, some people don't like that the park is located next to a cemetary. I think it's beautiful. I hope this doesn't make me a morbid person. Safety: ZERO STARS Not that the crowd is dangerous at this park, but after today's incident, I have to minus one star in hopes that the situation improves. I encountered two wack jobs today right on the parameter of the park. One guy was harmless, but the other one came barging into the park, and started kicking at this one lady's two dogs. He then grabbed a really huge stick and tried to beat on them with it. This was all going on as I was on the phone with the police. The dogs were fine after everyone at the park did their part to kick him oht. The man rode off, and I think the cops followed him after that. Upkeep: FULL STAR There is a water fountain for the dogs to drink straight out of, and a human height one to refill personal water bowls brought from home. Plenty of plastic bags stored throughout in case your dog makes a mess, but you forgot your own bags to clean up after him/her. Also, there is a lost and found, so cute! Comfort for Humans: FULL STAR Plenty of benches and picnic tables. Also, plenty of shade under the lush trees. A wonderful oasis for all! So aside from the crazy people who lurk around the fence of the park (which isn't that often to be honest), this is a great place to spend some quality time with your fur baby. I highly recommend this park. Just...maybe bring some pepper spray? read more

This is a good-sized park and relatively clean. We like to bring our dog here when it's not too crowded so he can socialize and play. People and dogs are friendly the half dozen times we went. There's also a good amount of seating and shade for us humans to be comfortable. Overall... I would recommend it! read more

My dogs always have a blast here. Owners here are pretty good about picking up after their dogs, but you still gotta watch your step for the occasional landmine. read more
