Whenever I find myself doing a ride along the Niagara River, I am compelled to stop by Dick's to check out what's going on. The original owner is a quick witted character and maintains a massive sound system in house to entertain with classic rock videos. At least one time I found lunch cooking out front on a BBQ. This place isn't just a bike shop, it is a lifestyle and it fits in perfectly with the Niagara River recreation environment. Besides their excellent location and ample parking, they have a nice supply of reasonably priced accessories and all things bicycle. Go for bike stuff and enjoy the vibe. read more

I went into this shop with my wife and our two young kids. My son got on an exercise bike and the old codger behind the counter scolded my son to get off the bike. He referred to him as a little girl. I'm not sure if he was trying to be funny or just his senelity was kicking in. I've always bought high end bikes (no Kmart junk) for my family and I was prepared to buy several bikes that day. My wife and I rented bikes from Dick and Richard (his son) to bike tour into Ontario, then along the Erie Canal to Rochester. The Evo bikes are inexpensive, but appropriate for flat, casual touring 20 to 50 miles per day, including riding hard-pack gravel along the canal. We had a great time and great experience too with Dick's Bikes. So Dick and Richard have very positive reviews and very negative reviews. Here's why, I think. Dick has been there for over 50 years. At Dick's age, he still loves to help people and bikes, but doesn't need to have much tolerance for demanding or rude customers. In my conversations with him first on the phone (from California) then in person when we picked up the bikes, he was incredibly helpful. I was pleased and surprised by how much time he spent with me on the phone asking about our bike touring plans and making very helpful suggestions too. Here's one key to success when in the shop: Be patient. Dick could easily have made a perceived rude comment to me with all our modifications as we checked out the bikes to tour. And he would have been right. I was very particular setting up the bikes. To their credit, they just let me adjust-test-adjust ect. I would love to visit Dick's bikes again sometime soon just to talk to them, to appreciate how long they have been serving their community and tourist like us passing through. Here is a good start to a visit to Dick's Bike's, and perhaps any family business you visit: "Hi, I am so glad this shop is here, and hope you can help me. I need...." Based on my experience, this approach will avoid those negative encounters. If you don't want to be kind to them, as you expect to be treated, just go to a giant corporate store where the employees wont even notice you are there. read more

Rude, chauvinistic owner who actually said to me, "Why don't you just stick to making meatloaf?" I had a flat tire. I called ahead of time to see what info they'd need to help me figure out what tire tube I needed. I got there and got hassled for more info and not knowing exactly what I needed. I ended up going back a second time to ask for help making sure the tire size was right since it was the first time I've ever changed one. That's when the owner became even more condescending and just made it an awful experience. In the future I'll drive another 20 min to be treated with respect and professionalism. To the previous reviewer that said that being nice and not a rude customer will solve the treatment, that isn't true. I was nice the entire time I was in this store. Even after the meatloaf comment, I tried to laugh it off just to get out of the store. No one needs to be treated like they are stupid. Dick was helpful but at the cost of being condescending. I went into the shop today with my 13-month-old daughter. I have never experienced this level of misogyny and chauvinistic behavior in my entire life. I work in a male dominated industry, and this was by far the most disrespectful behavior I have ever experienced. Then when I got home, I realized they gave me a half link when I specifically showed them the exact piece I needed. Walked in to the store which owners and about 5 customers not wearing mask. I've been doing business here since 1988 and have bought every bike here and had every repair here since then. The man has now plunged over the deep end. The health department should investigate this place since they are in complete defiance of the Covid restrictions. For that reason the shop should be shut down. I feel sorry for their employees who do a great job. I wear a mask not because I need it or want it, but because I RESPECT all of the other Western New Yorkers that I come in contact with. When I enter a business and am greeted with repeated and vile 4-letter expletives and I'm told that I'm a ******* and a ***** and a ***** it makes me sick. If I could give no stars then that's what I would do. I am physically disabled and my husband bought me a tricycle so I can start having a little more freedom . We called them Thursday and asked if there was anyway they could look at it because of how short I am and my disability, I needed a few adjustments. The guy he spoke to said sure bring it in and they would help us. My son brought it up there today and some guy told him to get the bike out of here. So I called and asked to speak to a manager or the owner. He told me not to ever call them or come to his business again. What a jackals. Had a great experience with Dick's! First of all, Dick's was the only bike shop in the entire Buffalo area willing to rent bikes to my cycling party for a week. When our motley crew of seven showed up on a Sunday morning, he opened the shop early, brought in several employees/family members, and had a large selection of bikes for us to choose from (used bikes--he had scoured the area and bought several used bikes so he would have enough for us). Some of the bikes were older, but none of them were junkers. They took the time to fit each of us to a bike, equipped each as requested (some of us required racks for panniers, others didn't), tuned up each bike, outfitted us with patch kits, a pump, spare tubes, etc. He said if we had any mechanical difficulties that we couldn't fix while we were on the road (riding from Buffalo to Syracuse along the Erie Canal trail) he would come rescue us. He charged $150 per bike per week, which seems quite reasonable to me. Dick even e-mailed/texted me a couple of times to check how we were doing. We had no major mechanical problems other than one flat tire. This cycling group has been on many trips together, working with rental bikes, tour operators, etc. and this was one of the best experiences we've had. Great place to stop off the bike trail. Stopped in for the first time on a ride from Buffalo to Albany and needed a handlebar bag and some gel food. Had what I needed at a very reasonable price. Dick saw my bike and offered to do a quick service gratis to wish me well on the trip. Even gave me some chain oil. It worked. Made it all the way to Albany without a hitch. Dick and his soon were really nice folks and I'd be sure to drop in the next time I'm on the trail. read more

If there were no stars that's what this shop would receive. My boyfriend and I took my dad to look for a bike and he was also looking for my mom. The bike he wanted was only in one color in the store which my dad didn't like at all. He asked the girl who was helping us if it came in other colors so she pulled out the catalog to see what colors were offered. Meanwhile Dick wanders over and starts harassing my dad about the color and why does it matter what color it comes in. The girl who was helping us explained they could order a different color and he liked the bike so why does it matter if he orders it. Come to find out if my dad wanted a different color it was just a $60 charge to have it shipped. We found the color my dad wanted in the catalog and Dick called him back so the guy could show him the colors online. The guy found the color my dad wanted and then Dick started up again saying why does it matter what color it is...it's just a bike, not a car. My dad told him if I'm paying for something I would like it to be something I want. He also told him there are plenty of other places to buy bikes. My dad was ready to buy the bike if he was willing to work with us. Another man had brought in his bike and wanted a back rack on his bike and while my boyfriend and I headed downstairs, Dick had said the bike was crappy so why buy a new rack that costs more instead of getting a new bike. I finally learned my lesson after the 3rd time when I walked in with my 8-yr old daughter and her friend, and he is spouting vulgar language towards me. I stopped here with my son while on a bike tour, looking for a cleat bolt. First, we asked their "mechanic" about it, since he was on the sales floor and the guy who was apparently the sales guy ( and I presume the owner, based on other reviews. ) was talking to someone else. After repeatedly trying to ask if they had any, it was clear that he had no idea what we were talking about--he pointed us to a display case full of pedals, etc, which were most assuredly not what what we needed. ( A mechanic who doesn't know how bike cleats work? Seriously? ) OK, so we waited while the older guy finished up with the couple he was talking to already--no big deal. Eventually he gets around to asking us what we wanted. When I explained that I needed a cleat bolt, the conversation got... bizarre. He started asking snarky questions like "ARE YOU FEELING LUCKY TODAY?!?!" OK, whatever, I guess he thinks he's a comedian. Finally he says he'll get us one. Then he goes back to a counter and does paperwork... OK.... Then another guy comes in with two wheels to be trued. They obviously know each other. So the owner spends the next 15 minutes shooting the breeze, completely ignoring us. It was clear that he didn't actually intend to sell us anything, so we left. What a joke! My husband took my daughter's bike in to get repaired at dick's bicycle shop on 781 Niagara St, Tonawanda, NY 14150. Stupid us for leaving my daughter's bike basket on her bike while getting it repaired. When my husband picked up the bike, he forgot to get the basket back. So we went in there a couple days after, supposably they didn't have it nor see it. So today is the day that I go back to check it out and sure enough, her basket is sitting on display with the other store's baskets for sale. There is a small dent on the left side as well as the leftover white zip tie that held the Walmart price/product tag on it. When I showed the store owner the difference between our basket & his, he told me that it was their basket and I wasn't getting it. Then they come up with this story about giving the basket back in a bag to my husband a couple days ago. Boy are they full of sh*t! Nothing like stealing from a 11 year old. I dealt with this company years ago in the past with my oldest daughter's bike and it was a joke then. I told myself I would never step foot in this place again and here I am trying to give them are business and they still keep screwing us over. I promise you now, I will never ever return to this company. I don't think they like the fact that I called them out on it. They wrote in a price tag and put it back on the shelf to resale. I bought an electric bike through Bert's bike shop on Niagara Falls Boulevard and after a couple weeks of having my ebike I had to do a brake and disc alignment. I live in North Tonawanda and Dick's bicycle shop was the closest bicycle repair shop for me to go to. I called Dick's bicycle shop and told him I needed an alignment and he told me it was going to run me right around $50 or more to do an alignment. I wound up driving my bike over to Dick's bicycle shop and walked my electric bike that I bought off Bert's bike shop into Dick's bicycle shops showroom. I went to the back of his dirty store and the old man the owner turn to me and said what the f*** is that? Meaning my bike. He was aggravated because I did not purchase a ebike out of his store which is my preference but he does do bike repairs and told me to get my e-bike out of his f****** store and because I was not a customer of his he was not going to work on my bike. He was very rude. used profanity in front of his customers and even children that were in the store .He has no right tell me where I should buy a bike. I would never buy his crap he has in his bike store. All I needed was a brake alignment I have turned him into the Better Business Bureau and also called the health department about him not wearing a mask and not having a mask anywhere present while customers were in his store. He should not even be allowed to operate out of his store as he violates everything possible as a business owner. I will never do business with him ever again. I am going to do my best to spread the word and not have anyone go to his shop for any type of work as he does not know how to treat anybody with respect and all he does is talk bad about any other bike purchased outside his dirty store. Ive always tried to support locally owned business. After buying numerous bikes over the last 30 years from Dicks, I recently stopped in to buy a new Raleigh Hybrid. Took the bike for a ride to try it, but as I was looking it over, I noticed a scratch in the paint. I questioned Dick about it and his reply was "What are you worried about a Fu#@ing scratch for? Another worker offered to see if they had any touch up paint. Dicks reply to him was "F#@k this guy if he's so worried about a scratch. At this point I said to forget the bike, Ill just go to Berts. We went to this bicycle shop because it had advertised online that it rented bikes for the day. My family and I were planning on biking around the Niagara Falls region and we were short one bike. We visited this bike shop and talked with the worker. After explaining our purpose for being there and interacting for a few minutes, he ignored us to start working with another customer. We stood in shock for at least 15 minutes. After that time, he rudely snapped at us and informed us he was too busy to deal with renting a bike to us. We couldn't believe how poorly we were treated. Back in May, This is the email I sent to Dick's... we brought in our 3 bikes for a tune up. 2 road bikes and a recumbent. This is the second year we supported your business. I asked for a tune up and the reply was "so, oil and lube?" No, I want what a tune up entails. I want everything checked... oil, lube, tighten, safety check etc... My husband also mentioned a noise coming from my bike. The day after we picked up our road bikes, my husband noticed several spokes were loose on his bike and brought it back in to fix. Which you did, but commented "we don't normally tighten spokes in a tune up" WHAT??? Safety hazard #1. The noise is still there on my bike and I also had loose spokes. Safety hazard #2. The day I brought in my recumbent, it was less than 30 min later I got a call that it was ready. I was told you wanted to get it out of the shop because of its size. I questioned the thoroughness, how can you do a tune up in less than 30 min? Since I picked it up, the chain falls off every time I change gears (which NEVER happen before) and today I noticed a loose spoke. Safety hazard #3. I believe we paid $230.47 for you to slop some grease on the chains. I am very dissatisfied with your service and want a full refund. We do not want to bring our bikes back in to your shop. So you're aware, I did a charge back on my credit card. I have since lost the case with the credit card company and Dick's won because I had no proof that Dick's failed to provide the work I paid for. But really, Dick's actually lost because he will NEVER get our business again and I do a lot of networking and have been spreading the word. I ride my bikes about 200 miles a week and know a lot of bicyclists, who, like me, depends on our bikes to be safe and reliable. read more

Had a flat tire near Dick's so I went there to get it replaced. They did an o.k. job for a reasonable price in a reasonable amount of time. Dick seemed pleasant enough to deal with and I wanted to like this business. Dick and the mechanic pointed out some repairs that needed and I hesitated because I was thinking of replacing the bike.Dick talked about my bike like it was a work of art by a true master, like not getting it fixed would be a crime against Western Civilization, so the next day I took my bike back to get it fixed/tuned up.Dick wasn't there but someone who identified himself as Dick's nephew suggested that maybe this bike wasn't worth fixing. I had trouble talking to any of the employees at Dick's as they all kept interrupting and talking over me. Dick's nephew told me he could fix things up in an hour, so I went to the park near there and hung out, No call after an hour. No call after an hour and a half, so I got some lunch.Another hour later I went back, looked inside and my bike was still up on the stand, all apart. I went outside to wait. The female employee told me to come inside and talk to the "mechanic". They didn't have a part they needed to fix my bike but could order it ( this after Dick had assured me they had every part they might need on hand). After a convoluted conversation I was able to convince them that I actually wanted them to fix whatever they could. After about four hours they were done with their one hour job! read more
