Diesel is my favorite cafe in Boston. The coffee is fantastic. Baristas are knowledgeable, friendly, and can pull a mean shot of espresso. Recommended by my roommate for a great place to grab a hot coffee, get work done or impromptu meetings- I found myself venturing out on the red line, passing the Starbucks and ERC coffee shops of the world to arrive at a much more exclusive, local coffee haven. Seemingly small and cozy on the outside, Diesel Cafe might be one of the largest coffee shops I have ever been in the Boston area. Don't ever worry about not finding a seat- with pool tables, booths, bar stools, etc. it seems that no matter what you are looking for to enjoy your coffee, you will find at Diesel. I was slightly bummed when I ordered the coffee- for here- and received a paper cup (which then is impossible to correct because you would waste the cup anyway), but I will definitely think of this place to meet friends or as a destination for getting the work that I've avoided all week completed. read more

For quite some time, I've heard rave reviews about Somerville's Diesel Cafe. My hipster comrades have heavily urged me to frequent what they hail as the "best coffee shop in Boston." I can't quite say it lived up to the hype, but it did meet minimal expectations for me. This bustling cafe's modest awning exudes a much smaller feel than it's interior proves upon first glance. After eating an enormous meal at Red Bones practically across the street, I was seeking a missile of caffeine to stop my food coma from kicking in. The very front of this large cafe looks and feels exactly like any other coffee shop with its large windows, black thick-framed mac users and coffee aroma assaulting the senses. The mid-section of this awkwardly shaped cafe brags a set of billiards and several booths that remind me of a classic road-side diner. The back section resumes its cafe decor with small circular and larger square booths. Another unique aspect of DC, is its long family style table with vaulted flooring booth like seating, and bar-style table facing the wall. Adding to my curiosity was the loft above with two desks with several individuals seated working at their computers. Whether this was public or employee space I may never know. The pricing was about what you'd expect to pay, and the baristas greeted me before I had even a chance to glance at their lengthy menu of assorted drinks. You pay for wireless, which I have learned seems to be a staple of any well managed coffee shop despite the inexpensiveness it poses in reality. It was a Saturday, in fact, the Saturday before most students arrived for school so I'm assuming the vacancies at tables will not be duplicated again until winter break. No problems here, but I didn't get the right sense for this place. Not exactly the type of place I could get work done. But then again I tend to be a bit picky when it comes to coffee shop ambiance. I like this place. Esp since they have expanded. We used to come here in college and set up camp at a small table or a booth. If we got bored, there was pool, or ice cream or people watching. The coffee is good, the ice cream is good - the sandwiches good but pricey. I usually go for a something sweet. It can get a little drafty in the winter, but if you move away from that front area you should be fine. Some people have had issues with the staff, but they have always been nice and professional with me. Not over the top outgoing, but certainly not mean. A good alternative to the Starbucks across the street. If you get a seat in the back, it is MUCH more comfortable. read more

Cash Only! Diesel reminds me of all the little coffee houses when I was in college - maybe because it looks run down and is packed with college kids. At the same time the coffee houses I used to go to also had better coffee. I've tried their chai and their mocha chai. Both tasted really watery and made me extremely jittery. A companion that I was with told me that it was probably the sugar since she didn't feel any caffeine. I have no idea what it was but I'm going to stick to juice or tea next time. Diesel is also very large so if you're going to study alone you shouldn't have a problem finding a seat but there are pool tables and sometimes people talking loudly so you might want to bring your IPOD just to drown out the extra noise. As for their restrooms, not the cleanest in Boston but not the dirtiest so if you've got to go stop in for a drink or pastry and use the BR. No key required. read more

I have only been here once, and it was not for very long... but it made an impression. Diesel Cafe has a funky/fresh atmosphere -- a minimal, warehousey space with comfy furniture, lots of local art and a black and white photo booth (awesome). Unlike the coffee shops in Central or Harvard, which can be dominated by Human-Laptop Hybrids, Diesel has a pretty even spread of laptop-pounders, chatters, readers and chillers. Most importantly, the green tea latte (made with soymilk) was one of the most delicious beverages I have ever had the privilege of consuming, and I have spent the past two weeks attempting to re-create it in my own house. Unsuccessfully. Clearly the only solution to this problem is to stop by Diesel more often :-) Addition: Chocolate peanut butter brownie = also superb. read more

This is about as good as it gets for Boston-area coffee shops. First of all, the complaints. Some friends of mine (for reasons unknown), specifically don't like the place and won't go there. I've had this happen with more than one person, so its worth noting that some people just don't jive with the place. Maybe they just aren't hip enough. Other downsides, no plastic accepted. Luckily all major area banks have branches within 1 block, so no biggie. Just about always overcrowded. Wifi isn't free (reasonably so, otherwise I can only imagine the crowding in here). Upsides- Some of the best coffee in the area. They use mainly Intelligentsia beans, and go through them frequently so its always fresh. The girls there (95% of staff is female) really know how to make drinks right. Not by any stretch the 'best' drinks I've ever had, but I have never had a complaint either. The environment is awesome. It's a fun mixture of post-industrial, biker and art student vibe to just happen to work. Varied types of seats ranging from stools to booths to couches and chairs. There's a large table in the back that can fit probably 12 people if you could find it empty one day. Pool tables at a super reasonable hourly rate, along with a real photobooth add to the mixture. This place is very GLBT friendly, so much to the degree that if you aren't GLBT friendly then this probably isn't the place for you. I personally love it, but perhaps your cousin from Alabama who uses "gay" as a derogatory term shouldn't be brought here. I used to go there every day, but now I live in Back Bay so its a bit of a trek to get there. Nevertheless, its still one of the best places around here for meeting some friends and having some coffee. read more

There's Starbucks. Then there's the Anti-Starbucks. Its name is Diesel Cafe. If this were an after-school tv show in the '90s, this would be the place the nerdy kids would hang out after school (while the cool kids went to The Max -- cue Saved by the Bell reference. If you don't get that, you're too young to be reading this. Or I'm just getting old.). And I don't mean that in a bad way. This is where the future Bill Gates would hang and code his way to genius over a latte. It's dimly-lit, packed with bikes, pool tables, and the ubiquitous hipster. Seriously, hipsters are the new Forever 21 / Starbucks / mailbox. One on every corner. The coffee I dig (esp. the chai tea latte); the food, I do not. I've had both the smoked salmon + sun-dried tomato sandwich and a salad here, and I've been borderline disgusted with both. I don't think I'd ever order food here again. If you're looking for a new coffee spot, this might be it. I love this place! Here's some reasons why: The coffee is fantastic- I've never had a bad cup yet. The bagels are perfectly crunchy yet chewy at the same time. Sandwiches are also quite tasty, my favorite: the one with boursin cheese, sprouts, carrots and green apples. I also love the pecan sticky buns, salads, and raspberry shortbread bar thingys. I like the Naked juice and tea selection as well (sometimes I just want an alt. beverage). Basically I have never had anything bad here. The staff has always been friendly to me as well. This morning was no different - the woman who rang in my crazy order of 14 bagels sliced with cream cheese and a bunch of muffins (to bring for everyone at work) was super nice. I felt bad I was holding up the line, but I didn't want to take the lazy way out and just stop @ dunkin's for the same old thing. I like to keep it local :) and I was glad I did. Folks at work said these were the best bagels they've had in a while. WTG Diesel! Two things I don't like about this place: They charge for internet. People hog the booths and front tables for not just hours... more like DAYS. I have never ONCE gotten a booth in the 4 years I've been going there. Not once. I was surprised that this place was absolutely PACKED at 11 AM on a Saturday. I stood in line for 15 minutes and waited another 10 for my latte. Sure, I am a fan! I avoided this place like the plague because I thought it was a place models and the like sat and sipped their lattes while looking in a mirror. Nope, only I did that. I got a latte and yes it took too long to make. It tasted a little weird....but I didn't realize it until I was half way done, so I trudged on. Why did I give it three stars. Because there are plenty of places to sit so one can study or meet up with friends, great people watching, and the sandwiches looked out of this world. I like this place, but it's always crowded! I swear - I think people who come here camp out for the entire day, because seats rarely open up. Their coffee is top-notch though - kinda pricey, but totally worth it! I always get the sugar-free vanilla skim latte in a LARGE, which to me seems more like a small in comparison to other places (even S-bux!). Also, their sandwiches are decent and different, rather than the typical options you'll find elsewhere. One thing I do like is their hours - they're open super late (midnight every night I think?), so if I ever needed a last-minute study place, I can always count on them to be open.... but then again, I probably won't find a seat. :-( I can't win!!! read more

As a first time customer what first struck me was the size of the place, and the interesting array of places to sit, things to do, and food to eat. Then I took a sip of my chai latte and the walls came crumbling down. This place mostly just has the appearance of a cool, hip, quality and community-centric business that the actual food, coffee and customer service doesn't live up to. Diesel somehow grew on me while I was working on graduate school applications and spending no less than 25 hours there each week. Before I get into the interesting stuff, let me start with the basics. If you hate Starbucks acid brew, you will love Diesel's coffee, it is really really great and they have sugar syrup which I for one love! There is also something to be said about a mountain of goodies just staring at your behind a glass barrier saying eat me - Atkins and South Beachers...walk out now. The lemon squares...like mu mum used to make them The chewy chocolate chip cookies - ask for them warmed....fabulous The oatmeal walnut chocolate - also warmed - for those days when I want to be healthy but steal feel like a sinner Finally that sandwich with the basil pesto, fresh tomatoes and fresh mozzarella...delish, even if you are a carnivore like me. Now onto beaver guy... or racoon guy. If you don't know what I mean look for the guy with the stuffed coon and yellow toolbox. Ok so not to be mean but the place has some of the most interesting people in Boston and one day I will come back with a camera and shoot a documentary. This place is a staple in the indie hipster crowd and I can respect that. It's over-crowded too-cool-for-school vibe is appealing to macbook pros and ipod shufflers but little else. The decor is comforting if you're looking for a pit stop - but not a relaxing Saturday afternoon book-reading nook. The food is good and the jasmine green tea tastes like jasmine alright, but.......you may never get inside the door! The bathrooms are gross - always. But I love the place. It amazes me that there are actually patrons across the street at Starbucks when you can get a better cup of coffee or latte for cheaper at Diesel. Sort of punk rock/ art gallery motif they have going on there but it's original and it works for them. Haven't had any of the sandwiches there but I've had several of their lattes and teas there and it's as good if not better than starbucks and it's a little cheaper given the size of the cup. I've heard that Diesel was a bit inconsistent with the quality of their drinks but my latte was quite good. They did an outstanding job with the microfoam; probably top 3 in the Boston area. Used to be a great place for some hot queer eyecandy to go with my Accelerator Latte with Soy and vegan yummy thing. Now the staff keeps getting younger and younger and I am feeling more and more lecherous as I greet my uber-baby daycare bound baristas and ask them to read the sandwich board for me since my reading glasses are in my bag. Biggest annoyance that has nothing to do with the place and all with the people is when parties of 1 HOG FOR HOURS the booths with their laptops and PDAs and iPods. Be courteous and either SHARE your booth or stay home. Drink some Sanka. Have a Celeste Frozen Pizza. We all know you're not really working anyways. This veggie-friendly coffeeshop has a full lunch menu as well as a full coffee and espresso menu. They have a ton of good vegetarian wraps and a good selection of meaty breakfast sandwiches. The nice surprise is that they have a super deep space, and there is a lot of seating. Diesel cafe in Somerville (Davis Square). I go there most every Sunday, for several (think, often 12 or more) hours to do my homework. The parking is free on sunday, but if you are taking public transport it works out every day. They close at midnight. It's awesome. It's my favorite venue for homework, ever. Con: You pay for wireless. I pay by month, but as I'm there for lots and lots of hours a month, it is worth it. Or, better yet, you don't use the internet resist facebook, firstclass and the procrastination methods of doom, and actually get some work done. Also, getting a place to sit is difficult. The best part is that they don't ever kick you out, so people sort of just camp there. This actually contributes to the fun of the place: getting a seat is a sort of ritualistic stalking, staring, and making deals activity. "Hey dudes, I see that you are finishing up your coffee... perchance are you on your way out?" and then you get one of multiple answers, which usually is a polite (Oh god, no I'm here for 15 hours to work on my PSET) or, (Why yes! You can put your stuff down) This becomes stressful if you are one of those *oh my god I have to get all of my work done immediately people* but is a pleasant game for the every-woman. When only one person is sitting in a booth, the great social phenomenon is that you can just say: howdy partner, I'd like to sit here with you, and they say: hey cool! and go back to their reading, or better yet, make friends with you and help you procrastinate. Last week I was sitting in a booth half, and Dan Blakeslee who is this supremely cool NH musician who I'm just a little bit obsessed with came and ended up sitting with me at my booth. I was completely and utterly starstruck. I should mention that I absolutely love the food and beverages and this is a great part of why I go. You can get a pot of tea, a raspberry italian soda or the Fifth Salad or a mean sandwich, or my current favorite, The Iced Mocha Chai, which isn't something that I would generally condone as a flavor pairing, but somehow works out well. Which is a problem for my friend Lizzy who consumes copious amounts of the plain java, but she can suck it up, and get another beverage as there are about 50 interesting options on the board. Diesel easily wins for the best study space of any coffee shop in the Cambridge/Somerville area with an enormous amount of booths, tables, benches, and couches to accomodate many more coffeeshop goers than any reasonable competition. Throw in outstanding coffee, great decor, and a solid menu and you've got yoruself the best place to spend an afternoon working in the area. The salads are fabulous, especially the Fifth Salad, and the sandwhiches are all above-par if not a little pricey. Espresso-based drinks tend to be around the same level of quality as True Grounds, 1369, Simon's, Petsi's, and whomever else you might compare them to in the area. Action on the pool tables can get a little distracting if you're sitting immediately across from them but otherwise isn't a problem. Man, how could anyone not love this place. read more

Diesel Cafe is a strange bird. I love hipster-watching so, needless to say, I was REALLY excited the first time I made it over to Diesel. Only problem? It isn't hip. Maybe there are a few nascent hipsters tucked away in the corners-- guys who haven't quite found the perfect pair of ironic glasses, girls who haven't yet managed to rip holes in their stockings--but overall the crowd seems nondescript. And, unfortunately, the same goes for the cafe itself. There's not much wrong with Diesel Cafe--there are tons of tables, a bathroom, good light at the front of the shop, a big menu, a punch card for an eventual free drink--but, I don't know, there's just something missing. Diesel is a pretty good coffee shop if you catch it when there's an actual place to sit down... service is decent. selection is quite wide with many vegan options most of the time. coffee is very good. coffee drinks (latte/espresso/etc) can be hit or miss depending on who is making them, but i think that's far superior to the bigger chain across the street. the crowds can be annoying or worse, depending on the time of day you go, but if you find your own spot to bury into a book or paper, you'll be fine. the place can feel overrun at times and it can get loud during peak times, but it's got good food, great coffee and an eclectic feel - usually worth the negatives. oh - get the godamn photobooth fixed, yo! read more

I like to hang out near Davis Square during weekends, mostly sit in a coffee place and read some papers and surf on the net while having some delicious drink&food. I usually go to the Starbucks across the street since they offer free wifi. Although, the Starbucks is a great place to study, they don't have conformable chairs and there is a long desk but you have to share it with others. Not to mention limited food they serve. It becomes a pain sitting on wooden chairs after a couple of hours. So, I decided to give a try Diesel Cafe yesterday. Here are my observations: * Pros - Friendly staffs, fast service. - Comfortable chairs/desk, nicely decorated place * Cons - Sandwiches are small and cost around $10. I mean, you can buy a much bigger sandwich from Subway which is located a few meters away on the street for less than $10. - The place is little noisy. - There is no free wifi, I think, it is a huge mistake. (however, there is trick to get free-wifi) Trick to get free-wifi: Since the Starbucks is very close to the place, you can try to connect their wifi via your laptop. But, it is highly likely you have very low or no signal unless you have a high-quality wifi card on your laptop. So, what I did was to use my cellphone (galaxy s3) as a wireless modem. I realized, I could connect Starbucks' wifi via my cell phone. First, I connected Starbucks wifi; then downloaded a simple tethering app and activated on my cell phone. Finally, I just plugged my cell phone to my laptop and got net connection through my cell phone freely. (: So, as long as you can get free wifi, this is a decent place to spend a few hours. read more

I love this place. The food and bevs are beyond excellent, and the staff isn't too bad to look at either. ;) People are very nice, and the cafe itself is very GLB friendly. Since my groundbreaking two star review in 2014, I've developed a deep respect for the game of pool. I never had an interest in coming by again, but a friend of mine wanted to play a few games and I met him here. Diesel Cafe has two pool tables. They're also open until 11pm, and by doing this they provide a good spot for both the laptop losers and the people who just don't want to be at a bar, but still yearn to be in public. I forgot to focus on the things I didn't like about diesel this time around-- maybe in a few years I'll come by and give it another star for their beignets or something. On a warm day a seat in the window is unbeatable. Unfortunately, they are rarely available. On my last visit, I was lucky to get one. Besides the obvious, fresh air and a view, I could pick up the Starbucks WiFi signal. My biggest knock on Diesel Cafe is their charge for WiFi. That's what everyone looks like at Diesel. It's a toss up for which is the biggest hipster contingency: the cafe goers or the staff themselves. But ok, besides the overwhelmingly homogenous crowd here, it's an awesome space that is so totally Davis. It's a funky vibe with a laid back attitude. The menu features sandwiches, salads, soups ranging between omnivore to vegan. The food could be better for the price (everything is $8-10). My favorite item is the tofu scramble - it's made to perfection. The cafe snacks (brownies, lemon bars, cookies, etc) are all really yummy. But if you're vegan, good luck, the vegan treats are usually gone by 3 pm (read: I eat all of them, sorry not sorry). You pay for wifi, which would piss me off under normal circumstances, but for $13/month, I'm okay with it, considering I spend about 100-120 hours here per month. The cell service is spotty the further you retreat into the ginormous space that is Diesel; but that's ok, I'm there to study and get ma shit done. Lots of people come here to do work, others to chat about their cats or their community garden. But either way, Diesel is always filled with nice Somervillian folk. (: read more
