Ding King does 5 star repairs using a 3 star process. Every time I pick up one of my boards from repair, it's filthy and covered with dried resin drips, dots, residue and dirt dust crap muck. My latest board had a big circle of dried resin on the bottom where it appears the technician simply used my board as the work station and left the drippy can of resin (or whatever) on my very nice and expensive like-new board. No clean up, no wipe down, no nothing. Every single time I retrieve a board from Ding King I have to take a razor blade to remove the excess resin splattered all over. Not cool. We pay good money for a repair. The least they could do is wipe off the board and make sure there's not a big dried circle of resin snot left behind. Do better, Ding King. read more

Ding King is truly the Rock Of Gibraltar of surfboard repair! I mean, it's one of those situations where I dread having to visit them (because that would mean that, gulp, I've somehow managed to damage my surfboard) but I'm always thankful that they are around and available should I need them. What's more, it's always a good idea to maintain your board and have all those cracks, chips, and dings sealed on a regular basis in order to prolong the life of your surfboard. They've been around for many years now and their work is excellent and affordable. On this last visit I needed to have a large hole in my performance longboard repaired so that i could get ready to sell it to make room for a new board. If the color wasn't just a little off, it'd be indistinguishable from before. Overall very happy. Ding King did a total hack job on my SUP. I went in for a leash-plug repair and figured I'd get a few small dings fixed too. The leash plug came out okay, but they made no effort to match the color, and made the board look like a beater. There are so many color-matching technologies out there, these guys clearly don't want to invest in one. I can match a chip of paint at ACE Hardware, but these guys can't get within a a few shades? Not only the color, but they burned down to the white on one of the rails while sanding, and didn't bother to fix it. On top of that, the board was covered in overspray and epoxy stains/fingerprints, and they delivered it with dust all over it and new tears in the traction pad. The workmanship has gone way downhill since I first started getting my boards fixed here. read more

I brought my board over to the Ding King on a Saturday with a decent size issue on the nose of my board. I didn't hit my board on anything, but there was a small rip along the front that kept getting bigger and bigger as time went on. The guys at Ding King looked at the entire board, told me the price and that it would take about a week. They let me know they were going to remove all the wax and look for other issues while it was clean. They told me the first ding would be $40 and each additional ding would be $10. My board needed three small places fixed up. I called them later that week and they reported my board was fixed up and ready to go. When I stopped by, they showed me the two dings they repaired, but another small spot where they sanded it down and put a bit of Solarez on it to stop it from getting worse. They charged me $55 for all the work. I would take my board back to these guys in a hot minute. They were easy to work with, up front with pricing, and did some quality work. It's cash only though, so stop by the ATM on the way to pick up your stick. read more

I have used this place in the past and was satisfied. It's also the go-to ding repair shop in the Encinitas area. However this time is was very unhappy with the service. It took 18 days for them to repair a simple tail ding. I had to come in and call multiple times. And every time the reason for the delay changed from sheer board repair volume, waiting for the correct polish color (which they did not match), and finally it having to dry even though the board had not been surfed in over month while I was recovering from eye surgery and I had stored the board in my spare bedroom. I do not trust the repair job and I'm having another board repair expert take a look at it before I get back in the water. read more

I've been here 4 times, for the same board (Pistachio colored 8'6 Bing), with small and big cracks, and am always surprised by the results. They do an amazing job at color-matching, sometimes you can barely tell anything happened. They're also super friendly, helpful, and easy to call for any updates. I hate going here because it means I put a ding in my board but I love this place. From small ding's, to cracks nearly all the way thru they do an amazing job. The staff is always friendly and the prices are fair. I have used them with a brand new board (make sure you tell them you want the color matched), and they matched the paint exactly. I have also used them for a small dings on a very old board and their quality is always excellent. Thankfully my SUP skills have improved so not using them quite as much as I used to (I asked if they had a monthly subscription service) but what a great resource when your SUP needs help. read more

Absolutely stoked on these guys. Brought in two boards; a brand new epoxy thruster and my favorite poly thruster. The epoxy was brand new and suffered a hole punch in the nose after getting tangled up with another board. The poly had a cracked rail from a similar incident. Not only did they fix both up ahead of schedule, they did so with the utmost attention to detail and quality. They did a decent job of matching the black rails on my epoxy and managed to completely vanish any signs of impact on my poly. Great guys doing great work! Will grade on two things. I had a light buckle on the nose of my brand new board, which they did a pretty good job of fixing (not completely flush but a lot better then I could ever do). It all went downhill when I noticed some huge pressure dings all over my tail that were not there when I dropped it off a week prior. Was offered 10 bucks off for them blowing it... make sure you scan your board with them so they see that there is nothing else wrong with your board - have them mark off where there are problems. read more

A little while ago, I brought in a nearly brand new Donald Takayama Model T for a fairly minimal repair. I've had terrible luck with Roper in the past, so I figured I'd try out the North County competition. Board had a golf ball-sized shatter on the bottom (completely flat area of the board) from the nose of a shortboard hitting it. Not the end of the world, but since the board was almost new and had a cream colored tint, I didn't want to do it myself. When I walked in, I placed the board on the rack and we went over what needed to be repaired. I wanted a color match with no hurry on the repair - just a good, clean job. I think it was $65 to fix, a little pricey for one small ding, but with color and a professional repair, deemed it acceptable. Was told it would take a couple days to repair and I'd receive a call letting me know when it was complete. Within 24 hours, I got a call saying my board was finished. It was at this point I was hit with two separate thoughts: 1) wow, that was really fast, I'm stoked to have my board back that quickly, and 2) wow, that was really fast... some would say a little too fast... After already suffering from early signs of separation anxiety, I opted to drive up right away and pick up my board. Butterflies hit me as soon as I could smell the resin, hoping my board came out as expected. I handed the guy my slip and moments later he returned with my board. He set it up on the rack and all I could think was, "crap". The golf ball-sized repair was now closer to the size of a softball and I'm not sure how color match seemed to mean clear with visible q-cel filler - it didn't require filler, as it was only a shatter. Aside from looking horrible, it wasn't even smooth. I figured at the very least, it should have been sanded flat and buffed out, yet there were very notable pits and bumps. As previously mentioned, this was on a completely flat portion of the board that should have been a cake walk to repair. In hindsight, I should have left the board and told them to fix it again. I didn't, so that's on me. I was so annoyed, I just handed over the cash, grabbed my board and left. It was with this single negative experience I'd be hesitant to bring any board to them again, let alone an expensive one. Perhaps they have your rail shatter on your clear 6'0" thruster handled, but I would not take any nice resin jobs there. They got a second star because of the quick turn around time. read more
