Overall I'd say Diane's alterations just doesn't live up to their exorbitant prices. Pants hemming is 14$ pair which is reasonable and only slightly higher than other tailors; however to get the sleeves on my blazer shortened I was charged 54$ for chopping a few inches off the wrist of an unlined coat. Totally unreasonable. Also, I was never once told or explained the price breakdown during the fitting so when I came to pick up my garments the cost was actually a bit surprising to me. Finally, I specifically asked for them to call me when my things were done and ready for pickup so I could get my items as soon as possible, but I never received a call. The work itself was pretty standard. Sounds like turnaround time averages about 1 week. They do not take credit card by the way - Cash, Check or Debit only. Parking: no designated spots and no close street parking. You can maybe pull off illegal parking in the neighboring lots but risk ticket or tow. Will I be back? Maybe...? Nothing stood out in my mind as great enough to warrant those prices so probably not anytime soon. read more

I needed my tunic shortened so the neckline would be higher. I specifically asked them to take it up at the shoulders. I was fine with what that would do to the overall shape of the sleeves. I asked them to do it a specific way the first time, and they argued with me. I relented, provided they pinned it so that no cleavage was showing. The following week, I came to pick it up and, surprise surprise, it wasn't what I wanted. The neckline was still low enough to show cleavage. They offered to shorten it again. Next week, I returned to find that there wasn't enough material left to taper it to the cuff. As a result, the cuff is much bigger than the sleeve. Now instead of effortlessly chic, the tunic looks cutesy. If they had done it the way I asked the first time, they wouldn't have run into this problem. I would have appreciated if they offered me a discount or a coupon to give them another chance. They get one star for not ruining my garment and another for Lizzie's patience when I picked it up the second time. Overall, certainly not worth the $30. read more

I have been going to Diane's for years, and super bummed when she needed to move her location - the parking is horrible, except that I get to stop into Grand Central Bakery when I visit. I've had her team hem/mend/adjust pretty much everything from jeans to wedding attire and even a favorite sweater that really needed to go - but I wanted one last winter with it. My family and I keep coming back. Diane is a matter of fact person. She's pleasant but direct - which I like. Her team is able to work magic on anything I've brought in. If you need the work done right, her teams for you. They're not the cheapest, but also not the most expensive either. (You get what you pay for, right?) I recommend! read more

"It's Pretty Obvious" It's pretty obvious that we won't be going back to Diane's. The owner has a bit of an attitude and can be prickly at times. Initially, we were quite happy with her work, although her assistants are not quite as skillful. One measured me for having PJs taken in, and I needed to have the work done over, and even then the PJs did not fit right, i.e., they kept falling down. So, I had elastic put in and when we picked them up, we were told off for basically coming in too close to their 3:00 closing time: "You know, people have schedules," quoth Diane. True, I did come in a few minutes before closing, but we did not quite expect to be told off. She told us to come in by 2:30 in the future for fittings, and when I remarked that it didn't say that on the web site, and she hadn't told us about this policy before, she said, under her breath, as we were leaving, that "it's pretty obvious." So two stars for occasional good work, but a loss of three stars for dissing the customer. read more

I went here twice to get two different pairs of jeans hemmed because it's close to my home and I figured it was convenient. Oh, big mistake. BOTH pairs of my pants came back uneven. I mean the first time it was slightly uneven so I waived it off, but the second time it happened it was about an inch different. Really people?!?! You can't even check to see if the legs are straight?!?! I'm sorry completely unacceptable. I mean, I joke that my hip is turned and that one leg is slightly higher up than the other...but it's really not noticeable and an inch of pants difference does not need to happen to compensate for it (it was the wrong leg too...so I can't even try to defend her by saying that's what she was going for) Overall, don't waste your time here. read more

As a locally-owned, woman-run business, I really want to support them, but there are too many things off with how they run their business that I regretfully have to give one star and ask others to consider their options before coming here. It comes down to one clear theme: this place needs to have more respect for its customers. I had a wedding to go to and had to have a dress taken in. Despite the mixed reviews, I wanted to give Diane's a chance. I shouldn't have. First, my dress was hacked up. The work was not done well and there were strings still sticking out of the alterations. The work looked shoddy and obvious. This was by no means a complicated job. Second, the experience with the staff, Diane included, was negative. Even though alterations and tailoring should be a service and trade industry, they made it feel like they were 'doing me a favor' and my work was an imposition. Even though this was a standard, basic order and I didn't ask for anything extra. From first call through fitting and pickup, in all interactions, each one of the staff seemed irritable and put-out. Note - I didn't even ask for a rush order. Third, the work was expensive. I mean, really expensive. I'm happy to pay good money for a great tailoring experience, but their prices are really high for the service and work you get. Lastly, it was clear the floors hadn't been cleaned since I had gone in for the fitting a few weeks prior. The same pins and papers were littered around. This was one of those bad experiences that was so off-the-mark on all levels, that you don't even bother mentioning it and just walk away - because the reasons for it are so obviously systemic. You just decide that even if you brought it to their attention, they just wouldn't get it. read more

I live on Maui. I was visiting Seattle and got an overcoat out of storage there. The coat, best described as a heavy wool, full length peacoat needed some serious repairs, as in one of the sleeves was almost falling off! The weather was 20° colder than I was used to on Maui and I really needed my coat! I brought it to Diane's Alterations and she did a beautiful job making the needed repairs for a very reasonable price and got done in two days! Pretty overpriced for basics. Brought in a casual sportcoat to have the sleeves shortened, and they wanted to charge $58 for it. Super expensive for a basic procedure. It wasn't even being shortened from the shoulder, which would justify the high price. Took it to Nordstrom, paid double their usual rate for being an outside item, and it was still only $34. Probably a good place for dresses and complicated stuff, but for basics look elsewhere. read more

I would be naked without Diane's Alterations! Seriously, I am 4'11" and EVERYTHING needs to be tailored, even tee shirts. The folks at Diane's not only do a great job, if asked, they will make suggestions about how to tailor for the best look. Diane herself recently suggested I return something instead of having it tailored because the garment wasn't worth the tailoring necessary to make it look right. Everyone has been quite wonderful to me. For some of the tailors, English is a second language, so perhaps customers mistake this for rudeness. I needed my bridesmaids dress hemmed on short notice (because I procrastinated). I went to other places that were booking at least two weeks out. As a last Hail Mary I called Diane's Alterations. The seamstress was really accommodating and was able to help me that day. She got it done by the day I asked, and then I asked for one more alteration (I know, I suck) which she did without any issue. Diane's Alterations is not my usual tailor, but in a pinch and for conveniences sake I've taken a few things to be altered here. For simple things like hemming jeans, I take it here since it's a 5 minutes drive and the prices aren't too bad. I recently brought in some dress shirts to be taken in for $38 a pop. I did get the shirts on sale and wasn't in the mood to drive to my usual tailor in Renton, so I didn't feel too bad about it. They've done a good job on all my alterations, but I feel the labor is overpriced. I'll most likely look elsewhere next time I need something altered in a pinch. read more

I spend $74 to cut the bottom of my dress shorter, they ask me wait for 5 business days, I didn't rush them or anything, I came the day they wrote down on the paper to delivery the dress, the woman just tell me "I'm not ready for your dress". Then I wait for another day like they said it will be ready. Again, I waited like another half hour in the store for my dress to get down. What makes me mad is they don't even call me to tell me they are delayed, they only tell me they are not done each time I get there. read more

I brought in a traditional Native American regalia shirt that needed new buttons. The women in the shop looked at my shirt and wanted nothing to something it and gave me a lot of attitude. Now who knows what goes through their mind but the sense I got was the racist type. Whether that's true or not that how this business made me feel. I recently did my first Bikini Competition as my 45th birthday, I planned it for years. I have done 7 Figure Competitions before and I was going to modify one of my suits. Those suits are about $600-700 each, they were tailored to me and covered with Swarovski crystals. I had Diane tailoring one of my favorite suit from a Figure to a Bikini Competition suit. Well, after she charge me $98 she gave me a THONG!!!! The night before my trip to Spokane (the event location) I went to pick up my competition suit and the first thing she says is: "I got carried away..." well, THANKS!!!! Now I'm freaked out! She just destroyed my event! It cost a thousands of dollars to compete! Hotel, travel, food, tanning, training, nutritionist, suit, event fees (lots of fees)... and the amount of hours dedicated, friends coming from out of state to support me and she just destroyed my entire show! When I asked to fix it she said that her hands were hurting, she had other things to do and she really wanted to go home at 6... I was devastated! I will never forgive her insulting attitude! She made me feel like I meant absolutely nothing! I'm still very angry about it! I managed to borrow a suit from one of the competitor, I was lucky that this lady had an extra and it fitted me right. I went back to Diane to ask for $98 refund and she simply tells me that she did what I asked and she won't refund me... REALLY?!? I never talked about a Thong Competition!!! Now, my beautiful suit is ruined! I'll never be able to use it, or sell it.... Thanks for absolutely nothing! I hope many competitors read my review and NEVER go to her. read more

A number of years ago I bought a new coat which I loved but which needed to be taken in. The tailoring was somewhat tricky, but Diane's did a lovely job on the coat and I am still enjoying wearing it. When I saw that Diane's was moving I was bummed, but glad it was still not far away. I ventured out to find the new location when my next need for a repair occurred. After one visit it now feels pretty easy to park for free and walk half a block to get there. Terrible customer service. I called to see if they could clean up an inch and a half of stitching on a seam on my shirt, and when I asked if they could do a two day turn around the owner reluctantly said yes, and when I asked for a price range she told me that she thought it was rude to try and lock her into a bid. I began to explain that it isn't rudeness to make sure it's a price *range* I think is reasonable before rushing over because they were closing soon but before I could finish my sentence she hung up on me. Who does that? That's not the type of person I can trust to not be careless, and I understand it is a small job, but small jobs turn into lifetime business relations. I dropped off items on 7/29 and was told I needed to prepay (over $400 for 3 blazers, a top and a dress). The "date due" promised was 8/7. Weeks turned into months and each time I came back I was told my items had been "set aside" and weren't even started. After several visits and some strong words I got a call that the items were completed on 10/8--more than two and a half months after I'd dropped them off, and long after they were to be completed. I love to support local businesses, but this was beyond the pale. Take your items elsewhere. read more

I'm sorry to post such a negative review- but this place is terrible. I went there because I wanted to support a woman owned business. I wish I had been able to read a review first. I needed to have two suit pants hemmed. No big deal. One pair was lined. We're not talking fancy fabrics or wool and silk here...more like polyester. I dropped the pants off on Saturday at 9 am and asked if they could be ready for the interview Monday. No problem - they were ready by 5 pm Sat. Points for that. However- first- the changing room was kinda scuzzy- (like an overused second hand store) so it didn't feel comfortable even real quick standing barefoot as I changed. When I came out the staff (maybe even owner?) only pinned (with 2 pins) one leg. Even worse *sorry lady* she had the WORST B.O.! I was standing there holding my breath (effectively 'sucking in'- altering the half-a*sed measurement) Woof! All this trauma and I go and pick up my pants before the interview on Monday and get sticker shock. Is $35 too much to pay for hemming two pairs of pants? I think so. *WORSE* I get home and my sharp suit (the one with the lining) has pucker marks at the hem!! AND one leg is different than the other! This is a result of my body being slightly different on each side!! I am so distressed to discover this 30 minutes before my interview. I was very angry and absolutely DO NOT recommend this place. I have had about 10 pairs of pants (maybe more) hemmed here. Prices are standard to me - about $10 for a regular hem and $20 for an original hem. Seems to be the same pricing everywhere I go. The quality has been good - not a single bad experience really...well at least in terms of getting my pants hemmed. I go here because it's convenient from my house and better than changing in some makeshift closet and standing out in front of all the customers that file in and out of my drycleaner's. And they have told me the price of each hemming before I left - so I think that's pretty fair. I can't say I've had any sticker shock because I knew exactly what I was paying. To be fair, I didn't mind the changing rooms given my prior experience at the drycleaner's. It didn't seem that dirty to me, but maybe my tolerance is rather high. Perhaps I was just happy that they actually had a real changing room. That being said, the people who work here never have a smile on their face. While they haven't been rude to me, they are definitely not friendly. They don't seem to be particularly happy that you're there or to answer your questions. It's almost as though they'd rather not be in business and don't want you showing up. So I give it 2 stars - which is pretty dismal for a perfectly 'fine' business. I always leave scratching my head wondering if they wanted my business or not - which is a pretty odd feeling. But I still go again and again because the results are fine and it's convenient for me. Although if I found another place nearby, I would probably reconsider. read more

I stopped going here even though it's close to my house. I now drive to greenwood but it's worth it. Diane is not warm and fuzzy and her customer service skills are poor but I can get past that. I can't get past the exorbitant prices, poor work product and missed deadlines. The final straw was a dress that she completely destroyed and was given to me two weeks after the deadline. She never checked in with me about missing the deadline and I had to keep bothering her. I threw the dress away. Also she keeps extra fabric and material from her jobs (I'm used to having it returned) and once charged me for materials she used on my dress (ribbon) that she kept from some other customers project. Unlike the others my experience here was fine. Of course my needs may not have been as complex as some others as I was just getting a pair of jeans hemmed.... I'm visiting from the bay area and had a new pair of jeans I needed shortened. I came in looking for an original hemm and the lady at the counter assured me that for these pants the original hemm wasn't necessary because she could make the hemm look just as good as the original. Which she did. So aside from doing a good and prompt job( I brought them in Tuesday evening before thanksgiving and picked them up the next morning), she also saved me 10 dollars. Which is always appreciated... And I didn't find anything unsanitary or dirty about the place.... Also, 11 dollars seems about standard for hemming pants. And 20 for an original hemm may be 4 or 5 dollars more expensive than you'll find anywhere, if even that read more

I've never used Yelp before, but my experience today prompted me to. Initially when I called, the staff person was very pleasant and accommodating. When I arrived, however, my first red flag was that one staff member started the consultation and a second woman stopped her and said she wanted someone else to do it. I felt a bit embarrassed for that first employee who was removed from the consultation in a matter-of-fact way in front of a potential customer. The second employee was friendly, knowledgeable, and personable - until I thanked her for her time and let her know I'd be visiting a few other seamstresses to gather pricing information before deciding who to go with. Her entire demeanor changed; she told me "It would've been nice if you had mentioned that at the beginning" (however, I only ever said I was interested in a consultation and pricing with the first employee who helped me - I never gave any other indicators to anyone). She avoided eye contact with me while unlacing my dress (which she did so quickly that the thick lacing kept whipping up and hitting my back). She then had a few more audible sighs and as soon as I was unlaced she turned her back and said "Just keep in mind that I was the head seamstress at David's Bridal for 5 years. Remember that when you talk to your other people." and walked away. I felt ashamed, embarrassed, and bewildered. This is my wedding dress and I was only polite and gracious when I said I was shopping around. To be honest, the price wouldn't have mattered. If they had offered the cheapest option possible I still wouldn't put myself through another visit to this store. They turned an exciting step in the wedding planning process into a humiliating and confusing one. read more

I will NEVER go back to Diane's! This place is ridiculous. I would give it zero stars if I could. When I was not satisfied with alterations on my shorts because the side seams had not been altered (I had been quoted $20 for hemming and seam alterations). Diane herself came out and said that if I paid ANOTHER $20 per pair that they would fix them. I asked, "What was I paying for? Because whey I dropped them off she had told me that to hem shorts cost more than the usual $12 because they had to alter the side seams and the seams weren't done." She said they would only charge me another $18 per pair. Total cost would be $38 per pair of shorts. Really? Yesterday I brought a bridesmaid dress into Dianes for Alterations for a wedding I am in, in a acouple weeks. I was actually expecting to have to rush the alterations but no... They said they would have the dress alterations complete a week from yesterday with the option to get it back sooner if need be. This was a relief, I got fitted for the alterations and then came to the counter to get the slip a bit pricey you could say but all in all nice people and a good turn around time! read more

I gave them three chances and literally all have come up short. I had two blazers altered, one left the sleeves too long, the other was left alarmingly short. The last straw was paying $160 for altering two dress shirts that were too long in the sleeves. They came back looking like clown pants on my arms because they didn't alter the inseam of the sleeve. When I took them back to see if something could be done to remedy how bad they looked, I got "lectured" about how all shirts have pleats in them (as if that had anything to do with my complaint). When I asked for a refund I was then was told to go buy a similar shirt at banana republic to "prove" that something was wrong with the alteration. By any measure, this was one of the most ridiculous interactions I've ever had with a small business owner. I was born and raised in the area...I have not ever been treated so poorly by a business in this part of Seattle. I will never take my alterations to this place again and would recommend that others stay away from such an arrogant, flippant person who apparently does not value her customer base. read more
